SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved therapy bunny named Alex The Great, who provided snuggles and comfort from ballparks to NBA arenas, airports, farmers markets and even Easter egg hunts and NASCAR races, has died. He was 4. A floppy-eared Flemish giant who was larger than life in both size and spirit,Alex suffered complications from cancer treatmentand died early Monday, his owners said. The rabbit had undergone care at the renowned UC Davis Veterinary Hospital in recent days. Alex appeared June 4 sporting his signature cap for Padres-Giants at Oracle Park. At 4 months old,he attended his first Giants gamein April 2021 — believed to be the first bunny in the stands at the waterfront ballpark. He loved wearing bow ties and riding in his remote-controlled car, which Alex did in November 2021 following an Arizona Fall League appearance at Scottsdale Stadium where he saw now-Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe as a rising prospect. Owners Kei Kato and Josh Row saved Alex from a slaughterhouse — but, really, it was the bunny who saved them. They took Alex on all their trips and he spent hours at San Francisco International Airport with a golden retriever friend offering travelers emotional support. "He saved us and saved so many people," Kato said via text message Monday. "All the stories people are sharing are so overwhelming." Fans stopped in awe when they saw Alex The Great wherever he went, often surprised by his size and always eager to snap a photo or selfie. Kato and Row were thrilled to share him with the world because Alex had brought them so much love and joy and they wanted to spread that to anyone who might need a lift or a smile. Or provide a chance to pet Alex's soft orange fur or give him a hug. "We remember him well for his surprise frequent visits to the ballpark," Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a text message. "We remember the comfort he brought those who loved him and the joy he brought so many." Kato lost her brewery restaurant during the pandemic and adopting Alex provided her with a new purpose. He helped Kato deal with the anxiety and stress of no longer having her main source of income and the fulfillment her business brought. "I lost it all because of COVID, so I've been really stressed a lot," Kato said at the ballpark that spring night in 2021. "We support local. I was a local. He's well trained, too." When Alex became such a hit on the big screen, quick-thinking Daniel Kurish of the Marlins' media relations staff went to find the bunny in the seventh inning to deliver some Miami gear. Less than a month later, in May 2021,Alex appeared at a Suns-Warriors game at Chase Center. Of course, they loved him there, too. He'd also pop up outside the arena in Thrive City every now and then to greet fans before games. ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti sent a letter to theNCAACommittee on Infractions suggesting that Michigan's football program should not face more sanctions stemming from asign-stealing scheme, according to two people familiar with the situation. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because no one is authorized to comment on an ongoing NCAA investigation. Petitti's letter was shared during last month's hearing because he was unable to attend while recovering from hip surgery, Big Ten Deputy Commissioner Diane Dietz said. ESPN was first to report some details of Petitti's letter. The NCAA alleged last year in a notice relating to its sign-stealing investigation that current coach Sherrone Moore violated rules as an assistant under former coach JimHarbaugh, who served a three-game suspension in exchange for the conference dropping its own investigation into the allegations after the two ended up in court. After winning the 2023 national championship, Harbaugh left to lead the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore also was accused of deleting text messages with sign-stealer Connor Stalions before they were recovered and provided to the NCAA. Moore has said he has and will continue to cooperate with the NCAA's investigation. The NCAA investigation surfaced early in the 2023 season amid allegations that Michigan used a robust in-person scouting and sign-stealing operation conducted by Stalions, a former a low-level staffer. He was suspended by the school and laterresigned. Stalions, who did not participate in the NCAA investigation, recently said he knew almost every signal opponents used in seven games over two seasons. Michigan is prepared to suspend Moore for two games during the coming season. The NCAA will decide if that self-imposed sanction is enough to address allegations that Moore failed to cooperate in an investigation. The governing body takes three months on average for contested cases to make a final decision. The Wolverines open the season on Aug. 30 at home against New Mexico State and at Oklahoma, where Moore was an offensive lineman, on Sept. 6. Harbaugh was suspendedby the Big Ten, three weeks after an investigation by the NCAA into the allegations began. Hours later, Michigan asked a court for an injunction and temporary restraining order and the two sides narrowly avoided a court hearing. Harbaugh has repeatedly denied any involvement with Stalions' apparent scheme. The NCAAdoes not have rules against stealing signs, but does prohibit schools from sending scouts to the games of future opponents and using electronic equipment to record another team's signals. Multiple Big Ten schools had records showing ticket purchases under Stalions' name and video surveillance footage of people in those seats with cell phones pointed toward the field. Big Ten coaches and athletic directors previouslypushed Petitti to punish Harbaughbefore the NCAA concluded its investigation. When the Big Ten did suspend Harbaugh, Michigan claimed the commissioner overstepped his authority and acted outside the conference's bylaws. Athletic director Warde Manuel released a scathing statement just before Michigan kicked off at Penn State and won 24-15 without Harbaugh on the sideline. "Not liking someone or another university or believing without any evidence that they knew or saying someone should have known without an investigation is not grounds to remove someone from their position before the NCAA process has reached a conclusion through a full NCAA investigative process," Manuel said then. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Bob Hammel, who covered 23 NCAA Final Fours and 29 Indiana high school basketball tournament championships during a 52-year sports writing career that included a close friendship with late Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight, has died. He was 88. Hammel died Sunday at Bell Trace, a senior living community in Bloomington, according to an obituary in The Herald-Times, his longtime employer. No cause of death was given. The lifelong Indiana resident spent 40 years with the Bloomington Herald-Telephone and later Herald-Times, including 30 as sports editor. Hammel was a member of several halls of fame, including the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Football Writers Association of America, Indiana Journalism and Indiana University Athletics. He served terms as president of the Basketball and Football Writers associations. He received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Bert McGrane Award from the Football Writers Association. Hammel won the Indiana Sportswriter of the Year award 21 times. He authored or co-authored 14 books, including the 2002 autobiography of Knight, the fiery IU basketball coach who died in 2023. They also teamed in 2012 for a book titled "The Power of Negative Thinking." Upon retiring as Big Ten Conference commissioner in 2020, Jim Delany said, "Bob Hammel is simply the most important Big Ten writer in the last 50 years." Hammel, a native of Huntington, Indiana, attended Indiana University for a year. He took a summer job as sports editor of his hometown paper and instead of returning to school that fall, he stayed on at the paper for eight years. He worked at papers in Peru, Fort Wayne, Kokomo and Indianapolis before being hired as sports editor of the Herald-Telephone in 1966. His career included covering five Olympics before he retired from sports writing in 1996. It took 40 years, but Pee-wee's bike is now at the Alamo. Just not the basement. The Alamo announced last week it had acquired and would display the iconic bike from the 1985 Tim Burton film, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." The San Antonio landmark plays a key role in the film chronicling Pee-wee Herman's search for his stolen bicycle when a devious fortuneteller tells him the bike is located in the Alamo's basement. Pee-wee,played by the late Paul Reubens, learns the Alamo doesn't have a basement, but hasn't stopped tourists from tongue-in-cheek inquiries. "It's the most common question our guest services team hears is, 'Where is the basement at the Alamo?'" said Jonathan Huhn, senior communications director for the Alamo Trust, Inc., the nonprofit organization that oversees the Alamo's operations. "It's an iconic piece of Alamo pop-culture history." The red-and-white bike — or as Pee-wee calls it in the movie, "the best bike in the whole world" — is adorned with streamers on the handlebars and a lion emblem at the front. Huhn said it was acquired from an auction in Los Angeles. The bike will serve as a centerpiece in the Mays Family Legacy Gallery, which examines the the Alamo's cultural impact, part of a new visitor center and museum slated to open in fall 2027. It will join other pop culture items including memorabilia from the 1960 movie about the Alamo that starred John Wayne. "It's really a pop culture bridge" that will bring people to learn about the Alamo's history, Huhn said. But before then, the bike will go on display for a limited time at the Ralston Family Collections Center. The Alamo also plans to host a free public screening of "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" in Plaza de Valero. More details about dates for the display and the screening will be released later. Unlike the Alamo, the building where Pee-wee's bike will eventually be located does have a basement. But, before you ask, that's not where the bike will be.

The Green Bay Packers have agreed to a four-year, $88 million contract extension with right tackle Zach Tom,NFL Network reported. The deal has a maximum value of $92 million and includes a $30.2 million signing bonus that is the largest ever for an NFL offensive lineman, according to the report. It's not clear from the report what would escalate the contract's value to $92 million. Tom, 26, is approaching his fourth NFL season. He's started each of Green Bay's games the past two seasons, but he has never made a Pro Bowl. [Get more Packers news: Green Bay team feed] The Packers selected Tom in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Wake Forest. He was a part-time player as a rookie who played in nine games, including five starts midway through the season. He split his time as a rookie between left tackle and left guard. Tom earned the starting job at right tackle ahead of the 2023 season and has held down the position since. His performance and reliability at the position compelled the Packers to award him with a lucrative long-term deal that includes a historic signing bonus. The deal for Tom marks a significant pay raise over the four-year, $4.16 million contract he signed as a rookie. For the Packers, it ensures that Tom won't leave in free agency next offseason and secures the right tackle position through the 2029 campaign as Green Bay looks to capitalize on quarterback Jordan Love's prime. Love, also 26, is playing on a four-year, $220 million contract that extends through the 2028 season. Since taking over for Aaron Rodgers as Green Bay's starting quarterback in 2023, Love has led the Packers to consecutive playoff appearances. Green Bay advanced to the divisional round in 2023 and lost in the wild-card round last season to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The goal in Green Bay this season and beyond is to build on those playoff appearances and contend for a Super Bowl.
