Phil Mickelson walks in silence in possibly his last U.S. OpenNew Foto - Phil Mickelson walks in silence in possibly his last U.S. Open

OAKMONT, Pa. — As Phil Mickelson, aka Lefty, aka Phil the Thrill, aka FIGJAM, aka one of the two most famous golfers of the 21st century, teed off Thursday in what might be his final U.S. Open, there were more security guards than journalists following him. And there were two security guards. Clad in HyFlyers gear, looking more trim than he ever did during his apex of popularity, Mickelson — like many of his fellow competitors at Oakmont — played well on the back nine and struggled on the front en route to a 4-over 74. And like most of his fellow competitors, he walked in virtual silence from the galleries, with only an occasional "Go Phil!" punctuating the silence. By this point, Mickelson's fall from golf's good graces isn't just well-documented, it's canon. Once the darling of the golf world — the rascally, cocky yin to Tiger Woods' steely yang — Mickelson lived a charmed life, getting himself into and out of trouble both on and off the golf course. He somehow radiated arrogant confidence while remaining a hero of the everyman. But then the Saudis came calling, and Mickelson couldn't resist their siren call, or the chance to stick it to the PGA Tour. Even though Mickelson turned out to be right about the ways the PGA Tour needed to change, the way he went about it with cynical opportunism turned the majority of his former fans against him. Mickelson and the U.S. Open have a long and complicated history all their own. He's finished in second place six different times, an incredible run of almost-good-luck that's kept him from claiming the career grand slam. Matters bottomed out in 2018, when Mickelson, in frustration, hit a still-moving ball at Shinnecock Hills en route to a T48 finish. He's missed the cut at four of the last five U.S. Opens, including the last three. And as of this year, he's all out of the exemptions that he'd earned for winning the 2021 PGA Championship … meaning, if he wants back in, he'll need to either receive a special exemption from the USGA, or play his way back in. "We hope he earns his way in, and I think he'd tell you the same thing," USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer said on Wednesday. "That's what he did last time. We gave him one, and then he went out and won the PGA Championship. So, wouldn't put it past him." Expecting a performance that would qualify him to play in another U.S. Open is a pretty tall order at this point. Mickelson has three top-10 finishes in seven LIV Golf events this year, including a T4 last week in Virginia where he spent time in the lead. For a moment on Thursday, it appeared that momentum had carried through to Oakmont. He made the turn at even par, good enough to stay within sight of the leaders. But a bogey-bogey-double start to his second nine effectively crushed his day, leaving him eight strokes behind clubhouse leader J.J. Spaun. Mickelson declined to speak to the media after he finished, and will have perhaps just one more opportunity to perform before a U.S. Open gallery. Thirty-one years ago, Arnold Palmer also bade farewell to the U.S. Open, also at Oakmont. He walked up the 18th hole to waves of applause and tears. Regardless of how his career has flickered in the last few years, Mickelson will likely receive the same treatment. It will be a well-deserved coda to his career, but you can't help but wonder what the reception would be without the last few years coloring his reputation.

NEW YORK (AP) —The Beach Boys' Mike Lovewas inducted into the2025 Songwriters Hall of Fameon Thursday night, just one day after it was announced that his inimitable bandmateBrian Wilsonhad died. The actor — and lifelong Beach Boys fan — John Stamos introduced him. "There are songs that don't just play on the radio," Stamos said in his speech. "Mike Love is a songwriter's songwriter." Stamos recalled asking Love, "Which songs did you write, again?" Love's response: "I only wrote the hits." Love's speech was filled with gratitude, with one of his greatest thanks reserved for "my cousin, Brian Wilson," he said. "My first cousin by blood and my brother in music." Stamos then joined Love for a fewBeach Boys' classics:"California Girl," "I Get Around," "Kokomo," and "Good Vibrations." It was a notable moment in an evening full of them: The funk rock group Living Colour opened the energetic gala with a cover of Funkadelic's "Cosmic Slop" to honor new inductee George Clinton. The annual event, held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City Thursday night, also featured inductees spanning genre, an inspiring mix of funk, rock, R&B, country and beyond: George Clinton, The Doobie Brothers, Ashley Gorley, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Tony Macaulay. "What an incredible honor this is," Clinton said in his speech. He talked about his early days in the legendaryBrill Building song factory, which he described like going"into Oz."Being a songwriter, to him, required "consistent effort." He then jumped into a performance of his own: The Parliaments' "(I Wanna) Testify." Country legend Garth Brooks introduced the Doobie Brothers with a raucous rendition of "Long Train Runnin'" into "China Grove." When it was time for the inducted members — Tom Johnston,Michael McDonaldand Patrick Simmons — to take the stage, they brought their rootsy rock 'n' roll, kicking off with "Black Water." Teddy Riley introduced the groundbreaking producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, whose touch is heard across countless R&B and pop hits. His speech included an animated impression ofClive Davisand a story about Jerkins' father borrowing $1,200 against his life insurance to get him an '80s sampler, the MPC3000, so he could follow his dreams. "I didn't grow up chasing fame," he said. "I grew up chasing feeling ... Creativity has no limitations." His four children, R.J., Heavenly, Hannah Joy and Royal Jerkins, performed one of his best-known hits, Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine." It was a night for families: Country songwriter superstar Ashley Gorley's daughter also performed one of her dad's originals,Trace Adkins'"You're Gonna Miss This." Dan + Shay also performed a medley of Gorley's hits in his honor, including Morgan Wallen's "Last Night," Carrie Underwood's "All-American Girl" and Post Malone and Wallen's2024 summertime smash "I Had Some Help." When Gorley took the stage for his speech, he said he felt like he was in a "fever dream" or that he has "crashed a royal wedding." Legendary English songwriter Tony Macaulay was also honored. He is best known for such classics as The Foundations' "Baby Now That I've Found You" and "Build Me Up Buttercup," the latter of which was performed for Macaulay by a spirited Debbie Gibson. Musical theater composer Stephen Schwartz was the recipient of the esteemed Johnny Mercer Award; Kristin Chenoweth performed "For Good" from "Wicked" in his honor. Gracie Abramsreceived the eminent Hal David Starlight Award. Last year's inducteesincluded Steely Dan, R.E.M., Timbaland, Hillary Lindsey and Dean Pitchford. At the induction ceremony last summer, R.E.M. stunned attendeesby reunitingfor an acoustic version of their alt-rock hit, "Losing My Religion." The Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1969 to honor those creating popular music. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of a song. Some already in the hall include Gloria Estefan, Carole King, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Lionel Richie, Bill Withers, Neil Diamond and Phil Collins.

With the passing of Beach Boys co-founderBrian Wilson, many fans are revisiting the legendary producer's greatest achievements. Among the many tributes, aresurfaced quotefrom one legendary singer reveals what he believes is the "greatest song ever written" — and it's a Beach Boys track. Back in 2003,Paul McCartneydeclared that one song stands above the rest, calling it the "greatest song ever written." That song is "God Only Knows." McCartney, 82, has repeatedly praised the 1966 track. In a 2007 interview with BBC Radio 1, he shared just how much it means to him. "It's one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it," McCartney reportedly said. "It's really just a love song, but it's brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian." That wasn't the only time McCartney reflected on Wilson's impact. "Brian Wilson sort of proved himself to be a really amazing composer," he toldThe Ronnie Wood Showin 2012. The group began performing as the Pendletones before landing on the name "The Beach Boys" — a decision made by their label to capitalize on the California surf scene. Their 1962 debutSurfin' Safarimarked the beginning of a new wave in pop music. However, by the mid-'60s, the band began evolving beyond their signature "California sound." That shift led to the creation ofPet Soundsin 1966 — a record that is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. While the band continued to rise, Wilson battled personal struggles, including substance abuse throughout the mid-1970s. After overcoming his addiction, he launched a solo career, releasing his first self-titled album in 1988. Wilson continued to create music into his later years. He tragically passed in June 2025, according to his loved ones, at the age of 82. Struggling Rockies snap five-game skid, avoid setting new record for worst start in modern eraNew Foto - Struggling Rockies snap five-game skid, avoid setting new record for worst start in modern era

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies got a win on Thursday and avoided reaching a new low and setting the record for the worst start in the modern era. Orlando Arcia's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inninggave the Rockies an 8-7 winover the San Francisco Giants. It moved Colorado's record to 13-55 — tied with the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the worst. That Red Sox team also won its 68th game. The Rockies are aware of the record, but it is not something they dwell on. "We look at it," Ryan McMahon said. "I know it to a 'T.' I think we all do, man." After a 9-50 start, the Rockies have made some recent headway under interim manager Warren Schaeffer. They are 4-5 in their last nine after breaking a five-game losing streak. "I think we are just playing better baseball," said McMahon, who drew a walk in the ninth inning and scored the winning run. "As long as you focus on that when you are out in the field, the record takes care of itself. We can't get it all back in one day. We have to take it pitch by pitch, day by day." The poor start was "bad, man," he continued. "I think that almost made it a little bit easier, because you don't want to think about it. You want to just focus on what you are doing every day when you get here and keep trying to win more games. "To do what we did today, not give up, keep fighting. I think overall, that's just big. You can look back at that. You can remember we've come back from situations like this before and that It kind of helps you keep going." Arcia has been part of winning organizations in Milwaukee and Atlanta in his 10-year career, and has played in the postseason each of the last seven years. "We're not focusing on what happened in the past," said Arcia, acquired May 28 after being released by Atlanta. "We're taking it day by day. We're just trying to look to the future. I told my people I came here to do a job, and to come out and play and help this team win however I can." ___ AP MLB:https://www.apnews.com/hub/MLB

Scottie Scheffler has frustrating day at the US Open to fall 7 shots off the paceNew Foto - Scottie Scheffler has frustrating day at the US Open to fall 7 shots off the pace

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) —Scottie Schefflerkept coming back to the same answer when asked in different ways how a day that began with optimism at the U.S. Open turned into a 5 1/2-hour slog that left him well off the front page of the leaderboard. "I've probably got to give myself a few more looks," the world's top-ranked player said Thursday after a 3-over 73 left him seven shots behindfront-runner J.J. Spaun. Scheffler was talking about looks for reasonable birdie putts. Those didn't happen nearly enough during 5 1/2 often arduous hours at Oakmont. As for plain old "looks," however, well the three-time major winner had those in abundance. Looks of frustration, like when his drive on the par-5 12th landed in the middle of a fairway that slopes massively from left to right and kept rolling, and rolling, and rolling until it was in the first cut of the course's signature ankle-deep rough. Looks of bafflement, like when his 6-foot par putt at the par-3 13th slid by, causing him to put his hand over his mouth and turn to caddie Ted Scott as if to say, "What just happened?" Looks of anger, like when his wedge from 83 yards on the easy (by Oakmont standards) par-4 14th landed 40 feet past the hole. Scheffler slammed the club into the ground before collecting himself to two-putt. Looks of annoyance. When his 12-foot birdie attempt at the par-4 17th lipped out, Scheffler bent over, pressed his hands on his knees and appeared to sigh before standing back up. That doesn't even include what he described as "sloppy" bogeys on the par-4 third and par-5 fourth, when he found the sand off the tee. It added up to tying his worst opening round in a major ever. He did that at the 2021 Masters, a year before he began a run of dominance not seen since Tiger Woods' prime two decades ago. Heck, he even managed a 1-under 69 at Oakmont as a 19-year-old amateur in 2016. Nine years later, Scheffler's life is very different. When he walked out of the scoring area in the late spring twilight, toddler son Bennett and wife Meredith and other members of his family were waiting. The course, however, remains the same physically and mentally draining task it has always been. There's a reason Scheffler teed off at 1:25 p.m. and didn't tap in for par on 18 until 6:52 p.m. even though there wasn't a hint of rain, or wind or any other external factors to gum up the works. There was only Oakmont being Oakmont. The fairways that Spaun navigated to a 4-under 66 in the morning dried up throughout the kind of muggy, sun-baked day that's been uncommon during Western Pennsylvania's very cool and very wet spring. Scheffler only made two putts over 10 feet, none over the final seven holes and three-putted the par-3 13th. How? He has no idea. Yet he also knows one middling round doesn't necessarily ruin his chances of winning the third leg of the grand slam. Play a little "sharper" in the second round, and he thinks he might be in a better position come the weekend. "When you're playing these types of tests that are this challenging, there's usually still a way to score," he said. He might to find them sooner rather than later. In each of Scheffler's 16 PGA Tour victories, he found himself inside the top 30 after 18 holes. He'll be outside that number when he puts his tee in the ground at No. 10 on Friday morning to start his second round. "I'll clean up some of those mistakes, a couple three putts and stuff like that," he said. "And I think tomorrow will be a better day." ___ AP golf:https://apnews.com/hub/golf

Titans rookie QB Cam Ward talks nonstop, but never misses anything his coach saysNew Foto - Titans rookie QB Cam Ward talks nonstop, but never misses anything his coach says

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Cam Ward talks so much that Tennessee coachBrian Callahanasked the rookie if he needed to wait until the Titans quarterback stopped before calling a play during practice. The answer? Nope.Wardlistens even while talking. The rookie then proves how closely he pays attention by never missing a beat running the next play. "He enters right into the huddle, and he calls the play and doesn't screw up the play call, and I thought that was actually kind of remarkable," Callahan said. "I know I couldn't do that." Ward said Thursday that it's pretty simple for him. TheNo. 1 overall pickinApril's draftout of Miami is always locked in. The talking comes naturally. "What's the point of playing something that you love if you can't have fun with it?" Ward said. "So that's where it comes from. But I mean, I love the game. And so any chance I get, you know, to let somebody know that they can't (mess) with me it really doesn't matter." Ward wrapped up his first offseason Thursday as theTitanscompleted their three-day mandatory minicamp in front of family and a batch of food trucks. Rookies work until June 20, then there's a break until July 22 for training camp when the quarterback competition that really isn't resumes. Callahan has done his best to limit the pressure on the rookie by rotating the start of drillsamong all four quarterbackson the roster even as Ward got more work during this minicamp for a simple reason: As a rookie the Titans need to give him as much experience as possible. Ward has been doing his part, showing up early working with fellow rookies and staying late. They have watched the Titans' 2024 games, practice tape, review the plays being run in practice later that day. All designed to grow together and be on the same page. It's been noticeable enough that Callahan has talked with the rookie about having grinding months ahead. "I'm not telling him what to do, I'm just making the point that there's a lot ahead of him that he's not aware of yet when it comes to this, the length and the week-to-week-to-week grind that comes up for these guys," Callahan said. "It is a marathon." Tyler Lockettis a veteran receiver going into his 11th NFL season and has watched Ward since he played at Washington State. Lockett has been impressed with how Ward understands defenses, gets the ball out and understands timing this early. "I think everybody's able to see exactly what they saw on the film," Lockett said. Ward has had rookie moments. He was picked off twice Thursday, once by linebacker Cody Barton. He rebounded by throwing a nice pass into tight coverage to Bryce Oliver later in a red zone drill for a touchdown. Quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree said Ward has worked hard on his footwork and timing and improved on mechanics such as breaking the huddle and recognizing defenses. Ward's hard work is noticeable in other ways too in how he takes coaching points or corrections. "If he makes a mistake, never make the same mistake twice," Hardegree said. "And that's important to him." Once the rookies start their break, Ward knows he'll be busy studying the playbook and throwing lots of footballs. Thequarterback who worked his wayfrom Incarnate Word to Washington State andMiamibefore becoming the NFL's top draft pick in April knows he'll likely be thinking about football even while showering during the break. Even with his first NFL game still months away, Ward knows his biggest goal for his career: Wins. "The quarterback position will always be judged off wins," Ward said. "So you know I'm just trying to win a lot of games in the NFL in my career. Try to ... help my team win a lot of games." ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Winnipeg Jetsgoalie Connor Hellebuyck picked up a rare double when he won both the Vezina Trophy (outstanding goaltender) and the Hart Trophy, the NHL's MVP award. It's his second consecutive Vezina and third overall, but it's just the fourth time that a goaltender has won the Hart Trophy during the league's post-1967 expansion era. Hellebuyck, the top U.S. goalie at the 4 Nations Face-Off, led the NHL with 47 victories, tied for second most in league history, as the Jets captured the first Presidents' Trophy (top regular-season record) in franchise history. He gave up two or fewer goals in 40 of 63 appearances and led the league (minimum 25 games played) in goals-against average (2.00) and shutouts (eight). He finished second in save percentage (.925). The most recent goalies to win the Hart Trophy were Carey Price (2014-15), Jose Theodore (2001-02) and Dominik Hasek (1996-97 and 1997-98). Hellebuyck is the first repeat Vezina winner since Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Hellebuyck received 81 first-place votes and 1,346 total points in voting by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl was runner-up with 53 first-place votes and 1,209 points. Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov (973 points) was the other finalist.
