Verlander finds bottle of his favorite wine waiting at his locker after elusive 1st win with GiantsNew Foto - Verlander finds bottle of his favorite wine waiting at his locker after elusive 1st win with Giants

ATLANTA (AP) — Justin Verlander had good reason to fear the worst when rain began to fall at Truist Park on Wednesday, sending fans scurrying for cover in the fifth inning when he still needed three outs to qualify for his elusive first win in a Giants uniform. San Francisco led 3-0 when the 42-year-old Verlander was forced to consider if bad luck again would extend a winless streak that already ranked as the longest in a season in Giants history. "I didn't know. I figured something like that would happen," Verlander said. "This would be the game that gets rained out or we have a two-hour delay and they don't let me go back out." Instead, there was no delay. Verlander pitched through the light rain to complete the fifth inning of San Francisco's9-3 winover the Atlanta Braves. He allowed only one hit and overcame five walks, including three in the first inning, to throw five scoreless innings. Following the game, teammates who had been pulling for the three-time Cy Young Award winner's first win of the season placed a bottle of Verlander's favorite wine at his locker. "It's awesome," said Matt Chapman, whose two-run homer in the fifth helped put Verlander in position for the win. "We've wanted so badly to get him that first win." When asked how he would celebrate it, Verlander said, "I'll probably have a little bit of that (wine)." The win was more than a personal drought-breaker for Verlander. It gave the Giants the series win after Tuesday night's9-0 victoryended a six-game losing streak. "The division is still not out of reach," Chapman said of the NL West race. The Giants are third in the division and began the day 2 1/2 games out of an NL wild-card spot. Verlander (1-8) was winless in his first 16 starts, the longest stretch by a Giants pitcher in a single season in franchise history. The right-hander finalized a$15 million, one-year dealwith San Francisco in January and missed one month witha strained right pectoral muscleearly in the season. He took a 4.99 ERA into Wednesday's game but had received only 26 total runs from Giants hitters in his 16 starts. "It's been a tough stretch for me, physically and on the mound a bit," Verlander said. The nine-time All-Star was in danger of not surviving the first inning. Thanks to the three walks, Verlander needed 40 pitches to make it through the inning, which ended with a fly ball to the warning track in center field by Michael Harris II. Giants manager Bob Melvin already was considering bringing a reliever into the game. "To get through the first was huge for us," Melvin said, adding that Verlander's first win was "great." "We knew it every time he goes out there," Melvin said. "Guys try extra hard and for some reason it hadn't worked out." Chapman was hit by a pitch on his left elbow in the seventh inning. Melvin said X-rays were negative. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

USC commit Alijah Arenas sidelined 6-8 months with knee injury after return from car crashNew Foto - USC commit Alijah Arenas sidelined 6-8 months with knee injury after return from car crash

USC will likely be without star recruit Alijah Arenas next season. Arenas, who is the son of former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas, went down with a torn meniscus on Wednesday, according toinsider Chris Haynes. Theschool confirmedthat Arenas suffered a knee injury, and said that he would be out for six to eight months recovering — which puts his entire 2025-26 season in jeopardy. The injury came just a few months afterArenas was involved in a car crash and placed into a medically induced coma. He crashed his Tesla Cybertruck into a fire hydrant and tree in Southern California in April while on his way back from the gym. He revealed last month that he was actually stuck inside for nearly 10 minutes as the car caught on fire, and struggled to escape. Eventually, he was able to break through the drivers side window and escape. Arenas was deemed stable at the scene of the accident, but he was taken to a local hospital and eventually placed in a medically induced coma due to smoke inhalation. He spent six days in the hospital, but avoided major injuries. Arenas is a five-star Rivals.com recruit out of Chatsworth High School in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. He helped lead the school to the CIF Division II state title game in March, and he left as the all-time L.A. City Section scoring leader. He held offers from other top basketball schools, including Kansas and Kentucky, before landing on USC. The Trojans went just 17-18 last season, the first under new head coach Eric Musselman, and missed the NCAA tournament for a second straight year. Arenas was one of two players to commit to the Trojans this offseason, along with four-star guard Jerry Easter.

There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solvetoday's puzzlebefore reading further!Romance Trope (Freestyle) Constructor:Sam Cordes Editor:Amanda Rafkin ONEIDA (4D: People whose men wear kastowehs) The ONEIDA are one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee, an Iroquoian-speaking confederacy of Indigenous and First Nations peoples in northeast North America. Kastowehs are traditional Iroquois headdresses. Kastowehs worn by ONEIDA men bear the tribe's insignia, three eagle feathers – two up and one down. SPAMMING (8D: Repeatedly using the same action in a video game) I was not familiar with the meaning of SPAMMING as it relates to video gaming. I am, of course, familiar with SPAMMING in the sense of sending the same email message repeatedly to multiple users. As the clue explains, SPAMMING in reference to video gaming is similar; it refers to using one action repeatedly. In learning about this definition of SPAMMING, I also learned that there is a bit of discussion amongst gamers about what exactly constitutes SPAMMING. MLEM (14D: Internet slang for a cat sticking its tongue out) The word MLEM is new to me! Somehow I have missed learning that MLEM has come to mean the act of an animal sticking its tongue out. It can also be used to refer to the sound made by such an action. I do have a photo to illustrate a MLEM, courtesy of my cat, Willow. OMAN (12A: Only country whose name begins with "O") OMAN is a West Asian country located on the Arabian peninsula. The capital of OMAN is Muscat. This clue shares the fun fact that OMAN is the only country whose name begins with the letter O. MANGA (18A: "Naruto," e.g.)Narutois a Japanese MANGA and anime series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. The title character is a young ninja who dreams of becoming the leader of his village. NOTARIES (25A: Officials who leave an impression?) NOTARIES are officials who witness and verify signatures on documents. This is often acknowledged with the use of a special seal or stamp. Therefore, while NOTARIES may "leave an impression," as in "have a memorable effect on you," the wordplay in this clue (as indicated by the question mark) is that they "leave an impression" by "stamping a document." ORA (44A: "For You" singer Rita) "For You" is a 2018 song by Rita ORA and Liam Payne. The song was included on the soundtrack to the movieFifty Shades Freed. Rita ORA also appeared in the movie, as Mia Grey. SHE BOP (45A: 1984 Cyndi Lauper hit)"SHE BOP"is a 1984 song from Cyndi Lauper's debut album,She's So Unusual. When the song was first released, it was considered controversial because it deals with female masturbation. The Parents Music Resource Committee, a group founded in 1985 aimed at increasing parental control over children's access to music, included "SHE BOP" on its"Filthy Fifteen"list. RED ROVER (47A: Chain-breaking playground game) Ah, this clue / answer pair brought back memories of many hours spent on the elementary school playground shouting, "RED ROVER, RED ROVER, send (child's name) right over!" I never really enjoyed this game, because, not being an athletic type, I was frequently a target. RED ROVER has been banned by many schools because of the potential for injury. DALE (57A: "Chip 'n ___: Rescue Rangers")Chip 'n DALE: Rescue Rangers(1989-1990) is an animated TV series featuring the title chipmunks operating a detective agency named Rescue Rangers.Chip 'n DALE: Rescue Rangersis also the name of a 2022 live action/animated movie based on the TV series. The movie, which is set 30 years after the TV series, is set in a world where fictional characters live alongside humans. GOSH (63A: "Shiver me timbers," to a non-pirate) When I read this clue I thought, "I've never thought about what 'Shiver me timbers' actually means." GOSH, now I know! ANTS (64A: Many "A Bug's Life" characters)A Bug's Lifeis a 1998 animated movie whose plot was inspired by the Aesop fable,The ANT and the Grasshopper. There are a number of ANTS inA Bug's Life. AOL (1D: "You've Got Mail" company) This clue is a nice bonus entry. The capital letters in "You've Got Mail" alert solvers that this clue is talking not just about the catchphrase used by America Online (AOL), but specifically about the 1998 rom-comYou've Got Mail. The movie stars Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks who don't exactly start the movie as BITTER ENEMIES, but only because Meg Ryan's character doesn't know the true identity of Tom Hanks' character. The two definitely end up becoming LOVE INTERESTS. RABBIT HOLE (3D: You might fall down one while reading Wikipedia articles) Welcome to my world! I fall down a Wikipedia RABBIT HOLE on a regular basis while writing "Off the Grid." STARR (26D: Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayra) In 2019,Ayra STARRbegan uploading covers of songs on Instagram. Then she posted an original song, and that led to a record contract with Nigerian label, Mavin Records, and a 2021 album titled19 & Dangerous. EUROVISION (28D: Song contest that ABBA won in 1974) The EUROVISION Song Contest is an international competition in which participants representing European countries sing original songs. Countries then cast votes to determine the winner. EUROVISION has been held annually since 1956 (with the exception of 2020). As the clue informs us, ABBA won EUROVISION in 1974. The represented Sweden with their song,"Waterloo." SCARES (29D: Emulates a Monsters, Inc. employee)Monsters, Inc.is a 2001 animated Pixar movie. The movie is set in the city of Monstropolis. At the Monsters, Inc. factory, monsters venture into the human world to SCARE children. SADIE (38D: ___ Hawkins dance) For a SADIE Hawkins dance, girls invite boys to be their dates, rather than vice versa. The dance is named after a character in Al Capp'sLi'l Abnercomic strip. ORTEGA (48D: "Miller's Girl" actress Jenna)Miller's Girlis a 2024 movie in which Jenna ORTEGA portrays a high school senior who enters into a complicated relationship with her creative writing teacher (portrayed by Martin Freeman). A few other clues I especially enjoyed: PASTRIES (5D: Desserts whose letters can aptly be found in "patisserie") KMART (34D: "Attention ___ shoppers...") THE (60D: Word ignored when alphabetizing) ROMANCE TROPE (Freestyle): There's no theme today as this is a freestyle, or themeless, puzzle. The title is a nod to two answers: BITTER ENEMIES (19A: They might make each other's blood boil) LOVE INTERESTS (52A: They might make each other's hearts race) This puzzle is an example of my favorite kind of themeless puzzle, one in which some of the answers relate to each other, making it "themed-ish." In this case, the puzzle's two long answers are hinting at the classic ROMANCE TROPE – two people who start out as BITTER ENEMIES and end up as LOVE INTERESTS. I really enjoyed these two answers and the way their clues were written. Thank you, Sam, for this delightful puzzle. Cardinals' 1st-round DT Walter Nolen injures calf, will miss most, if not all of training campNew Foto - Cardinals' 1st-round DT Walter Nolen injures calf, will miss most, if not all of training camp

The Arizona Cardinals and first-round rookie Walter Nolen suffered a tough blow at the top of training camp. Nolen suffered a calf injury at the team facility on Wednesday. Head coachJonathan Gannon announced the injury, telling media that he's "gonna miss some time."Per NFL Network, the 21-year-old defensive tackle will miss most if not all of training camp. The precise nature of the injury wasn't immediately clear, nor was a long-term timeline or prognosis. The injuryprompted the Cardinals to place Nolen on the physically unable to perform list. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The Cardinals selected Nolen with the 16th pick out of Ole Miss. A consensus All-American during his junior season at Ole Miss, Nolen was projected to anchor the interior of Arizona's defensive line as a rookie. A capable pass rusher who can create pressure up the middle, Nolen recorded 6.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, 3 passes defended and 2 forced fumbles in 13 games for Mississippi last season. The injury at the very least puts his NFL development on hold. The Cardinals and Nolen are certainly hoping that it doesn't continue to sideline him into the regular season that starts with a Week 1 matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 7. The Cardinals enter 2025 hoping to compete in the NFC West and improve on an 8-9 record from last season.

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies ended a dubious streak by recording a zero. Rookie right-hander Tanner Gordon pitched six innings and theRockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0on Wednesday for their first shutout since May 15, 2024, ending a record streak of 220 games since they last kept an opponent from scoring. "I did not know that. ... That's a long time without a shutout," Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. "But I'm glad we shut them out today. That was good behind Gordon. Gordon did a fantastic job." Colorado is the only major league team since at least 1901 to go more than 200 games without a shutout victory, according to Stathead and Baseball Reference. The last shutout for the Rockies had been8-0 at San Diegoin their only one last season. Their previous one at home was2-0 over the Athleticson July 30, 2023. Freeman did it twice that season, with one-hit ball over 8 1/3 innings of a 10-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on July 9, after going seven innings in an 8-0 victory over San Francisco on April 23. The Rockies (26-76) have won consecutive series for the first time this season, taking two of three games from the Cardinals after coming out of the All-Star break bywinning two of three against Minnesotalast weekend. NASCAR reveals new street course race in San Diego for 2026New Foto - NASCAR reveals new street course race in San Diego for 2026

Two years ago, theNASCARCup Series made history with the sport's inaugural street course race through Chicago. Since the first race in 2023, the course's been a unique challenge for drivers on the grid. Next year, they'll have a new street course to prepare for. NASCAR officials announcedthat a new street course in San Diego will debut in the 2026 Cup Series season. The race will be held on Naval Base Coronado and replace the Chicago Street Course on the calendar. Project: Race the Base. We're bringing a different kind of speed to@USNavyBase Coronado in 2026.pic.twitter.com/A3mRh2x8bN — NASCAR (@NASCAR)July 23, 2025 There will be three days of action from San Diego next year with the Craftsman Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Cup Series all competing in NASCAR's second-ever street course. It'll be a historic venue in its own right; this will be NASCAR's first race on a naval base. The race weekend will mark the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy. "What a special way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Navy, 250th anniversary of our country and put on what is going to be undoubtedly the most anticipated event of 2026," NASCAR executive vice president Ben Kennedy said in a statement. "And I'm bullish on it being the best sporting event of the year." Lawsuit latest:Updates on 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports vs. NASCAR lawsuit Here's what we know about the event. NASCAR's race weekend in San Diego will be June 19-21, 2026, during Father's Day weekend. That weekend also coincides with the anniversary of the U.S. Navy and will take that weekend from the Pocono race from the 2025 calendar. The official course layout has yet to be released. NASCAR officials state that they're driving around the base in person and using the popular racing simulation video game iRacing to help iron out the layout. They used iRacing for both the Clash at the Los Angeles Coliseum and Chicago street race events. The course will likely use Naval Air Station North Island's streets as well as the runway tarmac. Officials expect the circuit will be roughly three miles in length. By comparison, the Chicago Street Course is 2.14 miles. "It'll be a blend of traditional street racing in a way where we'll be winding our ways through some of the streets on the base," Kennedy said in a statement. "They'll be going past (aircraft) carriers. They'll eventually go out onto the tarmac, probably by some military aircraft, maybe a couple of F-18s out there, and then back towards the entrance to the base." From 1997 through 2024, the Cup Series had a race in Southern California every year with one exception - 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The 2025 season is the first without a race in the area for no restricted reason since 1996. NASCAR's military ties, options for tarmac and street sections and the backdrop of downtown San Diego made the naval base a worthwhile venue. "We contemplated a number of places, not just in San Diego, but the greater Southern California region," Kennedy said. "Naturally, I think we all started to gravitate towards the military base, seeing that we knew that the 250th anniversary was upcoming, our natural ties that we have to the military and then the location of it. I mean, you couldn't ask for a better location than Coronado, sitting between downtown San Diego, the Pacific Ocean and not far from Tijuana, either." No specific number of events has been confirmed, but it's very likely San Diego will have at least three years, much like Chicago and Los Angeles Coliseum events. NASCAR confirmed it will not return to Chicago in 2026 but did not rule out a return in the future.
