She continued, "But I did notice him, andI instantly felt an emotional connection." After Bach gave Turner a lift, the couple began what would become a long and beautiful courtship, lasting 27 years before they tied the knot in 2013. Why Cooper Flagg is one of the NBA's most intriguing prospects of the last 15 yearsNew Foto - Why Cooper Flagg is one of the NBA's most intriguing prospects of the last 15 years

For about two years, Cooper Flagg has been expected to be the top pick in the 2025 NBA draft. That will finally become a reality Wednesday, as the Dallas Mavericks are set to select the former Duke star first overall. The biggest question during draft week, then, is not who will go No. 1, but what kind of player the Mavericks will be getting in one of the most intriguing prospects of the last 15 years. "He trends like LeBron James," said Brian Scalabrine, who played 11 years in the NBA and has been training with Flagg since he was in his early teens. "LeBron has a beautiful mind when it comes to this game. Cooper's brain is right on par with those guys. They just process the game differently." "I really think he's going to be one of those guys who makes people around him better," said Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley, who coached Flagg on the USA Select Team last summer. "People might get caught up in his numbers. But I think he's going to be one of those pluses that's always on the floor, all the while finding his range and his space." Grant Hill, the managing director of USA Basketball, said Flagg's best attribute is his versatility. "He can read the game and figure out what's needed from him for his team to have success," Hill told NBC News. "He assesses what's happening in the game and has the talent and ability to provide what's needed, and that's unique particularly for someone so young." Flagg, 18, grew up in Newport, Maine, before attending his final two years of high school at Montverde Academy in central Florida. (Montverde is less of a school and more of an incubator for future professional athletes.) After his sophomore year, Flagg reclassified from the high school class of 2025 to 2024, immediately becoming a senior and putting himself on track to enter the NBA this summer. His prowess as a player, however, dates back much further. As with many legends, Flagg's earliest memories of competition are from his driveway, where he would often play his twin brother, Ace, in a game of one-on-one. "That's where it started, for sure, scrapping it out in the driveway" Flagg told NBC News at an AT&T Flaggship Experience event. "You never want to lose to your brothers." Ace Flagg said the battles were incredibly physical. "Without fail, any time we played, someone's running inside to Mom crying because someone hit them," he said. By the time he was 13, Cooper's parents were so invested in his basketball career that he had a trainer, Matt Mackenzie. It was Mackenzie who put him on Scalabrine's radar. "Matt calls me up and says, 'I got this 13-year-old kid who plays against University of Maine kids. The first 15 minutes he's feeling it out, and the last 15 minutes he's the best player on the floor,'" Scalabrine said. "In this situation, in my mind, I love Matt, but you're nuts." Scalabrine was skeptical, so he invited Flagg to participate in a pickup game he organizes in Boston, which Scalabrine said includes former pros and college players. "And sure enough, the guy walks out of the SUV, throws on his knee braces and dominates the run," Scalabrine said. "The level of my gym went to a 100x than it normally would. Right then and there, I told his parents he would go to the NBA." Flagg continued to shine no matter what court he was playing on. In his first season at Nokomis Regional High School, he became the first freshman to win Maine's Gatorade Player of the Year award. He also put up dominant performances for his AAU team. At Nike's Peach Jam tournament in the summer of 2023, going head-to-head against other top prospects, Flagg averaged 25.4 points, 13 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 6.9 blocks per game. At Duke, he led the Blue Devils to their first Final Four in three years, putting up 21 points. 7.6 rebounds and 5 assists a night in the NCAA Tournament. His most impressive performance may have come last summer, however, before he had even played a college game. That's when Flagg was invited to help sharpen the skills of Team USA ahead of the Paris Olympics, scrimmaging against the likes of LeBron James and Stephen Curry as part of the Select Team. Hill, a Duke alum, first picked up on the Flagg hype watching his high school games. Hill's friend had a son on Montverde's team, and Hill noticed Flagg's motor and competitive drive from when he was a sophomore. Hill wasn't necessarily evaluating Flagg at the time, but when USA Basketball scouts recommended Flagg for the Select Team, he figured it was worth a shot. "Let's bring him in and see how he does," Hill said of the thinking behind bringing Flagg to the pre-Paris camp. "He may be one of those names in 2027 that might be under consideration for the World Cup team or down the road. We weren't totally sure how he would do or how he would adjust. He made us look really good." Mosley, Flagg's coach at the camp, marveled at the 17-year-old's curious and inquisitive nature. He admits it's "coach talk" to say so, but Mosley said what impressed him most about Flagg was how much care he put into every part of practice. He specifically recalled a defensive drill in practice during which Flagg pulled a teammate, Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs, aside for extra insight. "He was just asking a ton of questions. Defensively, that stood out," Mosley said, adding that he believes Flagg will be a better defender in the NBA than people expect. "Offensively, he was always trying to make the right play at the right time. You could see how his brain was clicking on making different reads based on where people were on the floor." Clips of Flagg's performance went viral. He ran pick-and-rolls with Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum as his primary defender. He drove to the hoop against James. He hit a turnaround fadeaway over Celtics guard Jrue Holiday and a pull-up 3 in the face of Mavericks big man Anthony Davis. Even before his first college game, Flagg looked comfortable on the floor against the elite of the NBA's elite. Mosley said what stood out about Flagg was "his fearlessness to not worry about the name on the jersey and just recognize he's a good enough basketball player to be on the floor with these guys." Hill said: "He didn't back down. He felt like he belonged. He showed everybody why there had been so much talk about him. Everybody who was there in the gym — including those that were on the court— I think they walked away with a lot of respect for him and his game." In every basketball environment he's been thrown into, Flagg has succeeded. Now all that's left for him is the NBA, where he will take his versatility and decision-making to a veteran-laden Mavericks team that needs the exact type of player Flagg is on the wing. "I think what he's demonstrated is, even with all the accolades and all the attention, that his desire to work and get better and improve is through the roof," Hill said. "What you'll see in the first month, the first year, is only the beginning of what his potential is."

LONDON (AP) — Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is to help design a statue of himself to mark the grass-court tournament's 150th anniversary in 2027. Wimbledon organizers said Tuesday they aim to unveil the statue of the British tennis great during the 2027 edition. "He's got to rightly be very involved in that and him and his team will be," the All England Club chairwoman Debbie Jevans said. Murray ended Britain's 77-year wait for a home champion in men's singles in 2013 when he beat Novak Djokovic in the final. The Scotsman won a second title — and his third Grand Slam singles title overall — in the 2016 final against Milos Raonic. An inspiration for the statue project is the wayRafael Nadal was honored, with Murray in attendance, this month at Roland Garros where he won 14 French Open titles. "We looked at Rafa Nadal having that sort of plaque unveiled to him at Roland-Garros which was all very special," Jevans said. "But we thought, what do we want for Andy?" A bronze statue of Fred Perry, the previous British men's champion before Murray in 1936, was put up at Wimbledon in 1984 marking 50 years after his first singles title at the tournament. The procedural handoff comes after Homeland Security agent Joseph Cerciello concluded his testimony on June 23, with the federal official reviewing an extensive paper trail of hotel bills, flight details and other purchases relating to the elaborate sexual performances Combs has been accused of orchestrating. Prosecutors continued to paint a picture of Combs and his employees being personally involved withorganizing "freak offs,"working with escorts, Combs' partners and others. That included making travel arrangements for Combs' former girlfriend"Jane,"as well as male escorts and other entertainers. Combs, 55, wasarrested in Septemberand charged with sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. He haspleaded not guilty. As Cerciello continued his testimony on June 23, the jury was shown several videos of Combs' ex-girlfriendJane. Lead prosecutor Maurene Comey called the videos "explicit" several times. The jury watched the footage for about 20 minutes while wearing headphones. The monitors that had been shown to the courtroom gallery were turned off, and reporters couldn't see the videos. Cerciello said all the videos featured Jane and sex workerSly Williams. Combs was also seen in some of the footage. The agent mainly looked up and around the courtroom gallery rather than at his screen while the videos played. "I really had a great night," Jane said in one message. The move comes as Combs' lawyers have argued that many of the rapper's partners were willing participants in his alleged sexual performances. Geragos also played sealed videos for Cerciello and the jury, but there was no audio or visuals for the courtroom. At the end of the June 23 hearing,Geragostold Judge Arun Subramanian that the rapper's legal team had an hour and 15 minutes left of questioning for cross-examination. Regarding jury deliberations, a meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, in which prosecutors and Combs' attorneys will talk about jury instructions with Subramanian. Jurors won't be present for the discussion. Closing arguments are expected to begin Thursday, June 26 and stretch into the following day. Geragos said both prosecutors and defense lawyers estimate their arguments will last four hours each. During aSeptember 2024 press conference, U.S. attorney Damian Williams detailed the paraphernalia discovered during the federal raids of Combs' homes. The items included multiple AR-15 guns, large-capacity magazines, "evidence" of Combs' alleged sex crimes and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant. According to Combs' original indictment, the baby oil bottles were used during the hip-hop mogul's alleged "freak-off" parties, which were described as "elaborate and produced sex performances" that involved sex workers. Combs and his employees conducted "freak offs" by booking hotel rooms and stocking them with supplies such as baby oil, lube, extra bedsheets and lighting, per the indictment. The rapper allegedly "arranged, directed" and "masturbated" during these sometimes dayslong "performances," and drugs were reportedly distributed to victims, in part, to keep them "obedient and compliant." In 2024, Forbes magazine estimated Combs'net worth at $400 million— a significant drop from its 2019 figure of$740 million. Both Combs and his team later claimed he was a billionaire, Forbes said, despite offering no documentation to back up the claim. According to publicly available documents and news reports, Combs' most valuable personal possession is likely his 17,000-square-foot, 10-bedroom mansion, appraised at more than $61 million, in the affluent Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles. It was raided as part of a criminal probe and listed for sale in September 2024. Combs is facing federal sex-crimes and trafficking charges in a sprawling case that has eroded his status as a power player and kingmaker in the entertainment industry. He was arrested inSeptember 2024and later charged with racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. The rapper has pleaded not guilty to the five counts against him. Racketeering is the participation in an illegal scheme under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Statute, or RICO, as a way for the U.S. government to prosecute organizations that contribute to criminal activity. Using RICO law, which is typically aimed attargeting multi-person criminal organizations, prosecutors allegethat Combs coerced victims, some of whom they say were sex workers, through intimidation and narcotics to participate in"freak offs"— sometimes dayslong sex performances that federal prosecutors allege they have on video. The trial will not be televised, as cameras are typically not allowed in federal criminal trial proceedings. How will Tyrese Haliburton look post-Achilles recovery? Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Kobe Bryant cases may provide some insightNew Foto - How will Tyrese Haliburton look post-Achilles recovery? Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Kobe Bryant cases may provide some insight

Tyrese Haliburton joined an unfortunate list of NBA stars to have suffered one of the worst injuries in sports Sunday night witha torn Achilles tendon that required surgery Monday. All things considered, it's one of the most devastating injuries in basketball history. It shifted the trajectory of an NBA Finals Game 7, cut short one of the great individual postseason runs ever seen at its peak and put an immediate damper on the 2025-26 hopes of an emerging Pacers team that had just risen the ranks of Eastern Conference powers. For Haliburton, the injury stunts the prime of his All-Star career just as he entered it at 25 years old. The good news for Haliburton is there's recent precedent for All-Star-level players to recover and resume their careers at a high level. The focus now shifts to Haliburton's recovery and the impact of the injury on his long-term prospects. It's a reality thatfellow All-Stars Damian LillardandJayson Tatum have faced for weekssince sustaining Achilles tears of their own in the postseason. Fortunately for all three, Achilles tears aren't necessarily the career-enders that they were for many in the past as medical advancements in treatment and recovery have improved the outlook of players who sustain them. But they retain the downside of altering the trajectory of basketball careers. There's no telling how any of the three will look post-recovery. The best we can do is look at similar injuries to high-level players in recent basketball history. The most notable cases to examine are Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. Kobe Bryant tore his Achilles tendon in April 2013 at the end of the NBA regular season. As a 34-year-old guard at the time of his injury, Bryant's case is more relevant to Lillard's than Haliburton's or Tatum's. Bryant was on the backend of his prime as one of the game's most dominant offensive forces at the time of his injury. He played 78 games in the 2012-13 season prior to his injury and averaged 27.3 points, six assists and 5.6 rebounds per game while exceeding his career shooting percentage (44.7%) with a 46.3% success rate from the field. This was late-stage Kobe. But it was still prime Kobe. He was named first-team All-NBA and finished fifth in MVP voting that season. He was never the same again. Bryant returned to the court the following December, only tosuffer a knee fracture in the same left legthat sustained the Achilles tear six games into his comeback. He missed the rest of the 2013-14 season. He went on to play two more NBA seasons and remained a potent scorer by normal NBA standards. But he was a shell of his former self. Bryant averaged 22.3 points in 35 games in 2014-15, but shot 37.3% from the floor. A rotator cuff injury ended his season in January. In his final season in 2015-16, Bryant averaged 17.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 35.8% from the field. The combination of age (37) and compounding injuries ultimately compelled the uber-competitive Bryant to hang it up. Thompson's Achilles tendon injury may be the most unique and difficult of the three to compare.Thompson sustained his injuryin November 2021 in a Golden State Warriors scrimmage during his comeback from an ACL tear. Thompson previously tore the ACL in his left knee during the 2019 NBA Finals between the Warriors and Raptors. He missed the entire 2019-20 season with that injury, then tore the Achilles tendon in his right leg while ramping up for his return. The Achilles tear cost him a second consecutive full season in 2020-21. He returned for the 2021-22 season at 31 years old and has remarkably remained a productive NBA player since. But he's not been the same. Thompson was one of basketball's most lethal and efficient shooters in his pre-injury prime. Since his return, his season-long shooting percentages have ranged from 41.2% to 43.6%, well below his prime shooting rates that hovered between 46.3% and 47%. Thompson was also a high-level perimeter defender pre-injury who made an All-Defensive team and earned Defensive Player of the Year votes in two separate seasons. He's no longer capable of that level of defense and hasn't made an All-Star team post-injury after making five All-Star teams and two All-NBA teams prior to his injuries. But he's remained a high-level scorer and one of the league's best 3-point shooters. He averaged 20-plus points in each of his first two seasons back and has shot no worse than 38.5% from 3 in his four seasons since. Some projected the combination of injuries to end Thompson's career, and they've done anything but. For many, Durant's was the first name to come to mind whenHaliburton collapsed to the floorSunday night. We'd seen this before. Like Haliburton, Durant suffered a strained calf during the playoffs in 2019. Like Haliburton, Durant opted to play through the injury in the NBA Finals with an NBA title at stake. Like Haliburton, Durantcollapsed in the NBA Finals with an Achilles tearthat threatened to alter the trajectory of his career. And perhaps even more so than Thompson's, Durant's case provides reason for optimism. Durant was a pending free agent at the time of his injury and didn't play during the 2019-20 season after signing with the Brooklyn Nets. He returned to the court with the Nets for the 2020-21 season at 32 years old. And it's difficult to argue that Durant's missed a beat since. Durant's been an All-Star in each of his five seasons since his recovery. He's made two All-NBA teams and has twice finished in the top 10 in MVP voting. He hasn't averaged fewer than 26.6 points per game or shot worse than 51.8% from the field or 38.3% from 3 in any of those five seasons. In short, he's remained in large part what he always was — one of the game's all-time elite offensive weapons. That he's managed to do so on a 6-11 frame on the other side of a significant leg injury in his 30s is nothing short of remarkable. No two Achilles tears or NBA bodies are the same. Projecting just how Haliburton, Tatum and Lillard will respond post-recovery is guesswork that considers multiple factors including age, playing style and body type. At 34 years old, Lillard's recovery projects to look quite different than Haliburton's at 25. Tatum is closer in time on his basketball journey to Haliburton at 27. But he's a 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward. Haliburton's a 6-foot-5, 185-pound guard. Their positions and playing styles put unique stressors on their Achilles tendons, and their recoveries should not be expected to look the same. Perhaps the biggest lesson from looking at the past is that none of them should.

Almost two months after his knee injury, LeBron James is back on the court. The Los Angeles Lakers star shared a video of a workout in New York on Instagram on Monday, which came roughly eight weeks after he sustained an MCL injury in the playoffs. View this post on Instagram A post shared by šŸ‘‘ (@kingjames) "Obviously not where I wanna be ultimately but off to a good start," he wrote, in part. "Damn what a GREAT FEELING!!" James went down in the Lakers' elimination lossto the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs after he collided with Donte DiVincenzo. James briefly left the game, but returned to finish it out. TheLakers ended up losing 103-96. James averaged 24.4 points and 8.2 assists in 70 games last season with the Lakers while earning his 21st All-Star nod. The Lakers, however, fell in the opening round of the playoffs for a second straight season. James has yet to comment on his plans for next season, though many expect that he'll opt-in to a $52.2 million player option and return to the Lakers. That would mark his 23rd season in the league. His deadline to pick up that option is June 29. While Monday's video doesn't confirm that by any means, at least playing again in some form doesn't hurt. "At this point of my career, you think about when the end is. That's human nature," Jamessaid after the Lakers' loss. "You think, is it this year? Or next year? Those thoughts always creep into your mind at this point of the journey. But I have not given it a specific timetable, date. I'm seeing how my body and family reacts too."
