Two groups played their third and final matches at the Club World Cup on Tuesday, with Benfica and Chelsea punching their tickets to the knockout stage. Bayern Munich and Flamengo had both already clinched advancement. Here's how it all went down: Despite the constant pressure from Bayern Munich through almost 100 minutes, Benfica managed to maintain their brick-wall-like defense to protect their 1-0 lead. A 13th-minute goal from Andreas Schjelderup put Benfica on the board as Bayern dominated in all aspects but scoring. The German giants controlled 73% of the possession and fired 13 shots, with four on-frame. Benfica had seven shots with four on target, which proved sufficient for them to win the group with 7 points. Boca Juniors' 41 shots were not enough to break the deadlock with Auckland City despite being highly favored to win. With 10 of their attempts hitting the target, Boca got on the scoreboard due to an own goal from Auckland's Nathan Garrow in the 26th minute (thoughGarrow's heroicsalso kept Auckland in for the draw). Christian Thomas Gray eliminated the error with a goal for the club from New Zealand. Auckland shot three attempts on goal, with two on target to split the points. Chelsea took the lead in first-half stoppage time then added another two minutes later. The latter goal was striker Liam Delap's first with his new club after coming over on a £30 million signing from Ipswich Town earlier this month. Chelsea controlled possession so much that Tunis had more offsides calls than shots, and zero shots on goal. LAFC came so close to picking up its first win in the Club World Cup on its final night of group play. Dénis Bouanga scored the first goal of the night in the 84th minute after a slow back-and-forth where Flamengo missed several clear goal opportunities. But just two minutes later, Wallace Yan followed suit after he flew past a trio of defenders with a perfect equalizer. That gave Flamengo the Group D win, and set up a match with Bayern Munich next. Atlanta, which has won nine of 12 overall, improved to 5-0 against its NL East rival this year — all in the past eight days. After getting an encouraging performance from starterFrankie Montas in his Mets debut,New York blew a 3-0 lead and lost for the 10th time in 11 games. On June 25, 1993, Letterman left NBC with a spring in his step, moving from 30 Rockefeller Center to the Ed Sullivan Theater and a new gig at CBS. He also made sure his last show at the old shop was an absolute barn burner — featuring some greatest hits clips (including the time he tried, and failed,to bring a fruit basket to his new corporate chieftains), a particularly hilarious visit fromTom Hanks, andBruce Springsteentearing it up with one of his best TV appearances and a fiery version of his hit "Glory Days." Letterman's departure fromLate Night With David Letterman, withJay Lenotaking over theTonight Showgig fromJohnny Carsonthat the Indiana-bred funnyman thought was rightfully his, was a major showbiz story, leading to a well-publicized bidding war for Letterman's talents and lawyers declaring that some of his gags were the "intellectual property" of NBC. (Indeed, the legal term "intellectual property" was not part of the popular vernacular the way it is now, and we have the Letterman-NBC feud to blame.) This whole song-and-dance was even made into an HBO film calledThe Late Shiftdirected by Betty Thomas. With a "better late than never," he welcomed the Boss. Wearing a flannel shirt and jeans, he joined the World's Most Dangerous Band,Paul Shaffer's group that would soon change its name to the CBS Orchestra. Joining Springsteen were, on drums, Anton Fig; on guitar, Sig McGinnis; on keys, Shaffer; sitting in on sax and tambourine for the night,David Sanborn; and for reasons that remain elusive to our cursory internet research, Francisco Centeno on bass, andnotWill Lee. (Weirdly enough, other than Shaffer, Lee was the musician with the longest tenure in the band — but he wasn't there that night!) They played the appropriate tune for a send off — "Glory Days" — and if you've never seen the clip, luckilyit lives forever on YouTubethanks to some people who have uploaded it, in soft violation of NBC's intellectual property rights. The bar sequences in the video were shot at the Hoboken, N.J., club Maxwell's, a legendary establishment that opened in 1978 and lasted until 2018. (It was the home base for two very important indie rock groups, The Feelies andYo La Tengo.) But as cool as that video was, it wasn't as cool as Springsteen jumping up on top of Shaffer's keyboard rig — leading Letterman to later joke, "If I had known that, I'd've gotten on the piano years ago!" NBC "Glory Days" is a 4-minute and 14-second song on the album, but theLate Nightperformance was about six minutes. This reporter remembers the episode going a little over its time, a final "so long!" from the show to NBC. The Boss would make three more appearances on a Letterman stage. In April 1995, he and the E Street Band stopped by theLate Show With David Lettermanand played "Murder, Incorporated" and "Secret Garden," and then again in December of that year, he came with just his acoustic guitar to sing "Youngstown." In 2002, Springsteen and the E Street Band performed "The Rising" and "Lonesome Day" — and for the first time he sat on Letterman's couch to trade some zings. MultipleDukeplayers will be selected in the first round for the seventh time in eight years, and for the third time since 2018 the Blue Devils could have three players chosen in the top 10. "I learned my lesson," the HGTV star, 48, tells PEOPLE of involving her kids in her HGTV show. "I think there's one gift we can give our children, and I give them privacy. They're out in public with me a lot, and I shield them." Curtis welcomed Ethan in 1997 with her ex Steven Cimini, and Harper in 2015 with ex Shane Maguire. Ethan appeared on the show when he was younger, but Curtis says he isn't seeking more screen time on the home renovation series. "My son, when we first started the TV show years ago, we didn't have all the social media presence," she recalls. "He was in sixth grade, he thought it was cool, and his buddies thought it was cool to be on TV. And they still make fun of him because they're like, 'Oh my gosh, we can see you as a young boy, you had braces' and all this. But I won't do that again. "You'll see I refer to them a lot," she admits. "I talk about my children a lot. I'm that mom. I mention my children every breath I have." "But that's something cool for me to have, and I think it's a gift to my children that if they want to be on TV, they could be on TV, but not on this one." Her extended break from filmingcame after a major personal "setback,"the exact nature of which she's keeping private for now. "I had a setback in my life that just rocked me to the core, and it was one of those moments where I thought, how do I get through this one?" Curtis tells PEOPLE. "I prayed on it and it was just devastating for me. I had to make a decision right there and then like, 'Okay, we're going to let this affect us for a very long time, or we're going to pick it up and go.'" Buying the Wyoming house on a whim was part of what pulled her out of that dark moment, she says. CINCINNATI (AP) — Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was ejected for the second time this season for arguing a called strike. Chisholm was ejected before the bottom of the ninth inning of Tuesday night's5-4, 11-inning loss to the Cincinnati Redsby plate umpire Mark Wegner after a pitch from Lyon Richardson that Chisholm thought was low in the zone on a 2-0 count was called a strike in the top half. Chisholm struck out and continued arguing after leaving the batter's box. Yankees captain Aaron Judge walked out together as Chisholm went to third base for the bottom of the ninth. Chisholm was still talking — he said it was to himself. Wegner held a hand up, as if to say enough, then ejected Chisholm. "I looked at him and I said, 'Why are you looking at me?' And that's when I got tossed," Chisholm said. "I didn't get tossed for saying nothing crazy. I didn't get tossed saying, 'Oh, that was a bad pitch,' I got tossed for saying, 'Why are you looking at me?' I don't think that's a good reason to toss anybody." Chisholm was ejected from the a6-3 victory over Tampa Bayon April 17 for arguing a called third strike by John Bacon. The following day,Chisholm was suspended for one game and fined by Major League Baseball,which cited his conduct and violation of MLB's social media policy when he posted in-game criticism online. Thesuspension was later dropped. Chisholm said he needed to do a better job of controlling his emotions. "That's why I'm upset because I wasn't talking to you (the umpire). I didn't even have nothing to say to you because I know if I had something to say you I was going to get tossed," he said. Manager Aaron Boone came out to try and held Chisholm back from Wegner. "Obviously Jazz didn't like the 2-0 call, some words at home played within the at-bat, and then Jazz went out and says he wasn't saying anything to Mark Wegner. And Mark was looking down at him and ends up running them. Not a great situation," Boone said. The ejection meant Oswald Peraza moved to third base and DJ LeMahieu came in to play second base. The Yankees have dropped the first two games of the series against the Reds and lost for the ninth time in 12 games. New York (45-34) has seen its lead in the AL East over Tampa Bay cut to one game. Nine-time All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving will decline his $43 million player option and instead plans to sign a three-year, $119 million contract to remain with the Dallas Mavericks, ESPN reported on Tuesday night. Irving, who will have a player option for the 2027-28 season, per the report, is recovering from a torn ACL which ended his season in March. He spoke with ESPN on Tuesday night and said that there is a long-term commitment from himself and the Dallas organization and he wants to build a legacy with the Mavericks, believing the franchise can win a league championship. Irving, 33, could return from the left knee injury as soon as January, per the report. He averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 36.1 minutes in 50 games (all starts) last season. In parts of three seasons with the Mavericks, Irving has averaged 25.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 35.9 minutes in 128 regular-season games (all starts). He averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 40.0 minutes in starting all 22 playoff games as the Mavs advanced to 2024 NBA Finals, where they lost to Boston Celtics in five games. For his career, Irving is averaging 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 34.5 minutes in 779 games (all starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2011-17), Celtics (2017-19), Brooklyn Nets (2019-23) and Mavericks. (2023-present). He won an NBA title with the Cavaliers in 2016. The Cavaliers selected Irving with the No. 1 pick of the 2011 NBA Draft after his freshman season at Duke. He was the NBA Rookie of the Year with Cleveland. Dallas has the No. 1 pick of the 2025 draft, which starts on Wednesday night, and is expected to pick All-America Cooper Flagg, a freshman out of Duke. The Mavericks, who could build around Irving, Flagg and 10-time All-Star big man Anthony Davis, 32, will need a point guard while Irving is sidelined.
