Erling Haaland reaches 300 goals faster than Lionel Messi and Cristiano RonaldoNew Foto - Erling Haaland reaches 300 goals faster than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Erling Haaland scored the 300th goal of his career at theFIFA Club World Cupon Thursday, reaching the mark faster than many of his legendary contemporaries. Haaland achieved the milestone in the 52nd minute of Manchester City's 5-2 thumping over Juventus at Camping World Stadium inOrlando, Florida, with his team's third goal of the match. It wasn't the most convincing of finishes from the Norwegian, bundling the ball home from close range after a cross from Matheus Nunes left him with an open goal. The ball came off his left leg before ricocheting off his trailing right leg and into an empty net. It nevertheless brought up Haaland's 33rd goal of the season for City.Per ESPN, the 24-year-old reached 300 goals in 370 games, faster thanKylian Mbappé(409 games),Lionel Messi(418 games) and Cristiano Ronaldo (554 games) in their illustrious careers. "All I can say is congratulations, scoring 300 goals at 24 years old, this is quite good, right?" City manager Pep Guardiola said after the game. "I'm so happy for Erling, for his goal again and being involved in the short spaces. It was really good." Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden, Savinho and an own goal from Juve defender Pierre Kalulu helped City to the 5-2 victory on Thursday. The game was also a momentous occasion for midfielder Rodri, who made his first start after suffering a torn ACL last September and missing most of the season. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner played 65 minutes before being substituted. "He's the best player in the world," Guardiola said, per the Guardian. "He was missed, that was clear. I'm happy hopefully he can help us a lot." The emphatic victory over Juventus means City topped its Club World Cupgroupwith three wins from three games and will face Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia in the last 16 on Tuesday in Orlando. Max Verstappen heads into Red Bull's home race with upgrades and growing uncertaintyNew Foto - Max Verstappen heads into Red Bull's home race with upgrades and growing uncertainty

Max Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring is usually a recipe for success. The defendingFormula 1champion has an upgraded car for his team's home race in Austria — where he's won five times — on the back of an encouraging second place in Canada, where his two McLaren rivals collided. Zoom out, though, and the situation is much more uncertain. Verstappen remains at risk of a one-race ban for too many penalty points, Red Bull teammate Yuki Tsunoda is usually too far adrift to help him, and Verstappen's own future is far from clear. "I don't think we need to talk about that," Verstappen said Thursday when asked to confirm whether he'll stay with the team for 2026. "It's not really in my mind. It's just driving and trying to push the performance, you know. And then we focus on next year." What are Verstappen's options? Verstappen has a long-term contract through 2028, so in theory his Red Bull seat should be one of the safest on the grid. However, the deal hasperformance-related clauseswhich could reportedly allow a move. In that case, the most obvious option could be Mercedes, which has yet to confirm either driver for 2026. That would mean Verstappen teaming up with anold foein Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who'd also have to choose to drop either George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Dramatic changes to how F1 cars look and perform are coming in 2026, and Red Bull has to adapt more than most. For the first time in nearly two decades, it heads into a new era of F1 ruleswithout design guru Adrian Newey, who left last year and is now at Aston Martin. The other leading teams are sticking with their current engine arrangements, but not Red Bull. The team has an in-house engine developer, Red Bull Powertrains, but it's switching partners for 2026 from Honda to newcomer Ford. The second seat No team in F1 depends as much on one driver as Red Bull does on Verstappen. He's scored 155 of the team's 162 points this season. His teammates — first Liam Lawson, then Yuki Tsunoda — have struggled all season. That's helped to restore the reputation of Sergio Perez, who was dropped by Red Bull after scoring barely one-third of Verstappen's points last season. "I know, deep down, they really regret it," Perez said on a podcast this week. "And I know that from a very reliable source. It's tough. I have very good friends there, and people might think I take pleasure in what happened, but no." Red Bull's car seems to favor Verstappen's driving style over anyone else's, but the Dutch driver says he can't diagnose the issue because he's been with the team since 2016 and has nothing else to compare it with. "The thing is that I don't know any better, right?" he said Thursday. "I mean, I've basically started with Red bull, so I only know one car and that's how I drive. I adapt to it. Is it the best? Is it the fastest? Is it not? I don't know." ___ AP Sports Writer Tales Azzoni in Madrid contributed to this report. ___ AP auto racing:https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

Rebekah Del Rio, 'Mulholland Drive' Singer Who Performed 'Llorando' in David Lynch Classic, Dies at 57New Foto - Rebekah Del Rio, 'Mulholland Drive' Singer Who Performed 'Llorando' in David Lynch Classic, Dies at 57

Rebekah Del Rio, a singer-songwriter who achieved cinematic legend with her performance of "Llorando" in David Lynch's 2001 opus "Mulholland Drive," died June 23 at her residence in Los Angeles. She was 57 years old. Del Rio's death was confirmed through the Los Angeles Coroner's Office. No further details about her death are currently available. More from Variety Cinematographers Frederick Elmes and Peter Deming on Working With David Lynch and How His Unrealized Project Might Become a Book David Lynch Auction: Director's Chair Sells for $91,000; Highest Sale Is 'Ronnie Rocket' Scripts for $195,000 David Lynch's Red Director Chair Stops by Variety's Office Ahead of Live Auction Lynch was first introduced to Del Rio by their mutual CAA agent Brian Loucks in the mid-'90s. The singer was working under a country record deal in Nashville, Tenn., which she had landed off of her recording of "Llorando," a Spanish-language cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying." Upon their meeting, Lynch asked Del Rio to perform the number and covertly recorded her. The performance became the basis for the Club Silencio scene, an addition by Lynch to his by-then-rejected ABC pilot "Mulholland Drive," which he was reworking into a feature film. The Silencio sequence marks a reality-shattering crescendo to Lynch's film — and an emotional crest, with leads Naomi Watts and Laura Harring both bursting into tears while viewing Del Rio's performance in the cavernous club. While the sequence ends with Del Rio's character fainting, revealing that she had been lip-syncing, the singer belted out the number for every take while filming. "There were many takes. And with every take, I sang along, because I felt I had to produce that same feeling with the vibrato in my throat so the audience could see it," Del Riotold IndieWirein a 2022 interview. I also wanted the beautiful girls in the balcony, [the film's stars] Laura Harring and Naomi Watts, to experience it live. They were present while I was doing my scene, so I sang to them." The brief but memorable performance put Del Rio on the map in the film industry. She was called upon by writer-director Richard Kelly for his star-studded 2006 sci-fi dystopia "Southland Tales," in which Del Rio sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" during an apocalyptic final act. Her vocals can also be heard on the soundtracks for "Sin City," "Man on Fire" and "Streets of Legend." Del Rio's connection to Lynch continued through the rest of the filmmaker's career. (Lynch died in January at the age of 78.) She performed alongside Moby in one of the episode-capping roadhouse sequences of Showtime's revival series "Twin Peaks: The Return." She also joined for touring performances of The Red Room Orchestra Plays the Music of Twin Peaks over recent years. Less than two weeks before her death, Del Rio performed live at a charity event "Mulholland Drive" screening at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles. Born July 10, 1967 in Chula Vista, Calif., Del Rio began performing in San Diego before moving to Los Angeles. Shehad a son, Phillip C. DeMars, in 1986. DeMars died in 2009 at the age of 23. Add Olympics to list of places transgender people not welcome | OpinionNew Foto - Add Olympics to list of places transgender people not welcome | Opinion

The days of transgender athletes being able to compete at the Olympics are numbered. The International Olympic Committee will no doubt dispute that, arguing that new president Kirsty Coventry's announcement Thursday was only for aworking group to examine how to "protect the female category."But from her loaded language to the dearth of transgender athletes at the Games, it's obvious this is intended as a means to exclude, not include. "A lot of members shared with us their own experiences from their own countries that had nothing to do with Paris or any other specific sporting event. Just their cultural experiences they were sharing with us and culturally what was expected from us as an Olympic movement," Coventry said. "That made it very clear that we had to do something, and this was what everyone agreed was the way forward." Make no mistake: That "way forward" will take the IOC backward. And do so in contradiction of its own research and at great harm to an already vulnerable community. For the better part of 20 years, beginning with the 2004 Athens Olympics, transgender athletes were allowed to compete with minimal, if any, fuss. During that time, in fact, there was only one — one! — openly transgender woman who competed, weightlifter Laurel Hubbard in Tokyo. (Two nonbinary athletes have also competed.) But transgender women athletes have become an obsession for some folks with deep pockets and big platforms, and their disinformation campaign has now poisoned the discourse for the larger public. Most of us don't know anyone who is transgender, let alone a transgender athlete. Which ought to tell you how big a "threat" they are. But J.K. Rowling, Riley Gaines and the U.S. Republican Party have managed to convince even people who should know better that transgender women have both a competitive advantage and are a marauding horde about to overwhelm women's sports. The anecdotal evidence shows that to bepatently false. There are"less than 10"transgender men and women out of the half-million athletes competing in the NCAA, according to president Charlie Baker, and probably another 100 or so at the youth level. Hubbard, the lone transgender woman to compete openly at a Games, got knocked out in the opening round of the weightlifting competition in 2021. Even Lia Thomas, whose one NCAA title has been made into a sign of the apocalypse, lags well behind when compared with Olympic-level swimmers like Katie Ledecky and Kate Douglass. Know what else shows this hysteria over transgender athletes to be overblown?A study the IOC funded!Transgender women might actually be at adisadvantagecompared to cisgender women, researchers found, with lower lung function and cardiovascular fitness. "While longitudinal transitioning studies of transgender athletes are urgently needed, these results should caution against precautionary bans and sport eligibility exclusions that are not based on sport-specific (or sport-relevant) research," the researchers wrote. But ignorance, fear and hate are powerful motivators, so here we are. "It was very clear from the members that we have to protect the female category, first and foremost," Coventry said. "We have to do that to ensure fairness, but we need to do that with a scientific approach. And with the inclusion of the international (sport) federations. "We need to bring in the experts, that will take in a little bit of time. We need to bring in the (sport federations) so we have full buy-in to try and come up with cohesion on this specific topic." Coventry is naïve if she thinks there will ever be cohesion on this. The people howling for "fairness" will accept nothing less than the complete exclusion of transgender women, from sports and in society. That is awful enough. But if you think this won't harm all women, you must have missedthe debacle in boxing at the Paris Olympics. For those who missed it in biology class, gender is not black and white. There are women with three X chromosomes. There are women missing one of the X chromosomes. There are women who have XY chromosomes but female reproductive systems. There are women who have naturally higher levels of testosterone and androgen. There also are women who have external female genitalia and internal male reproductive organs — some of whom might not even know it! Then there are the disingenuous folks who already have and will continue to use a white, heteronormative notion of what a woman is to remove anyone who falls outside it. A female athlete who is masculine presenting and has short hair? She'd better be ready to prove her womanhood. It's demeaning, it's humiliating and it's wholly unnecessary. Even track and field's solution of using cheek swabs to weed out those who aren't woman enough to meet their criteria is a form of discrimination, a requirement male athletes aren't subjected to. This transgender paranoia is just that, paranoia. Might a transgender athlete wind up on a podium some day? Sure. Just as will a woman whose parents are millionaires and could afford to give her the best in private coaching, strength training and nutrition from the time she could walk. Or a woman who has an inordinately long wingspan and superior lung capacity. But we don't tar and feather those women. We celebrate them. The beauty of sports, the whole purpose of the Olympics, is for athletes to test themselves, mentally and physically. To strive for the best versions of themselves while also learning valuable life lessons about commitment, resilience and cooperation. Yet the IOC appears ready to join the chorus of those who want to make those opportunities off-limits to transgender people, simply because of who they are. "It was very clear from the membership that the discussion around this has to be done with scientific approaches and scientific and medical research at the core so that we are looking at the facts and the nuances," Coventry said. The facts and the nuances are that the IOC already had protocols for transgender participation and they worked just fine for two decades. But that was never going to be good enough for the braying mob, and Coventry and the IOC appear to have decided that sacrificing transgender athletes is a small price to pay for making that headache go away. Will Jake Paul get title shot? Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight next step in boxing journeyNew Foto - Will Jake Paul get title shot? Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight next step in boxing journey

Jake Paul's right hand deserves attention and respect. He has used it to knock out seven men inside the boxing ring. And Paul says he'll use it to knock out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the first round oftheir cruiserweight fightSaturday, June 28 in Anaheim, California. Yet once again, Paul's skills outside the ring are proving to be just as important as his powerful right hand during his quest to win a world title. About six months after beating 58-year-old Mike Tyson, Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) will be stepping into the ring against the 39-year-old Chavez (54-6-1, 34 KOs), who appears to be long beyond his prime but still is the son of legendary Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. "I like big names,'' Paul said at his final press conference with Chavez Jr. before their bout. "I like legendary names. And he's on my path to world championship.'' The path isno fantasy. Oscar De La Hoya, the Hall of Fame boxer, this week told reporters, "I think (Paul) can win a world title.'' Paul, who embarked on his pro career in 2020, has said he's already been in talks for a world title shot in 2026. And what about Chavez? The upcoming fight fits into a pattern that has highlighted Paul's youth. Chavez will become the eighth opponent who was at least 10 years older than Paul, 28, at the time of their fight. (Tyron Woodley, who fought Paul twice, was also 39 during each of those bouts.) Paul was eight years younger than two other opponents. His only loss came against Tommy Fury, who was 23 when he beat Paul by split decision in 2023. Paul was 26. Though Paul has called his fight against Chavez "a very, very tough test,'' the oddsmakers disagree. Paul enters his fight against Chavez as a consensus -750 favorite, meaning bettors must wager $750 on Paul to collect $100 if he wins. In 13 fights, Paul has yet to select an opponent who oddsmakers have deemed the favorite. Names like Tyson and Chavez, coupled with Paul's own star power, have created lucrative opportunities as Paul sharpens his skills and chases his title dreams. Promoter Kathy Duva said it's obvious why Paul says he likes big names. "He needs 'names' to sell his fights,'' Duva said. "At some point, one is simply too old to box effectively. So he chooses (fighters who) are past it and counts on the public to react to 'names' they recognize without realizing that they are now too old to be competitive. "Paul has taken the long-established strategy of testing a young fighter against a well-known veteran in a crossroads fight to a stratospheric new level! Chavez couldn't even fight when he was young, but he does have his father's name. So I guess he fits the profile.'' Paul said he was in negotiations with Canelo Alvarez, which would suggest Paul was willing to take a risk against a far more accomplished fighter. But Duva dismissed the narrative. "I think he's smart enough to know that Canelo wouldn't involve himself in such a circus,'' Duva said, adding that it amounted to the "Hold Me Back'' tradition reserved for press conferences and weigh-ins. That said, Duva is among those who think Paul could fight for a title. "I wouldn't ever rule it out,'' she said. "Not as long as there is a sanctioning body out there willing to collect its fee. Another longstanding boxing fact of life.'' Teddy Atlas, the boxing analyst and retired trainer, considered Paul's path to 11-1 and a potential title fight. "Let's be honest here,'' Atlas told USA TODAY Sports. "I mean, really honest.'' Atlas said Paul's celebrity and ability to guarantee sizable purses for his opponents allow him to "handpick'' boxers. He also said Paul has nothing to apologize for. "He was creative, he was smart, he was opportunistic,'' Atlas said. Paul has boxed four MMA fighters, one retired NBA player, a YouTuber and Iron Mike. Next up: the son of legendary Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. "They worked hard,'' Atlas said of Paul's team. "They take risks. They're in the tough business. He worked hard to build what he built. "I know he hasn't taken the risk of other fighters (who) have been taking the conventional route. But he's still taking a risk.'' Robert Garcia, The Ring's 2024 Trainer of the Year, voiced support for Paul's path. It has been charted in part by Nakisa Bidarian, Paul's business partner and manager. "He's doing exactly what every manager and promoter does at the beginning of a fighter's career,'' Garcia told USA TODAY Sports. "He only has (12) fights. He's actually doing better than a lot of prospects that had (hundreds) of amateur fights." Trainer Johnathon Banks, a former world cruiserweight champion, lauded Paul and older brother Logan Paul, who boxed Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition bout and since has emerged as a WWE star. "Whether it's wrestling or boxing, they putting on big shows and doing big numbers and they just taking everything by storm,'' Banks said.
