"They've been trying to get us to do a tour since '98," Brandy toldGayle Kingand company of her first-ever co-headlining tour with Monica, named after their hit duet and set to kick off in the fall. "It just finally felt like the right time." It also felt like the right time because the duo "created the communication and the relationship to do it," Monica added. "It's a musical marriage. When you start to go on a tour, especially of this caliber, we have to talk about everything." She then referenced theirrecord-breaking Verzuz battle in 2020, calling it the first time she and Brandy had seen each other in years amid the beef, when the topic turned to the feud. King asked. "It started as nothing and it really did turn into something," Monica clarified, alluding to external forces that led to the conflict. "The reason I was so insistent that we communicate directly is that you take all of the peanut gallery out of the conversation." Monica added, "If there's something to discuss, we discuss it among each other… and that just eliminates any confusion. There was a lot of confusion and conflict and there was a lot of people around" during those early days. Brandy quipped, "The song didn't help either. We were fighting over a boy." Monica also made note of how asinine it was for the industry to pit two teenagers against each other. "I was 18, she was 17 when we did the record," she said. "People forget that you're having this conversation about children, basically. You're inciting a riot amongst children! We were teenagers… We didn't really know each other." The feud between the young stars began following the release of "The Boy Is Mine," which also fed into the narrative of a rivalry considering the subject matter of fighting over a boy. The rumors reached a fever pitch after record producerDallas Austin claimed that he saw Monica punch Brandyin the face backstage at an awards show prior to a performance of their hit song. Brandy's brother, fellow artistRay J, has also said that the feud was "100% real,"citing a competitiveness from being pitted against each other. Regardless, they would collaborate again on the 2012 song "It All Belongs to Me," and their infamous Verzuz battle proved to be cordial, with the two addressing past tensions but largely praising each other, though there was some perceived awkwardness. The duo, who most recently reunited again forAriana Grande's 2024 remix of "The Boy Is Mine," confirmed on CBS that the drama is far behind them. "Now we can't stop talking," Brandy said of their friendship and forthcoming tour, which they hailed as a "celebration of music" as well as "celebration of womanhood."
