"Materialists" Totally Set Dakota Johnson's Character for Up Failure and You Can't Convince Us Otherwise

A24 Materialistsposes the question of whether or not we should be going for love or for money and the choice Dakota Johnson's character makes has people on internet divided The film also stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans Materialistsis in theaters now Movies have long wanted to convince us that we should be marrying for love. FromThe NotebooktoTitanic, films have always suggested that women should follow their hearts and go for the sweet charmer with no money instead of the well-established gentleman who has financial stability. (Granted, Billy Zane's character inTitanicwas awful, but stay with me here.) Well,Materialistshas repurposed that trope once again, and the internet is seething. The film follows Lucy (played byDakota Johnson), a successful matchmaker who has managed to find love for everyone except for herself. Her skills are immediately tested when she finds herself in a love triangle with Harry (played byPedro Pascal), a successful billionaire who errs on the side of superficiality but is offering her the world, vs. John (played byChris Evans), her ex-boyfriend, who offers her lots of love and affection, but works from gig to gig while trying to get an acting career off the ground. The film takes us through all the hijinks of a romcom as both men have their pros and cons and try to woo her. In the end, Lucy goes for John, the broke boy who loves her dearly, but can't provide her with the lifestyle she always dreamed of. View this post on Instagram A post shared by People Magazine (@people) And while the internet is upset over the fact that Pedro Pascal doesn't get the girl, the truth of the matter is, Lucy was set up for failure from the jump. As PEOPLE editorBailey Richardspointed out. Regardless of whom she was going to end up with, Lucy was going to be settling. "I don't think she should have ended up with either of them," Richards says, considering Bailey's options. "Marry this hot, caring man who will pay for everything for you for the rest of your life — any materialistic whim you may have. He doesn't love you, but he will pay anything. Or a hot, caring man who does love you, but makes no money ... he will drop anything, at any given moment to do whatever for you." Atsushi Nishijima/A24 We can all agree that the only real winners are Lucy's children (if she wants any), who will 100% win the genetic lottery regardless of which guy she chooses. However, when it comes to meeting the standards Lucy deeply desires, she's bound to lose regardless. So, instead of settling for the loverboy with no money, Richards believes Lucy should have actually axed both men. Never miss a story — sign up forPEOPLE's free daily newsletterto stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. "After everything that she, as a matchmaker, as a woman, goes through in that movie, she just needs to break from romance altogether and do some introspection, the kind that requires you to be single and be alone," says Richards. Personally, the right choice for me is always Pedro Pascal. But I have to agree with my colleague here. Relationships are hard, even when you find everything you want in a person, so why give yourself more heartache by settling for someone who doesn't meet your standards? Paris' iconic cauldron from the Olympic Games returns to light up summer nightsNew Foto - Paris' iconic cauldron from the Olympic Games returns to light up summer nights

PARIS (AP) — A year after it captivated crowds during theParis Olympics, a centerpiece of the summer Games is making a comeback. The iconic helium-poweredballoonthat attracted myriads of tourists during the summer Games has shed its Olympic branding and is now just called the "Paris Cauldron." It is set to rise again into the air later Saturday, lifting off over the Tuileries Garden. Around 30,000 people are expected to attend the launch, which coincides with France's annual street music festival — the Fete de la Musique, the Paris police prefecture said. And it won't be a one-time event. After Saturday's flight, the balloon will lift off into the sky each summer evening from June 21 to Sept. 14, for the next three years. The cauldron's ascent may become a new rhythm of the Parisian summer, with special flights planned for Bastille Day on July 14 and the anniversary of the 2024 opening ceremony on July 26. Gone is the official "Olympic" branding — forbidden under IOC reuse rules — butthe spectacleremains. The 30-meter (98-foot) -tall floating ring, dreamed up by French designerMathieu Lehanneurand powered by French energy company EDF, simulates flame without fire: LED lights, mist jets and high-pressure fans create a luminous halo that hovers above the city at dusk, visible from rooftops across the capital. Though it stole the show in 2024, the cauldron was only meant to be temporary, not engineered for multi-year outdoor exposure. To transform it into a summer staple, engineers reinforced it. The aluminum ring and tether points were rebuilt with tougher components to handle rain, sun and temperature changes over several seasons. Though it's a hot-air-balloon-style, the lift comes solely from helium — no flame, no burner, just gas and engineering. The structure first dazzled during the Olympics. Over just 40 days, it drew more than 200,000 visitors, according to officials. Now anchored in the center of the drained Tuileries pond, the cauldron's return is part of French President Emmanuel Macron's effort to preserve the Games' spirit in the city, as Paris looks ahead to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Cyprus' lyrical duelists spit fierce rhymes as they battle it out to the licks of a fiddleNew Foto - Cyprus' lyrical duelists spit fierce rhymes as they battle it out to the licks of a fiddle

LARNACA, Cyprus (AP) — Lyrical duelists in Cyprus spit rhymes in head-to-head contests, keeping alive a tradition known as "tsiattista" that emerged centuries before the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Konstantinos Christou Grilias and Adamos Peratikos are among a new group of poets in this Mediterranean country who battle it out live on stage to the rhythms of the lute and fiddle. The battles are fierce, but you won't find any Kendrick-Drake style beef. Tsiattista made UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. The similarities with American hip-hop diss songs and battle rap are many: two duelists using their wits and turns of phrase to boast how superior they are, giving opponents a schooling in an onslaught of lyrical beatdowns. It's complete with assertive gestures and the hands-behind-the-back patience of the poet waiting to pounce. "Even if you'd been a paramedic, I'd send you to hospital with a heart attack," Peratikos told one adversary — a line with more snap in the Cypriot Greek dialect, whose syntax is akin to ancient Greek. Grilias dissed his opponent as a lightweight and a laughingstock. The audience of hundreds along a seaside promenade murmured in approval. Tsiattista battles which have been around since at least the end of the 19th century, are undergoing a bit of a revival, thanks to performers like Grilias and Peratikos. "We urge other kids who like it to come along to safeguard this institution," said Peratikos, 41. "The goal isn't about awards, the goal is to keep tradition alive." The 44-year-old Grilias said he's never really delved into the world of Kendrick Lamar or Jay-Z. "Honestly, I've never listened to rappers. They told me that they battle in their own language, in their own way," Grilias said as he prepared for a tsiattista duel at the peak of a festival for the Orthodox Christian Pentecost. "Rappers don't know where Cyprus is," he added. The new group of performers, known as tsiattistaes, started to replace the older generation about 15 years ago at the premier competition in Larnaca during the annual Pentecost festival known as Kataklysmos, said ethnomusicologist Nicoletta Demetriou, who is director of the island nation's Music Archive. The new generation includes women, though few participate because of lingering social exclusion, Demetriou said. The current tsiattista format of a two-verse rhyme with a total of 15 syllables was developed in the late 18th to early 19th century, evolving from the introduction of the rhyming verse to the Greek-speaking world in the 15th and 16th centuries, Demetriou said. It draws on a tradition of poets matching wits from the times of Pericles in ancient Greece. The structure and musical accompaniment are simple, so that the rhymes are clear and understandable for both the audience and the adversary. Contests can address a range of themes, but the underlying premise is to determine who's the best at the diss. "It's usually a fight, meaning 'I'd clobber you, kill you, bury you," Grilias said. "But I believe the public likes more a bit of humor, too." For contestants, it's about who shows up ready, can stay cool and make the fewest mistakes in front of a crowd. "Truth is, you're stressed, you're under pressure," Grilias said, and "the person who can best handle this has the advantage." One useful strategy is guessing how to get into your opponent's way of thinking, predicting possible responses to your lines, Peratikos said. He dismissedAI technologyas incapable of coming up with effective rhymes in the Cypriot Greek dialect. "There are words that we've heard but we don't even know, so there's no way artificial intelligence does," Peratikos said. At the end of a long night of battling, Grilias and Peratikos finished fourth and fifth, respectively. A judging panel composed of men and women determined the winners. The two contestants took their places in stride. "We're all friends, that's what's important," Grilias said.

Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood tie Scottie Scheffler for Travelers leadNew Foto - Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood tie Scottie Scheffler for Travelers lead

Justin Thomas and Englishman Tommy Fleetwood joined Scottie Scheffler atop the Travelers Championship leaderboard on Friday in Cromwell, Conn. Thomas rolled in five birdies in a row and Fleetwood pocketed a pair of eagles on the back nine at TPC River Highlands to rocket up the leaderboard. Thomas posted a 6-under-par 64, tied for the low round of the day, and Fleetwood shot a 65 to reach 9-under 131 for the tournament. Scheffler, the defending champion who held a share of the lead after opening with a 62, managed a 69 that included a water ball and a double bogey at No. 17. The trio was one stroke ahead of Australian Jason Day, who posted his second straight round of 66 to get to 8 under. Austin Eckroat, who was tied with Scheffler through 18 holes, struggled to a 71 Friday to land tied for fifth with Denny McCarthy (64). Thomas was 1 under through his round and coming off a bogey at No. 10 when he caught fire. A 15 1/2-foot birdie at the par-3 11th hole got him going, and he capped the run with a pair of even longer putts: 26 feet at No. 14 and 27 feet at No. 15. "I didn't feel like I drove it very well," Thomas said. "I kept it in play and kept it in front of me, which is a big part of it, but I just kind of kept it out of trouble. I would much prefer to be hitting the middle of the club face and doing that, but it's still a good sign on a really windy day like this." Fleetwood's eagles came at the par-5 13th and par-4 15th holes. After reaching the green in two and making a 10-footer at the 13th, he pitched in from in front of the green at No. 15 -- which was playing just 299 yards -- and holed out from 90 feet. "(At) 15, the tee shot there was unbelievable looking at it, and it pitched right into that upslope, and I was a bit gutted where it pitched and then chipped it in," Fleetwood said. "Would have been happy walking off -- obviously walking off with two birdies, but two eagles was a big bonus." Scheffler and the rest of the field battled unusual wind gusts that threw them off. "I would use 'robotic' as maybe the word. It's not as robotic," the World No. 1 said. "I think when you're playing under no conditions or very light winds, I think you can hit a similar flight on every single shot and it would be fine. On days like today you have to work the ball both ways. You have to hit low shots, hit high shots. You're always playing a different type of shot, especially in conditions like this." He was in agreement with Day, who had a busy day with seven birdies and three bogeys. "You wake up, and I knew I had an afternoon tee time, and I'm sitting in my bus and the bus is moving," Day said. "I'm like, 'That's pretty strong wind to move the bus.' "Then you get out here and I decide to check the weather, and it was 15 to 20 miles an hour but gusts of 40. That's usually one where you're like -- you're looking forward to it, but you also know it's going to be a grind through the day." U.S. Ryder Cup captain and 2023 Travelers winner Keegan Bradley posted an even-par 70 and is tied at 6 under with Canada's Nick Taylor (68). Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy had five bogeys against four birdies for a 1-over 71, dropping to 5 under with Eric Cole (67), Patrick Cantlay (68) and Harris English (68). The $20 million signature event does not include a 36-hole cut. Ireland's Shane Lowry (73 on Friday; 5 over for the tournament), Rickie Fowler (77; 7 over) and Tony Finau (74; 7 over) all continued to struggle with their respective games. --Field Level Media
