Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer hopes performance against the A's is just the beginning

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Max Scherzer, for one night at least, offered a throwback performance. He stifled Athletics hitters for five innings on Friday night before finally running into some trouble in the sixth, but even then he limited the damage before exiting in a7-6 Toronto victory. Scherzer (1-0) finished with eight strikeouts while allowing five hits. "He was dominating areas up and down and out," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. "He is who he is for a reason." Scherzer claimed his first victory since July 25 last year when he pitched for Texas and the Rangers defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1. Injuries didn't help. The three-time Cy Young Award winner opened last season on the injured list after undergoing back surgery. Then shortly after recording that victory against the White Sox, he spent more than a month on the IL because of shoulder fatigue. Scherzersigned a $15.5 million, one-year contractwith the Blue Jays in the offseason, but again experienced health issues. He went on this 60-day ILbecause of an injured thumb. "My body's good," Scherzer said. "As long as my thumb is healthy, I can be myself. I can pitch like this. It's all about my thumb." This was his fourth start since rejoining the rotation, and Scherzer made the most of it. He struck out five consecutive batters at one point and shut out the A's over five innings, allowing just singles to Nick Kurtz and Tyler Soderstrom. The A's began to get to Scherzer in the sixth, with Kurtz hitting a two-run home run and Soderstrom getting a solo shot. Those homers cut the Blue Jays' lead to 7-3, but Scherzer induced a flyout to Miguel Andujar to end the threat. "It's my first time at 90 pitches, lengthening my arm out for the first time to the sixth inning this year," Scherzer said. "Get acclimated to that pitch count and hopefully get rolling. I'm happy about this, especially when we win. When I get my chance after the (All-Star) break, keep this going." Schneider said he thought the break came at a good time for the 40-year-old Scherzer. "Hopefully, he can build off of this and get him out there pretty regularly," Schneider said. "I think reshuffling the rotation if we can to give him a little more rest would be great. GENEVA (AP) — All seven trophy-winning teams at the Women's European Championship since 1997 were led to glory by a female coach. The streak collectively by Sarina Wiegman, Silvia Neid and Tina Theune is even more impressive because they were always in the minority at Women's Euros where most of the coaches were men. It's the same again at Euro 2025. Nine men and seven women are working as head coaches in Switzerland this month. At Euro 2022 there were 10 men and six women. That's progress, but the majority is still a kind of mansplaining in women's soccer. UEFA managing director of women's soccer Nadine Kessler — a playmaker for Germany on Neid's champion team in 2013 — believes it should be better. "It's still not enough female coaches, but it's the best edition we have so far," Kessler told The Associated Press. The seven women coaching at Euro 2025 include Gemma Grainger with Norway (and formerly Wales) and Pia Sundhage with Switzerland. Hope for the future "I hope that we're standing here at Euro 2029 and the majority of coaches are female," Grainger tells the AP. "I have no issue saying that whatsoever." "For me, the game should be about making sure the opportunities are there for female coaches but making sure that female coaches are at the right level to deliver." Sundhage is a storied veteran — a two-time Olympic champion with the United States — who has seen and heard it all about programs to develop and promote women coaches. She worked on such projects in Sweden and says she has been asked the question many times since. "Football education is very expensive," Sundhage says. "It's not 100% sure that the club will pay for everything. You have to (pay) from your own pocket. That's not the case on the men's side." UEFA funds coaching scholarships and now mandates each Euro 2025 team "to play all matches under the direction of either a female head coach or a female assistant coach." "We try to proactively influence this," Kessler says about the "Duties of the associations"clause in tournament rules. Contrasting quotas Still, one of the most respected men coaching in European women's soccer calls this quota "very strange" — because UEFA does not also require men's national teams to hire a female coach. "Why didn't they say the same to the male side? Just for the women's soccer?" Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson says when asked by the AP about gender equality at the Women's Euros. "That's one point." Sundhage agrees: "I believe men and women (coaching) together will be the best solution. I think it's a waste of knowledge because we don't give the women the chance." Denmark has never had a female coach though its coach Andrée Jeglertz insists the quality is there. "Definitely I am sure that one of those some day will be head coach of this team," says Jeglertz, who will be replaced by another man when he joins Manchester City after the tournament. "But if it's in a couple of years or 10, I don't know." UEFA's Kessler acknowledges "the women's game is now so attractive (to men). To educate coaches is one thing, but to have an opportunity is another thing." Representation of women in the dugout is at least better than in the boardrooms. Just three of UEFA's 55 member federations have an elected woman leader: Lise Klaveness at Norway, Debbie Hewitt at England andPascal van Dammeat Belgium. At UEFA itself, the 20-member executive committee includes two women: Klaveness, who joined in April, andLaura McAllister of Wales, who is a UEFA vice president. Both were elected in quota seats protected for women. Norway, England, Belgium and Wales are playing at Euro 2025 and all four teams are coached by a woman. Hiring the best available Though that looks significant, Klaveness reveals she would have approved appointing another man to coach the Norway women she played for 73 times had the best candidate been a him. "Of course we will hire the most competent, and if it was a man then it was a man," she tells the AP. The key, however, was Klaveness — a judge with expertise in employment law — insisting at least three female candidates be heard. "I think it brings a bit more openness when you come from the minority side," she says. "I am sure that England is very satisfied with Sarina, we are very satisfied with Gemma. King is reportedly going to be playing the role of Bullock's character's daughter, but little else is known about the plot or character details for the newcomers. "Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman's beloved novel and into theaters around the world," read a statement from the production team, "and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next installment in the Owens' story to new fans, and those who've been with us since the beginning." According to Warner Bros., production on the sequel is now officially underway. The project was firstannounced last summer. Susanne Bier (The Perfect Couple, Bird Box) is attached to direct, taking over the helm from Griffin Dunne, who oversaw the first film. Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original, is back, co-writing the scrip alongside Georgia Pritchett (Succession). Not only are Bullock and Kidman reprising their roles, but they're also taking on producorial duties alongside Di Novi. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Myles Turner wants to keep contending for NBA titles. That's why he decided to challenge an old cliche, one that he doesn't think is particularly accurate. The Milwaukee Bucks formally introduced Turner — the most significant free agent who switched addresses this summer — on Friday. Turner had spent the entirety of his 10-year NBA career with the Indiana Pacers, who went to the NBA Finals this past season and lost Game 7 of the title series to the Oklahoma City Thunder. "I hate when they say the grass can't be greener on the other side," Turner said. "I'm confident enough to say the grass is going to be greener wherever I go." He'll be greener, anyway: The Bucks have green as their primary uniform color. "My girlfriend told me I look good in green," Turner said. He makes Milwaukee younger and likely a bit more versatile. Brook Lopez, who is 37, was Milwaukee's starting center this past season. Turner is only 29, and even though he's played 10 seasons already may now just be coming into his prime. Bucks coach Doc Rivers is already convinced that pairing Turner — someone Milwaukee was able to get because it used the waive-and-stretch provision on the final two years and $111 million on Damian Lillard's contract with the team — will work wonders alongside a generational talent like former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. "If you could sit down before free agency started and draw the perfect fit next to Giannis, it was a picture of him," Rivers said, pointing to his new center, seated a couple of feet to his right. "I don't think people get how hard it is to win enough. Just, people don't get it. Myles and I started talking about it ... and I said, 'Yeah, winning is hard, man. And it takes everything out of you, and everything has to go right. Health and playing together and the team meshing and the right shot. It just takes so much.'" The Pacers know that — all too well. Haliburton had made three quick 3-pointers in Game 7 of the finals, and the score was tied at 16 when he tried to make a move about seven minutes into the first quarter. He blew out his Achilles tendon on the play and will be sidelined for the entirety of the 2025-26 season. And that likely means the Pacers won't be title-contending next season, which surely played some sort of role in Turner's decision. He didn't get into much of the specifics of his thought process. "There were alignment issues I think on that side as far as me and them," Turner said. "Out of respect to their organization, out of respect for this organization. I'm not going to speak on that too much. But again, this was just the best decision for me moving forward." Turner averaged 14.1 points and 6.8 rebounds in his 10 seasons with the Pacers. "We've got the best player in the world, we have the best coach in the world, and we have a system in place that can maximize Giannis' talent, and now we have the best counterpart next to him that maximizes talent even more," Bucks general manager Jon Horst said. Formula 1 racing telecasts could reportedly move from ESPN to Apple in 2026, with the streaming platform outbidding the network for the next broadcast rights agreement. Apple offered Liberty Media $150 million per year for F1 rights,Puck's Dylan Byers reported. That exceeds the approximate $85 million ESPN was paying for the current package, which expires after the current season. According to The Athletic,Liberty is "trending" toward picking Apple because of the gulf in numbers. The Athletic said ESPN offered $95 million while the Apple bid was between $120 million and $150 million and ESPN won't be matching Apple's offer. Byers reportsthat Apple officials, including CEO Tim Cook and Disney executives CEO Bob Iger and ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro, presented their offers to Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang at the annual Allen & Company conference in Sun Valley, Idaho. To this point, "F1" hasgrossed $300 million worldwide. So Apple and F1 are effectively already in business together. But elements of the filmmaking process, directed by Joseph Kosinski, could make their way into Apple's coverage. ESPN currently uses the world feed with announcers from Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. Technology could lead to a much more immersive experience for viewers than the world feed that is currently broadcast on ESPN. For instance, the custom camera system used to film footage in actual F1 cars could also be used on broadcasts,according to Puck. F1 will be the third sports package that Apple has agreed to, joining Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer. Streaming platforms including Netflix, Amazon, Peacock and YouTube continue to take steps into sports broadcast rights, lessening broadcast networks' previous hold on live sporting events. The risk for F1 is going exclusively to a streaming platform that won't be available on traditional broadcast or cable television. That might alienate some fans who don't want to pay for an Apple TV+ subscription to watch races. MLS has arguably suffered from no longer being as accessible to casual viewers or devoted fans who don't or can't pay for MLS Season Pass. However, F1 gained significant popularity through another streaming platform with Netflix's "Drive to Survive" docuseries, which created a whole new contingent of fans who learned about the teams, drivers, competition and much of the drama surrounding events on the circuit. Yet ESPN hasaveraged 1.3 million viewers per racethis season, doubling numbers from seven years ago when the network took over F1 broadcasts from NBC. Can Apple match that audience? It's difficult to say since Apple does not release viewership numbers from its MLB and MLS broadcasts. F1 might be less concerned about that with the major money that Apple will reportedly be paying for its U.S. rights package.
