Jenna Bush Hager mourns Texas flooding victims: 'Our hearts are heavy'New Foto - Jenna Bush Hager mourns Texas flooding victims: 'Our hearts are heavy'

"A homesick Texan living in New York,"Jenna Bush Hageris mourning thetragedythat has unfolded in Central Texas. "We have to start just saying our hearts are heavy this morning thinking of my home state of Texas. Obviously there (was) devastating flooding," Bush Hager somberly said on "Today with Jenna and Friends" onJuly 7. Heavy rainfall overwhelmed the Guadalupe River last week, sending floodwaters roaring through homes and area summer camps. The death toll rose to at least 110, including at least 27 children and counselors from the belovedCamp Mysticin Kerr County, where flooding hit the hardest beginning July 4. Bush Hager explained her connection to the nearly 100-year-old nondenominational Christian camp for girls. She told guest co-hostDwayne Wadethat her mom, former first ladyLaura Bush, was a counselor at Camp Mystic and that many of her friends attended the camp. "It is a place that raised so many girls to become women, and it was almost like a spiritual, beautiful place," she added. Harrowing stories of survival:Clinging to trees, huddling on rooftops amid Texas floods She reflected: "I think as parents, we think about the horror of sending our kids to a place that's supposed to be — and is — healing and fun and joyful and all the things that kids deserve to have, and then something like this (happened)." Bush Hager, 43, revealed she had just dropped off her kids "at another camp in Texas" and described "putting them on the bus and saying goodbye to them" as an emotional experience. She shares daughters Mila, 12, and Poppy, 9, as well as her son, Hal, 5, with husband Henry Chase Hager. "I know so many parents whose kids are at camp or going to camp feel that way. We send our kids into the world with the faith that they can have happy lives, joyful lives, and as adults we know pain," the TV host said. "We hope that our kids never face it." "But Texas is a resilient, incredible state," she continued. "And it always is in my heart." Wade, who has five children, three of whom are adults, also empathized with Bush Hager. "Just as parents, there are certain places that we send our kids, (and) we feel those are places of safety for them ... because we know the growth and evolution that happens at these places," the former NBA star said. "But tragedy also occurs, and it's so unfortunate." Jenna, sister Barbarachat about their grandparents, raising kids Bush Hager also praised people's generosity during the time of grief. "The stories that I heard over the last couple of days were beautiful and heartbreaking," she explained. "Texas has a type of resilience where they're generous people, where people want to reach out and help." Bush Hager directed viewers to theAmerican Red Crossto find ways to help. Jacob Misiorowski strikes out 12 Dodgers in Brewers win, outduels Clayton Kershaw despite leadoff HR from Shohei OhtaniNew Foto - Jacob Misiorowski strikes out 12 Dodgers in Brewers win, outduels Clayton Kershaw despite leadoff HR from Shohei Ohtani

Jacob Misiorowski faced perhaps the stiffest test yet of his sensational rookie campaign Tuesday against the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. He passed, with honors. Misiorowski allowed a leadoff home run to Shohei Ohtani on the third pitch of the game. From there, he struck out 12 and didn't allow another run to power the Brewers toa 3-1 win. It added up to another sensational outing from the hard-throwing right-hander, who outdueled Dodgers legend Clayton Kershaw to pick up the win. Los Angeles hitters posted a season-high 15 strikeouts for the game as the Dodgers lost their fifth straight and their second straight to the Brewers. They remain in control of the NL West with a 56-37 record. The Brewers improved to 52-40 to move within three games of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Misiorowski showcased his heat with 21 fastballs that hit 100-plus mph on the radar gun. He balanced it with a sweeping slider and a diving curveball that repeatedly baffled the Dodgers. When he got into his only jam of the night, he got an assist from a stellar Brewers defense and unleashed a celebratory fist pump when the inning was done. FIRE US UP MIZ 😤pic.twitter.com/F6nhTqkbXi — Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers)July 9, 2025 "I was just in disbelief that I got out of the inning," Misiorowski told TBS after the game. "You're facing the Dodgers. It's just a wave of emotions to finally do what you were dreaming of doing." Misiorowski's night got off to an inauspicious start. He put Ohtani in an 0-2 hole to lead off the game. But he left a third-pitch curveball over the inside of the plate that Ohtani launched over the centerfield wall for his NL-best 31st home run of the season. It threatened to be a real welcome-to-the-big leagues moment from the three-time MVP in the fifth start of Misiorowski's MLB career. But Misiorowski didn't rattle. The 23-year-old proceeded to strikeout 10 of the next 13 batters he faced without issuing a walk. He was one pitch away from an immaculate inning in the second after striking out Michael Conforto and Hyeseong Kim on six pitches. He ended up allowing a single to Dalton Rushing, but ended the inning with no damage thanks to a strikeout of James Outman. His second time through the Dodgers order went better than his first. He struck out Ohtani with a 2-2 curveball in the third inning before ending the inning with a swinging strike three of Freddie Freeman to keep the Brewers within 1-0. He recorded two more strikeouts in the fourth before Brewers bats finally got to Kershaw with two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 Milwaukee lead. Misiorowski added two more strikeouts in the fifth inning, including a four-pitch effort that got Outman swinging on a 99 mph fastball on the outside corner. TWELVE STRIKEOUTS FOR JACOB MISIOROWSKI THROUGH FIVE INNINGS! 🤯pic.twitter.com/eA9bFmSU6T — MLB (@MLB)July 9, 2025 In the sixth inning, Misiorowski got into his first jam. He promptly worked out of it with some help. Misiorowski issued a leadoff walk to Ohtani on a full count, then allowed an infield hit to Mookie Betts. A Freddie Freeman groundout advanced the runners to second and third with one out. Andy Pages then hit a ground ball to third base, and Ohtani took off running for home. Third baseman Andruw Monasterio made the heads-up play to throw for home, and Ohtani never stood a chance. He was tagged out for the second out of the inning on a perfect throw. Helluva play by Andruw Monasterio to maintain the lead!pic.twitter.com/r8oTnrupIF — Talkin' Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_)July 9, 2025 A groundout to first by Conforto ended the inning, and Misiorowski's night was done. In the end, he allowed four hits including the home run to Ohtani while issuing a single walk. His 12 strikeouts marked a career high in the second of his five MLB starts that extended to six innings. He threw 68 of his 91 pitches for strikes. The outing lowered his ERA from 3.20 to 2.81. And he picked up a win against a future Hall of Famer in Kershaw who was fresh offrecording the 3,000th strikeout of his career. In a rookie campaign already featuring multiple standout efforts, Tuesday's against the Dodgers may be Misiorowski's best yet.

Remember Greg LeMond? Tour de France legend to reap Congress's highest civilian honor.New Foto - Remember Greg LeMond? Tour de France legend to reap Congress's highest civilian honor.

Maybe you've heard of Greg LeMond. Maybe you haven't. And if his name doesn't ring familiar, maybe it should. LeMond, 64, was the first American cyclist to win the Tour de France, one of the two or threemost-watched sporting eventsin the world. And with the doping-era disqualifications ofLance Armstrongand Floyd Landis, LeMond is the only American who has won the Tour. On July 9, LeMond will visit the Capitol to receive theCongressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor Congress can bestow, on par with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Congressapproved the medal in 2020, but the pandemic forced a delay in awarding it. Since 1776, Congress has awarded only a few Gold Medals to athletes. Honorees include boxer Joe Louis, tennis giant Billie Jean King, Olympian Jesse Owens and golfer Jack Nicklaus. In the United States, cycling is mostly recreational. In Europe and much of the rest of the world, it is amajor competitive sport, and LeMond is one ofits legends. LeMond was a once-in-a-generation talent. Born in California in 1961, he entered competitive cycling in the 1970s amid a modest American cycling boom, an era lovingly captured in the classic 1979 film "Breaking Away." In a sense, Greg LeMond's story is a real-life "Breaking Away." In the underground competitive cycling scene of his era, LeMond was so much better than everyone else that officials let him race against older boys. He beat them anyway. LeMond decamped to Europe in 1980 and soon proved himself the most talented young rider on that continent, against much stiffer competition. The rest of LeMond's career unfolded with the sort of high drama you mostly see in movies. (In fact, actor Ben Stiller is said to bemaking a movieabout LeMond's 1986 Tour victory.) In the summer of '86, LeMond captivated the cycling world by claiming America's first Tour win, an epic duel against another all-time great, Frenchman Bernard Hinault. All of France seemed set on denying LeMond his victory: Fans, journalists, fellow cyclists and even LeMond's own teammates, not to mention Hinault himself. Not for nothing did Hinault earn the nickname "The Badger." The late Richard Moore, a Scottish writer, recounted the 1986 Tour in a classic cycling book, "Slaying the Badger." LeMond should have gone on to win the Tour in 1987 and 1988: He was that much better than the rest of the peloton. But in April 1987, a few months before the next Tour, LeMondnearly died. He was turkey-hunting on a family ranch in rural California. A relative shot him by accident, piercing his body with dozens of shotgun pellets. By the time a helicopter delivered him to a hospital, LeMond had almost bled out. After the accident, LeMond could barely walk, let alone pedal. And yet, over the next two years, he staged a spectacular comeback. He entered races he could not finish, then finished races he could not win. By the summer of 1989, LeMond had regained his form. He entered the Tour that year and quickly proved he was capable of winning it again. The 1989 Tour pitted LeMond against another Frenchman: Laurent Fignon, a two-time Tour winner who was gunning for his third victory. The 1986 edition of cycling's premier event had been a great Tour. The 1989 edition would be widely remembered as thegreatest Tour of all time. TheTour de Franceplays out over 21 days of racing and covers more than 2,000 miles. Each cyclist's time is recorded at the end of every stage. The rider with the shortest overall time at the end wins the race. By the finish, the victor often commands a lead of five or 10 minutes. And that's why the 1989 Tourcaptivated the world: It was really, really close. After the second stage of racing, LeMond led Fignon by 51 seconds in cumulative time. After Stage 5, Fignon led by five seconds. After Stage 10, LeMond led by seven seconds. And so on. By the final day of racing, July 23, 1989, Fignon held a 50-second lead over LeMond. The last stage was an individual time trial: A race against the clock, each cyclist going all out for 15 miles, riding alone into Paris as the stopwatch ticked. The course was short and flat, and almost no one thought LeMond had a chance of riding it 50 seconds faster than Fignon to claim victory on the Champs-Élysées. The final moments of that time trial delivered some of the mostexhilarating live sportsever broadcast. Both Fignon and LeMond rode the race of their lives, but LeMond rode faster. At the finish, he had beaten Fignon by a margin of eight seconds. In more than a century of racing, the 1989 Tour remains the closest ever. LeMond had staged one of the greatest comebacks in the history of American sports. Many years later, I wrote abiography of LeMond, with the 1989 Tour as its centerpiece. It published in 2018 as "The Comeback: Greg LeMond, the True King of American Cycling, and a Legendary Tour de France." I hoped LeMond might one day become as well-known as Lance Armstrong, the Texan cyclist who won a record seven Tours between 1999 and 2005. Armstrong was perhaps the most celebrated athlete in America until a doping investigation brought him down. Shortly after my book came out, I received an email from U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, a Democrat from California, LeMond's birthplace. Thompson was a cyclist. He had read my book, and he wanted to honor LeMond. Some months later, Thompson introduced legislation to award LeMond the Congressional Gold Medal. It was an uphill battle, but Thompson collected the necessary support: a supermajority, two-thirds of the House and two-thirds of the Senate. On December 4, 2020, President Donald Trump signed theGreg LeMond Congressional Gold Medal Actinto law. "More than any other cyclist in our history," Thompson said on the House floor, "Greg LeMond was the epitome of the 'Breaking Away' culture: A young kid on a bike, trying to do things no American had ever done."
