LAS VEGAS (AP) — No trash talk necessary. That was Friday's message from Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez, both complimentary of one another while downplaying a shoving incident in New York earlier this month during the media tour for their blockbuster match on Sept. 13 at Allegiant Stadium. The fight for the unified super middleweight championship is part of Alvarez's reported $400 million, minimum four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. "You can see how big is this fight," Alvarez said inside of a crammed dressing room at T-Mobile Arena before the official press conference began in front of thousands of fans. "I'm glad to be involved in these big fights. And you know, Crawford is one of the best fighters in the last decade, and I'm glad to be here. "These big fights don't need to talk (expletive) about each other. That's what I think." Crawford, meanwhile, addressed why he pushed Alvarez in New York, saying he "heard some things (he) didn't like," but took the high road in sharing his excitement for what will be the biggest fight of his career. "I don't even know the last time I've been this excited for a fight," said Crawford, who held court with media members in the bowels of the arena on a loading dock. "September 13, it's going to be a great night of boxing." Friday marked the final stop of a three-city tour to market the event, which saw cooler heads prevailduring the faceoffat T-Mobile Arena. Riyadh Season is working with UFC CEO Dana White to promote the fight, which supplanted UNLV football's home opener against Idaho State. Earlier in the day, UNLV announced the game would shift to August 23, with first-year coach Dan Mullen making his program debut in what is now the Rebels' season-opener in Week 0. "The World Championship Boxing Match is important to Las Vegas, and the impact it will have on tourism is unmatched," UNLV's director of athletics Erick Harper said in a statement. The long-awaited showdown between two of the greatest boxers since the turn of the century will be the first combat event inside the home of the NFL's Raiders. "Listen, this is the one," Crawford said. "God don't make no mistakes. It's the reason why he waited all this time to put me on this stage with another all-time great like Canelo. "Two Hall of Famers going head to head in one of the biggest events in the last 20 years. I'm looking forward to it." It'sWhite's first venture into boxing,and quite a statement in becoming a major player in the sport. Alvarez (63-2-2) unified the division with a unanimous decision victory over William Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 3, with Crawford (41-0) in attendance. Crawford said it's been a longtime coming, and the jump to 168 pounds to meet Canelo has been on his mind since moving from 147 to 154 pounds. "I don't think any fighter has went from 147 to 168 to fight pound-for-pound a top five fighter like Canelo in the history of the sport of boxing," Crawford said. "Everything impressed me about Canelo. I'm a big Canelo fan. "This is business. Like I said in the last press conference, I'm coming to take everything you got." Said Alvarez: "He's a good fighter. He have everything. He's a complete fighter. He have a large experience. He's a great fighter. I never underestimate my opponents. I always train like I'm gonna fight Mike Tyson in his era. Growing up on Long Island, James Hagenswanted nothing more than to be selected by the team he grew up rooting for, the New York Islanders. Though that dream failed to materialize at the NHL draft on Friday night, the 18-year-old Boston College center was more than happy with the consolation. Hagens is not only staying in Boston, after being selected seventh overall by the Bruins, he enjoyed the extra bonus of having his name announced by Adam Sandler. "Just being on a team that wants you the most, I love Boston. I love the area," he said after becoming the first U.S.-born player taken in the draft. "It's so special to have Adam Sandler make that pick. It's something I'll never forget for the rest of my life." It just so happens that Hagens lists his favorite movie as "Happy Gilmore," which features Sandler as a former hockey player who turns his attention to golf. Wearing a Bruins jersey, Sandler announced the pick on a video screen on the draft stage inside the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. As Hagens made his way up the aisle, Sandler could be seen celebrating on screen in the background. Sandler was one of numerous celebrities to introduce teams' selections with the NHL going to a decentralized draft format in which its 32 franchises made their picks from their own markets. That's different from the past, when all teams gathered inside the same facility to make their picks. At 5-foot-11,Hagens had 11 goals and 26 assists to finish fourth in points among college freshmen last season. He scored five goals for America's gold medal-winning team at the world juniors championships. The Islanders had the first pick, andselected defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Down on the farm Chores came first for Brady Martin in electing to spend the NHL draft with his family and friends at his southern Ontario farm rather than attend the event in Los Angeles. "There's still work to do with the animals and stuff," the Ontario Hockey League center said after being selected fifth overall by the Nashville Predators. One reason for his decision to stay home was the NHL moving to a decentralized draft format. "I just decided I could have more people with me here for the journey I've been on," Martin said. "If I really had to, I would've gone to the draft. ... I just wanted to be at home with friends and family. And, yeah, family comes first." The 6-foot, 180-pound player had 33 goals and 72 points in 57 games in his second season with the Soo Greyhounds. He was selected well ahead of projections, after being ranked 11th among North American skaters by NHL central scouting. Martin believes he'll be a great fit in Nashville and Tennessee, which features a diverse range of farming. "I think the qualities of being a farmer just helps you a lot, the discipline, the responsibilities, everything. It translated to hockey," Martin said, explaining his chores include taking care of the dairy and beef cows, and chickens. "Anything that my father asks of me, I guess, just trying to get the hang of things," Martin said, before breaking into a smile. "Yeah, growing up and learning. I had to have a little bit of a backup plan if hockey were to go sideways, I guess." Finally, a trade The first 11 picks in the draft went by without any movement. Then, Commissioner Gary Bettman asked Kris Letang's son, Alex, to press the red button that brought "Trade Alert" up on video screens. The Pittsburgh Penguins traded No. 12, which the New York Rangers transferred to them earlier in the week to complete the J.T. Arizona governor approves up to $500M in taxpayer funds to upgrade home of Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signed legislation Friday that funds up to $500 million inrenovations to Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The bill, which won bipartisan support in both of the state's GOP-controlled chambers, will use sales tax revenue from the stadium and nearby buildings for infrastructure upgrades over the next 30 years, including improvements to air conditioning systems and the stadium's retractable roof. The team said it will also contribute $250 million for the renovations at the stadium, which is located in downtown Phoenix and is surrounded by small businesses and restaurants that see a boost of activity during the baseball season. The legislation is one of a handful of bipartisan deals that Hobbs, a Democrat, prioritized negotiating during the session. She says the funding is a responsible use of taxpayer dollars, will provide good-paying jobs and ensure the Diamondbacks do not leave Phoenix. Attendance at games has increased since the team's 2023 run to the World Series, where the Diamondbacks lost to the Texas Rangers. This season they are averaging 31,420 fans per game — the highest in two decades. "I'm not going to let Arizona lose the Diamondbacks," Hobbs said Friday on the social platform X. Derrick Hall, president and CEO of the Diamondbacks, praised the governor and said the team will now turn its attention to extending its lease with Maricopa County. The bill cleared the Legislature June 23 after months of debate that included the question of whether the Diamondbacks could potentially leave unless a public funding deal was reached. Other MLB teams have threatened to leave host cities if they did not get public financing. The Oakland A's, for example, complained for years about the Oakland Coliseum and an inability to gain government assistance for a new ballpark. Now the team is bound for Las Vegas, where a groundbreaking ceremony was held this month for a $1.75 billion ballpark that is expected to be completed in time for the 2028 season. Nevada and Clark County approved up to$380 millionin public funds for the project. And last year voters in Jackson County, Missouri, rejected an attempt toextend a sales taxthat would have helped fund a ballpark for the Kansas City Royals and stadium renovations for theKansas City Chiefs. Lawmakers in Kansas are trying to lure the teams with government subsidies, andMissouriis trying to keep them with its own financial incentives. The Diamondbacks have spent nearly three decades in their downtown ballpark, which is owned by the Maricopa County Stadium District. In 2017, the team sued the districtover funding for repairsand sought toremove a contractual clausepreventing the team from looking into other stadium options. A perennial problem has been the park's air conditioning system and its ability to keep it cool in triple-digit summer heat, Hall said. Fans of country music star Morgan Wallen bemoaned the heat at a concert there last July, despite the retractable roof being closed. Concession stands ran out of water, and some people simply left. Chase Field was one of the first MLB stadiums to have a retractable roof. Now seven out of the 30 teams play under one, including the Brewers, Blue Jays, Rangers, Marlins, Astros and Mariners. Chase Field also has a small swimming pool in right field, one of its most recognizable features. The funding from the Legislature will not mean upgrades to the pool or to stadium suites, the latter of which was a sticking point for Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. She got on board after the bill was updated to prevent funds from being used for suites and a cap was placed on how much money the city would contribute for a land deal should the Diamondbacks break from the Stadium District, according to Gallego chief of staff Seth Scott. Hobbs is running for reelection, and while it's too early to say whether the Diamondbacks funding will be part of her campaign messaging, it's another bipartisan win, her communications director Michael Beyer said. Democratic state Sen. Mitzi Epstein, who voted against the funding, said Hobbs' support for the bill was wrong and hurtful for Arizonans. New name, same thrills await drivers in return to Atlanta

Fans looking at this week's race schedule might be confused and do a double-take: It's not called Atlanta Motor Speedway anymore. For the first time on the 2025 schedule, the NASCAR Cup Series makes a repeat appearance, stopping Saturday night for the second time at the newly renamed EchoPark Speedway for the Quaker State 400 in Hampton, Ga. While AMS is technically no more, the expectations are still as high as ever at the 1.54-mile oval south of Atlanta, where the best racing in the sport has taken place over the past few seasons with the Next Gen car -- somewhat surprising considering the car's struggles. Complaints about the car echo from race to race. Drivers bemoan the inability to make a pass in "dirty air" once they make a run on the car in front of them. The short tracks, previously a staple of anticipation and excitement in Virginia and Tennessee, have yielded some of the worst showings, almost unimaginable considering an action-packed ticket for Bristol or Richmond races used to be among the most in-demand purchases. Road courses with the current car have produced a wild card, as road courses are prone to do. However, Shane van Gisbergen's nearly 17-second annihilation of the field in his recent Mexico City triumph will not find its way into the season's highlights package. While the racing had its ups and downs at Pocono last weekend, it was odd that winner Chase Briscoe, desperately conserving fuel while leading in his No. 19 Toyota, was able to keep Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin at bay as his No. 11 ride hounded him. Hamlin said he felt the only chance he had to win his second straight start -- he missed Mexico -- and fourth this season was to run as hard as he could, force the Indiana driver to push hard and thus use up his fuel before getting to the checkers. "He was lifting early into (Turn) 1 ... balance wise, I just couldn't get my car to handle good enough in that dirty air to keep him honest," said Hamlin, owner of a Pocono-best seven wins. "The key moment was when (Briscoe) and like three or four others pitted and that caution came out. It leaped them in front of us. "At that point, we knew it was going to be really hard to pass those guys back on the racetrack." The phrase "really hard to pass" is all too frequent in postrace interviews, but the Next Gen car puts on its best showings at drafting tracks like Atlanta, Daytona and Talladega. That was evident in February when Christopher Bell grabbed the first of three consecutive wins with a thrilling, three-wide victory under caution over Carson Hocevar and Kyle Larson at the Georgia superspeedway. Four of the past seven races at the oval have ended under caution, a testimony to how tight the racing gets at the end as drivers push to the ragged edge. The track formerly known as Atlanta Motor Speedway may now go by another name, but luckily the racing remains the same. With lightning near the track Friday afternoon, the series shortened the qualifying session to just one round, and the Ford drivers, led by Joey Logano, took advantage of it. A two-time Atlanta winner, Logano won his 32nd career Busch Light Pole Award by blistering the track at 178.960 mph, tying him with Wood Brothers Racing driver Josh Berry, who will start on Row 1 beside him following a tiebreaker. Ryan Blaney, Austin Cindric and Ryan Preece rounded out the top five as blue oval drivers earned the top eight qualifying positions, with Alex Bowman's No. 48 Chevrolet the first non-Ford in ninth. --Field Level Media

Matthew Goode recently appeared on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast and clarified rumors about him auditioning for James Bond. Before Daniel Craig was cast in 2006's "Casino Royale," a handful of actors such as Henry Cavill, Rupert Friend and Sam Worthington all went out for the part. But Goode, a relative newcomer at the time with credits like the Mandy Moore rom-com "Chasing Liberty" and Woody Allen's "Match Point" under his belt, never got to actually audition because he bombed his meeting with 007 franchise producer Barbara Broccoli. "I didn't audition. I went in and met Barbara [Broccoli]," Goode said. "It was quite a funny one because — and she's gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person — she was like, 'So what's your idea for Bond?' And I was like, 'My idea for Bond. We've gotta take it back to the books, you know? Really, we absolutely have to make this guy an alcoholic, a drug addict. He hates himself. He hates women. He hates a lot of people. He's in deep pain. He's brilliant at killing people.'"Goode continued, "I think by the end of the interview, she was like, 'Mhmm. Next.' Craig was ultimately chosen, kick-starting a new Bond era on the big screen that would reach an all-time franchise high with 2012's "Skyfall" ($1.1 billion grossed worldwide). Craig exited 007 in 2021's "No Time to Die." Broccoli and co-producer Michael G. Wilson are no longer running the Bond franchise after they sold creative rights to Amazon MGM Studios earlier this year. Amazon recently announced that Denis Villeneuve will direct the next 007 movie, although no actor is currently attached to play Bond. In a new report fromVariety, insiders said that Amazon is seeking a British actor under the age of 30 for to assume the 007 mantle. Per the report: "Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland and Harris Dickinson are at the top of the list. Elordi is Australian, but that would not be a deal-breaker as far as Amazon is concerned; remember Aussie George Lazenby starred in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service.'" The New York Mets announced that starting pitcher Griffin Canning suffered a ruptured Achilles on Thursday night. Canning was placed on the 60-day injured list on Friday and faces a lengthy recovery. It is the same injury that affected NBA stars Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton during the playoffs. On Thursday, Canning threw a pitch to Atlanta's Nick Allen, who grounded out to shortstop Francisco Lindor. Planting his leg to run to back up third base, Canning crumpled to the ground and held his left leg in the air. Mets catcher Luis Torrens waved for the training staff and manager Carlos Mendoza to attend to him, and they had to help Canning off the field. The right-hander pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and fanning three with no walks. In his first season with the Mets following five with the Los Angeles Angels, Canning was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts. New York made a number of other transactions along with Canning's move to the IL. The Mets recalled right-hander Blade Tidwell and selected left-hander Colin Poche from Triple-A Syracuse. They optioned right-hander Austin Warren and infielder Jared Young to Syracuse, and left-hander Dicky Lovelady elected free agency after declining an outright assignment to Triple-A. The Mets also reinstated infielder Mark Vientos from the 10-day IL. Vientos last played June 2 before going on the injured list with a hamstring strain. He is in the Mets' lineup for Friday's game at the Pittsburgh Pirates, batting sixth as the designated hitter. Finally, the Mets signed outfielder Jose Azocar to a minor league deal and sent him to Syracuse. Azocar began the season with New York, playing 12 games for the major league club; after being granted free agency, he saw action in two games for the Atlanta Braves, then was granted free agency again June 18. --Field Level Media

Cooper Flaggwill give the world its first sneak peek at his NBA career when the Dallas Mavericks face off against the Los Angeles Lakers on July 10 in the league's annual Las Vegas Summer League. When that happens, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd wants hisNo. 1 overall pickrunning the show. "I'm excited about giving him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens," Kidd said Friday during Flagg's introductory news conference in Dallas. "Let's get it started, right off the bat." Flagg is a do-it-all forward, the 6-foot-9 kind who led a 35-win Duke team in all five major statistical categories as a freshman this past season. While earningNaismith National Player of the Year honors, he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. The Maine native was the main event at this year's NBA Draft, as he became theyoungest draftee to go first overall since LeBron James in 2003. But Kidd is struck by Flagg's maturity. "Just sitting here listening to him, isn't it incredible?" Kidd said Friday. "I mean, we're talking about an 18-year-old who has all the right answers and is talking about working out after this. But when you talk about his gift, he's a basketball player. And he's a winner." Flagg is poised to keep winning games in bunches at the NBA level, and that's an opportunity few No. 1 overall picks have enjoyed in their first seasons in the league. Even though theMavericks had a mere 1.8% chance of winning this year's NBA Draft Lottery, they scored the No. 1 pick. In the process, Dallas — which saw its injury-riddled 2024-25 season end in the Western Conference's final play-in game — became the fourth-longest shot to ever win the draft lottery. In other words, a year removed from making the NBA Finals, and months after sending shockwaves throughout the leaguewhen they traded now-former franchise centerpiece Luka Dončić to the Lakers, the Mavericks snuck into the lottery and came out with the top pick. As expected, that pick became Flagg, who eventually will be joined by the likes of Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson. Those three are all at least 32 years old, but they have a combined six NBA championships and 24 All-Star appearances. "I think it's a blessing," Flagg said. "A lot of people in this position or this situation aren't granted this opportunity. So I just feel really blessed and grateful for the situation I've been given." He continued: "I'm just looking forward to being a sponge. Just getting down here, I'm excited to just learn, soak it all in and learn from the guys that are older and have been through it all before." Kidd was also drafted by the Mavericks, but back in 1994 when Dallas had the No. 2 overall pick after a 13-69 season. The now-fifth-year Mavericks head coach reflected on his own rookie season Friday, noting how he didn't have as many veterans to lean on at the time. No player on Dallas' 1994-95 roster had more than six years of NBA experience at the start of that season, according to Sports Reference. Experience is one thing, a collection of Hall of Fame résumés is another. Flagg is surrounded by both. "He's very lucky to have veterans, future Hall of Famers," Kidd said. "When you talk about Ky and Klay and then AD, just understanding the vets are going to protect him and help him. And they're going to push him." Kidd added: "So I think when he's stepping into this situation, there's no better situation for him to learn the game, on and off the floor." Even with all of that talent at his side, Flagg isn't expected to take a back seat. Kidd wants him to do a bit of everything. "I think it's a versatile position, doing a lot of different things," Flagg said, when asked about where on the court he'll be playing. "With the team, looking at the roster, we can play a really good brand of positionless basketball with a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things. I think that would be one of [our] biggest strengths, and I think just trying to play to that and just doing whatever I can to help the team win." Kidd said Flagg answered that question perfectly. "Because I don't look at the position," Kidd said. The former 10-time All-Star point guard went on: "I want to put him at the point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts, being able to run the show." Kidd acknowledged he'll have Flagg play the 2 and the 3 as well, and it's reasonable to expect him to spend some time at the 4. Those positions, though, are comfortable for Flagg, Kidd pointed out. "We want to push," Kidd said of Flagg playing some point guard. "And I think he's going to respond in a positive way. It's all right to fail. It's all right to turn the ball over. We've talked about that." The first season of Kidd's four-year stint as the Milwaukee Bucks' head coach was forward Giannis Antetokounmpo's second season in the NBA. Kidd recalled Antetokounmpo — now a nine-time All-Star and one-time NBA champion — failing when he was first given a chance to run point. "But he wanted to come back and have the ball," Kidd said of a young Antetokounmpo. Kidd is confident Flagg will be the same way.
