And one of the most famous names in program history has made it clear that he wants the job.
Former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, the school's only Heisman Trophy winner, said Monday that he is "100 percent" interested in becoming the Bears' next head coach even though he has never coached a game at any level.
Baylor fired Aranda on Sunday, one day after the Bears lost 25-24 at Kansas when a field goal was blocked in the final minute. It was Baylor's first loss to the Jayhawks since 2007, and it came one week after a 17-6 home loss to TCU snapped a four-game winning streak.
Aranda went 40-40 over six and a half seasons in Waco, with his best season coming in 2021, when he led the Bears to a school-record 12 wins, a Big 12 title, and a Sugar Bowl victory. Since then, however, Baylor gone just 26-31 and currently sits at 4-3 this season.
Joe Klanderman has been named interim coach for the rest of the season, but athletic director Doug McNamee said in an open letter that the search is underway, though a hire likely won't come until December.
"We want to bring in someone who will launch a generation of consistent winning," McNamee wrote, via ESPN . "There are certainly non-negotiables when it comes to how we win and represent Baylor and its Christian mission, but it is imperative that we win because there is no substitute for how it fuels our priorities, our goals, and our future."
Griffin threw his hat into the ring during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday, saying that he has already spoken with McNamee. When Patrick asked if he was interested in the job, Griffin didn't hesitate.
"If Baylor wants to get back to winning and have a university that isn't just respectable on the football field, but one the fans can be proud of, they need people who know what it looks like to win at Baylor," Griffin added in a clip shared by the show . "So yeah, I would 100 percent be interested."
Griffin certainly knows what winning at Baylor looks like. During his 2011 Heisman Trophy season, he threw for 4,293 yards with 37 touchdowns and just six interceptions while adding 699 rushing yards and 10 more scores. The Bears went 10-3 that year, marking the program's first 10-win season since 1980.
After being selected second overall by Washington in the 2012 NFL Draft, Griffin spent seven seasons in the NFL with Washington, the Cleveland Browns, and the Baltimore Ravens. The 36-year-old has since moved into broadcasting and currently works as a college football analyst for Fox Sports.
Needless to say, it would be a massive leap to go from the broadcast booth straight to a Power Four sideline. But that isn't stopping Griffin from trying.
