"The Sopranos" refused to share food with "Sex and the City" while filming in same studio: 'You can't come over here!'

HBO/ Courtesy: Everett; Anthony Neste/Getty Sharing directors is one thing, butaspettaon the catering. The latest episode ofAre You a Charlotte?,Kristin Davis' charming rewatch podcast ofSex and the City, boasts director Allen Coulter, one of the in-house auteurs at HBO during their years of ascent in the late 1990s. And though the two shows had greatly different audiences and tones, he was the first of several directors to cross fromThe SopranostoSex and the City(and back again) in those days. Indeed, both shows being early HBO productions shared many resources, including indoor shooting locations. Davis recalled a time when both series were filming at Silvercup Studios in Queens (you may know its roof from the 1986 action-fantasyHighlander), where, unfortunately, there wasn't quite the generosity between the sibling shows as she had hoped for. HBO/Courtesy Everett Collection "Remember that middle area of Silvercup, because it had been the bread factory, so it wasn't really a proper studio?" Davis asked her old director. "And the different stages would have a common area of hallways, andThe Sopranoswould have their craft services, which was like going to the best Italian restaurant that you could possibly imagine. And our craft services was really, really... not that." Davis, always polite, quickly added, "No offense to anyone who made it. But we would just be like, 'How can we get over there and get the food?' And they would guard that food, do you know what I mean? They'd be like, 'No. You can't come over here.' And we'd be like, 'Please, can we have some meatballs?'" Davis further explained, "On hour 15, you're really wanting theSopranosmeatballs, but you can't have them." Coulter apologized on behalf of "the mob was keeping you away from the food," which then triggered a memory he had, as one of the few with intimate knowledge of the inner workings of both shows. What you probably need to know is that in most movies, shows, television commercials — anything that involves actors eating food — the people on camera usually don't actually swallow what's on their plate. When it gets to take 16, this would lead to greatagita. ButThe Sopranoswas special. "I remember we were shooting a scene at the Bada Bing, you know, the so-called backroom of the Bada Bing, where they're all having lunch and pasta and stuff. When shooting an eating scene, and this would be true ofSex and the City, you always have a spit bucket." HBO/Courtesy Everett Collection Coulter continued, "So we're shooting that and I go over and I was looking at the guys and the guys had the spit bucket up on the table there, but it's completely clean. I said, 'What's the deal there?' They said, 'They just eat everything.' So we did, like, four takes and they would eat four meals." But Davis added that, surprisingly, onSATC, they never used a spit bucket either. "I think it was becauseMichael [Patrick King]and I feel like alsoDarren [Star]really wanted us to eat and keep talking. So, like, we didn't really have the opportunity to be like, 'Okay, spit.' You know?" Davis then noted, however, that "we would order something that wasn't gonna be insane, right, for eight million takes or whatever." One assumes that if they were chowing down on Artie Bucco'szuppa di musselsorcannelloniwith the fresh béchamel, it would be a different story. David McLane/NY Daily News Archive via Getty Shari Lewis was married to Stan Lewis from 1953 to 1957 The Lamb Chop ventriloquist married Jeremy Tarcher in 1958, and they remained together until her death in 1998 She shared her only child, Mallory, with her second husband Shari Lewis's two great loves shaped her life and career in significant ways. The ventriloquist's two marriages are covered inShari & Lamb Chop, a new documentary about the trailblazing children's entertainer and her beloved sock puppetLamb Chop. Shari Hurwitz met her first husband, Stan Lewis, when she was just 15. Four years later, the high school sweethearts tied the knot. Stan worked in entertainment, on the business side, as an account executive for a number of TV game shows. He made headlines when he became involved in a "scandal." "They had a bit of a crisis. There was a scandal involving people being manipulated by the show, and there was a big investigation, and the shows were cancelled, and Stan lost his job," Ely Hurwitz, Shari's cousin, explains in the documentary. Kino Lorber The incident was "devastating to Shari and to her parents," Hurwitz notes. "They were very concerned about the impact of the scandal on her public reputation." "That sort of put an end to that marriage. So they separated and got divorced and kept everything as quiet and secret as possible." It wasn't long after her divorce from Stan that the rising star met Jeremy Tarcher, who worked in TV as an assistant program manager and who, according to Hurwitz, "came from a wealthy family and is what we today would call a trust-fund child." She and Tarcher hit it off ("I thought he was the most elegant man I'd ever met — he's so elegant he doesn't even go to bed barefoot," Lewis told PEOPLE in 1976), but he sometimes felt intimidated by her success. Though he was well-educated, Tarcher didn't share Lewis's drive to succeed, which led to some hiccups in their relationship. Still, the two tied the knot less than a year after meeting. Kino Lorber By then, Lewis was already a successful puppeteer, having introduced Lamb Chop on the morning children's TV showCaptain Kangarooin 1957. "You can't open one of the doors without being conked by a rabbit or an elephant," Tarcher toldCuemagazine in 1958, perCBS News. "It's like being married to Fibber McGee." (Fibber McGee was a popular radio and TV character from 1935 to 1960 who was famous for hisoverstuffed closets.) The couple welcomed daughter Mallory in July 1962, as they worked together onThe Shari Lewis Show. After it concluded in 1963, they struggled in their marriage as Tarcher explored new-age ideologies. "The New Age movement was the antithesis of my mother, but she loved her husband, and so she made an attempt to encourage and support," Mallory, 63, explains in the documentary. Ron Galella Collection via Getty The two experienced hard times through Tarcher's experimentation with drugs and lack of drive to match Lewis's professional success. He did, according to the 1976 PEOPLE feature on Lewis, enjoy some success as a publisher of nonfiction and celebrity books, including Johnny Carson'sHappiness Is a Dry Martini. "The thought of not working has never occurred to me," Lewis says in archival footage in the documentary. "I do not understand not working. If I didn't perform, I would do something else. I would write. I'd work in an advertising agency." Despite difficult periods, Lewis and Tarcher worked things out and remained together until her death in 1998 from uterine cancer at age 65. Tarcher died in 2015 at age 83. Shari & Lamb Chopis now playing in select theaters. Read the original article onPeople

TORONTO (AP) —Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner, 24-time Grand Slam title winner Novak Djokovic and No. 5-ranked Jack Draper all withdrew Sunday from the Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto that starts in a week, citing injuries. TheNo. 1-ranked Sinnerblamed his right elbow, which he hurt in a fall in the fourth round at the All England Club on the way to his first title there and fourth major trophy. He won his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto in 2023. "Winning that title in Toronto two years ago was the start of a really special moment for me, but after speaking with my team, I have to recover," Sinner said. Djokovic said a groin injury was why he pulled out from an event he has won four times. He lost to Sinner in the semifinals at Wimbledon. Draper will miss Toronto and the Cincinnati Masters next month because of a problem with his left arm, meaning he won't have any hard-court tuneup tournament before the U.S. Open begins on Aug. 24. "After Wimbledon I picked up an injury in my left arm, nothing serious, but I have to make sure it recovers fully for the rest of the season," Draper posted on social media. "Unfortunately, I won't be able to compete in Toronto and Cincinnati…. See you in NYC!" ___ More AP tennis:https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

England's Jess Carter reveals racial abuse at Euro 2025, FA has contacted policeNew Foto - England's Jess Carter reveals racial abuse at Euro 2025, FA has contacted police

ZURICH (AP) — England defender Jess Carter says she has been subject to racial abuse online at the Women's European Championship. Carter came in for a lot of criticism for her performance duringEngland's opening loss to France. And some of that has crossed the line even as the 27-year-old and the Lionesses have reached the semifinals at Euro 2025. "From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,"Carter wrotein an emotional post on Instagram on Sunday. "Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race." Carter has made 49 appearances for England and was part of the victorious Euro 2022 squad as well as an integral part of the team that finished runner-up to Spain at the World Cup the following year. She says she will be taking a step back from social media. "As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can," Carted added. The Football Association has contacted police back in the United Kingdom. "Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs,"FA CEO Mark Bullingham said. "We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism. "As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice." Bullingham added that the FA had measures in place to respond quickly as "regrettably, this is not the first time this has happened to an England player." Carter's teammates immediately responded to her Instagram post with messages of support. The Lionesses also issueda joint statementcondemning the "online poison" and announcing that they will no longer perform the anti-racism stance of taking a knee before matches because "it is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism." England defender Lucy Bronze elaborated on the group's decision. "I think it was just the fact that we feel as a collective, is the message as strong as it used to be? Is the message really hitting hard? Because to us it feels like it's not if these things are still happening to our players in the biggest tournaments of their lives," Bronze said. "It's about putting another statement out there to say it's something that still is a problem, it's something that still needs to be put right, more needs to be done in football, more needs to be done in society." Carter plays her club soccer for Gotham FC in the United States, having joined from Chelsea a year ago. "We are heartbroken and outraged by the racist abuse directed at Jess Carter. Jess is not only a world-class football player — she is a role model, a leader and a valued part of our Gotham FC family," the New York area-based team said ina statement. "At Gotham, we believe in a culture of mutual respect and remain committed to building a game — and a community — where everyone feels safe, respected and celebrated. There is no place for racism in our sport." England plays Italy in the semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva, aftera dramatic comeback against Swedenlast week saw the Lionesses win a chaotic penalty shootout. The other semifinal pits Spain against Germany on Wednesday. "Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it," Carter said. "We have made some historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all. "I'm now looking forward and focusing on putting all my energy into helping my team." Euro 2025 has so far delighted spectators with exciting matches as well as the stunning scenery around Switzerland. However, as the women's game continues to grow it is also attracting more online vitriol. "The bigger this sport has got, it seems to be that more abuse has come as well, and I think especially in women's football, the online abuse seems to be getting worse and worse," Bronze said. "We see it more in the stadiums in men's football and online, but I think with women's football, there seems to be a real target online. "I think, with online platforms, it's something that we can make a change to … there is a way to make the change, there is a solution. I don't have the answer to that solution because I'm not head of a social media platform, but I'm sure that there is one." ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Norwegian author Ingvar Ambjørnsen dies at age 69New Foto - Norwegian author Ingvar Ambjørnsen dies at age 69

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Ingvar Ambjørnsen, a Norwegian author who mixed a sharp, even dark tone with humor and empathy in works that depicted the lives of the oppressed and vulnerable, has died, his publisher said. He was 69. The Cappelen Damm publishing house did not specify the cause of death. Ambjørnsen had long been public with his battle against a lung illness called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. Norwegian tabloid VG reported he is survived by his wife, Gabriele Haefs, saying she posted news of Ambjørnsen's death on Saturday. Born on May 20, 1956, in Tönsberg — described on his German-language author website as "Norway's most bar-filled town" — Ambjørnsen grew up in Larvik and worked in various jobs in industry and psychiatry before publishing his first documentary novel in 1981. Four years later, he moved to Hamburg, where he lived for decades. "His books are characterized by powerful, realistic descriptions of the seamier side of life," the publisher said. Ambjørnsen became one of the publisher's best-known contemporary authors with four novels built around the character Elling, a shy and imaginative outsider who coped with the funny but endearing foibles of daily life after release from a psychiatric hospital. The comedy "Elling" — the story of two recently released mental patients bunking together in an apartment in Oslo — was nominated in 2001 for anAcademy Awardas best foreign-language film. The tale landed on Broadway in 2010, with a play starring Denis O'Hare and Brendan Fraser: One of the misfits was fixated on his mother, the other obsessed with sex. According to the author website, Ambjørnsen wrote 18 novels and three collections of short stories, as well as several books for children and youth. A newly written collection of short stories is set to go on sale in Norway on July 31.

However, unbeknownst to Donna, Sophie has invited three of her mother's former flames — Harry (Colin Firth), Bill (Stellan Skårsgard) and Sam (Pierce Brosnan) — to determine which one of them is her biological father. The film — which is based on the Broadway musical of the same name — spawned a 2018 sequel,Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. In August 2024,Christine Baranski, who played Tanya, revealed that athird movie is in the works. Streep, who was a fan of the Broadway musical, was a shoe-in for the part of Donna. "You don't ask Meryl Streep to audition," producer Judy Craymer toldVoguein a September 2023Mamma Mia!oral history. "Universal made a bit of a fuss because we didn't go over their list of ideas first, to which I said, 'Sorry, but there is no list—we gotMeryl f------ Streep!' " While many actresses auditioned for the role of Sophie, Seyfried ultimately captured the team's attention with her rendition ofABBA's "I Have a Dream," U.S. casting director Ellen Lewis toldVogue. Meanwhile, U.K. casting director Priscilla John "fought" for Cooper to play Sky. "The studio said they thought he wasn't fun enough," she toldVogue. "I don't believe there were any actual conversations with her team," she said. "It never got further than an internal discussion between the filmmakers and the studio." "We loved Michelle Dockery, and she could sing because she did all sorts of musicals in drama school," John toldVogue. Ultimately, Dockery took herself out of the running for Sophie. "She chose to do a play at the Almeida Theatre instead," John added. Andrew H. "She got quite far before we ultimately chose Amanda, who could not only sing but also looked so much like Meryl," John toldVogue. Mulligan got her chance to play the part more than a decade later, when she was cast as Sophie in a 2019 spoof ofMamma Mia! Here We Go Againfor Red Nose Day. Vera Anderson/WireImage Amy Adams— who went on to star with Streep in 2008'sDoubtand 2009'sJulie & Julia—was among the list of Hollywood legends whom Lewis recalled seeing audition for Sophie in Los Angeles. The Cincinnati Bengals could have an historic offense. But what about the defense?New Foto - The Cincinnati Bengals could have an historic offense. But what about the defense?

Joe Burrow got his wish. Burrow publicly advocated for theCincinnati Bengalsto retain Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins this offseason. "We all want to stay together, so we want to make it work," Burrow toldNFL Network in February. The very next month theBengals re-signed Chase to a four-year, $161 million deal, making him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, and Higgins to a four-year, $115 million pact. The two now represent the highest-paid receiver duo in the NFL. Cincinnati, thePhiladelphia Eaglesand theMiami Dolphinsare the only three teams in the NFL who have receiver duos earning an annual average of $25 million or over. Are two receivers absorbing a large percentage of a team's salary cap a winning formula? It's not an exact science. The Eagles won Super Bowl 59 with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith earning at least $25 million a season ago, but the Dolphins missed the playoffs while paying Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in the same neighborhood. The Bengals were on vacation during the 2024 postseason before they inked Chase and Higgins to mega deals. Combine Burrow'sfive-year, $275 million dealthat he signed in 2023, the Bengals are allocating approximately $124 million a year for three players. The three large contracts have compromised Cincinnati's defense to some degree. The Bengals and standout defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks in 2024, are in a contract dispute. Meanwhile, 2025 first-round pick defensive end Shemar Stewart and the Bengals are in acontract standoff because of contract language. Stewart is the NFL's only unsigned 2025 first-round pick. Defense was the Bengals' big problem last season. The Bengals lost six games in which they scored 25 points or more and lost four contests where they scored at least 33 points. Cincinnati ranked 25thin both points allowed and total defense last year. One throw helped change QB Justin Fields' career. Now he can change the Jets' fortunes Hendrickson's indicated that he won't play under his current contract. It's hard to imagine any improvement from the Bengals defense sans their top defensive player from a year ago. The Bengals had a prolific offense last season. Burrow recorded a career-year leading the league in passing yards and touchdown passes. Chase achieved the receiving triple crown. But the Bengals were still on the outside looking in come playoff time in large part because of an inept defense. The Bengals did fire defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and replaced him with Al Golden. However, the coordinator swap feels like a band aid. The Bengals simply lack talent on defense because they've invested heavily on offense -- mainly on three players. Burrow got his wish. The Bengals should once again have a high-powered offense, but they simultaneously handicapped their defense. Is it a winning formula? We'll see, though, the adage is defense wins championships. Two-time cancer survivor Ann-Katrin Berger puts in all-time great performance to propel Germany to Euro 2025 semifinalsNew Foto - Two-time cancer survivor Ann-Katrin Berger puts in all-time great performance to propel Germany to Euro 2025 semifinals

In terms of challenges that two-time cancer survivor Ann-Katrin Berger has overcome, making a string of saves inGermany'sEuro 2025quarterfinal victory overFranceon Saturday night is relatively low down on the list. That's not to say it wasn't a huge night for the goalkeeper and her country – she put in one of the tournament's all-time great goalkeeping performances as Germany beat France 6-5 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Berger made nine saves in open play, more than any other player has managed in a knockout stage match at the European Women's Championship since 2013, per the BBC. Her 102nd-minute save to prevent an own goal by teammate Janina Minge was the pick of the bunch, as she acrobatically dived backwards and clawed away the captain's looping header when it looked destined for the back of the net. But the 34-year-old did not stop there. In the penalty shootout, she kept out the very first spot kick from France's Amel Majri, scored her team's fourth penalty, and then dived to her left to keep out Alice Sombath's effort – France's seventh penalty attempt – and win the game for Germany. In apparent disbelief, Berger simply sank to her knees, her arms outstretched and a huge grin on her face, and watched as her jubilant teammates sprinted towards her to celebrate. Progressing to the semifinals of Euro 2025 will have particular meaning to Berger, as it was at this tournament three years ago that she discovered her thyroid cancer had returned after she had previously been diagnosed in 2017. In both instances, the German returned to soccer within months of starting her treatment, citing her need to take her mind off the situation. "You have to focus on something else, to hold onto something. For me, that was the Euros," she told Sky Sports in 2022. "Football saved my brain and saved my mental health because I had something to hold on to." Having made a full recovery again, the only visible sign of what Berger has been through is on her neck, where a tattoo reading "All we have is now" covers up scars from her treatment. On the pitch on Saturday, Berger and Germany's hopes of making it past the quarterfinals took a huge dent in the 13th minute when Kathrin Hendrich was sent off for pulling Griedge Mbock by her hair in the penalty area. Grace Geyoro converted the resulting spot kick, and suddenly Germany found itself a goal and a player down. ButDie Nationalelfresponded quickly when Sjoeke Nüsken headed Klara Bühl's corner in at the near post in the 25th minute. France's Delphine Cascarino and Geyoro each had goals disallowed for offside either side of halftime, before Nüsken passed up a golden opportunity to give Germany an unlikely lead in the 69th minute when her poor penalty was saved by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin after Selma Bacha had fouled Jule Brand. But Berger's heroics were enough to take Germany to the semifinals, where it will face world champion Spain on Wednesday. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com

Jake Larson, the World War II veteran and social media star known as "Papa Jake," has died, his granddaughter posted on his social media accounts Saturday. He was 102. "Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young. Please know, he went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end," granddaughter McKaela Larson said in the posts. A member of the nation's "Greatest Generation," Larson gained a loyal following on social media as a centenarian, posting as@storytimewithpapajakeon TikTok, where he racked up more than 1 million followers with his stories about his life and military service. CNN's Christiane Amanpourinterviewed Larsonin Normandy, France, in June 2024 on the80th anniversary of D-Day. Sitting in a wheelchair just steps away from the shoreline, he said he remembered the invasion "like it was yesterday." "I got off the landing craft and had water right up to my chin," he told CNN. "We were all kids." Larson told Amanpour he was just 15 years old when he enlisted in the National Guard — lying about his age at the time. "I don't think I was a hero. I was just like anybody else. We were all in this together," he said, adding he was there to tell the stories of his many friends who died during the invasion that turned the tide of the war. Asked by Amanpour whether he and other soldiers knew what they were fighting for at the time, Larson said, "Oh, definitely. That we knew. Every one of us was prepared to give our life to kick Hitler's ass out of Europe. … And we did." Just over three weeks ago, Amanpour won an Emmy for her interview with Larson, an honorshe shared with him. He reacted to the award in a video sent to Amanpour: "It's phenomenal. And here I am, little country boy that joins the infantry at 15 years old and I come here now, 102, going on 103 and I'm winning something like this? There is a God." "My dad had an epic, epic life," his son, Karlan Larson said in a brief phone interview with CNN. His father's Emmy is "proudly displayed" in his living room, which Karlan Larson told CNN would be "handed down to family members — the grandkids will have to figure out a schedule." Jake Larson was "overjoyed" that Amanpour shared her statue with him, his son said. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com
