In stunning ruling, arbitrator finds NFL encouraged collusionNew Foto - In stunning ruling, arbitrator finds NFL encouraged collusion

A powerful NFL executive group, with commissioner Roger Goodell's approval, encouraged teams to collude in the name of decreasing guaranteed dollars in veteran contracts, according to a report made by an independent arbitrator andunveiled Tuesday by "Pablo Torre Finds Out." The arbitrator, Christopher Droney, dismissed the arbitration of the NFL Players' Association "in its entirety" earlier this year. But Droney noted that the NFL Management Council – which negotiates with the players' union and other entities on behalf of the 32 owners – "encouraged 32 member Clubs of the NFL to reduce guarantees in future contracts with players at the March 2022 annual meeting." The clubs, however, did not engage in collusive conduct, the report found. Both the NFL and NFLPA declined to comment when reached Tuesday by USA TODAY Sports. The ruling had been kept a secret until Torre published his findings on June 24. The March 2022 meeting at the center of the arbitration claim took place not long after theCleveland Brownstraded for and signed quarterbackDeshaun Watsonto a fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million over five years. According to the report, eight owners, Goodell, high-profile player agents,Russell WilsonandLamar Jacksontestified at a hearing held by Droney over 10 days in New York last summer. The NFLPA initially brought the case under former executive director DeMaurice Smith, who was replaced by Lloyd Howell in 2023. The union alleged a high-ranking league executive askedNew England Patriotsowner Robert Kraft to tell fellow owners to not negotiate with large, fully guaranteed contracts. Both Goodell and Kraft denied this at the hearings, and Droney agreed Goodell did not make the request. In March 2022, per the ruling, the management council presented to the league about the salary cap and a 42% increase in salary guarantees. Kyler Murray (five years, $230.5 million with $160 million guaranteed), Wilson (five years, $245 million with $165 million guaranteed) and Jackson (five years, $260 million with $185 million guaranteed) all signed extensions within the next calendar year. Jackson, who does not have an agent and represents himself, had a contentious negotiation with the Ravens and general manager Eric DeCosta. No team reached out directly to Jackson after the team placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on him. Jackson apparently did not supply a list of teams he'd be interested in playing for because of phone issues. Ranking all 32 NFL teams from most to least entertaining: Who will be most fun in 2025? "Only a couple of teams expressed interest to DeCosta in signing him prior to the Ravens' decision to franchise him," the report said. The document also unveiled text communication between two owners, theCardinals' Michael Bidwill and theLos Angeles Chargers' Dean Spanos. "Your deal helps us for our QB next year," Spanos wrote. "I think many teams will be happy with it once they have a chance to review," Bidwill wrote back. "Cleveland really screwed things up, but I was resolved to keep the guaranteed relatively 'low.'" Droney's role in the arbitration is set by the collective bargaining agreement between the league and union. The same CBA lays out severe penalties for collusion between teams, including the union's right to terminate the CBA in the event of widespread collusion. Proving collusion also requires more than a preponderance of evidence. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Evidence in secret arbitration shows NFL encouraged collusion

NBA Draft 2025: The Nets suddenly hold 5 first-round picks, and all the power, after landing Terance MannNew Foto - NBA Draft 2025: The Nets suddenly hold 5 first-round picks, and all the power, after landing Terance Mann

The Brooklyn Nets may now be in the best position of any team entering theNBA Drafton Wednesday night. The franchise, thanks to a three-team deal with the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday afternoon, now holds five picks in the opening round of the draft. The Nets will have six total, too, including their second-round pick. No other team in the league has more than two in the first round. The Nets acquired Terance Mann and the No. 22 overall pick in the draft from the Atlanta Hawks, which was part of athree-team deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Hawks. The Nets gave up nothing in the deal, and only have to take on Mann's three-year, $47 million deal. That was, remarkably, the fifth first-round pick that the Nets will have. As of Tuesday night, the Nets hold: No. 8No. 19 (from MIL via NYK)No. 22 (from ATL)No. 26 (from NYK)No. 27 (from HOU)No. 36(second round) It's unlikely that the Nets will actually end up using all five of those first-round picks, though it would break an NBA record if they did. The Minnesota Timberwolves made four first-round picks in the 2009 NBA Draft. Still, the Nets are undoubtedly in a great position to get just about whatever they want out of the draft. Outside of holding the rights to the No. 1 overall pick — the Dallas Mavericks are expected to take former Duke star Cooper Flagg in that spot on Wednesday night — the Nets are in the driver's seat. With how the franchise has been the last few years, that's a good thing, too. The Nets went just 26-56 last season and missed the playoffs for a second straight year. Jordi Fernández just wrapped up his first season as the team's head coach, too, though he's the fourth head coach the team has had over the last three seasons. It's still unclear what the Nets will decide to do with all of their draft capital. But, as they have plenty of it, it's sure to be a busy few days in Brooklyn. Whether it can help actually spark a rebuild and bring the franchise back from the bottom of the league, however, remains to be seen.

Michael Ceraadmitted he was once playfully told off byTom Cruiseduring a Tuesday, June 24, installment of theLouis Theroux Podcast. Surprisingly, theArrested Developmentalum, 37, initially forgot they'd even collaborated together. "I haven't worked with Tom Cruise," he said, before correcting himself to add, "Oh, yes. I have. Crazy thing to forget." Cera revealed that he was called out by theTop Gunactor, 62, while talking with a writer on set during the filming of a 2010 MTV Movie Awards clip. "We were just kind of mumbling while they were shooting, but they could hear us," he explained. "It was just, like, 40 feet away." According to Cera, Cruise suddenly said, "Is that Michael Cera talking during a f**king take?'" Later, theAmerican Madeactor made a similar quip to him, but quickly told him that he was just "kidding." Despite calling Cruise "very friendly" otherwise, Cera said it was still obvious the Hollywood legend had been asking him to "shut up" at the time. Cera went on to describe Cruise as "such a leader" throughout filming. "I was there for, like, five minutes," theJunostar recalled. "But what I observed was, he was like the first [assistant director] on the set." This isn't the first time that colleagues have recalled Cruise's intense leadership style. After audio was leaked of Cruise yelling at crew members for allegedly breaking COVID-19 pandemic rules on theset ofMission: Impossible 7, an industry insider toldPeoplethat the actor "is a perfectionist" and that he "wants others to follow suit." "Tom's whole life is his work," the insider continued. "When he sees something less than professional, he wants to make it right." New GirlalumJake Johnsonalso once told a story about when the Cruise asked him tojoin him for a workoutat his personal gym while preparing to film 2017'sThe Mummytogether. As Johnson arrived, he was turned away by a member of production who told him not to bother Cruise. "And I'm saying to you that you are always welcome. I don't care what I'm doing in there. You're not other. You're my castmate. Come in."

Baltimore was too cold for formerRavensreceiverDiontae Johnson. Perhaps the weather in, uh, Cleveland will be more agreeable for one of theBrowns' newest pass-catchers. In a recent interview with theSports & Suitspodcast, Johnson confessed that he refused to enter a game for the Ravens last season because he was cold. "End of the third going into the fourth, they were like, 'Tae, we need you,'" Johnson said. "I was like, 'Nah, I don't think it's a good idea for me.' Like, my legs are already ice cold and I didn't wanna go out there and put bad stuff on film." According to the National Weather Service, the Baltimore area experienced a high of 44 degrees and a low of 21 degrees on Dec. 1, 2024, the date of the game in question: a RavensWeek 13loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. CLEVELAND BROWNS NEWS:Team had dramatic 2025 draft. How does rookie class look? Baltimore waived him a week after he served his suspension, and theHouston Texansclaimed him a few days later. The former Raven didn't stick in Houston long. He also told Sports & Suits that the Texans prioritized their younger guys for playing time after he joined the team. Before long, Johnson said he "checked out mentally." "After that, they said I was a distraction and they released me," the veteran said. Houston waived Johnson after Week 18, and the Ravens re-claimed the wideout. Mavericks star Kyrie Irving reportedly set to sign new 3-year, $119 million contract after declining optionNew Foto - Mavericks star Kyrie Irving reportedly set to sign new 3-year, $119 million contract after declining option

Kyrie Irving is sticking with the Dallas Mavericks. Irving declined his $43 million player option for next season on Tuesday night ahead of the deadline, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. He intends to sign a new three-year, $119 million deal with the franchise in the near future, however, which will keep him out of free agency this summer. Irving's new deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. The new deal will pay Irving about $40 million per season. Though he had the chance to leave, Irving was never expected to make a move away from the Mavericks this summer. The nine-time All-Star is currently recovering from a torn ACL he sustained in March. Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 50 games last season with the Mavericks. The Mavericks reportedly hope the 33-year-old will be back on the floor playing again around January. His new deal, however, enables the Mavericks to unlock a $5.7 million midlevel exception to pursue a guard in free agency to take his place in the meantime, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. The deal is the second one the Mavericks have made this week. They alsostruck a three-year, $54 million deal with center Daniel Gaffordon Monday to bolster their frontcourt even more. The two new contracts come ahead of Wednesday'sNBA Draft, too, where the Mavericks areexpected to select former Duke star Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick. The Mavericks, who were thrust into turmoil in the wake of their decision to trade star Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the deadline last season, won the draft lottery for the first time in franchise history despite entering it with a less than 2% chance to do so. Though Irving is still months away from even playing again, and he's undoubtedly on the back half of his career, the Mavericks have locked down their star guard for the foreseeable future.

11 Rules "America's Got Talent" Contestants Must Follow (From the Dress Code to Song Choice)

The NBC competition reality show returned for its 20th season on May 27, 2025.America's Got Talent, which first premiered in June 2006, has had no shortage of talented contestants grace its stage over the last 19 years. Celebrity judgesSimon Cowell,Sofía Vergara,Howie MandelandMel Ball play a vital role in determining who can move on in the competition. However, all the contestants have to follow a certain set of rules before they even step foot in front of the judges. If people make it past the initial audition phase with the judges, there are additional rules they must follow in order to compete on the hit show. For the show's 20th season, viewers will get to see even more of howAGTworks in a new "behind-the-scenes" filming style. "Thisseason is special- I reckon we're showing about 40% more of the process and everything that goes on behind the scenes, which I find fascinating," Cowell told PEOPLE ahead of the premiere. "This year, fans will get to see what it's like to be a contestant: the highs, the nerves, and the emotions. Everything." Here are 11 rules that all contestants onAmerica's Got Talentmust follow. Trae Patton/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal/Getty Just like many other reality TV shows and competition shows, all people wanting to try out forAmerica's Got Talentmust meet the show's specific eligibility requirements, per theshow's website. While there is no maximum age, hopeful contestants must be 18 years or older or must have a parent or guardian present with them if they're younger than 18. In addition, all contestants must be a United States citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa before their audition. People are also required to list any connections they have to the show prior to their audition. Once they make it past the open call, contestants are subject to a background check. Finally, a hopeful contestant cannot be actively running for public office. Trae Patton/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty America's Got Talentproducers narrow down the candidates who will audition for the judges. Over the years, the open call auditions have taken different formats. For season 20, hopeful contestants could sign up for an in-person audition in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 12, 2025. However, the producers also allow people to submit an audition video or sign up for a virtual open call. Thewebsiteassures people that all of the three methods are "equally considered." Regardless of how someone chooses to audition, all acts are subject to a time maximum of 90 seconds. "We enjoy all talent, whether you are an amazing singer, or can do something really weird with your body. We want to be shocked and amazed by what you can do in 90 seconds!" thewebsitereads. The producers ultimately choose a certain number of acts to perform in front of the celebrity judges. Trae Patton/NBC Although singers are allowed to bring instruments to the auditions, they should also be prepared to sing without one. "Singers typically perform acapella to avoid overpowering vocals with backing tracks," the show'swebsiteexplains. "Prepare a verse and chorus of your song and have additional songs ready in case requested. Playing an instrument while singing is always allowed." Chris Haston/NBC As viewers know, there is no shortage of adventurous and mystifying acts onAGT. While the show allows a myriad of exciting and enticing props — like swords, animals and fire — they all must be approved by producers beforehand for safety purposes. Trae Patton/NBC During the early auditions, producers provide wardrobe guidance for contestants. After participants make it to the live shows, they work with the show's wardrobe team to select their performance outfits. Trae Patton/NBC Singing contestants work with producers to determine which songs best showcase their vocals and also follow legal licensing rules. As many fans know, the first round of auditions in front of theAGTjudges aren't always winners. However, all four judges have to press their red X button in order for someone to completely stop performing. Otherwise, the contestant is required to complete their audition. However, if a hopeful receives all four red X buttons, the rest of their audition is disqualified for judges to consider. Contestants should also be prepared for follow-up questions, since judges can ask them to show additional material during their audition. Vivian Zink/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Contestants are not provided any "additional compensation, payments, residuals, reuse fees or other payments" from the show. While they aren't paid for their time on the show, contestants are provided with various other services for their time on the show — including living accommodations, food, equipment, travel, transportation and medical, psychological and first aid services. America's Got Talentand its producers are allowed to disqualify any contestant "at any time for any reason or for no reason, in its sole discretion." This rule is included in many reality competition show contracts. Trae Patton/NBC OnAmerica's Got Talent, the four celebrity judges initially determine how far contestants advance until they reach the live shows. From there, America's votes decide the finalists and the eventual winner. However, if any problems arise with the voting system from fans, producers are next in line to determine who advances. Casey Durkin/NBC AGThas been a fan favorite for years because of some of the candid commentary from judges and fans alike. The audience is allowed to applaud or boo both contestants and the judges. Participants must accept that their "appearance, depiction and portrayal" on the show may be "disparaging, defamatory, embarrassing or of an otherwise unfavorable nature." Many reality TV shows have similar contracts. Read the original article onPeople

2025 NBA Draft predictions: Last-minute expert projections from around the internetNew Foto - 2025 NBA Draft predictions: Last-minute expert projections from around the internet

TheNBA Finalsmight have just ended, but theNBA draftis close. So close we can almost smell that unforgettable stench of improperly fitting snapbacks and Adam's Silver's ever-round glasses. While this year's No. 1 pick is all but assured in Duke'sCooper Flagg, there are still a ton of question marks surrounding the draft, particularly at the end of the top-ten. Will the Rutgers duo ofDylan HarperandAce Baileyeach go in the top five? Will any international players go in the top 10? Are Flagg's teammates top-10 bound as well? These questions will be answered shortly, but here are the latest predictions from experts around the internet: ANALYSIS:Pacers come up short in NBA Finals. Is their championship window already closed? Flagg is obviously the top prospect in the draft, but he had a lot of help around him, particularly his teammates Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach, whoUSA TODAY Sportshas going in the top 10. Regarding Knueppel, USA TODAY Sports writes, "He can ignite an offense with his 3-point shot, thanks to an efficient motion, seemingly always ready to receive the ball in his shooting pocket. He can also lace shots from midrange, take care of the ball and is money on free throws." Knueppel is predicted to go seventh overall to theNew Orleans Pelicans. Maluach is expected to go right after to theBrooklyn Nets. USA TODAY Sports writes: "Maluach is a mobile big who excels in pick-and-rolls and has the hands to catch lobs for easy dunks; soft touch at the rim; shot-blocker/rim protector; active on the offensive glass; will get stronger and has a great aptitude for the game, learning concepts quickly." Illinois' Kasparas Jakucionis is expected to go somewhere late in the top 10 but ESPN's Jeremy Woo predicts he will fall out entirely and land at No. 12 to theChicago Bulls. Woo writes, "Jakucionis' unselfishness, playmaking, and size enabling him to play on and off the ball make him a relatively seamless fit in most places, with upside long-term considering he recently turned 19 years old." O'Connor writes, "On one hand, it seems outrageous that a player with Bailey's scoring talent could drop this far. Bailey is a ridiculous shot-making machine, capable of splashing contested jumpers from every spot on the floor and with the swagger of a throwback bucket-getter. And he wants to be a star, too, so the vision is there. But on the other hand, it's hard to have watched these playoffs and believe Bailey is anywhere close to seeing his style translate." Joan Beringer is widely regarded as the second-best international prospect this year, behind Noa Essengue. Regarding Beringer, Brazilier believes he'll leap up the draft boards and fall at No. 13 to theAtlanta Hawks. Brazilier writes, "The rim-running, shot-blocking 18-year-old is a late-riser and considered one of the top interior defenders in this draft. He only started playing basketball three years ago. Soccer was his sport of choice growing up. His 7-foot-4 1/2 wingspan would make for a heckuva goalie." Whit Merrifield retires after twice leading MLB in hits over his 9 seasonsNew Foto - Whit Merrifield retires after twice leading MLB in hits over his 9 seasons

Whit Merrifield is retiring after a nine-season career that included twice leading the MLB in hits and three trips to the All-Star Game. The 36-year-old posted on social media that the birth of his daughter last year played a role in the decision. Merrifield, a utilityman whose career began with Kansas City, was granted free agency after finishing last season with Atlanta. He didn't play in 2025. "At this point in my life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders," wrote Merrifield, who had 192 hits for the Royals in 2018 and led the majors again a year later with 206. Merrifield played his last game with the Braves on Sept. 30, 2024,when they had to play a Monday doubleheaderagainst the New York Mets to settle the National League wild-card race. Heavy rains from Hurricane Helene had rained out both games in Atlanta a week earlier. The Mets clinched a wild card with a victory in Game 1, which Merrifield played. He sat for the second game, which the Braves won to move on to the postseason as well. Merrifield was a ninth-round pick by Kansas City in the 2010 amateur draft and made his debut with the Royals six years later, the season after the club won its first World Series in 30 years. Merrifield played in every game from 2019-21, which included the 2020 season shortened to 60 games by the pandemic. The Royals didn't make the playoffs in any of Merrifield's six full seasons, and he was traded to Toronto in 2022. He went to the postseason twice with the Blue Jays, but wasn't a regular in the lineup. Merrifield led the majors in stolen bases three times, including a career-high 45 in 2018. He hit .280 with 94 homers, 485 RBIs, 29 triples and 218 steals in 1,147 games. The last All-Star trip for Merrifield came in 2023 with Toronto, and he signed as a free agent with Philadelphia that next offseason. The Phillies released Merrifieldlast July, and the South Carolina native signed with the Braves. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb
