LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani pitched one hitless inning in his second mound start of the season before hitting a three-run triple and a two-run homer, and Max Muncy had a grand slam and a three-run homer in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 13-7 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday. Ohtanirecorded two strikeouts while throwing 18 pitches, allowing his only baserunner on an error when Mookie Betts dropped a popup in the sun. The two-way superstar is easing his way back onto the mound with short starts, and he was more effective against the Nats than in his season mound debut last Monday against San Diego. Ohtani then had his most productive offensive game in some time, delivering two huge hits in the late innings. He cleared the bases with a drive into the right field corner during the Dodgers' seven-run seventh, and he added his 26th homer in the eighth to put LA up 13-3. The defending World Series champions finished their 10-game homestand at 7-3, taking two of three from Washington. The Dodgers trailed 3-0 in the sixth when Muncy delivered his seventh career grand slam — also his 200th homer. Muncy then hit a three-run shot off Cole Henry in the seventh for his 18th multi-homer game. Nathaniel Lowe hit a three-run homer and Michael Soroka struck out a career-high 10 while pitching two-hit ball into the sixth inning for the Nats, who have lost six straight series while going 4-16 in June. Ben Casparius (6-1) allowed three runs and five hits over five innings after coming on behind Ohtani. Soroka retired 14 of the Dodgers' first 15 batters, issuing just one walk until Hyeseong Kim roped a long double to left with two outs in the fifth. The Dodgers finally responded in the sixth, chasing Soroka right before Muncy's slam off José A. Ferrer (2-3). Key moment Ferrer stopped the game with a 2-1 count on Muncy to complain about the mound conditions, compelling the grounds crew to come onto the field for significant work. Muncy blasted Ferrer's second pitch after the delay deep into the left field bleachers. Key stat Muncy tied his career high with seven RBIs. The slugger has done it three times, most recently May 31 against the Yankees. Up next Washington's Mitchell Parker (4-8, 4.59 ERA) takes the mound Monday in San Diego. The Dodgers have a day off before a probable bullpen game at Colorado on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/MLB

MVP. Finals MVP. Scoring champ. NBA champ. OKC's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander now holds all those titlesNew Foto - MVP. Finals MVP. Scoring champ. NBA champ. OKC's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander now holds all those titles

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — He's the most valuable player. The scoring champion. And now, an NBA champion along with NBA Finals MVP. All in one season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has entered one of the game's most elite clubs. The 26-year-old Canadian is atop the basketball world now in almost every way imaginable. Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder captured the NBA title on Sunday night, beating the Indiana Pacers 103-91to win the finals in a seven-game thriller. He becomes the fourth player in NBA history to win MVP, Finals MVP, a scoring title and play for a champion in the same season. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it once, Michael Jordan then did it four times, and Shaquille O'Neal was the last entrant into that fraternity — until now. "A lot of hard work, a lot of hours in the gym," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "This isn't just a win for me. This is a win for my family. This is a win for my friends. This is a win for everybody that was in my corner growing up. This is a win for the fans, the best fans in the world." The title caps a season where the Thunder won 84 games, tied for the third most by any team in any season in NBA history. Gilgeous-Alexander finished the season with 64 games of at least 30 points. The only other players to score 30 points that many times in a season: Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry, Elgin Baylor, Bob McAdoo, James Harden, Jordan and Abdul-Jabbar. It is amazing company. With due respect to those legends, Gilgeous-Alexander doesn't care. The Thunder are NBA champions. That's more than enough for him. "Focusing on just being the best version of myself for this basketball team, for whatever it takes, for however many games it is, however many possessions is needed, however many moments," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "Ultimately, I'm just trying to stay in the moment. I think that's what's gotten me here. That's what has helped me achieve the MVP award, achieve all the things I've achieved. It's helped this team win basketball games." This was not a sneak attack up the ladder of superstardom. Gilgeous-Alexander has been climbing those rungs for years. He's one of only two players — Giannis Antetokounmpo is the other — to average at least 30 points per game in each of the last three seasons. He led Canada to a bronze medal (over the United States, no less) at the World Cup in 2023, been an All-Star and first-team All-NBA pick for three years running, played in his first Olympics last year, and just finished a season where he posted career bests in points and assists per game. He scored 3,172 points this season, including playoffs, the ninth-most by any player in NBA history. Oh, and he's a champion now. "He's getting better every year in just about everything," Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. "I think he's really improved as a playmaker. … And then he's an unbelievable scorer, and incredibly efficient. We lean into that. He leans into that. He's learned when teams load up on him and they overcommit, to get off it early, and I think that's reflected in the way we've played offense throughout the course of the season." Opponents have no choice but to marvel at how Gilgeous-Alexander does what he does. He's not a high-flying artist like Jordan, not an unstoppable force of power like LeBron James, not a 3-point dazzler like Stephen Curry. He looks like he's playing at his own pace much of time, largely because defenses have few ways to slow him down or speed him up. "Shai, he's so good," Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton — whosuffered a serious lower leg injurythat knocked him out of Game 7 in the first quarter — said during the series. "He's so slippery in between those gaps. He splits screens, like, I don't know how he's doing that. … He's a really tough cover." Gilgeous-Alexander is the face of basketball in Oklahoma City, is rapidly becoming one of the faces of the NBA — his jersey is now one of the highest-selling — and it's no secret that he is the icon for fans in Canada now. It used to be Steve Nash, the first Canadian to win NBA MVP. Now, Nash has help. "You can only imagine and get excited about all the kids around the world, but in particular Canadians that will be affected so positively, whether they're basketball players or not, by the way he carries himself, by the way he executes and commits to his profession," Nash said. "It's remarkable and he's an amazing example for everybody out there, not just kids." There's no question Nash had some impact on Gilgeous-Alexander's rise in the game. Another great who did: Kobe Bryant. There are parallels: similar body types, even similar ways they answer questions. Bryant famously said "job's not finished" when asked about his Lakers getting within two wins of a title one year; Gilgeous-Alexander had a similar moment after the Thunder got to three wins in this series, saying "we haven't done anything." They have now. "He is probably my favorite player of all time," Gilgeous-Alexander said of Bryant. "Never got the chance to meet him. With me, with kids all across the world, his influence has gone through the roof. He'll be remembered forever because of the competitor and the basketball player he was. Yeah, I'm hopefully somewhere close to that as a basketball player one day." He's not there yet. But Gilgeous-Alexander got one day closer Sunday, when he reached basketball's mountaintop for the first time. "It means everything," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "We rose to the moment. And here we are." ___ AP NBA:https://apnews.com/hub/NBA

"He called[David] Letterman, and he called the president of CBS and said, 'Please, can we change the show name?' " he remembered. "So the president said, 'Look, if it's a hit, we'll change it.' Keegan Bradley stuns Tommy Fleetwood on No. 18 to win TravelersNew Foto - Keegan Bradley stuns Tommy Fleetwood on No. 18 to win Travelers

Keegan Bradley created a level of insanity as the Travelers Championship wound down. And better yet for the U.S. Ryder Cup captain, he knew how to handle it. Bradley birdied the final hole and catapulted past England's Tommy Fleetwood to win the tournament in a stunning conclusion Sunday in Cromwell, Conn. Bradley shot 2-under-par 68 for a four-round total of 15-under 265 to win by one stroke over Fleetwood (72) and Russell Henley (69). "It was insane, the crowd and the atmosphere and the scene there," Bradley said. "And I just did a great job of like staying present, because that could have got me out of my routine, out of what I was doing, but I did a good job of staying in my little zone." Bradley, a native of New England and playing in what he considers his home tournament, thrilled the huge crowd on the final hole at TPC River Highlands by sinking a 6-foot birdie putt. Fleetwood, who left an approach shot short, had just missed a par putt from inside 7 feet for a two-shot swing. "Still feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a playoff," Fleetwood said. "So, yeah, it's a crappy way to finish." Fleetwood, who began the day with a three-shot lead, appeared to have recovered after a ragged opening stretch. Instead, Bradley won for the first time since last year's BMW Championship. Bradley also was the Travelers Championship winner in 2023. After the final putt dropped, Bradley chest-bumped his caddie and the celebration was underway. It was quite a scene. "He just plays with so much passion," Henley said of Bradley. "He wants it, he wants to compete, he wants to win. It just means so much to him. That was a really, really cool moment on 18." And now Bradley has played his way into contention for an automatic spot on the Ryder Cup team. "I'm going to do whatever I think is best for the team," he said. "Whether that's me on the team -- this certainly changes a lot of things. I was never going to play on the team unless I had won a tournament, and so that's changed, but we'll see." Fleetwood has won seven times on the DP World Tour, but he's still without a victory in 159 PGA Tour events. Harris English (65) and Australia's Jason Day (68) tied for fourth place at 13 under. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the tournament's defending champion, recovered from Saturday's 72 to shoot 65 and finish in a sixth-place tie at 12 under with Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who also posted 65. Fleetwood recorded three bogeys and a birdie across the first four holes Sunday after registering only one bogey during the entire first three rounds. He got some juice from a birdie putt of about 14 1/2 feet on the par-3 11th hole. Fleetwood and Bradley were all even through nine holes, with Bradley's 64-foot putt on the ninth giving him a birdie and seemingly all sorts of momentum as the gallery roared its approval. "I felt like I was just too far behind the whole day," Bradley said. "I was just chasing, chasing." When Bradley rolled in a 37-foot birdie putt on No. 15, he moved to two strokes back. The margin was one shot when Fleetwood bogeyed No. 16, and it stayed that way until No. 18. Fleetwood praised the crowd, while acknowledging Bradley's overwhelming support. "Obviously, Keegan's going to get the majority of support," Fleetwood said. "I felt like the crowd was great all week. ... I enjoyed playing. It was a great atmosphere to play in. It really was. I enjoyed that side of it." Henley chipped in for birdie at the final hole. "I wasn't doing a good job of getting it close enough to the hole to make a ton of birdies and when I did hit it to 10 or 15 feet I just didn't convert as much as I would like," Henley said. "But I feel like I hung in there and did a lot of really good things." Scheffler's 268 marked 10 more strokes than his winning 2024 total. "I did some good things this week," Scheffler said. "I think obviously I was looking for a little bit more, but overall not a bad week. If I have a different day (Saturday) I think it's a different story, but can't be perfect every day." McIlroy said he'll head home to Europe with something to build on. "Definitely saw some positive signs in the game overall, which was really good to see," McIlroy said. Justin Thomas, who was a 36-hole co-leader, had 67 in the final round to post 9 under for the tournament, tying for ninth place. Norway's Viktor Hovland, who shot 63 on Saturday and was 10 strokes back through three rounds, withdrew from the final round because of a neck ailment. During the round, Germany's Matti Schmid dropped out because of illness. Hovland said he felt fine warming up on the range until his session was nearly finished and the discomfort surfaced. "I don't know exactly what happened, but there's something that happened and just couldn't move," Hovland said. --Field Level Media

Kevin Schnall blasts CWS ejection: 'I shouldn't get shooed by another grown man'New Foto - Kevin Schnall blasts CWS ejection: 'I shouldn't get shooed by another grown man'

Coastal Carolina baseball fell to LSUin Game 2 of the College World Series championship series on June 22, and coach Kevin Schnall wasn't able to be with his team as the Chanticleers' season ended. Schnall was ejectedin the bottom of the first inning for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Angel Campos, who threw out Schnall and Coastal Carolina first base coach Matt Schilling. It was a controversial call, not only because it came in a pivotal game during the championship series, but also because Schnall and Schilling both would have been unavailable for a winner-take-all Game 3 had the Chanticleers won Game 2. Schnall blasted the ejection in a postgame news conference following Coastal Carolina's 5-3 loss. REQUIRED READING:LSU wins NCAA baseball title: Winners and losers from College World Series "You missed three pitches" does not qualify as one of those combinations. If this is all it took for Kevin Schnall to get ejected, that is absurd.pic.twitter.com/qKFIjhoSYh — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan)June 22, 2025 "There's 25,000 people there and I vaguely hear a warning issued,"Schnall saidwhen asked whether he had been issued a warning before his ejection. "As the head coach, I was an assistant for 24 years. As an assistant you're almost treated like a second-grade, second-level citizen and you can't say a word. Now as a head coach, I think it is your right to get an explanation of why we got warned. And I'm 48 years old. I shouldn't get shooed by another grown man. So, when I come out to ask what the warning is, a grown man shooed me. "So, at that point I can now hear him say it was a warning issued for balls and strikes. And at that point I said, 'Because you missed three.' At that point, ejected. If that warrants an ejection, I'm the first one to stand here like a man and apologize." Schnall, a first-year head coach, was an assistant at Coastal Carolina under Gary Gilmore from 2001-12 and again from 2016-24 before being promoted. REQUIRED READING:Why was Coastal Carolina's Kevin Schnall tossed in College World Series final game? The veteran college baseball coach also shared his viewpoint on what transpired after he was ejected: As Schnall approached home plate umpire Angel Campos, first base umpire Casey Moser came over and tripped as he aimed to get in the middle of Schnall and Campos' exchange. "Two words that define are program are, 'Own it.' And what does that mean?" Schnall said. "It means you have to own everything that you do, without blame, without defending yourself, without excuses. If you guys watch the video, there was a guy that came in extremely aggressively, tripped over Campos' foot, embarrassed in front of 25,000, immediately goes 'two-game suspension,' and said 'bumping the umpire.' Immediately does that. "There was no bump. He was embarrassed. I shouldn't be held accountable for a grown man's athleticism. They'll retract it, though. Because now it's excessive and the reason why it was excessive is because I was trying to say, 'I didn't bump him.'" It's uncertain how Schnall's presence in the dugout would've impacted Coastal Carolina's result in Game 2, if at all. Associate head coach Chad Oxendine, who spent the previous three seasons as head coach for Longwood baseball, ultimately finished the game as acting head coach. But the decision to eject the Chanticleers' coach is one that'll certainly be remembered. "It is what it is, but if that warranted an ejection, man, (there'd) be a lot of ejections," Schnall said. "As an umpire, I feel like it's your job to manage the game, the national championship game, with some poise, some calmness and a little bit of tolerance." Shohei Ohtani records first 2 strikeouts as a Dodger without allowing a run or hit in 2nd abbreviated startNew Foto - Shohei Ohtani records first 2 strikeouts as a Dodger without allowing a run or hit in 2nd abbreviated start

Shohei Ohtani returned to the mound Sunday for his second start as a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a strong effort in another abbreviated outing for the two-way star, who's working his way back to a normal pitching load after undergoing UCL surgery in 2023. Ohtani made his pitching debut for the Dodgerson Monday with a one-inning start that resulted in two hits and one earned run in a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres. He improved on Sunday against the Washington Nationals in a gamethe Dodgers won 13-7. Sunday's outing was also limited to a single inning. But Ohtani didn't allow a hit while recording his first two strikeouts in a Dodgers uniform. The inning got off to an efficient start for Ohtani, who induced a first-pitch groundout from leadoff hitter C.J. Abrams. Projected All-Star James Wood made Ohtani work as the second batter of the day and reached first on an error by outfielder Mookie Betts on a 2-2 count. Wood was the only batter to reach base against Ohtani. Ohtani worked No. 3 hitter Luis Garcia Jr. to a 2-2 count. He then induced a swinging strike three on a sweeper that sunk low and inside. Garcia attempted to check his swing but failed and was called out. He threw a splitter in the dirt that got away from catcher Dalton Rushing, allowing Wood to advance to second. But Wood would get no farther. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat with a 2-2 count, Ohtani threw an 88 mph cutter that swept across the plate low and outside. Lowe swung and missed and went back to the dugout with an inning-ending strikeout, Ohtani's second of the day. Ohtani threw 18 pitches, including 12 strikes, with two swinging strikeouts and no walks, hits or runs allowed. His fastball topped out at 99 mph, and he threw an arsenal of pitches that also featured his cutter, sweeper and splitter. It was an encouraging outing for the three-time All-Star pitcher, who hasn't handled a full load on the mound since Aug. 23, 2023, when he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels. Since that start for the Angels, Ohtani underwent surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow for the second time. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. Ohtani joined the Dodgers as a free agent the following offseason and had an MVP year at the plate during a World Series championship campaign for the Dodgers. He returned to the mound last week after a layoff from pitching of almost two years. The Dodgers have eased Ohtani back with bullpen and batting-practice sessions. They're now limiting his time on the mound as a starter, with the hope of increasing his workload as the season progresses and they seek a second consecutive World Series title. Through two outings, the pitching comeback for Ohtani appears to be going to plan.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Two-way college star and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, the second overall pick in April's NFL draft, signed a four-year, $46.6 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The deal includes a $30.5 million signing bonus. Hunter had been one of three unsigned first-round picks, including Cincinnati edge rusher Shemar Stewart (17th overall) and Denver cornerback Jahdae Barron (20th). Under the NFL's slotting system, Hunter is expected to get $840,000 in base salary as a rookie, with his contract rising to $2.96 million in Year 2, $5.08 million in his third season and $7.20 million in his fourth. Like all first-round draft picks, Hunter's deal includes a club option for a fifth year. The Jaguars traded up three spots to select the former Colorado standout in the draft and are counting on him to help change the fate of the floundering franchise. And they expect him to play both receiver and cornerback as he did at Colorado and Jackson State. Hunter caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns last season for the Buffaloes and notched 35 tackles, 11 pass breakups, eight forced incompletions and four interceptions while allowing just one touchdown. The Jaguars traded up three spots to draft Hunter and intend to use him on both sides of the ball this fall, planning to have him working as a slot receiver on offense and as a cornerback in certain packages on defense. It's familiar territory for someone who played more snaps (1,461) than anyone else in college football in 2024. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
