Kristin Davis Recalls Sarah Jessica Parker Telling Her 'You Have Body Dysmorphia' amid Struggle with Eating Disorder

On the August 11 episode of herAre You a Charlotte?podcast, the 60-year-old actress discussed getting a lot of negative comments throughout her career and how that affected her mental health. She admitted to having a "thinness issue" while starring as Charlotte York in the HBO series, one that even friend and costarSarah Jessica Parkernoticed. "There were times when Sarah Jessica would be like, 'You have body dysmorphia.' And I'd be like, I don't think I do because the world is literally telling me daily that I am pear shaped," she recalled. "Like so much to the point where, like, you can't think straight." "But then you also have disordered eating. You're starving yourself," she continued. "I remember fainting in a parking lot one time because I was on some crazy diet…all the craziness." "There was a good number of years when… people would see me on the street and they would say, 'Oh, but you're not fat.' And I know they didn't mean anything bad. They mean it as a compliment, right? But it's because I'm standing next to Sarah Jessica. Or, 'You're prettier in person.' And I'm just like, well, okay." "There's like a weird cynicism about our industry and about us that then permeates the thinking," she added. Davis is often candid about the impact body shaming in Hollywood has had on her over the years. In February 2025, in her PEOPLE cover story, the actress spoke about the entertainment industry's unrealistic beauty standards. She detailed the unhealthy diets she did early in her career to try and be "thin." "Every single person was gorgeous and super skinny," she said. "So I was like, 'This is what I have to do.'" Davis hired a running coach and would do back-to-back 90-minute spin classes. "I was frustrated. I was trying to do the thing," she said. "Of course, I'm sure I wasn't eating, I have no idea. I don't remember the eating part." The actress recalled being on the set of 90s hitMelrose Place, which she joined in 1995, and being approached by her costarThomas Calabroin her makeup trailer. That's when she learned the producers had a problem with her weight. "He's like, 'Kristin, I'm so happy to see you here,'" she said of Calabro. "'I just wanna tell you, you know, I think you look great,' and I'm like, 'Oh, thank you. What are you talking about? What do you mean?' He said, 'Oh, I know that the producers are really stressed, you know, but I just think it's amazing that we have a woman who has curves.'" When Davis expressed her confusion, Calabro reportedly said, "'I just think they shouldn't, you know, put too much pressure on you.' And I'm like, 'What?'" She continued, "I go to the line producer and I'm like, 'Thomas Calabro just told me that you guys are stressing about my weight. Did someone say something? Did Mr.[Aaron] Spellingsay something?' And he was like, 'We think you look beautiful,' and I was like, 'Yeah, and?' He goes, 'Just don't gain any weight.'" Davis acknowledged that this type of behavior on set was "just normal then." "It was normal for a long time. You could look at it either way," she told PEOPLE. "But I mean, there was a lot of stress. If you had hips, it was a situation."
