Will Tyrese Haliburton play in NBA Finals Game 6? Decision is complicated, experts sayNew Foto - Will Tyrese Haliburton play in NBA Finals Game 6? Decision is complicated, experts say

Tyrese Haliburton, even with a strained right calf thatraised questions about his availabilityfor Game 6 of the NBA Finals, has managed to keep the basketball world on its heels. "If I can walk, then I want to play," Haliburton said Mondayafter the calf injury he aggravated in Game 5 clearly affected himduring theIndiana Pacers' loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which left the Pacers trailing 3-2 in the best-of-7 series. The day before Game 6, set for Thursday, June 19, Haliburton said he is a competitor and wants to play yet also remarked: "I have to understand the risks, ask the right questions…" Cynics may think Haliburton is trying to keep the Thunder guessing (his coach said he "probably will be a game-time decision for Game 6"). But two orthopedic surgeons who have worked with NBA teams told USA TODAY Sports that decisions about whether to play with an injury are complex. "An ankle sprain can be two hours of conversation,'' said Brian Cole, head team physician for theChicago Bullssince 2005. "X-rays, X-rays, repeated MRIs. Talking to different levels of trainers, the family, the agent. "Especially at a time where you're dealing like this, where it matters more than ever.'' Why it matters: The Pacers are trying to win their first NBA championship in franchise history. It's hard to imagine them doing it without Haliburton, their All-Star point guard. But it's unlikely Haliburton will play without conferring with his agent, said Robert Anderson, a member of the NBA's committee studying ankle sprains and team orthopedist for the NFL'sGreen Bay Packers. Anderson said an MRI, which the Pacers said Haliburton had, usually will go to two consultants. Then the risks of playing with the injury are assessed, said Anderson, who said the player and agent then likely will discuss the risks involving the injury. "It also becomes a business decision,'' Anderson said. Willis Reed limped out of the locker room with a leg injury before Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers andNew York Knicks. Reed, then the Knicks' star center, gritted through the pain and helped the Knicks win the NBA championship. Fifty-five years later, the story epitomizes toughness. Fair or not, the "pain threshold" likely will become part of the conversation regarding whether or not Haliburton plays. "Athletes play in pain all the time,'' Cole said. "It's an issue of what they can tolerate and if their mechanics are compromised in any meaningful way.'' William McGarvey, an orthopedic surgeon who worked for theHouston Rockets, pointed out that pain depends on how a player functions. McGarvey also noted that Haliburton is a triple threat, with the Pacers star averaging 17.9 points, 9.1 assists and 5.8 rebounds during the playoffs. "If he's just bringing the ball up, distributing or in a position where he is just jumping up and down, trying to grab a rebound, it's a little more controlled,'' McGarvey told USA TODAY Sports. "But if he's jumping for a rebound, if he's going up for a layup or a dunk, he's got to push off. He could hurt himself on landing. He could hurt himself if he's going up against another player. These guys get in awkward positions and they have to be fairly agile to be able to land effectively and things like that. "The other issue here is how the injury is affecting him. Is it causing him to just have pain when he pushes off or is it because it's irritated? Is it causing him spasms so that even when he's sitting and resting, he's getting a crampy feeling in his leg?" Keith Jones, an athletic trainer who has worked for the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets, said of a muscle sprain: "Normally you'd do seven days of really not much, and then you reassess.'' No such luck for the Pacers, who had less than 72 hours after Game 5 to potentially get Haliburton ready for Game 6. Jones said he would prescribe hands-on therapy, be it massage or other manipulation of the muscle or muscle tissue. "But a lot of ice, a lot of rest,'' he said. "You could put someone in a boot just to take the strain off of it so ... they're walking on a boot instead of the heel-toe motion. Really isolate it and let it rest. Keep it elevated. Try to avoid inflammation, (there's) anti-inflammatory medications you can take. But the main thing is the body heals on its own. "You can't speed it up. You can do things to create a better environment for healing to take place. But it's going to heal when it's supposed to heal." Cole said the treatment options are limited. "If it's a calf strain, a true muscle strain, not a tendon, but muscle strain, they take a while to heal and there's no magic,'' he said. "You can't inject anything in there. You can't give any kind of medications. There's no special hyperbaric oxygen or anything that's going to cure this thing in that period of time. "So, it's just, is he a good healer? How bad is the strain? I haven't seen the MRI, so I don't know. … There's just not a lot of time to let a muscle injury recover if that's where it is." Haliburton said he expected treatment to be near-constant. "I think just around-the-clock stuff as much as I can," Haliburton said. "Massage, needles, hyperbaric, H waves. Everything you can do to get as comfortable as you can going into it. The right tape and stuff while I am performing. I'm sure there's a bunch of medical professionals who could give you a better answer. Just doing everything I'm told. Trying to do everything I can." The mention of Kevin Durant might create fear for Pacer fans, if not Haliburton. During the 2019 playoffs, Durant, then playing for the Golden State Warriors, missed nine games with a calf injury. He returned to action during Game 5 of the 2019 Finals, with the Warriors trailing the Toronto Raptors 3-1. Two minutes into the second quarter, Durant ruptured his Achilles tendon, which sidelined him for about 18 months. The three orthopedic surgeons who spoke to USA TODAY Sports said there is no evidence that a strained calf can lead to a ruptured Achilles tendon. "I would argue that playing with the strained calf just runs the risk of getting an escalation of symptoms related to the strained calf,'' Cole said. "But ... an Achilles tendon ruptures in a very different location. A strained calf injury is a little bit higher up. "So, I think that we would typically let a player play if they can tolerate the ability to play basketball, cut, pivot, change direction, and so forth. If they can tolerate all that, then we let them play.'' Anderson said Durant had preexisting issues with his Achilles tendon. He said an MRI would provide the Pacers clear evidence of whether the injury stems from the Achilles tendon or muscles above the tendon associated with calf strains. "So when you have a calf strain, if it's in the muscle, there's absolutely no increased risk of Achilles tendon rupture,'' Anderson said. While talking about Haliburton, McGarvey said was he reminded of Michael Jordan playing with the flu during Game 5 of the 1997 Finals. Jordan scored 38 points and led the Chicago Bulls to a victory over the Utah Jazz. "If you know your injury isn't going to be a career threatening thing, then it's really up to the individual as to how much they can tolerate and how much they want to go out there,'' McGarvey said. "And leaders tend to get out and deal with it.'' This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Tyrese Haliburton injury presents complex NBA Finals Game 6 decision

Buss family to sell controlling stake of Lakers to Mark Walter for $10B valuation, AP source saysNew Foto - Buss family to sell controlling stake of Lakers to Mark Walter for $10B valuation, AP source says

The Buss family has agreed to sell the controlling stake of the Los Angeles Lakers to TWG Global CEO Mark Walter, doing so with a franchise valuation of $10 billion — the highest ever for a professional sports franchise, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Wednesday. As part of the deal, Jeanie Buss — whose family has had control of the Lakers since her father bought the team in 1979 — intends to remain as team governor, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side immediately announced details. It is not clear how much more of the Lakers that Walter is acquiring. He was part of a group that bought 27% of the Lakers in 2021. Jeanie Buss will still own at least 15% of the Lakers once this transaction is completed; by NBA rule, a governor must have at least that much of an ownership stake. Walter andTWG Globalalready had the controlling interest in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Premier League club Chelsea, theProfessional Women's Hockey League, and — through TWG Motorsports — owns several auto racing teams includingCadillac Formula 1. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said news of the sale to Walter marks "a very exciting day for the Lakers, for the city of Los Angeles." "He's very competitive and he's going to do everything he can to produce a championship-caliber team every single year and make sure the city feels proud about the Lakers and the legacy that they've already built with the Buss family," Roberts said. ESPN first reported the agreement. "Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand," Lakers legend Magic Johnson, a business partner of Walter's and someone extremely close to Jeanie Buss, posted on social media. "The proof is in the pudding on what he's been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers. Mark has been nothing short of a winner notching 2 World Series and 11 NL West divisional titles in the last 12 years!" Johnson said he is certain Jeanie Buss made the deal only after being convinced that Walter will do right by the Lakers. "Laker fans should be (ecstatic)," Johnson said. "A few things I can tell you about Mark — he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way. AND he will put in the resources needed to win! I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike — they are competitive people, have big hearts, love to give back, and both prefer to be behind the scenes. This makes all the sense in the world." Walter is intensely private in shunning the spotlight. He is CEO of the financial services firm Guggenheim Partners, which is estimated to have more than $325 billion in assets. Johnson is among Guggenheim's investors. The agreement for the sale of the Lakers comes about three months after Bill Chisholm agreed to buy the Boston Celtics with an initial valuation of $6.1 billion — which was going to be a record, topping the previous mark of $6.05 billion sale for the NFL's Washington Commanders. The Celtics' sale is not yet finalized, pending final approval by the NBA's board of governors. That board is scheduled to meet in Las Vegas next month. And now, the Lakers are sold with a valuation of $10 billion — not just a record, but a total smashing of the previous mark. The Lakers have been in the control of the Buss family for 46 years, the longest of any current NBA franchise. Herb Simon bought the Indiana Pacers — currently in the NBA Finals — in 1983, the second-longest current ownership of an NBA club. Jerry Buss bought the Lakers for $67.5 million and made it to the NBA Finals 16 times out of his 34 seasons leading the club, winning 10 championships in that span. When he died in 2013, ownership of the Lakers went into a trust controlled by Buss' six children — who all worked for the Lakers in various capacities for several years. Eventually, the family began clashing over control. An agreement was struck in 2017 calling for Jeanie Buss to serve as controlling owner, ending a battle that included her going to court after her brothers Jim and Johnny Buss called for a board meeting that she interpreted as a challenge to her power — shortly after she removed Jim Buss as the Lakers' executive vice president of basketball operations. ___ AP Sports Writers Beth Harris and John Wawrow contributed to this story. ___ AP NBA:https://apnews.com/nba

Bride Feels 'Disrespected' After Family Members Brought Fast Food to Her 'Elegant' Catered WeddingNew Foto - Bride Feels 'Disrespected' After Family Members Brought Fast Food to Her 'Elegant' Catered Wedding

Getty (2) A bride shared on Reddit that she and the groom planned an "elegant brunch reception" at a venue owned by a "renowned" chef to celebrate their wedding reception She said her uncle's family, seemingly not enticed by the catered spread, snuck in fried chicken from a fast food restaurant and ate it "openly" at one of the reception tables "I'm struggling with feeling like I was disrespected on a day that we put so much time, money, energy and thought into planning," the bride wrote A bride says she and the groom booked a venue owned by a "renowned" chef to host an "elegant brunch reception" to celebrate their wedding — only to have some of her family members sneak in their own fast food to eat. She shared her story in a post onReddit's "Wedding Planning" forum, beginning by detailing how the couple "meticulously" planned "every single aspect" of their big day, including curating a brunch spread. "We hand-selected our menu items months in advance, including shrimp and grits, quiche, a biscuit bar with assorted jellies, sausage, and bacon, chicken and waffles, and much, much more," the bride wrote, noting that it cost "about $98 per person." While the couple was excited to treat their guests to an unforgettable meal, the bride's uncle and his family had other ideas. The family stopped at a fast-food restaurant on the way to the reception to get fried chicken to eat in the car. While she had no issue with this, it was what happened next that left her fuming. When the family arrived at the reception, her uncle's wife "took a look at all the food we had meticulously chosen to serve, and exited to the parking lot to retrieve the leftover fast food." According to the bride, the family then proceeded to eat the fried chicken "openly at one of our decorated round tables." Getty "What makes it worse is they not only took pictures of themselves eating the fast food at the table (with the brand packaging all out in the open), but they have now posted those pictures on Facebook on two separate occasions," she noted. "The latest post was a Father's Day post, and one of our other family members made a comment, something to the effect of 'nothing classier than bringing (fast food) to a catered wedding!' And they LAUGHED at it!!!! Like it's a big joke," she continued. The bride said she and her mom were "hurt" by their family members' behavior — and she can't seem to get past it. "I'm struggling with feeling like I was disrespected on a day that we put so much time, money, energy and thought into planning, and every time they post about it just digs the knife in deeper," she explained. She concluded her post by asking fellow Reddit users whether she is overreacting or justified in being upset. In the comments section, many readers agreed with the bride that her family members were "rude" to bring fast food into the reception. But they also encouraged her to let it go and not allow the incident spoil the memories of her special day. Getty "I wouldn't waste energy on it anymore. They were embarrassing themselves, and that menu sounds very agreeable so everyone else probably loved it," one person wrote. Don't let their lack of decency linger in your mind longer than it deserves to." Some commenters even suggested that this will be something the couple will be able to laugh about one day and treat as a funny wedding anecdote. "Someday you and hubby will laugh about this together... and that day might come sooner than you think," one person wrote, adding, "Your wedding sounded absolutely gorgeous. Try to focus on the other 99% that was perfect, to help you move past this small blip." Read the original article onPeople

Will Smith's dramatic pinch-hit home run in the 9th lifts Dodgers over Padres 4-3New Foto - Will Smith's dramatic pinch-hit home run in the 9th lifts Dodgers over Padres 4-3

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Will Smith hit a tiebreaking home run in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers over the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Wednesday night. The Padres tied the game at 3 in the top of the inning on Jake Cronenworth's bases-loaded sacrifice fly off reliever Justin Wrobleski (2-2) and Xander Bogaerts' RBI double to center. Smith, a pinch hitter, connected on a 90 mph changeup from closer Robert Suarez (1-3) for the Dodgers' 25th comeback win of the season. After four players were hit by pitches in the first two games of the series and Dodgers managerDave Roberts was ejected on Tuesday, Andy Pages was hit on his left shoulder by a 91 mph cutter by Stephen Kolek in the seventh. Pages was plunked by Padres starter Dylan Cease on Monday. With the umpires watching, Kolek and Pages exchanged nods as Kolek left the game one out later. The first-place Dodgers won their fifth in a row and improved to 5-1 against the Padres. Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan allowed one run over four innings of his first major league start in 1 1/2 years after having Tommy John surgery in May 2024. The Dodgers got their offense from the bottom of the lineup, including a two-run single from rookie Dalton Rushing in the fifth. The Dodgers' top four hitters — Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hern谩ndez — were a combined 1 for 16. Key moment San Diego's Manny Machado grounded into a fielder's choice to third in the ninth. Muncy's throw was low to the outfield side and second baseman Edman didn't get his glove down as the ball rolled past him, giving the Padres two runners on instead of a potential double play. Key stat Ohtani struck out with the bases loaded in the seventh, extending his hitless skid to 0 for 8 since making his Dodgers pitching debut on Monday. Up next Padres RHP Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.33 ERA) starts Thursday's series finale. Sri Lanka's Nissanka leads composed response to Bangladesh's 495 in 1st cricket testNew Foto - Sri Lanka's Nissanka leads composed response to Bangladesh's 495 in 1st cricket test

GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka reached 100 for one at lunch on Day 3 of the first cricket test in a composed response toBangladesh's first-innings total of 495. Pathum Nissanka led the charge with a display of silken stroke play, peppering the off-side with a series of elegant drives. There was a moment of drama when, on 36, he offered a chance but Mominul Haque dropped a sharp attempted catch at short leg off Nayeem Hasan's first over. At the interval, Nissanka remained unbeaten on 46 and was joined by Dinesh Chandimal, who was unbeaten on 22 and anchoring the innings with his usual composure. The only Sri Lanka wicket to fall in Thursday's morning session was Lahiru Udara for 29. The 31-year-old righthander had shown early promise but fell to a soft dismissal — a leading edge ballooning back to left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. It was a tame end to what had promised to be a bright beginning in the test format. Bangladesh's seamers, in particular Nahid Rana, bowled strongly. The 22-year-old paceman beat the bat repeatedly without reward in a spell that contained good pace, discipline and a bit of zip off the surface. Earlier in the morning session, it took Sri Lanka just 16 deliveries to finish off the Bangladesh innings. From a position of strength at 458 for four late on Day 2, the tourists unravelled and eventually lost their last six wickets for 37 runs. Asitha Fernando, bustling in with purpose and precision, was the spearhead of the Sri Lanka revival, claiming four wickets with admirable rhythm. He was ably supported by Milan Rathnayake, whose pace and clever variations earned him three wickets. On debut, Tharindu Rathnayake, bowling with composure that belied his inexperience, chipped in with three crucial wickets. For the better part of two days, it was almost one-way with Mushfiqur Rahim playing with poise in compiling a masterful 163 — an innings built on judgment, timing and grit. His 264-run partnership with Najmul Hossain Shanto, who posted 148, was the cornerstone of Bangladesh's early dominance. ___ AP cricket:https://apnews.com/hub/cricket

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Deep within the Blue Ridge Mountains, the historical Biltmore Estate Hilltop Inn rises above an ocean of rolling greenery, its high stone walls and floor-to-ceiling windows all tucked between two giant peaks: Mount Mitchell and Mount Pisgah. The two mountains loom like sentries, dominating the blue skyline, unmistakable giants in this scenic land. Inside the Biltmore, two goliaths within the landscape of college sports, the SEC and Big Ten, are at odds on the future of the industry's most valuable product: the College Football Playoff. Can these mountains be moved? Well, here this week, CFP leaders took steps toward a change to the playoff selection process — yet another chapter in what's already been a laborious journey toward potential expansion to 16 teams. The 10 FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director received a presentation from executive director Rich Clark and data analysts over adjustments to selection committee criteria in an effort to salvage the committee's role itself and appease both Big Ten and SEC leaders — the two entities that, according to a memorandum signed last spring, control future format decisions. Whether such a change brings the two conferences together on a format remains unclear. The two leagues must agree on a playoff model for it to move forward, Clark said on Wednesday from the Biltmore Inn, confirming what's been previously reported based on last spring's memorandum. But, for now, they are at an impasse. The Big Ten wants a playoff where access is more like the NFL structure, determined through automatic qualifiers based on conference standings to limit the subjectivity of the selection committee. And the league also supports all four leagues — including the SEC and ACC — to play nine conference games as the Big Ten and Big 12 do. The SEC moved away from such a playoff format afterits coaches publicly pushed back against it three weeks agoduring the conference's spring meetings, instead now working toward a format that provides a bigger at-large pool, such as a 16-team model with five automatic qualifiers for conference champions and 11 at-large selections (5+11). However, in any 5+11 format, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, his coaches and athletic directors have been very clear: They want to see a change in the selection process to more heavily emphasize strength of schedule and strength of conference. For the most part, that's what this set of CFP meetings centered around here this week. Clark, entering his second year as CFP executive director, presented, along with a data analyst from SportsSource Analytics, "recommendations" on just how to adjust data points that the selection committee uses. With assistance from a Google mathematician and university math professor, the presentation included the creation of a strength-of-record metric to more heavily weight a team's strength of schedule, conference strength and, in particular, non-conference games. In fact, commissioners heard from experts who encouraged the scheduling of more crossover games among the four power leagues — a way, presumably, to provide more data points of rating the league strength. Commissioners gave Clark and the CFP staff feedback, about potentially rewriting some language of the protocol used by selection committee members. CFP leaders will now "mull it over," Clark said, before the group continues to meet throughout the summer in an effort to reach an expansion decision by Dec. 1 — the drop-dead date for 2026 expansion. Commissioners declined to comment on this week's meeting. Three of the four power conference commissioners, in fact, shuffled into an elevator together here after their meeting. As reporters fired questions toward them, the elevator doors closed. The fourth power league commissioner, Big Ten's Tony Petitti, did not attend meetings in person but was in attendance virtually. Clark spoke in their absence. The same format options that have existed continue to exist, he said. "There are a lot of options. You've heard all of the options." While not mentioning them, they are obvious. 1) Remain at the same 12-team format: 5 AQs + 7 at-large, which isn't necessarily the preference, Sankey said a few weeks ago. 2) Expand to a 14-team event: 5 AQs + 9 at-large, which isn't as desirable as the next option. 3) Move to a 16-team field: 5+11 or the Big Ten's AQ-heavy proposal that grants twice as many bids to each the SEC and Big Ten (4 each) as the ACC and Big 12 (2). "The format could be a lot different in 2026 or could be the same," Clark said. Staying at 12 for 2026 is a grim reality for some, but it's a possibility, perhaps even a probability as negotiations creep closer to the Dec. 1 deadline. If the SEC and Big Ten do not agree on a format, there may not be a change at all. When specifically asked about the Big Ten and SEC having to both agree on format, Clark said, "They are obligated to come to an agreement on what the format is. They will determine that between the parties and will go forward from there. "Rushing to a bad decision is not in any of our best interest," he said later. "They're looking at any and all options and understanding what the pros and cons are to those things rather than rush to something that may not suit us." Would the Big Ten really block expansion to 16 if the rest of the 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame agree on the 5+11 format? Perhaps. Illinois head coach Bret Bielema gestured toward that during an interview on Tuesday in Chicago. "I don't think there's any way we could do a 16-team playoff if [the SEC] is not at nine [conference] games," he said. Can these two mountains be moved? Asked that question here Wednesday, one CFP leader smiled and quipped, "We'll get there."
