Justin Tucker suspended 10 games for violating NFL's personal conduct policyNew Foto - Justin Tucker suspended 10 games for violating NFL's personal conduct policy

The NFL announced Thursday it had suspended free agent kickerJustin Tuckerfor the first 10 weeks of the 2025 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Tucker's suspension comes after the formerBaltimore Ravenskicker wasaccused of sexual misconduct by several women. The NFLlaunched an investigationinto the allegations in February, whilethe Ravens released Tuckeron May 5 in what John Harbaugh referred to as a "complicated" decision. Tucker has denied the allegationsand expressed his "disappointment with the NFL's decision" in a statement from his representative, Rob Roche. "Justin has always strived to carry himself in a way that would make his family and community proud," the statement read, perESPN's Adam Schefter. "He stands by his previous statements.  In order to put this difficult episode behind him and get back on the field as soon as possible, we have advised Justin to accept this resolution and close this matter. "The people who know Justin best know his character and understand that while he remains fully committed to excellence as a football player, he is deeply dedicated to his most important lifetime roles as a father, husband, and friend." Tucker's suspension will run from roster cutdown day on Aug. 26 through Nov. 11, when he will be eligible for reinstatement. The NFL clarified Tucker will be able to serve his suspension "while not being under contract with a club." If he is signed during the offseason, he is allowed to participate in training camp and preseason games. The NFL's personal conduct policystates that violations of the policy involving "criminal assault or battery (felony); domestic violence, dating violence, child abuse and other forms of family violence; or sexual assault involving physical force or committed against someone incapable of giving consent" come with a baseline suspension of six games without pay for a first-time violator. However, the policy also notes, "the presence of possible aggravating factors may warrant a longer suspension." Those aggravating factors include, but are not limited to, "a prior violation of the policy, similar misconduct before joining the NFL, violence involving a weapon, choking, repeated striking, or when an act is committed against a particularly vulnerable person, such as a child, a pregnant woman, or an elderly person, or where the act is committed in the presence of a child." San Francisco bookstore stops selling J.K. Rowling titles due to author's anti-trans viewsNew Foto - San Francisco bookstore stops selling J.K. Rowling titles due to author's anti-trans views

A bookstore in San Francisco announced earlier this month that it will no longer sell titles by J.K. Rowling, including her popular "Harry Potter" series, due to the author's anti-transgender views and advocacy. Booksmith, which opened in 1976 and is in the city's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, said the final straw came last month, when Rowlingannounced on social mediathat she would use her personal wealth to fund theJ.K. Rowling Women's Fund, which describes itself as a legal fund to support "individuals and organisations fighting to retain women's sex-based rights in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces." Though the fund doesn't mention trans people specifically, Rowling has been vocally opposed to trans women's inclusion in women's spaces, and proponents of efforts to restrict trans rights often describe such efforts as advocating for women's "sex-based" rights. "With this announcement, we've decided to stop carrying her books," Booksmith said in a statement on Instagram. "We don't know exactly what her new 'women's fund' will entail, but we know that we aren't going to be a part of it. As a group of queer booklovers, we also had our adolescences shaped by wizards and elves. Look at us, it's obvious. If you or someone you love wants to dive into the world of Harry Potter, we suggest doing so by buying used copies of these books." A representative for Rowling said the author was unavailable for comment. On Monday, Booksmith provideda list on its website of fantasy books similarto the "Harry Potter" series for readers who are interested in alternatives, sparking some backlash and a debate about whether bookstores should make decisions about which books their customers can access. "So you're going to curate your selections to only sell books by authors that you agree with politically," one commenterwrote on social media. "Good to know. I'll be shopping elsewhere." Booksmith responded: "There are plenty of books we carry that we don't 'agree' with, but in this case, it's not politics at all. When the author of a book states that all sales of those books will contribute to an anti-trans fund, the only way we can choose not to participate is by not selling the books any longer. It's no different than when we encourage you to buy your books in indies rather than purchase them on Amazon. It stands in direct opposition to everything we believe in and that we have tried to uphold in our nearly 50 years of selling books. If you want to read the HP books, we implore you to buy them used locally, where the money stays in the community you love." Other commenters thanked the store and said they would be returning to shop soon. Booksmith did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for additional comment. Rowling first faced backlash for her views on trans people in 2019, whenshe tweeted in support of a British researcher who lost her job over social media poststhat said allowing trans women into female spaces poses a safety threat to cisgender girls and women. In 2020, after facing repeated criticism that her views were transphobic, Rowlingdoubled down in a 4,000-word blog postin which she said she fears that social media is fueling a "contagion" that has led to more young people coming out as trans and that, as a survivor of domestic abuse and assault, she is concerned about allowing trans women into female spaces. In that post, she said she wanted "trans women to be safe," but, "at the same time, I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe." Trans-inclusive policies, particularly for restrooms, do not increase safety risks, according to astudy published in 2018andanother earlier this year. Her views have become more extreme over the years, with her recently referring to trans women as men on social media. In August, she alsoperpetuated misinformationthat Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif is a man, leading Khelif tofile a cyberbullying complaint against herlater that month. Rowling has not publicly responded to the complaintexcept to share an article on social media that criticized Kheliffor a beauty PR campaign and called for her to release DNA results. Khelif's lawsuit against Rowling is ongoing.

Faith Kipyegon runs fastest mile ever by a woman, but falls short of sub-4 goalNew Foto - Faith Kipyegon runs fastest mile ever by a woman, but falls short of sub-4 goal

Faith Kipyegon's attempt to become the first woman to run a mile in less than four minutes came up 6.42 seconds short Thursday, with the combination of Kipyegon's speed and a complex system of pacemakers not enough to overcome a barrier that still has never been broken. Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1,500 meters who is considered the greatest middle-distance runner of all-time, finished in 4:06.42 in Paris in what is the fastest mile ever run by a woman. Although it bettered her world record of 4:07.64, run in 2023, her time will not count as an official world record given the extraordinary set of assistance — including male pacers — used during the specialized race organized by Nike and her sponsor and run in front of a limited crowd at Stade Charlety. Kipyegon entered as the only woman to run a mile in less than 4:10, and in an attempt to knock off the 7.64 seconds separating her from history, Kipyegon ran alongside a team of 13 pacers using a carefully scripted choreography and formation to help the 31-year-old Kenyan "draft," or reduce the amount of wind resistance she faced. To make Kipyegon even more aerodynamic, Nike created a specialized speed suit and sports bra and produced a new set of spikes. Her coach, Patrick Sang, said on a Nike-organized broadcast before the race that Kipyegon appeared "a bit nervous" when he saw her Thursday morning. Her attempt in Paris was not considered an impossibility because science suggested a sub-4 run was possible. In February, a team of researchers published a paper that modeled a race in which Kipyegon would stay within 40 inches of one pacer in front of her, and 40 inches in front of another behind her, with a new pacing team swapping in halfway through. With that drafting strategy, the researchers concluded, Kipyegon could run 3:59.37 — the exact time run by Roger Bannister in 1954 when he became the first human to break the sub-four-minute barrier. Nike did not consult with the researchers on the design of its drafting strategy. Instead, it employed pacers stationed in front of Kipyegon, to her right and behind her, to create a "pocket" of less drag. Five ran in front as a "shield." The pacers included Grant Fisher, an American two-time Olympic bronze medalist. She reached the halfway point in 2:01.7, and with one lap to go she had run 3:01.84. As the race progressed, pacers dropped off, leaving five with her as she entered the final straightaway. In the days leading up to the race, one of the researchers who co-wrote the paper outlining the sub-four possibility said that even if Kipyegon did not dip under four minutes, the run could still be considered a step forward in understanding the possibilities of women's running. The researcher, Shalaya Kipp, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Mayo Clinic and former Olympic distance runner, compared Kipyegon's run to when Nike staged another "moonshot" race in 2017 to help Eliud Kipchoge become the first person to run a marathon in less than two hours. His first attempt fell short, but Kipchoge eclipsed two hours on his second. "Is it really going to be a failure if she runs, you know, 4:01, 4:02? It's still going to be a big deal," Kipp toldNBC News last week."That's how Eliud Kipchoge's first sub-two [marathon] attempt was. It wasn't perfect, but it lowered the standard, and it made us realize if we can get closer, we can do it."

NBA Draft: Why it's unlikely there will be a Jalen Brunson or Nikola Jokić in this year's second roundNew Foto - NBA Draft: Why it's unlikely there will be a Jalen Brunson or Nikola Jokić in this year's second round

Apologies to any teams hoping to unearth the next Draymond Green, Jalen Brunson or Nikola Jokić in the second round of this year's NBA draft. Overlooked gems could be unusually scarce Thursday night with so many prospects returning to college to take advantage of the skyrocketing NIL market. In the pre-NIL era, college basketball underclassmen routinely entered the NBA Draft even if they were projected to slip to the second round or go unselected. They earned more money chasing an NBA two-way contract or an overseas payday than they could returning to a college model where the only payouts came under the table. The calculus began to change in 2021 when a series of court rulings forced the NCAA to allow athletes to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness without fear of penalty. This spring, underclassmen who were fringe NBA prospectsreturned to college in record numbersbecause deep-pocketed college programs were willing to pay them as much as $3 million to $4 million per year. Only 106 playersentered the 2025 NBA Draft as early entry candidates, the lowest number since 2015 and down froma peak of 353 in 2021.More than half those 106 early entrants then withdrew from the draft before the NBA's deadline — even some who might have been selected in the 20-45 range this week. Texas Tech's JT Toppin, Florida's Thomas Haugh, UConn's Alex Karaban, Duke's Isaiah Evans and Purdue's Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn were among the prominent college stars who did not even test the waters this spring. Alabama's Labaron Philon, Kentucky's Otega Oweh and Auburn's Tahaad Pettiford withdrew from the draft just before the May 28 deadline for underclassmen to make their decisions. So did Houston's Milos Uzan, Florida's Alex Condon, Michigan's Yaxel Lendeborg and San Diego State's Miles Byrd. "This year's draft class, more than any ever, has been affected by the NIL and affected by the new pay-for-play,"Boston Celtics general manager Brad Stevens told NBC Sports Boston last month.Stevens added that the absence of the prospects who returned to college would be felt in "the back end of the draft and even into the late first." That much was apparent from the lists ofbest available players entering Thursday night's second round. Many were college seniors, from Stanford's Maxime Raynaud, to Creighton's Ryan Kalkbrenner, to Auburn's Johni Broome. Others were international prospects like Noah Penda and Bogoljub Marković. Among the playerslisted as potential second-round picks by Yahoo Sports NBA Draft expert Kevin O'Connorare undersized guards like West Virginia's Javon Small, catch-and-shoot specialists like Kentucky's Koby Brea and athletically limited big men like Villanova's Eric Dixon. Those are the types of players who likely wouldn't be selected in previous deeper drafts. The good news for NBA teams is that the dearth of second-round talent could be a short-term problem. Some prospects who returned to college this year will exhaust their eligibility by 2026. Others could have more incentive to chase NBA money in the future. TheHouse vs. NCAA settlementputs a cap on how much colleges are allowed to pay athletes via revenue sharing and calls for the establishment of a new enforcement entity responsible for stamping out the pay-for-play deals that have dominated the NIL era of college sports. Athletes are required to submit to the new NIL Go clearinghouse all third-party NIL deals that exceed $600. The clearinghouse then must determine which deals are for a valid business purpose and are within a "reasonable range of compensation" and which are simply a recruiting incentive. How will the clearinghouse determine which deals are circumventing NIL rules and which are legitimate? Nobody knows. Nor does anyone know whether the clearinghouse's decisions will hold up in court against a legal challenge. The answers to those questions will determine whether future fringe NBA prospects turn pro as quickly as possible or keep returning to college in record numbers. That trend will only continue if the seven-figure NIL money is still available.

Music history is littered with projects planned, anticipated, even completed — and then scrappedNew Foto - Music history is littered with projects planned, anticipated, even completed — and then scrapped

NEW YORK (AP) — The idea thatBruce Springsteenwrote, recorded and ultimately shelved entire albums of music may seem odd to the casual listener. Why put yourself through all that work for nothing? Yet "lost albums" are embedded in music industry lore. Some were literally lost. Some remained unfinished or unreleased because of tragedy, shortsighted executives or creators who were perfectionist — or had short attention spans. Often, the music is eventually made public, like Springsteen is doing now, although out of context from the times in which it was originally made. So in honor of Springsteen's 83-song"Tracks II: The Lost Albums" box setbeing released Friday, The Associated Press has collected 10 examples of albums that were meant to be but weren't. "Smile," The Beach Boys Back in the news with thedeath of Brian Wilson, this album "invented the category of the lost masterpiece in popular music," says Anthony DeCurtis, contributing editor at Rolling Stone. Some of the material that surfaced suggested Wilson, the Beach Boys' chief writer, was well on his way: the majestic single "Good Vibrations," the centerpiece "Heroes and Villains" and the reflective "Surf's Up." Wilson succumbed to internal competitive pressure worsened by mental illness and drug abuse while making it in 1966 and 1967, eventually aborting the project. He later finished it as a solo album backed by the Wondermints in 2004. Thebetter-known songswere joined with some psychedelic-era curios that displayed Wilson's melodic sense and matchless ability as a vocal arranger, along with lyrics that some fellow Beach Boys worried were too "out there." "The Black Album," Prince Themercurial Princepulled back this disc, set for release in December 1987, at the last minute. Some promo copies had already slipped out, and it was so widely bootlegged that when Warner Bros. officially put it out in limited release in 1994, the company billed it as "The Legendary Black Album." Encased in an all-black sleeve, the project was said to be Prince's nod to Black fans who may have felt they had lost him to a pop audience. It's almost nonstop funk, including a lascivious Cindy Crawford tribute and the workout "Superfunkycalifragisexy." Themaestro's instinctswere well-placed, though. Coming after "Sign O' the Times" — arguably his peak — this would have felt like a minor project. "Cigarettes and Valentines," Green Day Written and recorded in 2003, Green Day's "Cigarettes and Valentines" was actually lost; someone apparently stole the master tapes. Feeling on a creative roll, the rock triodecided against recreating what they'd done and pressed on with new material. Smart move. The result was"American Idiot," the band's best work.Perhaps the robbery was "just a sign that we made a crappy record and we should make a better one," songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV. The title cut later surfaced on a 2010 live album. The rest was lost to time. "Detox," Dr. Dre To say anticipation was high forDr. Dre'sthird album when he started recording in 2002 puts it mildly. The theme disc about a hitman, which Dre described as a "hip-hop musical," had an all-star squad of contributors including Eminem, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes and Kendrick Lamar. "I'd describe it as the most advanced rap album musically and lyrically we'll probably ever have a chance to listen to," co-producer Scott Storch told MTV. But we never have. When he announced a different third album in 2015, Dre explained on his radio show what happened to "Detox": "I didn't like it. It wasn't good. ... I worked my ass off on it, and I don't think I did a good enough job." "Black Gold," Jimi Hendrix A series of unfinished demos, "Black Gold" was a taste of where guitar godJimi Hendrixmight have gone creatively if he hadn't died at 27 in 1970. He was composing a song suite about an animated Black superhero, says Tom Maxwell, whose podcast "Shelved" unearths stories behind lost music. Hendrix sent a tape of his work to longtime drummer Mitch Mitchell for advice on fleshing it out. That music was set aside at Mitchell's home and forgotten for two decades after Hendrix died. To date, Hendrix's estate has made only one of these recordings public, a song called "Suddenly November Morning." Hendrix, after clearing his throat, slips in and out of falsetto while accompanying himself on an acoustic guitar. "A Story," Yoko Ono Written whileYoko Onowas separated from John Lennon duringhis infamous "lost weekend"in 1973-74, "A Story" had the potential of changing the musical narrative around her. It was a strong album — without the avant-garde stylings that made Ono a challenge for mainstream listeners — recorded with musicians who worked on Lennon's "Walls & Bridges." Maxwell calls it "an emancipation manifesto" that was set aside when Ono reconciled with Lennon. She's never publicly explained why, Maxwell says, although one song seems clearly about an affair she had while Lennon was away. Some of the material from "A Story" was included as part of the "Onobox" project that came out in 1992, and the album was released separately in 1997. Ono also re-recorded some of its songs in 1980, and Lennon was holding a tape of her composition "It Happened" when he wasshot and killed. In it, she sings about an unspecified, seemingly traumatic event: "It happened at a time of my life when I least expected." That wasn't even the most chilling premonition. Her song "O'Oh" ended with firecrackers that sound like gunshots. It was left off the 1997 release. "Chinese Democracy," Guns N' Roses Guns N' Roses was at the top of the hard rock world when theybegan recording a new album in 1994.It didn't go well. Inconclusive sessions slogged on for years, and all but singer Axl Rose left the group. Recording costs exceeded a staggering $13 million, by some accounts the most expensive rock album ever. One witnesstold The New York Timesin 2005: "What Axl wanted to do was to make the best record that had ever been made. It's an impossible task. You could go on indefinitely, which is what they've done." When"Chinese Democracy" was finally releasedin 2008, the world yawned. "Love Man," Marvin Gaye Not even a decade after the triumph of "What's Going On,"Marvin Gayewas floundering. His "Here, My Dear" divorce album flopped, he struggled with drugs and searched for relevance in the disco era. The single "Ego Tripping Out," meant to herald a new album, laid bare the problems: Over a melody cribbed from Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff," the famously cool "Love Man" boasted like an insecure rapper. He scrapped the album, repurposing some its material for the 1981 disc "In Our Lifetime," a process so fraught he bitterly left his longtime label Motown. Gaye went to CBS, made a huge comeback with "Sexual Healing," then wasshot dead by his father in 1984. "Homegrown," Neil Young Neil Young rivals Prince in the volume of material left in his vault, and he's beensystematically releasing much of it.The mostly acoustic "Homegrown" was recorded as 1974 bled into 1975, during Young's breakup with actor Carrie Snodgress. Instead of releasing it in 1975, he put out another heartbreak album, the well-regarded "Tonight's the Night," about losing friends to drug abuse. When Young finally dropped"Homegrown" in 2020,he wrote in his blog, "Sometimes life hurts. This is the one that got away." "Streets of Philadelphia Sessions," Bruce Springsteen Of the discs included in Springsteen's "Tracks II" set, this was reportedly the closest to being released, in the spring of 1995. After the success of theOscar-winning song "Streets of Philadelphia,"Springsteen recorded an album in the same vein, with a synthesizer and West Coast rap-inspired drum loops setting the musical motif. Strikingly contemporary for its time, Springsteen ultimately felt it was too similar to previous releases dominated by dark stories about relationships. "I always put them away," he said of his lost albums. "But I don't throw them away." ___ David Bauder writes about the intersection of media and entertainment for the AP. Tyreek Hillis ready to change the narrative around theMiami Dolphins. A team built on speed and finesse, many point to Miami's lack of physicality and struggles in the cold weather as things that hold them back. TheDolphinshave routinely started fast since Mike McDaniel became the head coach in 2022. The Dolphins have compiled a 21-13 record in September, October, and November. However, they've posted a 7-12 record in December and January, including a 0-2 mark in the playoffs. During an appearance on the "Glory Daze with Johnny Manziel" podcast at the 2025 Fanatics Fest convention, Hill expressed a desire to flip the script. "It's time to change who we are as a team," Hill said of what he told the team as a leader. "It's time to change the narrative." "I'm tired of that narrative," Hill said. "I'm tired of living behind not being able to go to the playoffs and win in Miami because we got a damn good team. We got a good quarterback, we got a good offensive line and we got some good coaches. And we got some good people in the community who deserve to be a part of it. I feel like this is the year that we change all of that." It's been an interesting offseason for Hill. At one point, he appeared to be headed for a one-way ticket out of Miami. Trade rumors swirled around the star receiver, dating back to hisfrustration at the end of the season. Time healed all wounds in this case, however, as Hill is back in the fold and on good terms with McDaniel. "He's one of those guys that, at first, he was odd," Hill said of McDaniel. "But I'm in year four with Mike now and our relationship is great." MORE:Tyreek Hill says he doesn't deserve to be Dolphins captain, has to prove himself again The five-time All-Pro has dazzled during his three seasons in South Beach, posting at least 1,700 yards in two of them. Hill's game, at least statistically, went to another level following his trade from the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2022 season. Hill credits McDaniel for a lot of that success, noting that the coach spends a lot of time in the office trying to find ways to scheme players open. "He's probably one of the best offensive coordinators I've been around," Hill said. "One of the best minds I've been around. The way he utilizes me in motions and jet sweeps and just whatever it takes to get me open – those two years I had seventeen-hundred yards in a row, it was just him and his creativity." The praise didn't stop there. "Mike really is a genius though," Hill added. "He's a nerd for a reason. He's a nerd for football." The Dolphins are seeking a return to the playoffs this season after a disappointing 8-9 finish to the 2024 campaign. Hill is eager to lead the team, hoping they can find some playoff success, much like his former team in Kansas City. He believes they have what it takes to get there, citing the 2025 NBA Finals matchup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers as evidence. "We just seen OKC and the Pacers in the [NBA] Finals," Hill said. "Anything can happen, right?" The Dolphins open the 2025 regular season on the road against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
