Crawford hits a grand slam, Hancock tosses 7 scoreless and the Mariners beat the Guardians 6-0New Foto - Crawford hits a grand slam, Hancock tosses 7 scoreless and the Mariners beat the Guardians 6-0

SEATTLE (AP) — J.P. Crawford hit a grand slam, Emerson Hancock tossed seven scoreless innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-0 on Sunday to complete a sweep. After anRBI single by Miles Mastrobuoniwith one out in the second inning gave the Mariners an early advantage, Crawford opened up the floodgates while the bases were still loaded. Heturned on a hanging sliderfrom Luis Ortiz (3-8) and cranked a home run to right field for the fourth grand slam of his major league career. Mastrobuoni's RBI single alone would have been sufficient, though, for Hancock (3-2). The young right-hander turned in easily the best start of his major league career, yielding only two hits — both of them singles — while walking one batter and striking out four. Hancock was extremely efficient, needing only 85 pitches to make it through seven innings. Relievers Casey Legumina and Eduard Bazardo then followed Hancock to complete the combined shutout, which was just the Mariners' second of the season. They also blanked the Miami Marlins on April 26. Key moment Things went south for Ortiz after he issued a leadoff walk to Randy Arozarena in the second inning. He also walked outfielder Dominic Canzone before Crawford's grand slam gave the Mariners a lead they would not look back from. Key stat Since 2023, Crawford is hitting .593 with 42 RBIs when the bases are loaded. He is a career .400 hitter in such situations. Up next Seattle right-hander Logan Gilbert (1-1, 2.37) will return from the injured list and start for the Mariners on Monday against the Red Sox, who will send out right-hander Lucas Giolito (2-1, 5.45). The Guardians travel to San Francisco for a series-opener on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

USMNT gets relieving win in Gold Cup opener vs. Trinidad and TobagoNew Foto - USMNT gets relieving win in Gold Cup opener vs. Trinidad and Tobago

The 18,000-seat stadium wasdisconcertingly empty. The opponent, Trinidad and Tobago, was overmatched. The stage in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group D was relatively small, and thetroublesome "noise" surrounding the U.S. men's national teamwill remain loud. But enough with the caveats; the USMNT won a game Sunday, and stemmed the tide of negativity around the program, at least for now. It beat Trinidad, 5-0, in its Gold Cup opener at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. Malik Tillman, a potential World Cup starter rising at PSV Eindhoven, scored his first two goals for the national team. Diego Luna was once again active. Defenders were solid, substitutes were purposeful, and at long last, there were smiles. They were just what the USMNT needed afterfour consecutive losses, the program's worst run in 18 years.Back-to-back defeats at the CONCACAF Nations League finals in Marchsparked questions about the commitment and desire of key players. Many of those players are nowaway from the team, either to recover from injury or to compete at theClub World Cupor to rest. In their absence, a2-1 loss to Türkiyeand a 4-0 embarrassment by Switzerland deepened the malaise. And all the while, former players-turned-pundits inflamed the discourse around the team.Christian Pulisic's father took exception and clapped back. Pulisic himself felt the need to give an extended interview todefend his decision to opt out of the Gold Cup. It onlyraised more questions about his relationship with head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has failed to lift the USMNT as promised. But on Sunday, temporarily, all was forgotten. The win over Trinidad at least distracted fans from all those distractions. Rather than talk about Pulisic, they could talk about the guys filling his positions: Tillman, Luna and the always-smooth Jack McGlynn, and a couple intriguing fullbacks. GOOOOAAAL@USMNT!! 🇺🇸Malik Tillman scores the opener!pic.twitter.com/n957dsL36z — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer)June 15, 2025 Of course, it is highly unlikely that any of them takes Pulisic's position permanently — unless Pochettino goes scorched earth and punishes his star. It is also highly unlikely that anything from Sunday's match matters in the long run — because the opponents, the Soca Warriors, provided so little real resistance. But it was still meaningful, because it was a relief. When the first goal went in, leaning back in his seat on the bench, Pochettino simply clenched his fist. When the second and third came, celebrations were muted, but, among the players, cleansing happiness was evident. BRACE FOR TILLMAN! 🇺🇸@USMNTup 2-0! 👏pic.twitter.com/CM6kVNq9YA — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer)June 15, 2025 And, who knows, perhaps this will be the start of Tillman's charge into an influential role. With Gio Reyna's career at a standstill, the USMNT has been starving for a central playmaker to complement Pulisic and Tim Weah; Tillman has the talent and the track record at his Dutch club to be that. Perhaps this is also the start of a turnaround and a successful summer. It will not be the World Cup dress rehearsal that many originally hoped, and it will not rebuild public buzz around the national team. But it can build positivity within the group, and absolutely could end with a Gold Cup title. Up next for the U.S. is a Thursday match against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas.

Ride's life partner Tam O'Shaughnessy opens up about their 27-year romance inSally, which premiered at the 2025Sundance Film Festivalin January and will debut on Nat Geo June 16 and stream on Disney+ beginning June 17. The documentary covers Ride's rise at NASA to become the first American woman in space in 1983 as well as her lesser-told love story, which started in the '80s. Though they kept their relationship hidden from the public for decades, O'Shaughnessy says that changed right before Ride died in 2012 of complications from pancreatic cancer at age 61. Carla Cioffi/NASA via Getty "Ten days before she died, I asked her how I should be to the public," O'Shaughnessy tells PEOPLE. "I was holding sort of a public celebration of her life, and then a national tribute at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. And it was like, 'So who am I?' " "Our friends and family knew, and people guessed. It didn't feel honest," she continues. "She told me, you decide what you want to say, how open you want to be about our relationship." O'Shaughnessy doesn't hold back on sharing her and Ride's intimate moments in the documentary. Since Ride was such a private person and the couple only had a few photos together,Sallydirector Cristina Costantini says they relied on filming recreations of actors that were "all inspired directly from Tam's memory." O'Shaughnessy, whose childhood friendship with Ride became romantic in 1985, says she hopes the film will help people understand their relationship and ultimately portray an American hero "as who she really was." "We had a wonderful relationship from the time we were kids until we became lovers," O'Shaughnessy says. "I think it's something to be proud of." NASA/Interim Archives/Getty Costantini praises O'Shaughnessy's vulnerability and humor as a narrator in the film, saying that her participation "changed everything." "Sally is so closed off in her communication that Tam was the closest and most intimate voice that we could get to Sally," the film's producer, Lauren Cioffi, adds. O'Shaughnessy says there are a few moments in herSallyinterview reel "where I sort of break down." "When I was describing my relationship with Sally, and especially when Sally got sick, I got teary-eyed, and it just got me all the way through to my heart and guts," she says. "And that was a little bit of a surprise." Sallypremieres on Nat Geo June 16 and will stream on Disney+ beginning June 17. Read the original article onPeople

Dodger Stadium singer confirms she performed national anthem in Spanish to protest ICE, in defiance of teamNew Foto - Dodger Stadium singer confirms she performed national anthem in Spanish to protest ICE, in defiance of team

An interesting national anthem was performed at Dodger Stadium on Saturday — and not because the team wanted it. Rather than sing the traditional "The Star-Spangled Banner," Vanessa Hernández, who performs under the name Nezza, sang "El Pendón Estrellado," the official Spanish version of the anthem commissioned by the U.S. government under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945. She apparently did so in defiance of the Dodgers' instructions, as she posted a TikTok following the performance showing an unidentified employee explicitly telling her the song should be in English. "We are going to do the song in English today, so I don't know if that wasn't translated — er, communicated," the employee said. Nezza's caption: "Watch the Dodgers tell me I can't sing the Spanish Star Spangled Banner that Roosevelt literally commissioned in 1945 — so I did it anyway." Wearing a shirt with the flag and colors of her native Dominican Republic, an emotional Nezza paused for tears before delivering the song's final line. In a different video, Nezza confirmed that she performed the song as a protest on the part of the Latino community as the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency continues to carry out raids in Los Angeles: "I didn't think I would be met with any sort of 'No,' especially because we're in L.A. with everything happening. I've sang the national anthem many times in my life, but today I could not. I'm sorry ... I just could not believe, when she walked in and told me 'No,' but I just felt like I needed to do it, para mi gente [for my people]. "My parents are immigrants. They've been citizens my whole life at this point, they got documented really early, but I just can't imagine them being ripped away from me, even at this age, let alone a little kid. Like, what are we doing?" Despite Nezza saying "Safe to say I'm never allowed in that stadium ever again,"The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya reportsthat she was not punished or ejected from Dodger Stadium and is not expected to be banned from the stadium. The team reportedly declined comment on her videos. The Dodgers won Saturday's game 11-5. ICE has been raiding locations throughout Los Angeles since June 6, triggering protests across the city and major political disputes between local politicians and President Donald Trump's administration, most notably the arrest of Sen. Alex Padilla while confronting Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Both California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass have urged ICE to leave, but Trump has gone as far as mobilizing the California National Guard and deploying hundreds of Marines in the city. A federal judge ruled Friday that Trump's federalization of the National Guard was illegal, but the order to return control to Newsom has been paused pending an appeal this week. Trump himself has somewhat backtracked amid the chaos, directing officers to halt arresting employees at farms, hotels and restaurants. Arrests have continued at other locations. The Dodgers and many of the other major teams in the Los Angeles area have largely remained silent about the current events, though exceptions include MLS's LAFC and the NWSL's Angel City. LAFC released a statement expressing solidarity with the community amid "fear and uncertainty," while Angel City went a step further with shirts reading "Immigrant City Football Club." Veteran utility man Kiké Hernández said he is "saddened and infuriated by what's happening in our country and our city," and that he "cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart." Former Dodgers first baseman Adrián González, who now works for the team as a broadcaster, called the raids "unconstitutional" and "illegal," urging the government to stop separating families. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Adrián González OLY (@adrian_eltitan) Meanwhile, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who has spoken on social justice issues in the past, pleaded ignorance about the issues on Friday, per The Athletic: "Honestly, I don't know enough, to be quite honest with you. I know that when you're having to bring people in and deport people, all the unrest, it's certainly unsettling for everyone. But I haven't dug enough and can't speak intelligently on it." Perhaps Hernández can give him some details.

'How to Train Your Dragon' soars in box office debut with $83.7 million, beating 'Lilo & Stitch'New Foto - 'How to Train Your Dragon' soars in box office debut with $83.7 million, beating 'Lilo & Stitch'

LOS ANGELES (AP) —"How to Train Your Dragon"took flight at the box office this weekend, proving that someremakes still have teeth. The Universal live-action adaptation of the beloved animated franchise soared to a strong $83.7 million debut in North American theaters, according to Comscore estimates Sunday. The film, directed by franchise veteran Dean DeBlois, follows the unlikely friendship between a young Viking named Hiccup (Mason Thames) and a dragon called Toothless. The reboot easily outpaced 2019's"How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,"which opened with $55 million. The latest film earned more than $114.1 million internationally, bringing the global total to $197.8 million. "This is yet another example of a live-action remake really delivering on the promise of the marketing," said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. "I think the longevity and playability of some of these films particularly in the summer has been nothing short of miraculous." "How to Train" also claimed the No. 1 spot ahead of Disney's "Lilo & Stitch," which slipped to second place after topping the charts for three weekends. That hybrid live-action remake added another $15 million, pushing its domestic total past $386.3 million. "Materialists,"a modern-day New York love story starringDakota Johnson,Pedro Pascal, andChris Evans, rounded out the top three films of the week with a $12 million debut. The romantic dramedy features Johnson as a savvy matchmaker caught between two suitors: a broke, struggling actor who happens to be her ex, and a wealthy "unicorn" who seems too good to be true. "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning"slid to fourth place, taking in $10.3 million and avoiding a dip into single-digit territory. The John Wick spinoff"Ballerina"fell to fifth place with $9.4 million, despite strong reviews from both critics and audiences. Directed by Len Wiseman, the action film starsAna de Armasand features Keanu Reeves reprising his role in a supporting turn. Dergarabedian said "Ballerina" could have a surge later down the line similar to 2014's "John Wick." "It took a while for that franchise to really catch on," he said. "You saw a huge outpouring of interest for the first 'John Wick' when it hit home video or streaming, I should say, and I think the same will happen here." In sixth place, "Karate Kid: Legends" earned $5 million followed by "Final Destination: Bloodlines" at seventh with $3.9 million. Wes Anderson's latest"The Phoenician Scheme"brought in $3 million eighth place. "The Life of Chuck," based on a Stephen King story, placed ninth with $2.1 million. Rounding out the top 10 was "Sinners." The Ryan Coogler film starring Michael B. Jordan, drew $1.4 million - which is impressive since the movie is available to watch at home through online and digital platforms after being released two months ago. Overall, the box office is up 23% from this point in 2024. Dergarabedian said he's looking forward to films in the coming weeks that could have a positive presence at the box office, such as "Eilo," "F1," "Superman" and "28 Days Later." Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. "How to Train Your Dragon," $83.7 million 2. "Lilo and Stitch," $15.5 million. 3. "Materialists," $12 million. 4. "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," $10.3 million. 5. "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina," $9.4 million. 6. "Karate Kid: Legends," $5 million. 7. "Final Destination: Bloodlines," $3.9 million. 8. "The Phoenician Scheme," $3 million. 9. "The Life of Chuck," $2.1 million. 10. "Sinners," $1.4 million.
