There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solvetoday's puzzlebefore reading further!Food Festival Lineup Constructor:Will Eisenberg Editor:Amanda Rafkin Will:This puzzle was originally titled "Combo Meal". I still like the title, but it does rely on the solver knowing that a band can also be called a 'combo', which is a little tricky. It was really fun to combine my love of music and food in one puzzle! I think the genesis of the theme was trying to get GOOEYBUTTERCAKE into a puzzle--a St. Louis specialty that I think is delicious enough to become a national hit. Happy birthday, Shannon! SUV (31A: Honda Prologue, e.g.) I know very little about cars, so although I recognized Honda and knew this was some sort of vehicle, I relied on crossing answers to let me know that the Honda Prologue is an SUV (sports utility vehicle). When I looked up the Honda Prologue, I discovered that it's an electric vehicle and it was first produced in 2024. KIA (40A: ___ ora (Maori greeting)) Māori is the language of the Māori people, the indigenous people of mainland New Zealand. KIA ora is a Māori greeting that has a literal translation of "have life" or "be healthy." Since the series is about the movie industry, many scenes occur on SET. OWL (11A: Duolingo's mascot, for one) Duolingo is a language teaching app whose mascot is a green cartoon OWL named Duo Keyshauna Renee Lingo, commonly known as Duo. In February of this year, as a publicity stunt, Duolingo announced that Duo had been hit by a Tesla Cybertruck and had died. LIME (21A: Kaffir ___ leaves (ingredients in Thai cuisine)) Kaffir LIME is a citrus fruit native to Southeast Asia. The crushed leaves, which are used in Thai cuisine (as the clue notes) give off an intense citrus fragrance. KOALA (22A: Eucalyptus eater) The KOALA is native to Australia and is mostly found in woodlands where its diet consists of the leaves of eucalyptus trees. GOOEY BUTTER CAKE (55A: Signature St. Louis dessert)GOOEY BUTTER CAKEoriginated in St. Louis Missouri in the 1930s or 1940s (the origin is contested). The name appropriately describes this rich, decadent dessert. I must say that GOOEY BUTTER CAKE is delicious. My husband is especially fond of it. ALEX (2D: Alternative to Xander) ALEX and Xander are nicknames for Alexander. TACO (4D: Bit of food truck fare) This feels like a bonus answer. What would a festival be without a TACO truck? ASH (5D: Ketchum who became a Pokemon World Champion in 2022) ASH Ketchum was the protagonist of thePokémonanime series for its first 25 seasons. Pikachu was his first Pokémon. ASH became a Pokémon World Champion inPokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series. SKELETON KEY (6D: It'll open many doors for you) This is a fun clue! A SKELETON KEY is a type of master KEY that will literally open many doors. CHAMP (7D: Victor, for short) My first thought here was VIC, particularly following the ALEX / Xander clue. However, Victor here is not a name, but a synonym of champion – CHAMP, for short. RUNE (8D: Character on a fantasy map) A RUNE is a character used in Germanic alphabets from the third to the thirteenth centuries. Many fantasy maps feature RUNEs. PELE (54D: Brazilian soccer legend) PELÉ (1940-2022) is considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time. During his career, PELÉ averaged a goal per game. PEACHES AND CREAM (17A: Southern summer dessert) GLUTEN-FREE BREAD (36A: Celiac-friendly loaf) GOOEY BUTTER CAKE (55A: Signature St. Louis dessert) FOOD FESTIVAL LINEUP: Each theme answer is a FOOD item in which the last word is the name of a band: CREAM, BREAD, and CAKE. In today's crossword FESTIVAL, the bands CREAM, BREAD, and CAKE are the headliners. Sounds delicious! Unfortunately, this LINEUP is only going to happen in a crossword, as these bands were not all active at the same time. It is nice that we have multiple decades represented: CREAM from the 1960s, BREAD from the 1970s, and CAKE from the 1990s to the present. CAKE is the only one of these bands that is still active. I enjoyed the combination of food and music in this theme. Thank you, Will, for this enjoyable puzzle. Beloved '80s Actress Disappeared from Hollywood for 20 Years — 'I Was a Star'originally appeared onParade. One of the most recognized faces in movie history suddenly vanished from Hollywood in 2002 after more than 30 years in the spotlight. After starring in iconic films likeThe ShiningandPopeye,Shelley Duvallstepped away from the film industry to pursue a quieter life. At the time, Duvall reportedly cited her brother's spinal cancer diagnosis as one reason for moving away, choosing to live in Texas to be closer to her family. The beloved actress remained out of the mainstream media for nearly two decades, but when she returned, she opened up about what had really been going on behind the scenes. "You didn't get paid much—just scale plus 10 percent," she toldPEOPLEin 2023. "They thought women would just marry and the husband's going to support them. But that doesn't happen for everybody." In 2024, Duvall spoke even more candidly about how public scrutiny affected her over the years. "I was a star; I had leading roles," she toldThe New York Times. "People think it's just aging, but it's not. It's violence." She had long been the target of cruel comments about her appearance, even before she stepped away from the spotlight. "How would you feel if people were really nice, and then, suddenly, on a dime" -- she snapped her fingers -- "they turn on you? You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That's why you get hurt, because you can't really believe it's true," she explained. Despite a career filled with memorable roles, Duvall's time in the industry came with a heavy personal cost. While filmingStanley Kubrick'sThe Shining, she was subjected to grueling conditions on set. Kubrick reportedly isolated her and forced her to endure exhausting takes — most infamously, the iconic baseball bat scene, which she had to film 127 times. "Stanley pushed me very hard, and the psychological abuse was extreme. I cried for hours every day. It was exhausting," she recalled in a 2016Dr. Philinterview. Still, Duvall never regretted the experience. "I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Why? Because of Stanley. It was a fascinating learning experience—such intense work that I think it makes you smarter. But I wouldn't want to go through it again." AfterThe Shining, she continued acting in the '80s, appearing in films likePopeyealongsideRobin WilliamsandTime BanditsbyTerry Gilliam. She also branched into television, with roles inL.A. Law,Frasier, Aaahh!!! Real MonstersandWishbone. Though she retired in 2002, Duvall always dreamed of returning to the screen. That wish came true in 2023 when she starred in the indie horror filmThe Forest Hills— her first movie in over 20 years. In that same PEOPLE interview, she expressed hope for her future in acting. "[Jessica Tandy] won an Oscar when she was 80. I can still win," she said. Sadly, Duvall passed away the following year, on July 11, 2024, due to complications from diabetes. Judge's 33rd homer, double play started by Bellinger leads Yankees over Mets, stopping 6-game slideNew Foto - Judge's 33rd homer, double play started by Bellinger leads Yankees over Mets, stopping 6-game slide

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit his 33rd home run, left fielder Cody Bellinger started a pivotal double play and the New York Yankees stopped a six-game losing streak by beating the Mets 6-4 Sunday to avoid a weekend Subway Series sweep. All-Star Max Fried (11-2) improved to 9-1 in 12 starts after Yankees losses after Judge staked him to a 5-0 lead with a two-run homer in the fifth off Brandon Waddell, part of Judge's three-RBI day. After Judge's sacrifice fly restored a two-run lead in the seventh, Juan Soto hit a sinking drive that Bellinger scooped with a shoestring catch that had 30% possibility. Bellinger made a 89.9 mph throw to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt that doubled up Francisco Lindor, who didn't slide. That was the second of three double plays in consecutive innings by a Yankees defense that has been shaky of late. Hayden Senger grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth, and Judge followed with a tumbling catch on Starling Marte's liner. Goldschmidt turned an unassisted double play in the eighth, gloving Brett Baty's hard grounder, tagging Ronny Mauricio and stepping on first base. The Yankees, who tumbled from the AL East lead by losing 16 of 22 games, had matched their longest losing streak. They stopped the Mets' four-game winning streak. Austin Wells homered in the third off Zach Pop (0-1), who made his Mets debut. Francisco Lindor hit a two-run single in the fifth off Fried (11-2). Devin Williams pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected by plate umpire John Bacon after a pair of called strikes on Luis Torrens starting the inning, the first that appeared to be outside and the second that seemed low. The game ended when Lindor couldn't check his swing on a strikeout with Soto on deck. Mendoza was ejected for the second time this season, both in a nine-day span. Key Moments After Lindor's hit, Fried struck out Soto and retired Pete Alonso on a deep flyout. Key Stat Judge has 11 first-pitch homers, equaling a career high. Up Next Yankees: Rookie Will Warren (5-4, 5.02 ERA) opposes visiting Seattle and RHP Logan Gilbert (2-2, 3.40) on Tuesday nught. Mets: Clay Holmes (8-4, 2.99) faces rookie Brandon Young (0-3, 7.02 ERA) at Baltimore on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Christian Walker, Yainer Diaz and Jose Altuve each homered, Ryan Gusto threw six strong innings, and the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Sunday to complete their first three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium since May 9-11, 2008. The Astros scored the go-ahead run in the sixth when No. 9 batter Zack Short capped an eight-pitch at-bat by drawing a two-out bases-loaded walk off reliever Will Klein (1-1) for a 2-1 lead. Walker and Diaz opened the eighth with homers off Dodgers closer Tanner Scott for a 4-1 lead, and Altuve added a solo shot in the ninth off Anthony Banda, as the Astros improved to a major league-best 24-8 since June 1. Gusto (6-3) wasn't dominant, allowing one run and four hits and striking out one, but he held the top four Dodgers batters — Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Andy Pages — to two singles in 12 at-bats. Bennett Sousa, Bryan King and Bryan Abreu each threw scoreless innings of relief for Houston. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the second, an inning that began with Michael Conforto's walk and Hyeseong Kim's single. Conforto took third on Miguel Rojas' double play grounder and scored on Dalton Rushing's RBI double. Houston tied the score 1-1 in the third when Short singled, took third on Isaac Paredes' double and scored on Altuve's sacrifice fly, a ball that Dodgers right fielder Esteury Ruiz caught while leaping into the screen in foul territory. Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan, recalled from Triple-A to make his second big-league start in his return from Tommy John surgery, gave up one run and five hits in five innings, striking out four and walking one. Key moment The Dodgers threatened off reliever King in the eighth when Rushing singled and took second on Betts' two-out single, but Astros center fielder Taylor Trammell, who entered for defensive purposes in the sixth, raced in to make a sliding catch of Freeman's 104-mph liner to preserve a 4-1 lead. Key stat Walker, who entered with a major league-best 1.203 career OPS in Dodger Stadium, is batting .349 (53 for 152) with 21 homers and 38 RBIs in 45 games in Chavez Ravine. Up next Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-6, 2.51 ERA) will face Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (9-4, 2.91 ERA) Monday in Milwaukee. Astros left-hander Colton Gordon (3-1, 4.37 ERA) will face Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee (4-9, 4.20 ERA) Monday in Houston. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Brian Campbell won for the second time this year on the PGA Tour, both in a playoff, when he closed with a 4-under 67 and beat Emiliano Grillo with a par on the first extra hole Sunday in the John Deere Classic. It extended the win-or-bust season for Campbell, who won the Mexico Open in a playoff in late February. He has finished out of the top 30 every tournament except for his two victories. This one might be enough to get him into the British Open, depending on how high up he moves in the world ranking published Monday, traditionally used as the alternate list. Grillo, who also closed with a 67, took the lead when Campbell made double bogey on 15, only to three-putt for bogey on the 16th. Campbell, one of the shorter hitters on tour, blasted a 3-wood to 18 feet for a two-putt birdie on the par-5 17th and narrowly missed a 25-foot birdie on the 18th. He was the first player to post at 18-under 266. Grillo got up-and-down for birdie on the 17th, holing an 8-foot putt, and caught a bad break on the 18th when his drive settled into a divot. He hit wedge to just inside 40 feet and two-putted for par to join Campbell at 266. David Lipsky was poised to join them when he hit a punch 3-wood to 8 feet for eagle on the 17th to tie for the lead. But he hooked his drive on the 18th, couldn't reach the green, and his 15-foot par putt to get into the playoff caught the left lip and spun away. He shot 68 and tied for third with Kevin Roy (65). European tour MUNICH (AP) — Daniel Brown was in tears after winning the BMW International Open by two strokes, days after the death of a close friend. The No. 170-ranked Brown shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 in the final round to capture his second European tour title, after the ISPS Handa World Invitational in 2023. It was his first top 10 since February. After making his sixth and final birdie of the day at the par-5 18th, Brown walked off the green and started to cry. The Englishman said a close friend died last weekend and that was his motivation to win at Golfclub München Eichenried. Brown started the day with a one-shot lead over Jordan Smith (67), birdied four of his first six holes, and picked up two more birdies coming home to finish on 22-under par for the week. Ladies European Tour MAYNOOTH, Ireland (AP) — Lottie Woad of England became the first amateur in three years to win a Ladies European Tour title, closing with a 4-under 69 for a six-shot victory in the Women's Irish Open. Woad, the world No. 1 amateur, entered the final round with a seven-stroke lead. The 21-year-old Woad just completed her junior year at Florida State and won the Augusta National Women's Amateur in 2023. She finished at 21-under par, six shots ahead of Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden. The last amateur winner of an LET event was Jana Melichova in the 2022 Czech Ladies Open. Other tours Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe closed with a 3-under 70 for a four-shot victory over Danthai Boonma in the International Series Morocco on the Asian Tour. ... Maximilian Steinlechner of Austria won his first Challenge Tour title when he closed with a 5-under 69 for a two-shot victory over Filippo Celli of Italy in the Interwetten Open. ... Hyejun Park closed with a 2-under 70 for a one-shot victory over Seunghui Ro in the Lotte Open on the Korea LPGA. ... "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" television series in the works told from Chief Bromden's point of view

United Artists/Getty After solidifying its place as a film and literary classic,One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nestcould soon be coming to the small screen. Paul Zaentz, the nephew of producer Saul Zaentz — who helped bring the beloved 1975 movie version of Ken Kesey's acclaimed novel to life — is working on a series adaptation of it, he has confirmed toEntertainment Weekly. Zaentz recently unveiled plans for a television adaptation during a visit to the filmmaking podcastCK Café. "I just signed an agreement with Ken Kesey's widow and family to develop a television series, where we will do it through the point of view of Chief for the first season," Zaentz said on the show. "After the first season will be what happens to Chief after he escapes [from the hospital]." Zaentz went on to say that the appeal of the new TV project is telling the story "from a totally different point of view." No showrunners or writers are attached to the project yet. Based on the 1962 novel by Kesey, the film starredJack Nicholsonas a rebellious convict sent to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation, where he encourages his docile companions to take more control of their lives and defy the tyrannical head nurse of the mental institution, Nurse Ratched (played byLouise Fletcher). United Artists/Getty Though the movie received widespread critical acclaim and picked up five major Academy Awards — Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (for Nicholson), Best Actress (for Fletcher), and Best Screenplay — Kesey famously disavowed the adaptation because it diverged from his novel, which was told from the perspective of Chief Bromden, a.k.a. Chief. Will Sampson portrayed the towering half–Native American patient in the Miloš Forman–directed film, a character who transforms from a passive observer into a rebel in his own right. But the adaptation primarily revolved around Nicholson's character, Randle Patrick "R.P." McMurphy. "Ken Kesey was not happy," Zaentz said of the author's response to the film onCK Café."He claims he hated the film, but he also says he never saw the film." As for the producer's stance, he is typically wary of remakes but sees potential in adapting the story for a new format. "What I really despise about remakes is when a person remakes a classic movie," Zaentz said. "I mean, why would you redo a classic film scene by scene? If there was a film that had a great concept but was a terrible film, then remake that one. But don't remakePsycho." Zaentz added that remakingOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nestas a TV series would create room for "more character development, introducing more characters, and more subplots." Want more movie news? The producer echoed this perspective during a press conference at the 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic this weekend, where he also addressed his plans for the series, perTheHollywood Reporter. "Over the last 50 years, there have been hundreds of calls from studios, directors, and producers who want to remake the movie, and we would never allow it to be remade if they were just going to do it as Miloš made it," Zaentz told reporters. "It would be a dishonor." He went on to describe his vision for the show's arc, in which McMurphy would die at the end of the first season and the second season would extend beyond Kesey's book to explore Chief's life after his escape from the hospital.
