Heat, Clippers, Jazz trade grades: L.A. gets more size ... and Miami remains MiamiNew Foto - Heat, Clippers, Jazz trade grades: L.A. gets more size ... and Miami remains Miami

It's summer and time to chill for most, but three NBA teams had some business to tend to. Yes, we have a trade, folks. The Miami Heat, Utah Jazz, and Los Angeles Clippers are shuffling around pieces, so let's get into which pieces and why they were shuffled. Heat give up:Kevin Love, Kyle AndersonHeat get:Norman Powell Sigh. All right, Pat Riley. You don't want to rebuild, we get it. Heat culture! Winning! No tanking! It's all very, very adorable, but this Powell acquisition — which is a very strong return — runs the risk of Miami further indulging itself in what feels like an inevitable burnout. The move itself, in a vacuum, is almost unrealistically good, but the needle hasn't been moved enough in the direction of building championship equity. Powell (21.8 points, 41.8 3FG%) is a shooting guard who, well, very much plays the role of a traditional shooting guard. He isn't much of a playmaker (2.1 assists), is physically small (6-foot-3) and his play overlaps quite a bit with Tyler Herro. This isn't meant as criticism of Powell, who is frankly worth everyone's time, but more so confusion at how Miami sees the fit. What's the plan here, outside of maintaining "Heat Culture," which is basically the same culture as everyone else? At some point, it'd be nice to hear from the Heat how they envision themselves both this season and in the future. This deal has to be graded in two segments. Sorry, there is no other way. Return on value:A+"What are we doing?" direction:C- Clippers give up:Norman Powell, 2027 second-round pickClippers get:John Collins With James Harden still on the team, finding legitimate lob threats is always of interest, even if Ivica Zubac and Derrick Jones Jr. are on the roster. Collins is a bit more than just a lob-catcher, though. He averaged 19 points and 8.2 rebounds and posted damn-near 53/40/85 shooting splits this past season. Collins has divided waters for years now. Some argue his impact is limited, others that his defense is the problem, and then there are some who don't see him as much of a problem at all. I'm in the latter camp, because one has to judge Collins for what he is, not for what he isn't. For over half a decade, and before he even signed his second contract, it's been known what type of player he is. Collins is a scoring 4 who doesn't have the positional fluidity to play center for defensive purposes. But what he does give you is quality rebounding and a legitimate inside-outside option to play off your main playmaker. If you accept the parameters of what he is, there's a frighteningly good player in there, even if that player comes with the recipe of having specific archetypes on the roster to optimize him. Fortunately, the Clippers have that recipe. Collins could see his game grow, significantly, next to Harden. I'd like to give this a big, juicy grade, but the loss of Powell isn't insignificant. We have to bake that in. Grade:B (Now, if Bradley Beal ends up getting bought out of Phoenix and slides right into Powell's old spot, then we can certainly revisit this grade.) Jazz give up:John CollinsJazz get:Kyle Anderson, Kevin Love, 2027 Clippers second-round pick Hello, darkness, my old friend ... I'm just going to say it. If you give up John Collins, and you take back a return that has the same value as unwashed trousers, then it's always about the money. And look, it makes sense. The Jazz also want to clear the roster a bit to make room for Ace Bailey to take a million shots. This does achieve that, in addition to shaving off roughly $13 million for this season. Even so, it's amazing we've gotten to this point where a player like Collins, who does produce at a high level, is efficient and does offer big-man elements such as screen-setting and rebounding, is simply left out in the dust when it comes to trade value. You'd think — probably hope — a player of his caliber could return a better haul, but apparently that's become a ridiculous notion based off reasons that seem half-baked. As such, it means Utah spent two years trying to build up Collins' value, only to take back —gestures disappointingly— this. Ugh. It's not Utah's fault the market seems to have overcorrected on productive in-prime but not quite All-Star-level players, but unfortunately we have to judge the Jazz off the return, which isn't pretty. Grade:C- (Though, if the ripple effects of this deal lead to superstardom for Bailey, a new assessment will gladly be booked by yours truly.)

Sounders GK Stefan Frei 'home resting' after injury scareNew Foto - Sounders GK Stefan Frei 'home resting' after injury scare

Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei was "back home resting" on Monday after leaving Sunday's match in Seattle in an ambulance with an injury to his head and neck. Frei, 39, collided with Columbus Crew midfielder Amar Sejdic's knee while trying to collect a free kick during second-half stoppage time in the 1-1 draw. Medical personnel rushed onto the field and placed Frei onto a stretcher before loading him into an ambulance at Lumen Field. "I'm incredibly grateful to all the staff that looked after me and happy to be back home resting now," Frei posted on X early Monday morning. "What resonates is all the messages, calls and love I've received from so many of you. Thank you -- truly. It means more than I can put into words." Instead of resuming play after Frei's injury, Crew coach Wilfried Nancy and Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer successfully encouraged officials to end the match. "Wilfried, I appreciate what he did because the ref wasn't going to stop the game," Schmetzer said. "Everybody knew that the game should have been stopped. Good on him. So thank you, Wilfried." "I hope that everything's going to be okay with (Frei)," Nancy said. "Our job is not easy. When you see a situation like that, again, football is not the most important. We stay positive, and hopefully everything's going to be good for him." Frei has been minding the Sounders' net since the 2014 season. Including his time with Toronto from 2011-13, he has recorded 112 clean sheets in 371 career MLS matches. --Field Level Media

Mark Lipsitz, who was recently appointed CEO of Bar/None Records and worked with bands including Ivy and the Feelies, has died. He was 61. Lipsitz died after suffering a heart attack on July 5, according to a representative. In a statement shared on social media, Bar/None Records remembered his contributions to the label that he joined in 2001. "The Bar/None family is heartbroken to share the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Mark Lipsitz," they wrote. "Mark was a fierce artist advocate and championed the music he discovered, pushing everyone he knew to be the best musician and the best person they could be. The music industry is losing a coach, an ambassador, and an ally. But Mark created friendships and networks of people that would never thrive as they do without his influence. The work he leaves behind will enrich us all forever." Throughout his career, Lipsitz was a noted advocate for artists in posts at several music companies, with his longest tenure at Bar/None. He signed Ivy, which counted the late Adam Schlesinger as a member, to Atlantic subsidiary Seed in 1994, and worked with musicians including Dar Williams and the Front Bottoms. Born in 1963, Lipsitz was a longtime New Yorker by way of Memphis, TN. While attending the University of Kansas, he ran the college radio station KJHK. His first foray into the music industry was with a sales job at Important Distribution, followed by Seed, whose roster included Ivy, Madder Rose and the Pastels. Lipsitz left Seed for Razor + Tie, working with musicians including Dar Williams and Continental Drifters, before heading over to Bar/None, which was founded in 2001. While at Bar/None, he marketed artists like the Langley School Music Project and Architecture in Helsinki. He also launched a vinyl reissue program for records from Of Montreal, the Feelies and Alex Chilton. He recently reunited with Ivy in anticipation of the group's upcoming album "Traces of You," set for release in September 2025. Tributes poured in on social media from artists and executives who have worked with Lipsitz over the years. "In 2025 we still have a career because of Mark's instincts, love and commitment to our musical vision," wrote Ivy on Instagram. "There would be no IVY without Mark Lipsitz…no Fountains Of Wayne without Mark Lipsitz…so many of the dominos that fell because of Mark Lipsitz wouldn't have fallen, including me and Dominique's beautiful children, our carers today….the list is endless." He averaged a career-high 21.8 points in 2024-25, along with 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 48.4% from the field. Powell is entering the final year of a contract paying him $20.5 million per season.According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, he can sign a three-year, $80.6 million deal until January. According toMichael Scotto, there was some reluctance on the side of the Clippers to give Powell a long-term extension as the team is hoping to open a large amount of salary cap space in 2027 — the same summer the contracts for Kawhi Leonard and James Harden expire. The veteran 36-year-old Love is entering his 18th NBA season. He had been in Miami since 2022 and averaged 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds last season in 23 games. He can be an unrestricted free agency in 2026. Never thought I'd be a math problem. NFL Quarter Century: Tom Brady, Aaron Donald, Randy Moss headline the all-2000s teamNew Foto - NFL Quarter Century: Tom Brady, Aaron Donald, Randy Moss headline the all-2000s team

The NFL is entering its 2025 season, which means we're a quarter of the way through this century of football. All week long, Yahoo Sports Senior NFL Writer Frank Schwab will dive into the past 25 years in the league. In the first NFL Draft of the last quarter century, the first overall pick was Courtney Brown. A little later, toward the end of the sixth round, nobody knew the history of the league would change when Tom Brady was picked 199th overall. Spoiler alert: Brady is the quarterback and captain of our NFL's All-Quarter Century team, and some of Brady's teammates made the list as well. But a team of the best players from the past 25 years has plenty of memorable megastars, and some all-time great players who couldn't even make the starting lineup. The competition for spots was fierce. Here is our NFL All-Quarter Century team, with only a player's seasons from 2000-2024 considered. Offense Defense Special teams There have been other great quarterbacks in this era. Peyton Manning won five MVPs, Aaron Rodgers won four, Patrick Mahomes hasn't lost in the playoffs before overtime of the AFC championship game, and don't forget about Drew Brees either. But come on. This is an easy one. Biggest snubs:Manning, Rodgers, Mahomes, Brees Tomlinson had no holes in his game. He won two rushing titles, was so good at the goal line he scored 28 rushing touchdowns in 2006 (his 31 total TDs is the NFL record) and also caught 100 passes one season. There have been other great running backs, but few had this diverse of a skill set. Peterson wasn't an easy call. There are plenty of great backs over the last 25 years. Frank Gore has the most yards in that span. Derrick Henry has more rushing yards per game than Peterson. Christian McCaffrey is a better all-around player. But Peterson's incredible prime won out. He's the last non-quarterback to win MVP, and might hold that title for a long time. Biggest snubs:Henry, Gore, McCaffrey, Marshawn Lynch, Clinton Portis Even though we can't count Moss' historic 1998 rookie season in this exercise, it was still no question. Moss' historic 2007 season did happen in this period, and it's Randy Moss. Not much more needs to be said. Johnson was the receiver you build on "Madden." His all-time great nickname of "Megatron" was well earned, and his 86.1 yards per game is tops in the last 25 years among receivers who have played at least 100 games. He retired early, but he was an unstoppable force for his nine seasons. Here's where it gets hard. How do you leave Larry Fitzgerald, Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase off this team? Owens was divisive but he had eight 1,000-yard seasons in a nine-year stretch, and at age 37, he put up 983 yards in what would be his final NFL season. His five first-team All-Pro nods in the last 25 years are tied for the most among all receivers, along with Tyreek Hill. It's very, very close but T.O. gets the last spot. Biggest snubs:Fitzgerald, Brown, Jones, Jefferson, Chase, Hill Travis Kelce has some incredible numbers and plenty of team success, but nobody in NFL history can match Gronkowski's dual domination as a pass catcher and a blocker. Coming out of retirement to play a big role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 2020 Super Bowl title run wasn't necessary for his legacy, but it finished the GOAT argument. Biggest snubs:Kelce, Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, George Kittle, Jason Witten Williams made 11 straight Pro Bowls from 2012-23, and might still be the NFL's best left tackle as he enters his age-37 season. Joe Thomas and his six first-team All-Pro appearances had a great argument for the second tackle spot. Jones barely edged out Thomas due to his sheer physical domination, a 325-pounder who was an incredible athlete and buried defenders week after week. Biggest snubs:Thomas, Jason Peters, Jonathan Ogden, Tyron Smith, Lane Johnson, Orlando Pace Martin had the most All-Pro appearances (seven) among all offensive linemen the past 25 years. A consistent star for the Dallas Cowboys from Day 1 (he was first-team All-Pro as a rookie and remarkably finished second in the Offensive Rookie of the Year race), he helped raise the value of guards across the league. From 2001-08, Faneca was a first-team All-Pro six times and second-team twice. He made nine straight Pro Bowls from 2001-09, was on the all-decade team of the 2000s and was voted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021. Biggest snubs:Marshal Yanda, Steve Hutchinson, Quenton Nelson Over the last 25 years, Kelce has been a first-team All-Pro six times. No other center made it more than twice. It's fair to wonder if Kelce's media presence played a small role in that, but Kelce's greatness is undeniable. Biggest snubs:Maurkice Pouncey, Nick Mangold, Kevin Mawae Donald is perhaps the easiest pickon the entire team. Anyone arguing against Donald on this team is simply wrong. Watt was another easy pick. Watt, Donald and Lawrence Taylor are the only three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year winners in NFL history. At his peak, Watt could singlehandedly take over a game. Sapp is tough because he had three Pro Bowls and his only NFL Defensive Player of the Year award came before 2000, which is the time frame considered. But Sapp was still a three-time All-Pro after 2000 and was a key for a 2002 Buccaneers defense that is among the best ever. And he was more dominant than any other candidates for the final spot. Biggest snubs:Geno Atkins, Cameron Heyward, Calais Campbell, Kevin Williams, Ndamukong Suh There are 22 players with 100 sacks over the last 25 years. All but two played at least 151 games. Garrett did it in 117 games, the fewest on the list. Garrett is working on a streak of seven straight seasons with at least 10 sacks. Julius Peppers has 20.5 more sacks than anyone else over the last 25 years (he had 159.5), but it took him 266 games. Watt has 108 in 121 games. He has also finished top four in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting five times in the past six seasons, winning once. His dominance made up for his relative lack of games. Biggest snubs:Peppers, Von Miller, Terrell Suggs, DeMarcus Ware, Jared Allen, Jason Taylor Lewis is the only off-ball linebacker to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice in the last 25 years, and his 2000 season (with an all-time great Ravens defense) is historic. The Super Bowl XXXV MVP and 12-time Pro Bowler was an easy pick. Since 2005, one linebacker has won NFL Defensive Player of the Year. It was Kuechly in 2013. Concussions ended his career after just eight seasons, but he was first-team All-Pro in five of those seasons. The only time he wasn't first- or second-team All-Pro, he won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Biggest snubs:Patrick Willis, Bobby Wagner, NaVorro Bowman, Derrick Brooks, Brian Urlacher "Revis Island" was a thing; opposing teams didn't bother throwing to Revis' side of the field in his prime. He was unbelievable in his first stint with the Jets, and as a topper he joined the Patriots for a single season in 2014 and was All-Pro and helped New England win a Super Bowl. Bailey made 12 Pro Bowls, three more than any other cornerback in NFL history. In his peak season of 2006 he had 10 interceptions even though teams rarely threw to his side. Woodson was a great cornerback who reinvented himself late in his career with Green Bay and became a versatile weapon from the secondary, and his overall disruptive abilities helped him win NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. Biggest snubs:Ronde Barber, Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman, Jalen Ramsey Bill Belichick doesn't give expansive answers on much, but all you have to dois ask himabout Ed Reed, who he'll call the greatest free safety ever. Ray Lewis got more attention, but it's possible Reed was the best player on those great Ravens defenses. There aren't many safeties in NFL history who had a more ridiculous highlight reel than Polamalu. He was explosive, a tremendous hitter, once had seven interceptions in a season and was an NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2010. Biggest snubs:Brian Dawkins, Earl Thomas, John Lynch Tucker's ugly alleged transgressions off the fieldshouldn't be ignored. At the same time, his results on the field are hard to deny. He has the most Pro Bowls (seven) and All-Pro nods (five) among all kickers over the last 25 years. His 89.1% success rate on field goals is the best of this era among any kicker with at least 100 attempts. And his 66-yard field goal to beat the Detroit Lions is still the longest in NFL history. Adam Vinatieri had more high-profile, game-winning kicks, but Tucker was the best. Biggest snubs:Vinatieri, David Akers Lechler was the all-decade punter for the 2000sand2010s, making him an easy pick. Lechler, a six-time All-Pro, has a reasonable case to be the second punter inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Biggest snubs:Johnny Hekker Putting anyone as a snub at this position would be disingenuous. There'sno question that Hester was the greatest returnerof the last 25 years. He has all the records and became the first primary returner to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was one of the most electrifying players of the era. Biggest snubs:None

MLB power rankings: Red-hot Astros look unstoppable as All-Star break nearsNew Foto - MLB power rankings: Red-hot Astros look unstoppable as All-Star break nears

Perhaps theHouston Astrostruly are unstoppable. After dispatching two of their bedrock players inAlex BregmanandKyle Tuckerlast winter, they got off to an appropriately middling start that suggested their revamped lineup might have, finally, lost too many pieces from their championships in 2017 and 2022. Yet look who's nearly atop USA TODAY Sports' power rankings. Despite losing All-Star shortstop Jeremy Peña to a rib injury this week, and missing slugger Yordan Alvarez for almost all of the first half, the Astros continued their stunning roll toward the break, dealing theLos Angeles Dodgerstheirworst loss everat Chavez Ravine as if it were the late 2010s all over again. And after a road sweep of their old adversaries, the team many love to hate has won 24 of its last 32 games, completing a startling five-week rise from No. 12 to No. 2 inpower rankings the rankings. With All-Star ace Hunter Brown andshould-be All-StarFramber Valdez fronting the rotation, the club may put the American League West to bed by the trade deadline. Soon enough, they may have the No. 1 Tigers in their sights. A look at our updated rankings: The D is taking over The A, with Tarik Skubal the likely All-Star starter backed byrejuvenated veterans. Jose Altuve slams three home runs at Dodger Stadium, thrilling the locals. Should soon have a reunion with the Blakes - Snell and Treinen heading out on rehab assignments. What a weekend at Wrigley: An eight-homer game and a gem fromAll-Star Matt Boyd. Zack Wheeler named pitcher of month - then twirls a one-hit, 12-strikeout gem. What a return for Brandon Woodruff, whobeats Marlinsin first outing since September 2023. How did they vault to the top of the AL East? Arguably the most dominant bullpen in the AL, for one. Pete Alonso already has 46 extra-base hits. Clarke Schmidt'selbow injuryadds to an even heavier trade deadline to-do list. Ha-Seong Kim is back, and infield depth is enviable. Manny Machado two hits shy of joining 2,000 club. They're calling Brendan Donovan "Donnie All-Star." Players' vote really nailed it sending Randy Rodriguez - perhaps NL's best reliever - to All-Star Game. Julio Rodriguez takes a .695 OPS into All-Star Game. Hunter Greeneset to start rehab assignment Tuesday. Huge boost from Lucas Giolito, who has 0.83 ERA over his past five starts. After a six-year absence, Jacob deGrom once again an All-Star. WithEugenio Suarez and Zac Gallenin hand, perhaps the most volatile team leading up to trade deadline. Sometimes off-season pitching additions work out: Yusei Kikuchi is an All-Star. Georgia man Byron Buxton is heading to his second All-Star Game. Carlos Santana will be a nice pickup for a contender needing a bat. Seth Lugo, another should-be All-Star, looking like strong candidate to opt out after the season. Trevor Rogers provides trade deadline dividend - just a year after he was traded. Marcell Ozuna batting .159 with one homer in past 30 games. Kyle Stowers is an All-Star – and he oughta do the Home Run Derby, too. Hey, they passed the Nationals. They fire their security blankets - and a very uncertain future looms. Luis Severino's given up the second-most earned runs in the game - 48 of the 64 yielded in Yolo County. They win two of three against Rockies, likely locking in pecking order for future Power Rankings. Hey, at least Hunter Goodman is a legit - not a courtesy - All-Star pick. Why is Wimbledon blaming human error for a mistake by its new electronic line-calling system?New Foto - Why is Wimbledon blaming human error for a mistake by its new electronic line-calling system?

LONDON (AP) — The All England Club, somewhat ironically, is blaming "human error" for a glaring mistake by theelectronic system that replaced human line judgesthis year atWimbledon. The CEO of the club, Sally Bolton, said Monday that the technology was "inadvertently deactivated" by someone for three points at Centre Court duringAnastasia Pavlyuchenkova's three-set victory over Sonay Kartala day earlier in the fourth round. On one point, a shot by Kartal clearly landed past the baseline but wasn't called out by the automated setup — called Hawk-Eye — because it had been shut off. Hours after Bolton spoke with reporters, the club issued a statement to announce that it "removed the ability for Hawk-Eye operators to manually deactivate the ball tracking," meaning "this error cannot now be repeated due to the system changes we have made." Bolton declined to say who made the mistake on Sunday or how, exactly, it occurred or whether that person would face any consequences or be re-trained. She did note that there were other people at fault: the chair umpire, Nico Helwerth, and two who should have let him know the system was temporarily down — the review official and the Hawk-Eye official. "We didn't need to put line judges back on the court again," Bolton said. "We needed the system to be active." Is Wimbledon using AI for line calls this year? No. But like most big tennis tournaments nowadays —the French Open is one notable exception— Wimbledon has replaced its line judges with cameras that are supposed to follow the balls on every shot to determine whether they land in or out. There are those, particularly in the British media, who keep referring to this as part of the ever-increasing creep of AI into day-to-day life, but Bolton objected to the use of that term in this case. "The point I would want to emphasize — and perhaps contrary to some of the reporting we've seen — is it's not an artificial intelligence system. And it is electronic in the sense that the camera-tracking technology is set up to call the lines automatically, but it requires a human element to ensure that the system is functional," Bolton said. "So it is not AI. There are some humans involved. And in this instance, it was a human error." What happened on the missed call at Wimbledon? Russia's Pavlyuchenkova was one point from winning a game for a 5-4 lead in the first set against Britain's Kartal on Sunday when a shot by Kartal landed long. But there was no ruling from Hawk-Eye. After a delay, Helwerth decided the point should be replayed, which Pavlyuchenkova thought showed bias toward an opponent competing in her home country. With Hawk-Eye back up and running after a delay, Kartal won that game, but Pavlyuchenkova took that set and the match. The All England Club looked into what happened and found that the line-calling system actually was off for three points before anyone noticed. The system itself worked "optimally," Bolton said repeatedly. "In this instance, sadly," she said, "it was the human part of the operation that made a mistake." Why was the Hawk-Eye system accidentally turned off during a match? Bolton said the system is shut down between matches — "and the humans are the people that need to do the activating and deactivating" — and someone accidentally did so during Pavlyuchenkova vs. Kartal. Asked why, Bolton responded: "Well, I don't know. It was a mistake, obviously. ... I wasn't sat there, so I don't know what happened." She said Helwerth could have made a ruling himself on the controversial non-call, the way he did on the prior pair of points, but instead just decided to pause the match. "I'm assuming," Bolton said, "he felt he had not seen it properly." Pavlyuchenkova said after the match the official told her he thought the ball was out. What do players think about the use of technology at Wimbledon? Players are divided on whether there even should be electronic rulings during matches — unless it is fool-proof — or whether there should be a return to Wimbledon's old way of doing things. Since 2007 through last year, there was a combination of the human touch and technology: There were line judges on court to make calls, but players were allowed to challenge and ask for a video replay of a point if they thought there was a mistake. "It's such a big match, big event," Pavlyuchenkova said. "Since we have already automatic line-calling and so much invested into this, we should probably look into something else to have better decisions." ___ Associated Press writer Mattias Karén contributed to this report. ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002.
