"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants "cast: See what the coming-of-age classic's stars are up to 20 years later

Diyah Pera/Warner Bros. Friendship perhaps never fit as well as it did inThe Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, the coming-of-age favorite that turned 20 this month. Adapted from Ann Brashares' 2001 novel, the 2005 sleepover staple starsAlexis Bledel,America Ferrera,Blake Lively, andAmber Tamblynas lifelong friends gearing up to spend their first summer apart. But they remain connected through the titular traveling pants, which, due to some unaccountable sartorial magic, fit each of them perfectly. As the girls endure transformative experiences alone, they keep their bond alive by each taking turns with the pants. Speaking withEntertainment Weeklylast month ahead of the film's anniversary, directorKen Kwapismade pains to point out how the four leads have stayed close in the decades since production wrapped. "I think fans would be surprised to know that those four actors were strangers to each other when they first met, because almost instantly they created this sense of a lifelong friendship, such a lived-in relationship," Kwapis said. He's not kidding. Do any other castsreunite as much as the cast of theSisterhood of the Traveling Pants? Granted, what we call a "reunion" is probably what they just call "hanging out." As we wait for their next reunion —or that potential third movie— let's check in on what theSisterhood of the Traveling Pantscast has been up to in the two decades since the film's release. Diyah Pera/Warner Bros.; JC Olivera/Variety via Getty Alexis Bledel starred inThe Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsas Lena, a born romantic and aspiring artist. She reprised the role in the 2008 sequel,The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Speaking with EW at acast reunion in 2013, the actress admitted she was put off by the film's title at first. "Then you read it, and the characters were so well crafted and they seemed like such real people that I think we all ended up giving it a second look because of that," she said. In 2005, Bledel's career was already off to the races due to her turn as Rory Gilmore onGilmore Girls(2000–2007). She followed her performance inSisterhood of the Traveling Pantswith roles in films such asPost Grad(2009),The Conspirator(2010), andJenny's Wedding(2015). She would go on to win an Emmy in 2017 for her work as Emily Malek on Hulu'sThe Handmaid's Tale(2017–2021). While shooting her moving arc on the fifth season ofMad Men(2012), Bledel struck up a relationship withVincent Kartheiser, who played Pete Campbell on the series. The couple married in June 2014, and Bledel gave birth to a son the following year. In 2022, Bledel and Kartheiserdivorcedafter eight years of marriage. Diyah Pera/Warner Bros.; Arturo Holmes/Getty America Ferrera played Carmen, a child of divorce who is the most dogged about sustaining the sisterhood's bond. She reprised the role forThe Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. FollowingThe Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Ferrera landed the lead role in ABC'sUgly Betty(2006–2010), playing Betty Suarez across four seasons and winning both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance. "We've been a part of each other's lives in really meaningful ways that go beyond making a movie together," Ferrera told EW in 2013. "We almost forget that we made a movie together because our friendship was created from so many other experiences. The fact that our friendship started in this beautiful film that was so meaningful to all of us and to our lives and our careers and to our friendship, we are always so grateful for it." Diyah Pera/Warner Bros.; Jeff Spicer/Getty Blake Lively starred in bothSisterhoodand its sequel as the impulsive and athletic Bridget. "I got to that audition and they gave me the lines right there, and it was 10 pages. It was the scene where I opened up for the first time about my mom committing suicide," Lively revealed to EW in 2013. "So it was very shocking to have that be the audition scene. I did it, and it went really well." Since the film's release, Lively entered a new realm of fame by starring as Serena van der Woodsen onGossip Girl(2007–2012) and highlighting her range in projects as diverse as rom-comNew York, I Love You(2008), Boston crime dramaThe Town(2010), and survival horror thrillerThe Shallows(2015). I remember it like it was yesterday, truly, meeting America for the first time," Tamblyn told EW in 2013. "I met her at the auditions for Blake's role.
