Gilbert Carrasquillo/Getty; Santiago Felipe/Getty Malcolm-Jamal Warneris being remembered by the man who once played his onscreen father,Bill Cosby. After news broke that Warnerdied at age 54 on Sunday, July 20, while on a family vacation in Costa Rica, Andrew Wyatt, a spokesperson for Cosby, 88, tells PEOPLE that his death "reminded him of the same call he received when his son died." Ennis William Cosby, the actor's only son,was murdered in 1997. He was shot to death at age 27 during an attempted robbery on a Los Angeles freeway ramp as he tried to change a flat tire. Warner, meanwhile, drowned while swimming, a source confirmed to PEOPLE. The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) later said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that they "removed the body of a man who apparentlydied as a result of asphyxiation by submersion," whom they later identified as Warner. Paras Griffin/Getty The statement said that based on preliminary information, "the victim appears to haveentered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current. The man was rescued by bystanders and taken to shore, where he received treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross. However, he was declared lifeless at the scene." Wyatt tells PEOPLE that Cosby's son "played with Malcolm," calling the events that unfolded on July 20 "devastating." "He found a way to talk about Malcolm even though he was sad," Wyatt says of Cosby. NBCU Photo Bank via Getty "He had just done a concert in Minnesota and called Mr. Cosby and talked about it. They spoke all the time. He said 'Malcolm was changing humanity,'" Wyatt adds. Wyatt also notes that Cosby was finding comfort in hisCosby Showcostars. He says the actor was "on the phone withPhylicia Rashad[who played his onscreen wife Claire Huxtable] reminiscing about Malcolm" earlier today. Whilespeaking with PEOPLE in February 2023, Warner acknowledged how Cosby's legal woes have changed the way some fans remember the show. Cosby was sentenced tothree to 10 years in prisonin 2018 for charges involving drugging and sexually assaulting another woman. Pennsylvania's Supreme Courtoverturned his sexual assault convictionin 2021, allowing Cosby to be released. Five more women, however, sued Cosby for sexual assault in December. Cosby's defense has denied all allegations made against him. "Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I'm still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture," Warner told PEOPLE. NBCU Photo Bank via Getty In an interview with journalist Jemele Hill in 2023, Warner speculated that his fellow cast members might be "making a killing" today, if it weren't for the allegations against Cosby. Acknowledging a recent uptick in show reboots,Warner said, "We could have made a lot of money.Fuller House, they're doing their thing. The Conners, man, we'd be making a killing right now." Asked by Hill if he was "resentful" because "one person impacted you guys' lives and the way this show was seen," Warner responded: "No. Not resentment ... I get how this business works, for one. And just that whole situation is so layered, man." "I can't defend him or his actions at all. But I also can't throw him under the bus completely," Warner added. "Because I have an understanding of all the layers. It's so complex and it's so many shades of gray, that most people will never get. There is the piece of the financial hit that we all took but also it hasn't really affected my career." Warneralso reflected on Cosby's work ethicas recently as May 2025, during an appearance on Melyssa Ford'sHot & Botheredpodcast. During the episode, Warner said of Cosby: "He would work Monday through Thursday on the show, hop on a plane and do stand-up Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights, then be back to work first thing Monday." "This is while having the number one show in the world. And I watched that and it made me understand — when you are hot, that's when you grind," he added. Read the original article onPeople

Robin L Marshall/Getty Denise Richards' lawyer is speaking out after her estranged husbandAaron Phypersaccused her of cheating, drug use and physical abuse. In a statement to PEOPLE, Richards' divorce attorney Brett Berman denied the allegations and accused Phypers, 53, of abusing and harassing the 54-year-old actress. "In addition to the repeated abuse perpetrated by Mr. Phypers against Ms. Richards throughout the parties' marriage, Mr. Phypers has continued to harass Ms. Richards since being served with the Temporary Restraining Order by, among other things, disseminating private information from Ms. Richards' cell phone and laptop, which he stole," the statement read. "These actions continue to disturb Ms. Richards' peace." "We have warned Mr. Phypers in writing not to disseminate any information from Ms. Richards' stolen cell phone and laptop but, he continues to do so," the statement continues. "Ms. Richards will not be responding to Mr. Phypers' false allegations in a public forum, and will be addressing Mr. Phypers' abuse in Court." Arnold Jerocki/Getty In a response obtained by PEOPLE, Phypers refutes the claims made by Richards' lawyers. "Unfortunately, it seems Denise is experiencing another one of her now-infamous "upside-down jacket" moments — and her well-paid handlers appear determined to spin it upright, no matter the cost or collateral damage," he said, referencing an appearance Richards made inThe Real Housewives of Beverly Hillsseason 13 in which shewore her jacket upside-down. "We genuinely hope she receives the help and support she clearly needs. As Denise herself once famously slurred in a less-than-sober moment — words that now echo with irony — 'Stop it. I know what you are doing.'" Phypers continued, "Nothing was stolen, and nothing is missing — except, perhaps, Ms. Richards' moral compass." Phypers said that he found out about the alleged infidelity through text messages on Richards' laptop, tellingTMZhe discovered selfies that Richards and the other man sent to each other, as well as messages where they exchanged phrases such as "sweet dreams" and also indicated they wanted to meet up. Phypers said he and Richards decided to stay together after he confronted her about the alleged texts. He also accused Richards of hitting him, scratching him and smashing his phone. On July 20, Phypers accused Richards of being addicted to Vicodin in a letter to friends and family that was obtained byPage Six, and claimed that Richards needs an "intervention." "For nearly a decade, she has struggled with an addiction to Vicodin (which she jokingly calls 'Vitamin D' or 'white chestnuts'), mixed with Adderall and tequila," Phypers alleged. "Some of you know this has been an issue for over 20 years. She's no longer eating real meals, and I've witnessed her pass out from substances — putting herself and others in danger, including while driving with our daughter," he continued, referring toEloise, 14. He listed their date of separation as July 4 and cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason fortheir split, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE. Days after the filing, Richards accused Phypers of multiple instances of physical abuse, and she was latergranted a temporary restraining orderagainst him. Sol Ruca is capturing the attention of everyone in WWE: 'The sky's the limit for her'New Foto - Sol Ruca is capturing the attention of everyone in WWE: 'The sky's the limit for her'

You'd think Sol Ruca was born to wrestle. She has flashy moves, an acrobatic specialist who can move just about any way she desires. She's high-flying, willing to be the daredevil to make the crowd gasp while making it look effortless. The charisma has arrived and has blended with her in-ring talent. Plus, have you seen her finisher, the Sol Snatcher? She looks like a natural. Of all the women on the NXT roster, it's fair to say she has the highest ceiling among the young crop of stars. That's what makes this fact crazier: She has been wrestling for only three years. "I still am pretty, pretty green," Ruca told USA TODAY Sports. "I do feel like I am getting closer and closer to confidently saying, 'I think I got this.'" It certainly looks like she has the hang of it. The opportunities are crashing toward her like waves, and it's like she's on a surfboard, riding them flawlessly. She's the NXT Women's North American Champion and Women's Speed Champion, the latter of which could be considered a main roster title. She has appeared on SmackDown, allowing more of the WWE universe to get a first look and be wowed by the talent. And it's not just fans who are enthralled by her, but plenty of wrestlers are taking notice of "the future" of the business. Wrestling wasn't part of Ruca's childhood. Instead, it was gymnastics. From Ontario, California, Ruca – whose actual name is Calyx Hampton – spent much of her youth at Wildfire Gymnastics in Orange County. Starting there at the age of 8, Ruca was already collecting hardware in California, winning state and regional titles during her 10 years with the club. She committed to Oregon's acrobatics and tumbling team before her senior year of high school. In Eugene, she was a vital member of a Ducks squad that reached the national semifinals every year she was there. It wasn't until after Ruca graduated college that WWE reached out to her about trying out. She was a social media influencer, showing off her acrobatic skills that piqued the interest of WWE. In March 2022, Ruca became one of the new recruits at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, and quickly impressed trainers. Although gymnastics and wrestling share some similar aspects, it was a dramatic learning curve for someone just getting in the business. Someone who really helped with learning the ropes was Alba Fyre. Ruca recalled a time Fyre was helping classes and when she locked up with her, Ruca realized "this is how it should feel. This is what it's all about." It clicked, and she was ready to run with it. Ruca made her in-ring debut just three months after reporting. It was a hot first year, and she went viral when she debuted the Sol Snatcher, a springboard flip cutter that stunned fans. "I felt like I could pick up moves pretty quickly and the fundamentals pretty quickly, just because that's what gymnastics was," Ruca said. It took around a month for Ruca to come up with the Sol Snatcher. The original version of the move was to be a stunner instead of a cutter, but it meant Ruca landing on her bottom, which would eventually get painful. "I had to workshop that a little bit, and decided that the cutter was just the best option for longevity and executing it flawlessly," she said. Ruca practiced the move on a squishy ring at the performance center and eventually built up the courage to try it in a match. Now, she arguably has one of the most exciting finishers in the company. She wouldn't say hers is the best in all of wrestling, but if you just consider the "flashy, flippy" wrestling, she'll say she's at the top. "I'm happy that I tried it when I did, because once I did that, it went viral, and I kind of just shot off from there," Ruca added. Ruca was picking up steam, but it came to a screeching halt when she suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in April 2023. It could have been a major setback for someone on the rise. Turns out it was a blessing in disguise. For as impressive as Ruca was, it was a challenge learning to wrestle – especially when it was all new to her. Yes, you have to physically perform, but there are mental aspects that were really testing a former athlete. "In order to really grasp professional wrestling, you need to know the psychology," she said. "You need to know how to put a match together, and I think that is probably the hardest thing for most athletes. Being able to be in a match and be in the moment, instead of just doing all your stuff and hitting hard and doing all that, you have to actually put on a whole performance and put on a character in a show. "In athletics, you don't get that opportunity. You have to be serious the whole time. So I think that's another thing that athletes, as well as myself, struggle with at first." It was during her injury recovery when Ruca got to just take time to observe. Actually watch wrestling. See what the best of the business do. Just study it instead of studying and performing at the same time, which led to feeling a bit lost at times. By the time she was cleared to return, Ruca was a "completely different person" who understood how to succeed. "I had a better understanding of what I was doing. I had more of a set goal of how I want to be perceived and kind of like how I want to portray myself on TV," she said. "I think just having that time off, it was tough, but I think it was definitely necessary for my career to be able to just take a step back." Since then, Ruca has been on a tear. She has become a bonafide wrestler, looking far from a person who is still in their formative years of being in the ring. Not only is she capturing attention for her skills, but she's also stealing hearts with her personality. Ruca has also formed a partnership with Zaria, dubbed ZaRuca, that has become a fan favorite friendship. It all led into what was a massive April for Ruca. She won the Women's Speed title, and in the same week, won the NXT Women's North American Championship in a thrilling six-person ladder match at Stand and Deliver, becoming one of the big winners of WrestleMania weekend. She's still a double champion, and now seemingly working almost any and all shows. "It's been crazy, to be honest," she said. "Going from nothing to double champion and getting the opportunity, not only to work with NXT talent, but going up to Raw, Smackdown and defending the Speed title against people that I've never been in the ring with before. I just feel like I'm getting so much more experience this way, and I'm just improving every single time I go out there." Ruca has certainly caught the eye of wrestlers on all levels of WWE. Jordynne Grace, who has officially been with the company for six months, has noticed who is the future of the company in NXT. She feels like she can tell who could be in the main event of WrestleMania one day. When asked by USA TODAY Sports which star Grace thought of, the first one who came to mind was Ruca. "You've seen her wrestle. It's actually ridiculous," Grace said. "She's been wrestling, what, two to three years at this point? So, you can only imagine what she's going to be able to do in the future." And she has the attention of arguably the most decorated woman in WWE.Charlotte Flaircompeted against Ruca in thefatal four-way tag team championship match at Evolution, and was the recipient of a Sol Snatcher. That interaction has the 16-time champion already itching for a match, knowing the potential. "I'm looking forward to a one-on-one with Sol Ruca," Flair said. "I just think the sky's the limit for her." View this post on Instagram A post shared by WWE (@wwe) All of the opportunities and praise could certainly get to Ruca's head, but it's far from reality. A permanent residence on the main roster is the goal of every NXT star, but Ruca feels like her time on the brand is far from over. She still is constantly learning and in need of it, while wanting all critiques and criticism with it. She also feels like getting that main roster experience helps her training with fellow NXT stars so they can improve their stock. Did a lot of work and pressure find Ruca quickly? Sure, but she's ready for it. She's excited to "show the world what I got," proving she has the makings of a major star. There's no telling how far Ruca can go. Not bad for someone just getting into wrestling. "I love where I'm at, and can't wait to keep doing it," Ruca said. Don't be fooled by Trump using Washington Commanders name as a distraction | OpinionNew Foto - Don't be fooled by Trump using Washington Commanders name as a distraction | Opinion

Do not fall forDonald Trump's latest con. Do you really think he cares one bit about what the NFL team in Washington calls itself? Or whether Cleveland's baseball team goes by the Guardians or something else? In fact, I'd venture to guess Trump couldn't even have told you what Cleveland's current nickname was a few days ago. But pretending he isoutraged! just outraged! that Washington and Cleveland ditched their problematic nicknamescreates a distraction from the growing questions aboutTrump's close friendship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epsteinand everything that entailed. There's no scandal Trump hasn't been able to outrun by injecting "anti-wokeness" into the conversation, and this is more of the same. He's like the Wizard of Oz, only with more racism and a dog whistle instead of a curtain. Which should be obvious to all but his most-diehard supporters. It was, after all, only two weeks ago that Trump expressed what was essentially indifference for Washington's current nickname. "I wouldn't have changed the name. It just doesn't have the same, it doesn't have the same ring to me,"he said July 7."But, you know, winning can make everything sound good. So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good." Contrast that to his screed Sunday on Truth Social, where Trump attacked Washington and Cleveland for changing their names and even threatened the Commanders' new stadium because of it. Never mind that it's likely too late for that, given the federal government has already transferred the land to the District of Colombia. "If they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington Redskins,' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington," Trump wrote. So what could possibly have changed in the last two weeks? The unrelenting furor over Epstein and scrutiny of Trump's connections to him. OPINION:Washington Commanders shouldn't let Trump bully them in nickname battle | Opinion One of the few things this country can agree on is thatEpstein was a garbage human being. He sexually abused girls and underage young women himself, and trafficked them to his rich and powerful friends for similar purposes. He effectively avoided accountability for his crimes, accepting asweetheart dealon state charges in 2008 anddying by suicide in 2019while awaiting trial on federal charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex. While there has been a want for more answers in Epstein's case — did he really commit suicide? who were his clients? — it has become a particular obsession among the right wing and Trump supporters. Trump leaned into this, saying during the 2024 campaign thathe would declassify the Epstein filesif elected. In February, U.S. Attorney GeneralPam Bondisaid Epstein's client list was"sitting on my desk right now"and suggested it would be released. But earlier this month, the DOJ released a statement saying, "Oops. Never mind."Epstein had killed himself and there was no client list, according to the DOJ. No proof Epstein had tried to blackmail anyone, either. It was a curious about-face from folks who have spent years promoting conspiracy theories about Epstein and demanding answers about who else was involved, and it'sinfuriated many in MAGA world. And unlike previous scandals involving Trump, which have had all the staying power of Jell-O, this one won't go away. The angrier about that Trump gets, the more questions it raises. More:Native Americans rail against Trump's call to change Commanders' name back. Epstein and Trump's friendship is well-documented. There are multiple photos of the two of them, Trump's name is on flight logs for Epstein's private jet and Trump toldNew York Magazine in 2002that Epstein was a "terrific guy" who "likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side." Now, however, even some of Trump's supporters are wondering if there was more to it than that. Media outlets are probing their friendship. Lawmakers, Republicans and Democrats alike, are demanding the Trump administration release all the information they have on Epstein. Used to directing the narrative, Trump has lost control of it, and he's pulling out all the stops to change that. He's trieddownplayingit. He's tried his old favorite ofblaming Democrats. He's even triedinsulting the people who've been his steadfast supporterssince the day he came down that escalator. Now he's using the Commanders, Guardians and their decisions to drop offensive nicknames to create a smokescreen, the modern-day equivalent of, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain." But just like Dorothy and her friends, the American people can recognize desperation when they see it. Follow USA TODAY Sports columnist Nancy Armour on social media @nrarmour. Late Night Hosts Make Surprise Appearance on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' Amid Cancelationoriginally appeared onParade. CBS sent shock waves through the entertainment world last week when it announced the cancelation ofThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, an institution at the network for over 30 years. While the network stated the decision was "purely financial," many people—including Colbert's formerDaily Showco-star Jon Stewart—believe it has something to do with Colbert's brazen criticism of President Donald Trump. In addition to going on along ranton his own show about the cancelation, Stewart showed up to his old friend's show on Monday night to show his support—and so did Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and John Oliver. It was a late night host soirée! 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 They weren't the only ones who showed up, either. They, along with other stars like "Weird" Al Yankovic, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adam Sandler, and Andy Cohen.Deadlinesummed up the skit beautifully. It began with Yankovic and Miranda singing a Coldplay song, and the camera turned to the audience to reveal the cavalcade of celebs. Cohen was stage-kissing his "BFF" Anderson Cooper and NBC hosts Fallon and Meyers casually pounded back brews. Meanwhile, Colbert's formerDaily Showco-stars took a more active, aggressive approach, flipping the bird right at the camera. Suddenly, Colbert demanded the music come to a stop. "It says here," he said referencing a letter he'd just opened, "this is purely a financial decision." When theHamiltonstar asked him to elaborate, Colbert replied, "Since you started playing that song, the network has lost, and I don't know how this is possible, $40M-$50M." The joke was a clear tongue-in-cheek reference to CBS' announcement heard 'round the world. The gag also alluded that Colbert believes the cancelation was due to political pressure. The camera showed a cartoon Trump sitting in the audience, and Miranda said, "Tell me this has nothing to do with who we put a spotlight on." Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Happy 12th birthday,Prince George! On July 22,Kate MiddletonandPrince William, both 43, shared a new portrait to celebrate their eldest son's birthday, continuing theirroyal traditionthat started when George was a baby. The custom later extended to his two younger siblings, 10-year-oldPrincess Charlotteand 7-year-oldPrince Louis, who also mark their birthdays each year with a new photo revealed to the public. In the photo, taken by photographer Josh Shinner earlier this year in Norfolk, George can be seen resting his arms on a fence as he smiles at the camera. He wears a white and blue checked shirt with a brown fleece gilet over the top. "Happy 12th Birthday to Prince George! 🎂 📸@joshshinner," the photo was captioned. This birthday marks a meaningful moment for George: it's his final year before stepping into his teenage years. As he grows older, his role in the royal family as future king will gradually become more visible — but for now, his parents continue to prioritize privacy and balance. As in previous years, Prince George — second in line to the throne after his father, Prince William — is celebrating his birthday privately with his family. His most recent public outing was just over a week ago, when hejoined his parents and sister at Wimbledon. George looked sharp in a suit and tie (complete with stylish sunglasses!) while taking in the men's singles final match from the front row of the Royal Box at Centre Court. Karwai Tang/WireImage The young royal has taken after his parents when it comes to his love of sports. He is regularly spotted in thestands of soccer gamesalongside Prince William, often supporting Aston Villa, and when doubles champion Julian Cash asked George about his own tennis skills when they met at Wimbledon, theprince humbly replied, "I'm alright." Prince George also made two appearances on the Buckingham Palace balcony this year: at Trooping the Colour in June and at an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day in May. In a surprise move, Prince George alsojoined his parents in hosting a Buckingham Palace tea party for veteransduring the May event. His first time appearing at such a formal royal function showed how Prince William and Princess Kate are slowly introducing their son to his future royal role. At 12, Prince George will have his last year of classes at Lambrook School in Windsor, where Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis also go to school. However, there will be changes in store after he turns 13 next year. The young prince will reportedly follow in his father's footsteps and attend the all-boys school Eton College. Though the Prince and Princess of Wales explored avariety of options— including Kate's coed alma mater, Marlborough College — a source recently told theMail on Sundaythat "all roads lead to Eton." According to the outlet, insiders say there's a "smugness" about the pending announcement from the prestigious boys-only school: "It was like: 'I know something, and the people at Eton know something, but I'm not going to tell you.' " Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty When Prince William turned 12, a royal protocol was put in place that prevented him from traveling with the rest of his family, a precaution to protect the future of the monarchy in case of a tragic accident. King Charles' former pilot, Graham Laurie, recalled the royal change on a 2023 episode ofA Right Royal Podcast, saying, "Interestingly, we flew all four: the Prince [Charles], thePrincess [Diana], Prince William andPrince Harry, up until Prince William was 12 years old. After that, he had to have a separate aircraft, and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty," referring to then-monarchQueen Elizabeth. It remains to be seen whether Prince William and Princess Kate will follow the same approach with Prince George now that he's 12. The couple has been intentional about giving their children as normal an upbringing as possible, even as they prepare for future royal roles — a noticeable shift from past generations. For instance, when King Charles was a child, he was often left in the care of nannies and his grandmother while Queen Elizabeth embarked on extended royal tours. "You can't see this couple doing that," asource previously told PEOPLEof William and Kate. Read the original article onPeople

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott left the game in the ninth inning Monday night after feeling pain in his left pitching arm. It occurred when Scott was pitching to Minnesota's Ryan Jeffers with one out. "He said it felt like a sting," manager Dave Roberts said, adding that an X-ray and manual testing didn't reveal any issues. Scott will have an MRI on Tuesday. However, Roberts said it's likely Scott will need to go on the injured list. "Hopefully it's something that's more of a scare and then we can kind of put him on ice for a little bit and get him back," he said. Scott is 1-2 with a 4.14 ERA and a team-leading 19 saves this season. He gave up a run and walked two on 22 pitches in two-thirds of an inning before leaving the game. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Self-identified "far-right conservatives" rush to debate "progressive" Mehdi Hasan during the July 20, 2025, episode of Jubilee Media's Surrounded.

Hasanrose to fameon both sides of the Atlantic for his confrontational interviews of politicians and public figures, often advocating a left-of-center view on Al Jazeera, BBC, The Intercept,MSNBC, and now his own Substack siteZeteo. But the author of a book titledWin Every Argumenthas also spoken about when not to take part in a debate. "There are certain people who there is no point arguing with," hesaidin 2023, pointing specifically to those who operate in bad faith. "It's pointless. It doesn't go anywhere." It may have come as a surprise then to many of Hasan's fans to see him arguing less againstalternative factsthan againstself-proclaimed fascistson the latest episode of Jubilee Media'sSurrounded. I debated 20 far-far-far-right conservatives on Jubilee's 'Surrounded.'Below are some brief highlights of them unable to answer my basic questions or rebut the simplest of points. Not sure whether to laugh or cry. Here's the full eye-opening 'debate':https://t.co/VG2vnik1J0pic.twitter.com/vCewUHAKfg — Mehdi Hasan (@mehdirhasan)July 20, 2025 The one-versus-many debate web series has repeatedly gone viral since its premiere in September, featuring episodes from "Can 25 Liberal College Students Outsmart 1 Conservative?" to "Can 1 Woke Teen Survive 20 Trump Supporters?" and "Can 1 Cop Defend Himself Against 20 Criminals?" Hasan appeared as the titular progressive in the 100-minute "1 Progressive vs 20 Far-Right Conservatives," which has garnered more than 3.5 million views and counting on YouTube since it was posted on Sunday and millions more views of clips shared on social media. But Hasan was the first to admit that hedidn't expectwhat he would encounter. "You can see my shock when they start expressing their views openly," Hasanposted on Xin response to a critic who suggested he eagerly signed up to debate "a bunch of nazis." According toZeteo, Jubilee Media "chose the participants, with Mehdi meeting them for the first time in the studio itself." Hasan, whose supporters have showered him with praise for his performance, claimed in the final minutes of the program, during which participants assessed the debate, that he was both taken aback but also unsurprised by the extreme views he met: "I thought it would be an interesting exercise in trying to understand what genuine far-right conservative folks think. And it was kind of disturbing to see that they think what I thought they think, and they were happy to say it out loud. I am disappointed that I had to sit across from people who believe in white genocide, who believe I'm not a citizen. … The people here today were way beyond conservative." While Hasan admitted he likes to debate "even people I disagree with," he reiterated that he tries to "avoid bad faith folks" and said, "I think some of the folks today were bad faith." He also seemed to criticize Jubilee's airing of such extreme views, adding: "Free speech doesn't mean you need to give credibility or oxygen or a platform to people who don't agree in human equality." "This is open authoritarianism, and this is what is being normalized and mainstreamed in our country, by people in power, by the media, by people who don't know any better," Hasan said. But some observers online have suggested that Hasan himself should have known better about what he signed up for. Jubilee Mediasaysits mission is to "provoke understanding" and "create human connection." And, according to itswebsite, "We believe discomfort and conflict are pivotal forces in creating human connection." The company has since 2017 produced a number of web series on dating, identity, politics, and more. "We want to show what discourse can and should look like. Sometimes it can be unproductive but other times it can be quite productive and empathetic," founder Jason Y. LeetoldVarietyin late 2024 for an article aboutSurrounded, which according to the article has a goal to "promote open dialogue," for which Jubilee sees itself as a neutral host. "We try our best to be as unbiased as possible when it comes to the political sphere," said Lee. For the most part, Jubilee's debate series appears to be unmoderated, governed primarily by the participants themselves, with occasional on-screen fact-checks provided by billionaire Joe Ricketts' media startupStraight Arrow News. But critics have questioned the company's supposedly noble aspirations. "Jubilee Media mines the nation's deepest disagreements for rowdy viral videos. But is all the arguing changing anyone's mind?"the Atlanticaskedin January. Media reporter Julia Alexander suggested on X that the program's producers are the ones operating in bad faith. "Jubilee Media's done it again: taking 20 people with extremist views and putting them into a 90 minute video knowing that they'll say extreme things and get an extreme amount of attention," shepostedon Sunday after the Hasan episode. They've figured out, Alexander added, "how to monetize the very essence of the internet." Filmmaker and entrepreneur Minh Dopostedthat Jubilee's producers "are mainly interested in clickbait views and incendiary clips that don't lead anyone to think any deeper about these topics" rather than any sense of responsibility to the public. "Senseless conversation purely for views." "It only takes watching a couple clips of these to see that the fix is in,"postedpodcaster Alex Goldman. Writer and disability rights advocate Imani Barbarin, whoshared in Marchthat she turned down an invitation from Jubilee to appear in aSurroundedepisode about feminism, posted a videoMonday in which she decried how she believed the debate-style program was made for viral moments, not serious engagement. "That very same debate where Mehdi Hasan was standing up to 20 fascists or whatever, where you all think he won, is being cut up and chopped up across the internet to present it as though he lost," Barbarin said. Indeed, one only needs to scroll through the social media pages ofsomeoftheparticipantsto see them taking victory laps and theirsupporterspraisingtheir performances. "This," Barbarin emphasized, "is what the memeification of politics looks like in practice." Contact usatletters@time.com.
