Little League World Series scores: Results, schedule as first day of tournament gets underwayNew Foto - Little League World Series scores: Results, schedule as first day of tournament gets underway

The wait is finally over. The2025 Little League World Serieskicks off on Wednesday, with eight teams beginning their quest to win it all. The action starts at 1 p.m. ET, when Puerto Rico takes on Latin America to start the tournament. Mountain vs. Great Lakes, Panama vs. Australia and Metro vs. Southwest will also square off on the event's first day. A new winner will be crowned in 2025 after last year's champion, Lake Mary, was eliminated ahead of this year's tournament. Which teams will prevail and remain in the winner's bracket? Tune in Wednesday for the start of all the action. •Venezuela 5, Puerto Rico 0 • Mountain vs. Great Lakes at 3 p.m. ET (Result: TBD) • Panama vs. Australia at 5 p.m. ET (Result: TBD) • Metro vs. Southwest at 7 p.m. ET (Result: TBD) In case you needed a refresher, the 2025 Little League World Series will feature a total of 20 teams — 10 from the United States and 10 International clubs. Those teams will compete in a modified double-elimination tournament. Play begins Aug. 13, with the winners advancing and remaining in the winners portion of the bracket. Starting Aug. 16, the teams that lost their first games will face off to determine which teams remain in the event. Once a team loses twice, it is eliminated. But that changes once the championships begin. The U.S. championship game and international championship game will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, and will both be single-elimination games. That creates a scenario where a team could be eliminated from the event with just one loss. The same thing will hold true for the LLBWS championship game. It's a single-elimination contest. Games will last six innings. If a game is tied after six innings, both teams will play the seventh inning as normal, with no runners on base. But if the game extends past the seventh inning, a runner will open each inning on second base. Here's how the action shapes up for Thursday. • Europe-Africa vs. Japan at 1 p.m. ET • New England vs. Southwest at 3 p.m. ET • Asia-Pacific vs. Mexico at 5 p.m. ET • Midwest vs. Mid Atlantic at 7 p.m. ET

Scottie Scheffler to use a different caddie at BMW Championship as regular deals with family matterNew Foto - Scottie Scheffler to use a different caddie at BMW Championship as regular deals with family matter

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler is going with a PGA Tour caddie for the BMW Championship as his regular looper, Ted Scott, deals with a family emergency at home in Louisiana. Scott had to leave immediately after the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and Scheffler used longtime friend Brad Payne from the College Golf Fellowship. This week he has turned to Michael Cromie. He usually works for Chris Kirk, who missed qualifying for theBMW Championshipby one shot. "He works really hard and does a good job. We're both learning a new golf course this week, so it's been fun," Scheffler said. The family matter involving Scott was kept private, though Scheffler said he has spoken to him a couple of times and the family was in good spirits. "I think Ted's where he needs to be right now, and I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be," Scheffler said. Scheffler finished one shot out of a playoff last week at theTPC Southwind. He remains the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup at the BMW Championship and already is assured of a $5 million bonus for staying at the top going into the FedEx Cup finale next week at East Lake. Scheffler said Cromie was learning a lot of the minutiae that often goes unnoticed by spectators, such as when he likes to snack and how often to drink, and how he likes to get the yardage and other conditions communicated to him. There's also the matter of getting yardages from tee-to-green. "Brad did a great job stepping in, but Brad is a friend, he's not a professional caddie," Scheffler said. "I think when you have a professional on the bag, it's a bit different. It's not that I don't trust Brad to do the numbers. It was just something that I think both of us probably thought it was a good idea to be double-checking each other. "Going into this week, it will be kind of more of a normal routine for me in terms of preparation over the shot and stuff like that," he said. "It's nice for me to be able to walk up to the ball, see the shot that I can imagine hitting, and then when the numbers come, we start trying to really dial it in." ___ AP golf:https://apnews.com/hub/golf

Chuck Girard, Christian Rock Pioneer Who Fronted Love Song in 1970s After Hitting Top 10 With the Hondells, Dies at 81New Foto - Chuck Girard, Christian Rock Pioneer Who Fronted Love Song in 1970s After Hitting Top 10 With the Hondells, Dies at 81

Chuck Girard, who became one of the pioneers of Christian rock as Love Song's lead singer in the 1970s after having hits as a member of the Hondells in the '60s, died Monday at age 81. Girard had announced on social media earlier that he was battling stage 4 cancer. "It is with great sorrow, yet also great joy, to let you know that Chuck has moved to Heaven and will be eternally with Jesus," his wife, Karen, announced on social media. "He left this earth at rest and in total peace, surrounded by family. We praise the Lord for His great mercy and for His gift of Chuck's music, message, and heart." Love Song was short-lived, releasing a self-titled debut album in 1972 and then breaking up before a second LP, "Final Touch," hit stores two years later. (A reunion tour generated a live double-album, "Feel the Love," in 1977.) Yet their impact was widely felt in evangelical circles and beyond, as the Girard-fronted group became the first Christian rock band to receive national notoriety, at the same time as solo artists like Larry Norman were coming to greater attention as what was then called "Jesus music" emerged. That impact eclipsed the more chart-worthy success he had had a decade earlier, when he was a member of such groups as the Hondells and the Castells. The latter group cracked the top 20 with "Sacred" in 1961, and then the Hondells reached No. 9 with a Gary Usher-produced cover of the Beach Boys' "Little Honda" in 1964. The 1972 "Love Song" album was named by CCM Magazine as one of the 25 greatest Christian contemporary music albums of all time. A three-part documentary about the group, "A Band Called Love Song: The Music & Movement of the Jesus Revolution," is set to come out on Prime Video on Sept. 19. Following Love Song's initial breakup in the early 1970s, Girard embarked on a solo career, starting with a self-titled album in 1974 on which he was backed by members of Ambrosia. That solo debut included his most popular song, "Sometimes Alleluia," which became a staple of nondenominational church services that were seeking out fresher songs for worship in place of hymns. Although his profile was lower as succeeding generations of artists came along in what came to be known as CCM, Girard continued to enjoy respect as one of the pioneers of the genre, and — with several long pauses in his recording career — continued releasing albums up through 2024's "Moonrise Serenade." Christian music stars of the past and present reacted to Girard's death with expressions of sorrow and gratitude. "I am so grateful for the life Chuck lived and for the way he ran with endurance the race set before him," said Amy Grant, in a statement to CCM Magazine. "The hope-filled music he poured into the world, using his God-given gifts, has touched countless lives. I remember listening to 'Slow Down' as a young teenager and how that song helped direct the course of my life. Now he is seeing what we have yet to see and hearing what we have only dreamed about, joining that great cloud of witnesses. We will all be there in a blink of an eye." "There's no doubt that Chuck was not only a pioneer, he was a pastor," said John J. Thompson, founder of True Tunes and longtime CCM chronicler. "Love Song may not have been the first Jesus Music band, but they certainly took the genre to a whole new level of professionalism without losing an ounce of passion or heart. Most people think of him and his legacy through the lens of Love Song, but his solo work was so seminal too. 'Rock and Roll Preacher' and 'Slow Down' were equally influential — and critical— for completely different reasons." Girard released a memoir, "Rock and Roll Preacher," in 2020, named for a song on his first solo album. Initially raised in the Los Angeles area, Girard's family had moved to Santa Rosa when he began forming bands with fellow students in the area. He was still a senior in high school when the Castells' "Sacred" hit the top 20 in 1961. It was then that he met Gary Usher, the co-writer of Beach Boys songs like "In My Room," who invited Girard to become a part of his studio inner circle, recording with bands with ever-shifting monikers and lineups. "So I did that for about four years," Girard said. "I made records under all kinds of different names. We made hot rod albums, surf albums, monster albums." Nick Venel, an exec who had worked with the Beach Boys, asked Usher to come up with an album that would come out under the name of the Hondells. Usher was said to have handed Girard a copy of the brand new Beach Boys album "All Summer Long" and asked him to quickly learn the Brian Wilson/Mike Love-penned track "Little Honda," the Hondells' cover of which just as quickly took off. In the early '70s Girard was playing gigs in clubs with Tommy Coomes, Jay Truax and Fred Field. After experimentations with LSD and at least one drug bust in Las Vegas, the musicians were reading different spiritual texts when they were invited to what Girard called a Christian commune in Laguna Beach. An invitation to Calvary Chapel, before it became a megachurch, led to all four musicians becoming Christian coverts. Love Song became a house band of sorts at the Chuck Smith-led, counterculture-friendly church. Girard produced the first of a long series of compilation albums on Calvary Church's Maranatha label, "The Everlastin' Living Jesus Music Concert," although he said he was not credited as such on the album, "because I was told that would be giving the glory to man, not God," he said. (Producer credits were added on subsequent Maranatha releases.) There was little that counted as a Christian music industry in Love Song's day, with Word Records, which released Love Song's albums with the Good News imprint, being the only major label in the genre for a few years to come. "The things that are concerns today weren't even on our minds, he said in an interview. "Like nowadays everybody's looking at demographics and who your core audience is and radio-friendly records and all that. Our music was just music that came from our heart, our experiences with the Lord. We had some industry input. When we finally did get signed to a label and records started to come out there was input. But we really were blessed to be able to make the records that we wanted to without any considerations for industry kind of things." Love Song was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame at a 2012 ceremony, which included the later-joining members Bob Wall and Phil Keaggy (who toured with but did not record with the group). "I would like to thank the GMHOF sincerely for the honor; it is truly validating and appreciated," he wrote in a blog post at the time. But "what really matters is the heavenly Hall of Fame," he continued. "Whether or not such a thing would actually be a way that God would honor the greatest of His servants, if it did exist, we would probably be very surprised to see who might be on it and how they would be ranked. "#25, Billy Graham, #15, the apostle Paul, #3 Mildred Jones" Wait a minute, Mildred Jones? Who is she? God might say, 'Mildred, because you prayed without ceasing, fasted once a month, and continued to lift up Billy Graham in intercession, you are #3.' Silly? Probably. But you get my point. The real treasure is in Heaven. The real rewards will not be determined by outward achievement alone but by inner qualities, integrity, truthfulness, obedience. At the end of the day, what do we have that God did not give us?" He continued, "I pray that we will all be in Heaven's Hall of Fame someday and hear the most amazing words we will probably ever hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your lord." In June, Girard relayed to his followers that his cancer had metastasized to his lungs about a year ago, and that he had stopped chemo treatments. "Ultimately, it is in the hands of God," he said. "Karen and I, and the whole family, are walking in total peace with the comfort of the Holy Spirit, knowing that our lives are in His hands… I am deeply grateful for all of you. It's been an honor to share my music and ministry with you for the past 50 years. Your kind messages and support over the years have been a tremendous encouragement and inspiration." Girard is survived by his wife, Karen, four daughters, four granddaughters and two grandsons. Two of his daughters, Alisa Girard-Childers (formerly of the group ZOEgirl) and Kristin Girard-Thurston, formed the group Girard Girls in the late 2000s with two of his granddaughters, Lauren and Kailyn Thurston. Twins owners decide to keep team after exploring sale: 'The franchise has become part of our family story'New Foto - Twins owners decide to keep team after exploring sale: 'The franchise has become part of our family story'

The Pohlad family will not sell the Minnesota Twins after entertaining offers for the franchise. The Pohlads put out a statement Wednesday, confirming they will keep the club, which has "become part of our family story." In the statement, the Pohlads said theyexplored a number of sale optionsover the past several months. Ultimately, the family opted to add "two significant limited partnership groups" to the equation. The Pohlad family will remain the "principal owner" of the club despite those additions. The statement ends: "We see and hear the passion from our partners, the community and Twins fans. That passion inspires us. This ownership group is committed to building a winning team and culture for this region, one that Twins fans are proud to cheer for." The news comes just weeks after the Twins engaged in a fire sale which saw multiple relievers and shortstop Carlos Correa shipped out at the trade deadline. The Correa move, in particular, came off as a salary dump, as the team accepted a weaker return in exchange for the Houston Astros taking on more of Correa's remaining contract. Those moves caused some to wonder whether the Pohlad family was attempting to shed salary to clear future payroll in anticipation of a sale. Wednesday's statement ends any speculation along that line of thinking. The Twins have experienced a fair amount of success since they were purchased by Carl Pohlad for $44 million in 1984. The club won two World Series championships early during Pohlad's ownership and experienced a strong run between 2001 and 2010, in which they finished first or second in the American League Central eight times. Despite making the playoffs six times during that stretch, the team failed to advance past the ALCS. More recently, the Twins made the playoffs four times since 2017, but haven't advanced past the ALDS. Despite the team's success, the Twins have rarely run high payrolls. The last time the team opened a season in thetop-10 in payrolloccurred back in 2011, per Cot's Contracts. Since 2013, the team has never ranked higher than 16th in payroll. That hasn't necessarily been an issue during the regular season, where the Twins have experienced success in a fairly weak AL Central. But come the playoffs, where they often face higher-payroll clubs, the Twins have withered. The team famously broke an18-game playoff losing streakwith a win over the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023. During that stretch, the Twins have gone 0-13 against the New York Yankees in the postseason. While Minnesota managed to end its playoff losing streak against the Blue Jays in 2023, it still lost the series 3-1. It's unclear whether the team's two new partnerships will enable the club to spend more money in the future. Higher payrolls don't always guarantee success in baseball, but the Twins likely would have performed better in recent postseasons had they signed better, more expensive players in free agency. While the Twins have struggled since the start of 2024, those issues haven't affected the team's value. When the Pohlads initially announced theirintention to sell the teamlast October, the Twins were valued atroughly $1.5 billion.

TheMiami Dolphinshave been waiting to get their pass rush to full health for some time. The team received yet another scare on that front on Wednesday. Edge rusher Chop Robinson was carted off with theDetroit Lionswith an undisclosed injury. Robinson said on his Instagram story afterward, "I'm good yall (sic) nothing serious." According tothe Palm Beach Post, which is part of the USA TODAY Network, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and fellow edge rusher Jaelan Phillips attended to Robinson before the cart arrived. Robinson was hurt on a play in which he forced a fumble by Lions running back David Montgomery. Last season saw Bradley Chubb miss the entire campaign due while recovering from a knee injury suffered in December 2023, while Phillips was sidelined after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Week 4. The latter also suffered a torn Achilles in November 2023. Robinson started just one game as a rookie after being selected with the No. 21 overall pick in last year's NFL draft, but he came on strong to close out his debut season. The Penn State product recorded six sacks in the Dolphins' final 10 games and finished fifth in voting for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Chubb, among others, envisioned big things for Year 2. "He's lights-out, man," Chubb said in July, according tothe Post. "His motor, the way he bends the edge, the way he could play the run – I know a lot of people in here say he couldn't play the run, (but he's) nothing short of phenomenal, man, and I'm excited to see him keep growing." Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky had a rap battle. One is claiming victoryNew Foto - Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky had a rap battle. One is claiming victory

NEW YORK (AP) —A$AP Rockyhad no ideaDenzel Washingtonwas going to throw Nas at him. Midway throughSpike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest,"a New York riff on Akira Kurosawa's "High to Low," wealthy music executive David King (Washington) has cornered aspiring rapper Yung Felon (Rocky) after he tried to kidnap King's son. They meet in a music studio. A rap battle ensues. While the scene was scripted, much of what Washington freestyled — mixing in lines from Nas, Tupac, DMX and others — startled his professional rapper co-star. "I'm like: How does this man know who Moneybagg Yo is?" Rocky says, sitting alongside Washington. "And I'm 70," Washington says with a grin. "Highest 2 Lowest," which A24 releases in theaters Friday, two weeks before it lands on Apple TV+, is a heist thriller that hits hardest when Washington and Rocky are going at it. Washington, one of the mightiest of living actors,is, of course, an imposing presence. Even though Rocky might usually have the upper hand in the studio, he's just beginning to prove himself as an actor. "Denzel is such a powerful force. Not a derogatory term, but he's a beast," Lee said. "Rocky is from Harlem, uptown. So I knew that he's not going to punk out. He's going to stand there, feet planted to the ground, as a heavyweight fight, blow to blow to blow. If you got somebody who don't got it, Denzel is going to slaughter them. SLAUGHTER." But in "Highest 2 Lowest," Rocky proves that he can go toe-to-toe with a titan like Washington. In the annals of movie face-offs between the veteran and the up-and-comer, the scene is a riveting showdown. Not that Rocky is claiming victory. "I had to go with the flow with him," Rocky says. "You've got to realize this guy's a pro. He's a wordsmith for real. It's not a joke. So when he went, I caught his drift. But I lost a rap battle to this man. And I'm a professional f------ rapper." With that Washington roars and slams the table. "But I'm using other people's material," he adds. "And I've been practicing." "It doesn't matter," replies Rocky. "I lost, man. It's unfortunate that that's my profession in real life." Washington's rapping skills But as he showed in a recent interview, Washington's envy for his co-star's day job is more than for show. Washington's hip-hop affection runs deep. Asked how he approached the big scene with Rocky, Washington takes out his phone and begins playing Nas' "N.Y. State of Mind" and raps along: "I keep some E&J, sittin' bent up in the stairway." "All right, would you ever in a million years expect the Denzel Washington to be able to recite classic quotes and lines from hip-hop?" exclaims Rocky. But Washington was just getting started. He grandly spat a verse of DMX ("Lucky that you breathing, but you dead from the waist down"), a few bars of Outkast ("Yes, we done come along way like them slim-ass cigarettes") and cackled joyfully at a line from Samara Cyn and Smino's "Brand New Teeth": "Spent my rent money on these brand-new teeth." "For me on the outside looking in, it was like this guy was Method acting," Rocky says. "He was just being himself. He should have been a rapper." Washington shakes his head. "No, I play one on TV." Yet Washington has as much facility with Wizkid as he doesShakespeareorAugust Wilson. Pushed to explain his mentality going into the scene, Washington still demurs. "I can't, man. I don't have one," he says. "I just flow. I can't tell you what I'm going to do, because I don't know. I never know how it's going to go. I don't plan. But I have been practicing for a long time, and nobody knew! I never had the platform." 'I'm still on top' In "Highest 2 Lowest," Lee — in his fifth film with Washington — surveys a changing entertainment industry. Washington's once supreme music executive is losing his grip on what sells — and what sells matters less than how many followers someone has. The movie weaves in some of Lee's other obsessions — the New York Yankees; New York, itself — but it casts the moral questions of Kurosawa's classic against a media landscape where authenticity can be hard to find. Asked if he identified with his character's quandary, Washington pauses to consider the question. "If I had an ego, I'd say no, because I'm still on top," says Washington. "And I'm getting better." Rocky, though, sees some of himself in Yung Felon. It's a moniker Rocky, himself, suggested replace the scripted name, MC Microphone Checka. Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, shot "Highest 2 Lowest" in the run-up to hisrecent trial over a 2021 incidentin which Rocky was accused of firing a gun at Terell Ephron, a former friend and collaborator known as A$AP Relli. Rocky was found not guilty in February on two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The verdict gave Rocky a new lease on life just as his film career might be taking off. He also co-stars in the upcoming"If I Had Legs I'd Kick You,"a hit at Sundance. Meanwhile, he's preparing his long-awaited fourth album, "Don't Be Dumb." Who are 'the new rappers'? For Rocky, the music industry backdrop of "Highest 2 Lowest" rings true. Music sales, he notes, are way down.Artificial intelligence is taking over. "They've got to figure out how to regulate it," Rocky says. "People in music are already doing it. Not to put nobody on the spot, there are people with No. 1 records and it's not even them. It's not even their voice on the track." "This is a smart kid here," says Washington. But Washington is resistant. "People trying to sound like me don't sound like me, to me," he says, doubtingArtificial intelligence's potential. He peppers Rocky with questions. Rocky, 36, already sounds like an old-timer. "The kids, they don't want to be rappers anymore," Rocky says. "They don't want to be ballers. They want to be streamers. It's basically another word for 'YouTuber.' They all want to be YouTubers, I promise you." Washington: "How will they make money doing that?" Rocky: "They make all the money now." Washington: "From what? What do they do? Without the talent, without the thing to go see…" Rocky: "What's the substance? That's what I'm saying is the big question. The performers are obsolete. Nobody's watching. Nobody cares. They'd rather watch an 18-year-old with millions of viewers open up a bag of chips and tell you how good it is. These guys are the new rappers." But for now, at least in "Highest 2 Lowest," Rocky and Washington are still the performers. They're the rappers, even the two-time Oscar winner. Rocky, who grew up watching Washington in "Malcolm X," can hardly believe it. "He gives you that confidence he walks around with," Rocky says. "A lot of times, people tell me that I embody this self-confidence — I see it all in him. Just him embracing me, them embracing me, it was so chill. I waited my whole life for this." "Me too!" bellows Washington, with a laugh. "And that's the truth! I've been a closet rapper for 40 years. Finally I get the chance."

The opportunity to see the best 12U baseball teams from around the world compete for a championship presents baseball in its truest form. The children provide an appreciation for the sport that can sometimes be lost in professional settings. Every moment is exciting. Every hit is enormous. Every run is exhilarating. Every strikeout is monumental. That emotion has captivated audiences for decades, making big moments all the more compelling. Whether it is a walk-off home run, a huge defensive play, or a group of kids achieving their ultimate goal, the Little League World Series has created some incredible moments over the years. Here are our picks for the five most iconic moments in LLWS history. 2025 Little League World Series bracket:Schedule for every game at Williamsport The highest possible OPS a player can have is 5.000. That mark would mean that a player hit a home run every single time they came up to the plate. Such a feat is impossible, right? RIGHT?! Nope. Lloyd McClendon put on a "Legendary" performance at the 1971 Little League World Series, going 5-for-5 with, you guessed it, five home runs. His team would wind up losing in the championship game to Chinese Taipei. How did Taipei do it? Simple. They didn't let McClendon bat. They walked him every time he came to the plate after he hit a home run against them in the first inning. McClendon's team would not score another run for the rest of the game. Mo'ne Davis's legend is well-known. She wasn't the first girl to compete in the Little League World Series, but she was arguably the most dominant, corralling a complete game shutout win during her team's first game of the tournament. To this day, that remains the only time a female player has earned a win on the mound at the Little League World Series, and it was a shutout. Davis did not do as well in her next pitching performance, but her mark on the tournament had already been left. Despite her team failing to reach the U.S. Championship, many fans still know her name and were excited to see herreturn to Williamsport in 2021as an analyst. What's better than leading the LLWS tournament in both home runs and RBIs? How about winning the tournament with a walk-off home run? Lappe did absolutely everything for his California squad during the 2023 tournament, especially in the role of hero. It couldn't have been more dramatic. California was leading Curacao in the championship game, 5-1 after four innings. In the fifth, Curacao hit a grand slam to tie the game. Lo and behold, Lappe led off the sixth inning. Fans leaned forward in their seats. Everyone was dead quiet when the announcer uttered a jinx for the ages, noting that Curacao had not surrendered a home run for the entirety of the Little League World Series. On cue, Lappe sent everyone home with a moonshot to left field. THIS IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF!A walk-off to win the#LLWSChampionship 🙌pic.twitter.com/aVZVvIKIwi — Little League (@LittleLeague)August 27, 2023 The Japan-U.S. rivalry is well-known in Little League Baseball. Since 1998, the U.S. and Japan have combined for more than 20 titles. The rest of the world has just three. In 2007, that rivalry came to a head as Georgia looked for their second consecutive LLWS title, and second consecutive championship game win over Japan. Despite strong pitching performances from both sides, Georgia's Dalton Carriker was able to take an eighth-inning pitch deep to walk off the game and the tournament. Although Burroughs' and his California team's loss in the 1992 championship was eventually flipped on its head once it was known that the team from the Philippines that won had violated age and residency rules, Burroughs returned for the 1993 Little League World Series looking to avenge the defeat. He was on a mission, and no one was going to stop him. Burroughs would go on to throw no-hitters in both his team's pool play opener against Ohio on August 23 and in the U.S. Championship game on August 26. He did not pitch in the LLWS title game, but his team came through nonetheless. Burroughs would go on to play in the majors between 2002 and 2012. This year's tournament begins Wednesday, August 13 and runs until Sunday, August 24. Games can be viewed on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC, or streamed withESPN+. I don't think anyone is sleeping on the Brewers, who lead the majors with a 75-44 record and have won 11 straight after routing the Pirates,14-0, on Tuesday. But it's still worth diving into Milwaukee's magical summer, particularly considering it followed such a lackluster spring. Going streaking:The Brewers have gone a ridiculous 26-4 since July 6, and they're now just thethird team with multiple 11-game win streaksin a season in the last 90 years. But their turnaround from also-ran to juggernaut actually began six weeks earlier. On May 24, after losing for the 10th time in 16 games, the Brewers were a measly 25-28 — the fifth-worst record in the NL and just a half-game ahead of the lowly Nationals. Since then, they've gone 50-16 — a remarkable 123-win pace over nearly half the season. And they've done it with abottom-10 payroll, too. Consider this:Since Milwaukee's surge began in late May, the Cubs have the second-best record in the NL. Yet somehow Chicago has lost14 gamesin the standings to the Brewers since then. A true buzzsaw. How have they done this?Unsurprisingly, Milwaukee has the best ERA in MLB and best OPS in the NL since that late-May turnaround. But whatissurprising is the players that have fueled their run as guys like Jackson Chourio, Rhys Hoskins and Jacob Misiorowski have landed on the IL. Andrew Vaughn, the No. 3 pick in the 2019 draft, was so bad this year that the White Sox of all teams demoted him to Triple-A. But since being traded to Milwaukee he's beenone of the league's best hitters, smacking 8 HR and 32 RBI in 27 games with the Brewers. Isaac Collins is a 28-year-old rookie, which isn't usually a good thing. But the ninth-rounder from 2019 alsoleads all NL rookies in fWAR, was just namedNL player of the weekand is now the betting favorite to win ROY. Quinn Priester pitched to a bloated 6.23 ERA in his first two big league seasons before landing in Milwaukee this spring; now he's 11-2 with a 3.49 ERA. I could go on, but you get the point. To put it another way:They've done this by playing Brewer baseball. They aren't going to out-slug the competition (Christian Yelich, having an above average but unspectacular season, leads the team with 23 HR), but they'll outwork and outhustle anyone. As reigning NL manager of the year Pat Murphyeloquently put it, "We have to do what we have to do to be who we are." Amen. Looking ahead:The last time the Brewers had the best record in baseball this late in the season was 1982, when they reached their first and only World Series. If Milwaukee's magical summer carries over to the fall, you'd be wise not to bet against history repeating itself. Budapest —Mondo Duplantis has done it again. The American-born Swedebroke the pole vault world recordfor the 13th time in his career on Tuesday, clearing 6.29 metersat the Hungarian Grand Prix. Lucrative gig: As a reminder, Mondo earns $100,000 every time he breaks a world record. And to maximize his earnings, he purposely breaks it by only one centimeter at a time. 4D chess. New York —What long seemed inevitable became official on Tuesday when Pete Alonso hit his 253rd career home run to pass Darryl Strawberryfor the most in Mets franchise history. And three innings later, the Polar Bear belted his 254th for good measure. Fireworks outage: The Mets hit so many home runs (six) in their 13-5 win over the Braves that Citi Fieldran out of their celebratory fireworks. Quite the way to snap a seven-game losing streak. Cincinnati —Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Hamad Medjedovic on Tuesday at the Cincinnati Openfor his 50th win of the year, becoming the first ATP player to win 50 matches in four consecutive seasons since Novak Djokovic in 2016. Long way to go: As impressive as Carlito's streak is, he's less than halfway to matching Djokovic, who won 50+ matches every year from 2007-16.
