Chuck Mangione, the Grammy-winning flugelhorn and trumpet player and prolific jazz musician known for songs including "Feels So Good" and "Children of Sanchez," has died. Mangione died in his sleep Tuesday in his home in Rochester, N.Y., his manager Peter S. Matorin confirmed to The Times on Thursday. He was 84. The New York native, over the course of his career which began in the 1960s, earned a reputation as a stylish, lyrically smart trumpeter and played alongside jazz giants Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Sam Jones, Ron Carter and Kai Winding. He also collected 14 Grammy nominations, notably winning two prizes: one for his smooth "Bellavia" in 1977 and another a year later for the titular anthem he composed for the 1978 drama "The Children of Sanchez." His emphasis on melodic music — frowned upon by some hard-line jazz fans — was best heard in his chart-topping hit "Feels So Good," the title track of his 1977 album. The single became synonymous with Mangione and helped propel him into the mainstream. Notably, Mangione and his megahit were a running gag on the popular animated series "King of the Hill," in which he lent his voice to several episodes. "Feels So Good" was also referenced in "Friends," "The Big Bang Theory" and Marvel's "Doctor Strange" film in 2016. Though parts of the jazz community dismissed Mangione's work as lightweight and too pop, the composer saw divisive reaction to his music as a rite of passage. "I've read all the reviews, from the ones that say you're the greatest thing since sliced bread to the others who say they left at intermission," he toldThe Times in 1988. "This kind of thing happened to Cannonball Adderley, who incidentally produced my first album in 1960; it happened to Herbie Hancock and a lot of other people." "I don't respond to pressure from record companies or critics; my reviewers are the audiences, and besides, my only severe critic is me," he added at the time. His love for jazz music stemmed from his father, who was a fan of the genre. Mangione's prolific career is also rooted in his teen years, when he performed with pianist brother Gap Mangione as the Jazz Brothers and jammed in small Rochester clubs with visiting artists including Gillespie and Jones. It was Gillespie, Mangionerecalled in 1994, who recommended that the "Give It All You Got" musician join the Jazz Messengers. While touring with Blakey, Mangione recorded his first set of albums including 1966's "Buttercorn Lady." In the late '60s, Mangione formed his own quartet, featuring his childhood friend Gerry Niewood. Fostering his new, softer sound, Mangione released the album "Land of Make Believe" in 1973. The album and title track, featuring the vocals of Esther Satterfield, both earned Grammy nominations. Mangione, who moved from A&M Records to CBS Records in 1982, had a steady output of music through 1988. He toldThe Timesthat year that he faced pressure to duplicate the styles that led to his earlier success. "That's not what I want to do; I just write whatever music I feel like writing, and that has to be my next album," he said. Mangione famously composed his hit "Give It All You Got" for the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, performing the number at the closing ceremony. He released his final album, "Everything for Love," in 2000 and retired in 2015. Mangione graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a bachelor's degree in music. Later in life, he would return to Eastman as an instructor and begin its jazz program. He also received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, earned recognition from the Smithsonian National Museum and was inducted in 2012 to his hometown's Music Hall of Fame. "Chuck's love affair with music has been characterized by his boundless energy, unabashed enthusiasm, and pure joy that radiated from the stage," his family said in a statement shared with The Times on Thursday. Mangione's loved ones also highlighted the musician's devotion to the New York Yankees and requested privacy. Get notified when the biggest stories in Hollywood, culture and entertainment go live. King Charles Caught Reacting to Heckler Asking "Why Does Your Family Cost Us Half a Billion Pounds?"

The royal family don't officially take questions from the public, but that doesn't mean people don't ask. And things can get awkward fast. Cut to: King Charles' recent "walkabout" in Newmarket, where a person in the crowd straight-up asked him "Why does your family cost us half a billion pounds a year, Charles?" Charles' response? To muse "Ah, yes," and keep walking. Cannot like, I've watched this video five times. Watch as King Charles is confronted by members of the public while at an event in Newmarket over the cost of the royal family on UK taxpayers 👇pic.twitter.com/7pVibUT276 — The National (@ScotNational)July 22, 2025 Anyway, the person in the crowd kept going when Charles walked away, shouting out "Why do you only pay your gardeners minimum wage?" This is a reference to a new bombshell report about what's really going on at Charles' beloved garden in Highgrove, and apparently the situation is...not great. According toThe Sunday Times, Charles frequently sends "demanding" notes to staff in "thick red ink," which are "strikingly specific and emotional." He also reportedly said "don't put that man in front of me again" when a gardener didn't enough enough about a specific flower. Meanwhile, an external investigation recommended "mental health support and counseling" for employees, as well as better pay. Oh, and on top of all that, an anonymous worker toldThe Timesthey're treated like "dirt" and that "There was anger boiling at the surface … very impatient, no politeness at all. It was like, you should be thankful that we've given you a job, and you work for the King, the highest person in the country." The 2025 MLB Trade Deadline is one week from today (July 31). Where does each team stand? Below, Yahoo Sports' Jake Mintzputs all 30 clubs into tiersbased on their outlook. Teams with legitimate World Series aspirations, who, like all of us, could use a little bit of extra support. 9 teams:Cubs (60-42), Astros (60-42), Blue Jays (60-42), Dodgers (60-43), Mets (59-44), Phillies (58-44), Yankees (56-46), Padres (55-47), Mariners (54-48) Outstanding ballclubs with strong farm systems that should be all-in, but given their transactional track records and organizational DNA, it's unlikely that the chips go flying into the pot. 2 teams:Brewers (61-41), Tigers (60-43) Clubs likely to either sit on their hands or participate in a little buy/sell dribble-drabble. They're too good to full sell but not good enough to full buy, so they'll do neither or both. 5 teams:Giants (54-49), Rangers (53-50), Rays (53-50), Reds (53-50), Angels (49-53) Given the roller coaster that has been their season thus far, the Red Sox exist in their own tier. What the hottest baseball soap opera of 2025 will do at the deadline is anyone's guess. 1 team:Red Sox (55-49) Clubs that, if they decide to pull the plug, have enviable assets to sell. Jimmy Haslam, owner of the Browns — huge SEC, Tennessee booster, leans heavily on the Manning family. Very close to the Manning family. Arch Manning is part of the Manning family. Nick Saban is incredibly close not only to Jimmy Haslam, but to the Manning family as well. And so Saban, if he could land, I'm told, a top quarterback — like Harbaugh going to the Chargers for [Justin] Herbert — he would take a phone call from the NFL. And there are two teams guaranteed to be awful this year in the NFL: Cleveland and the Saints. Nick Saban has coached in Cleveland with the Browns … and he coached at LSU. The Mannings are royalty in New Orleans … and the Mannings are royalty to Jimmy Haslam. Haslam's circle of trust, according to an article in The Athletic last year, is the Manning family and Jimmy Sexton. Sexton is Nick Saban's agent. … This story is a poorly kept secret. The Mannings. Haslam. Jimmy Sexton. Nick Saban. … Saban's not going to college. He would take a call in the NFL. … This is not a conspiracy theory. To recap:Arch Manning could be a top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and the Browns and Saints could be candidates to select him. The Mannings have connections to both franchises, as does Nick Saban, who is close to the Mannings. Could that result in Saban returning to the sidelines next season with Arch as his signal-caller? Let the speculation begin. Golf's major season is over, and while therace for the FedEx Cup playoffscontinues today at the 3M Open in Minnesota, the more intriguing race is for the 24 coveted spotsat the Ryder Cup in September. The final six players on each side will then be chosen by the captains. Below, the current top 12 for each team… 🇺🇸USA Just two players have guaranteed their spots so far: Scottie Scheffler, whose lead is insurmountable, and Bryson DeChambeau, who has been guaranteed a spotby captain Keegan Bradley. Spaun (12,479) Russell Henley (11,624) DeChambeau (10,775) Harris English (10,386) 7-12:Justin Thomas (10,208); Collin Morikawa (9,744); Ben Griffin (8,605); Bradley (8,039); Maverick McNealy (7,414); Brian Harman (7,008) What to watch:Bradley is playing some of the best golf of his life and must decide whether he wants to make himself the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. 🇪🇺 Europe Rory McIlroy has already made the team. The other 11 spots are still up for grabs, but some believe captain Luke Donaldwill pick almost exactly the same rosterthat dominated the Americans two years ago in Rome. Top 6: McIlroy (3,441) Robert MacIntyre (1,345) Tommy Fleetwood (1,315) Tyrrell Hatton (1,279) Shane Lowry (1,234) Sepp Straka (1,227) 7-12:Rasmus Højgaard (1,135); Justin Rose (1,020); Ludvig Åberg (1,007); Viktor Hovland (930); Thomas Detry (780); Matt Wallace (753) The Rockies beat the Cardinals, 6-0, on Wednesday for theirfirst shutout in 220 games, snapping the longest streak without one in MLB's modern era (since 1900). Their last shutout was an 8-0 victory over the Padres on May 15, 2024. Signs of improvement: The Rockies have gone from historically atrocious (9-50 start to the season) to regular bad (17-26 since), and currently sit at 26-76. They'll need to win at least 15 of their remaining 60 games to avoid breaking the modern MLB record for losses in a season (121). MLS commissioner Don Garber revealed that Apple TV+'s MLS Season Pass isaveraging 120,000 unique viewers per match. The good news: That's a 50% increase over last year, per Garber. The bad news: That's not a very big number. ESPN reportedly averaged 343,000 viewers for MLS matches during the 2022 season, the last in which the league aired games outside of Apple. The NFL's 32 franchises each reportedlyreceived a record $432.6 millionin revenue sharing payouts over the last fiscal year. Dolphins' Matos in stable condition, remains in hospital for observation after training camp injuryNew Foto - Dolphins' Matos in stable condition, remains in hospital for observation after training camp injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos remained under observation at the Ryder Trauma Care Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Thursday, one day after he was transported there by helicopter from training camp with an undisclosed injury. The Dolphins said in a statement that Matos "has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition," but they did not provide any other details of his injury. The team also did not say how long Matos would be under the care of doctors. "It's a really heartbreaking part of the game," fellow Dolphins offensive lineman Austin Jackson said of the injury, which occurred in the final minutes of Day 1 of training camp. "Very tough." The 24-year-old Matos was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and played his college football at New Mexico and South Florida. He was undrafted in 2024 and signed with the Dolphins as a free agent through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, an initiative that gives athletes from countries outside the U.S. a chance to play in the league. Matos, who signed a reserve/future contract in January, had spent time with Miami's practice squad over the past year. Matos only started playing football a few years ago. He grew up playing baseball and basketball, and after moving to Tennessee for high school, popped up on the radar of hoops coaches. Matos wound up redshirting and playing one season for New Mexico before transferring to South Florida, where he continued playing basketball and walked onto the football team. The 6-foot-7, 334-pound Matos started off as a defensive lineman and special teams player before switching to offensive line. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

"We had a complex relationship, and I remember the last conversation we had before our paths drifted was a pretty feisty debate about the merits of catfish," he recalled. "I believe the words 'trash fish,' 'tastes like mud,' and 'cake boy' were used." "Anne and I always had a spirited and somewhat acerbic back and forth," Goldman continued. "Life is tough, and we have to be tough to get through it." "Anne was as tough as they come," he added, "but when you got past the armor there was a depth of compassion and kindness that was absolutely beautiful. Jenna & Friends Jenna Bush Hageris still cringing after an on-air accident on the Thursday, July 24, episode of her showToday with Jenna & Friends. The moment came while the 43-year-old was co-hosting with palWillie Geist. TheTodayshow staples were discussing their extensive history together when things went off the rails. Bush Hager recalled the first time she met Geist's wife, Christina, whom she calls "Tini," in 2012 when their sonGeorgewas just 3 years old. "Christina goes — I don't know if you can say this — but he was like, 'God, George is acting like an a------,'" Bush Hager recalled as Geist and seemingly the rest of the crew shared shocked expressions. "You can't say that. You can't say it." Jenna & Friends While Bush Hager attempted to continue with her story, the show's producers informed her that she couldn't say the expletive on NBC. "Can you say it one time?" she asked. "No," Geist, who hostsSunday Today, informed her. "You can say it zero times." "Oh, sorry, sorry, everybody's looking at me like 'why did you say that?'" Bush Hager said, covering her face with her hands. "I'mlooking at you like 'why did you say that?'" Geist teased his longtime pal. "I'd like to go on the record that my wife never said such a thing about my precious 3-year-old son." "She did!" Bush Hager insisted. "Now I'm blushing and I never blush. Was it the tequila? I thought you were allowed to say it one time." Jenna & Friends Despite producers being audibly heard telling Bush Hager that "no" she could not, in fact, curse one time, she then asked, "That's justSchitt's Creek?" referencing the hit comedy with the tongue and cheek title. "That's just the title of the show spelled differently. Don't keep going down the line of expletives," Geist told her. "This stops here. And we are live on NBC this morning!" As the show went on, Bush Hager became more and more flustered, saying, "I feel worried like I'm going to get a call from the boss or something," while Geist reassured her, "No, you're fine. You're good." James Devaney/GC And while they attempted to continue the morning show talk, the subject kept returning. NBC correspondent Peter Alexander, who had filled in forCraig Melvinon the first two hours of theTodayshow, was seen coming onto the studio set, giving Bush Hager a hard time. "I'm still stuck in a moment and I'm trying to get out of it," Bush Hager admitted. "I'm still stuck in a moment, and here's Peter Alexander from the White House coming over to shame me. I was told you could say it one time!" Geist shut down the notion, saying, "You were not told! No, you were not told. Peter, you're making it worse, just…" "I feel bad! Peter, please go," Bush Hager said. "The shame is all-encompassing. I'm sorry. I apologize to everybody. I apologize." Later in the show, Bush Hager referenced "ruining my job, ruining my career," before admitting to Geist, "I want to be in a shame ball and go eat some Smashburger tacos ... why did I do it? Why did I do it? Where did it come from?" https://people-app.onelink.me/HNIa/kz7l4cuf Bush Hager isn't alone in accidentally breaking FCC broadcast rules on Today. In 2018,Savannah Guthrie was caughtsaying, "Oh s---," on camera, later apologizing for the snafu. And in April, Bush Hager's guest co-hostTyra Banks said "bitch" on air, immediately realizing that she was not allowed to use the expletive. "I don't think you can say that. But I love you so much," Bush Hager told Banks at the time, laughing before Banks asked, "Did you guys do the beep? Beep me!" Read the original article onPeople

Travis Hunter will 'flip-flop' between offense and defense during Jaguars training campNew Foto - Travis Hunter will 'flip-flop' between offense and defense during Jaguars training camp

The Jacksonville Jaguars madea bold movein the2025 NFL Draft, trading up to select two-way prospect Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall selection. In order to maximize Hunter's skill set, the team will allow the rookie to "flip-flop" between offense and defense during training camp. Jaguars head coach Liam Cohen said Wednesday the team has mapped out Hunter's schedule for training camp, which includes some days where he will play bothwide receiver and cornerbackin a single practice, per ESPN. "You want to give him a couple days offense, a couple days defense, and then give him an opportunity to go flip-flop within the same practice and then that will kind of become the norm," Coen said after the Jaguars finished their first workout at the Miller Electric Center adjacent to EverBank Stadium. "... Every moment, every minute that he is in the building, it is accounted for and trying to make sure that we maximize his time, our time so that we can ultimately get the best outcome." That's a change from how the team approached Hunter's workload during offseason workouts. Hunter primarily appeared on offense during team activities in the offseason, though that was a calculated decision. The Jaguars wanted Hunter to get more familiar with the complexities of the team's offense — including its audibles and line checks — which led to the rookie getting more time at wide receiver initially. But the team wants to keep Hunter fresh on both sides of the ball moving forward, which is why he will spend time in both roles — sometimes in the same practice — during training camp. Cohen said the team learned during the offseason that allowing Hunter to focus on one role could take away from his ability to stay fresh at the other, which also played into the decision to move Hunter around during camp. Hunter's deployment as a rookie will be fascinating. While some NFL players have played both ways — see Hunter's college coach Deion Sanders — few have entered the NFL intent on playing both offense and defense. And while Sanders was able to do it during his career, he really only had one season in which he played major roles at cornerback and wide receiver. Hunter will be looking to play two positions immediately. He excelled in that role at Colorado, hauling in 15 touchdowns as a receiver and winning the Chuck Bednarik award for his prowess as a cornerback. But taking on that workload in the NFL will be a new challenge. The Jaguars knew that would be the case when the team traded up for Hunter. Now, it's up to the franchise to figure out the best way to maximize his potential.

There are 5 first-time NFL head coaches this season and they each face distinct challengesNew Foto - There are 5 first-time NFL head coaches this season and they each face distinct challenges

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Glenn has been mapping out exactly how he wants to lead an NFL team for a few years. Before hewas hired as the New York Jets' head coachin January, Glenn spent four seasons as the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator and was empowered by coach Dan Campbell to make some crucial calls for the team off the field. "He allowed me to actually act in the position of being the head coach," Glenn said. "To be able to do the calendar for the offseason, plan training camp out, be able to make decisions that he was supposed to make. "But he allowed me to make those decisions to get me ready to be in this position." Glenn, a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback during a 15-year playing career, is charged withtrying to turn around the fortunes of a Jets franchisethat has the NFL's longest playoff drought at 14 seasons. He opened training camp this week as one of five first-time head coaches in the league, joining Jacksonville's Liam Coen, Chicago's Ben Johnson, New Orleans' Kellen Moore and Dallas' Brian Schottenheimer. All five are long-time assistants who now each face distinct challenges and must balance the responsibilities of managing an entire roster and staff instead of focusing on one particular side of the football. Aaron Glenn, Jets Age: 53 Background: Jets' first-round pick (No. 12 overall) in 1994 out of Texas A&M. Played eight seasons for New York before three with Houston, two with Dallas and one each with Jacksonville and New Orleans. After retiring from playing, Glenn served as the general manager of the Houston Stallions of the indoor Texas Lone Star Football League in 2012 before being hired as a personnel scout with the Jets later that year. He then had stints as an assistant with Cleveland, New Orleans and Detroit. Task: He and new GM Darren Mougeyfocused on making the Jets' roster younger, parting ways with veterans such as QB Aaron Rodgers, WR Davante Adams, LB C.J. Mosley, K Greg Zuerlein and P Thomas Morstead. Glenn, who considers his former coach Bill Parcells a mentor, spoke often during the offseason about changing the Jets' culture. Ending their long postseason drought will help and there's key foundational talent — WR Garrett Wilson, CB Sauce Gardner, RB Breece Hall, DT Quinnen Williams, edge rusher Jermaine Johnson — but the youth movement could temper some first-year expectations. Liam Coen, Jaguars Age: 39 Background: Played quarterback at UMass. Spent last season as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator before beinghired by Jacksonville in Januaryto replace the fired Doug Pederson. Coen had two stints with the Los Angeles Rams, including serving as Sean McVay's offensive coordinator in 2022. He also had college stops as an assistant at Brown, Rhode Island, UMass, Maine and Kentucky. Task: Hisawkward Jaguars intro — "Duuuval" — went viral, but Coen was hired for his offensive prowess after he helped Baker Mayfield to the best season of his career with the Buccaneers.Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall pick in 2021, has not yet fully lived up to expectations and that will be the focus for Coen, who'll call the plays, and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski. Addingversatile No. 2 pick Travis Hunterto the offense (and defense) should help Lawrence and a franchise that has just one playoff appearance in the past seven seasons. Ben Johnson, Bears Age: 39 Background: A former backup QB at North Carolina, Johnson was Detroit's offensive coordinator the past three years and helped Jared Goff and the Lions lead the league in scoring last season. Johnson's path to the NFL began as an assistant at Boston College before seven seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He joined the Lions in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach and was retained by Campbell when he took over as coach in 2020, serving as the tight ends coach and then passing game coordinator before becoming the OC in 2022. Task: The Bears drafted Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in last year's draft and Chicago is hopingJohnson will be able to develop the quarterbackinto a playmaking star. Williams showed promise while starting all 17 games, throwing for a franchise rookie-record 3,541 yard with 20 touchdown passes and six interceptions, but his 68 sacks led the league. Getting Williams to get rid of the ball faster and improve on his accuracy should help, so should GM Ryan Poles'trade acquisitions of guards Joe ThuneyandJonah Jacksonto bolster the offensive line. Kellen Moore, Saints Age: 37 Background: A former backup quarterback with Detroit and Dallas over six NFL seasons, Moore was long considered a head coaching candidate during his stops as an offensive coordinator with the Cowboys, Chargers and Eagles. In his only season in Philadelphia, heguided a high-scoring offensethat powered the Eagles to the Super Bowl behind quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley. Task: Moore doesn't have the talent-rich roster he had last season. He alsoisn't quite sure who his quarterback will beafterDerek Carr unexpectedly retired in Maywith a shoulder injury. The Saints drafted Tyler Shough in the second round and also have Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener, who each started games last season. The offense has some talent with WR Chris Olave and RB Alvin Kamara, but the defense needs to improve after allowing the second-most yards rushing in the NFL. Brian Schottenheimer, Cowboys Age: 51 Background: The son of the late Marty Schottenheimer was a bit of a surprise pick by Jerry Jones to replace Mike McCarthy as Dallas' coach. Butthe younger Schottenheimer has a lengthy resumein both the pros and at the college level, with stints as an offensive coordinator with the Cowboys, Seahawks, Rams and Jets among them. Task: Schottenheimer will need to build an even better rapport with quarterback Dak Prescott, who played in only eight games last season because of a hamstring injury. The coach also made some headlines during the offseason when he said Prescott is still "in the developmental phase" of his career and the team is tweaking some things with him. With Philadelphia still among the NFL's elite teams and Washington one of the league's most promising squads, Schottenheimer and the Cowboys will have a tough road to make the playoffs out of the NFC East. That'sdespite Jones sayinghe's "excited about our team's ability to compete right now." ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Trey Parker and Matt Stonearen't holding back. The "South Park" creators tore intoPresident Donald Trump− and their bosses atParamount− in the animated show's Season 27 premiere, which referenced everything from the company's controversialsettlement with the presidentto its shock decision tocancel "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."Comedy Central, where "South Park" airs, is owned by Paramount. The episode depicts Trump literally getting into bed with Satan, his lover, using actual photos of the president crudely placed on an animated body. It's the same depiction that Saddam Hussein received in 1999's "South Park" movie, and Satan even comments that Trump and Saddam are "exactly alike." In the episode, Trump is portrayed as a thin-skinned bully who threatens to sue anyone who gets on his bad side. The main plot revolves around the supposed death of "wokeness" and the president pushing Christianity in classrooms by having Jesus physically appear at the boys' school. When the parents of South Park get angry and push back, Trump decides to sue the town. The episode goes on to take aim at Paramount for itscontroversial settlement with Trumpover a "60 Minutes" interview withKamala Harris, which he alleged was deceptively edited. A pair of "60 Minutes" anchors are shown covering the protests in South Park, but they nervously praise Trump and insist they don't agree with the protesters, as if they are worried he will sue again. All seasons of 'South Park'have a new streaming home. Where can you watch? Eventually, Jesus arrives at the South Park protest and, speaking nervously with clenched teeth, reveals he came to the kids' school "because it was part of a lawsuit and the agreement with Paramount." "(Trump) can do whatever he wants now that someone backed down," Jesus continues, adding, "You guys saw what happened to CBS? Well, guess who owns CBS? Paramount! You really want to end up like Colbert? ... Just shut up, or we're going to get canceled, you idiots!" The episode aired less than a week after thecancellation of Colbert's "Late Show,"which CBS said was for financial reasons. But critics accused the network, which Paramount owns, ofcanceling the show to appease Trumpamid a proposed merger with Skydance that requires Trump administration approval. Colbert is a vocal Trump critic and mocks him on almost every episode of "The Late Show." Colbert's cancellation:A ratings crisis or a political bribe? We investigate The season premiere ends with the people of South Park settling with Trump and agreeing to do pro-Trump messaging as part of their agreement. So the show cuts to a supposed pro-Trump public service announcement, in which Trump, in live-action, is shown crawling through a desert completely nude. With its surprisingly pointed critique of Paramount, the episode also aired on the same day that Paramount announced afive-year agreementwith Parker and Stone for 50 new episodes of "South Park." White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers slammed "South Park" in a statement provided to USA TODAY in response to the season premiere's Trump parody. "The Left's hypocrisy truly has no end — for years they have come after 'South Park' for what they labeled as 'offense' content, but suddenly they are praising the show," Rogers said. "Just like the creators of 'South Park,' the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows." The White House's statement continued, "This show hasn't been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.President Trumphas delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country's history — and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump's hot streak." Tanya Simon to Lead CBS News' '60 Minutes' as Executive ProducerNew Foto - Tanya Simon to Lead CBS News' '60 Minutes' as Executive Producer

CBS News named Tanya Simon the new executive producer of "60 Minutes," making her just the fourth executive to lead the program in its nearly 60 years on air and the first woman to do so. She takes the reins of the show at a tumultuous time, when the venerable newsmagazine has been put in the crosshairs of the Trump administration and the fortunes of corporate parent Paramount Global. Simon has been overseeing the program since its previous EP,Bill Owens, stepped down in April, citing interference in the show's editorial processes by Paramount. Wendy McMahon, the CBS executive who ran CBS News and its local stations, left a few weeks afterward, noting that she and the company had different views of how to run operations. "'60' is in a class of its own, upholding a legacy of extraordinary and thought-provoking journalism for more than half a century. I'm deeply committed to this level of excellence and I look forward to delivering an exciting season of signature '60' stories that cover a wide range of subjects for a broad audience and engage viewers with their world." She has been with CBS News since 1996, joining the news division as a researcher for "48 Hours." Her father, Bob Simon, was a "60 Minutes" correspondent who was respected for his knowledge of foreign affairs. The newsmagazine has been generating headlines of its own in recent months. Paramount earlier this monthagreed to pay $16 million to President Donald Trumpto end what has been viewed in many legal circles as a flimsy lawsuit tied to a pre-Election Day interview between Bill Whitaker, a "60 Minutes" correspondent, and former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. The decision has vexed supporters of the program and of journalism in general, who charge Paramount executives risk tarnishing a media brand that has long sought to hold power to account and to probe events with an independent lens. Paramount is in the midst of trying to push forward on a sale to Skydance Media, and Trump's lawsuit, and a separate probe by the Federal Communications Commission are seen as attempts to block that goal, or to squeeze payments out of the corporation in exchange for a path to the merger. People familiar with CBS News operations believe weeks of leaks about Paramount's legal machinations and of the "60 Minutes" staff's aversion to any kind of settlementhave served to undermine the show. "60 Minutes" continues to generate some of TV's highest ratings. Simon, before taking on an interim executive producer role in April following Owens' exit, was the show's executive editor for six seasons. Prior to that, she was a senior producer whose responsibilities included overseeing digital content and supervising production of "60 Minutes Sports," a monthly sports-focused edition of the program that ran on Showtime. She joined the staff in 2000, working with correspondent Ed Bradley on a variety of reports including the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Duke University lacrosse rape case and a rare interview with Bob Dylan. Simon went on to produce for nearly all the "60 Minutes" correspondents over the next decade, including Steve Kroft, Lesley Stahl, Scott Pelley, Anderson Cooper, and her father. "Tanya Simon understands what makes '60 Minutes' tick. She is an innovative leader, an exceptional producer and someone who knows how to inspire people," saidTom Cibrowski, recently named president and executive editor of CBS News, in a statement. "Tanya knows that the success of today's '60 Minutes' depends on delivering a weekly mix of the most informative, impactful and entertaining stories and investigative journalism from around the world. This is the true essence and foundation of '60 Minutes.'" Best of Variety New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week 'Harry Potter' TV Show Cast Guide: Who's Who in Hogwarts?
