Damar Hamlin reveals new tattoo inspired by cardiac arrest incidentNew Foto - Damar Hamlin reveals new tattoo inspired by cardiac arrest incident

Behind every tattoo is a story – andDamar Hamlin'sis a doozy. TheBuffalo Billssafety is showing off some new ink ahead of the 2025NFLseason, which will be his second since suffering cardiac arrest on the field in Cincinnati. His new art, created by famed tattoo artist Ganga, which covers Hamlin's entire back, works to convey everything about the happenings on the field from that January day. View this post on Instagram A post shared by No Pain By Ganga (@nopain.by.ganga) When Hamlin woke up following the near-fatal incident, he famously asked, "Did we win?" Those words are featured prominently on Hamlin's back, surrounded by a "Monday Night Football" logo along with words of encouragement and a "Pray for Damar" flag. Ganga also added a Paycor Stadium element to the entire display, which was famously the site of Hamlin's cardiac arrest. Coupled with plenty of No. 3's, the tattoo managed to accomplish just about every element of the incident. Hamlin's heart stopped after making a tackle against the Cincinnati Bengals on "Monday Night Football" on Jan. 2, 2023. He briefly got up and then fell to the ground, prompting a rush of medical personnel onto the field. After providing CPR, Hamlin was loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance. The game was suspended and postponed. In the meantime, Hamlin spent time on a ventilator before being able to talk to his family and breathe on his own on Jan. 6. It was an unforgettable moment in NFL history, one that Hamlin would never forget, especially. Now he has the entire story on his back. Entertainment/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Jillian Michaelsrose to fame for her dedication to fitness, but it seems she doesn't always apply that same dedication to friendship. Bob Harper, who cohosted 12 seasons ofThe Biggest Loserwith Michaels, said in a recentinterview withThe Guardianthat she was not among the alums of the controversial reality competition series who reached out to him after he suffered a heart attack. "We weren't besties, but we were partners on a television show for a very long time," he said. Michaels' silence "spoke volumes to me," Harper continued, adding, "I would not expect Jillian Michaels to do anything other than what she wants to do." Entertainment Weeklyhas reached out to a representative for Michaels for comment. The Biggest Loserwrapped up its 18th and final season in 2020, by which time Michaels hadn't served as cohost in six years. But Harper and Michaels launched the series together, driving hundreds of contestants through grueling trials and tribulations to lose weight over the course of their dozen shared seasons. Harper had a major heart attackhe described as "widowmaker"in 2017, three years after Michaels left the series for good. "I was in full cardiac arrest… My heart stopped. Not to be dramatic, but I was dead. I was on that ground dead," he explained at the time, saying he believed the only reason he survived is that two doctors happened to be at the gym where he went down. Trae Patton/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty The Biggest Loserwas criticized during its time for thequality of its weight-loss regimensand allegations that contestants had beengiven caffeine pills. The series' history will soon be explored in Netflix's documentaryFit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser, which promises to unpack the good, the bad, and the ugly of the contentious reality program. Trump is "not whitewashing slavery," Michaels argued, insisting that "you cannot tie imperialism and racism and slavery just to one race, which is pretty much what every single [museum] exhibit does." Host Abby Phillip said she was surprised that Michaels appeared to be "trying to litigate who was the beneficiary of slavery," but Michaels held firm: "Every single thing is like, 'Oh, no, no, no, this is all because white people bad'… That's just not the truth." Khamzat Chimaevlooked delighted. The source of his mirth was a boisterous crowd gathered in Chicago for the final press conference before he fights UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319 on Saturday, Aug. 16. Boos drowned out Du Plessis as he tried to answer the first question. "Well, that was one of the best boos I've heard,'' Du Plessis said when the noise finally died down. "Well done, gents, well done.'' Almost as loud as the boos were the cheers for Chimaev, the Russian-born fighter with a bushy beard, scarred lip and mischievous grin. He has electrified fans with brutal victories en route to a 14-0 record and his first title show almost feels overdue as he prepares to face South Africa's Du Plessis (23-2). "Are you asking me if this is the fight of the year?'' UFC's Dana White said in response to a question at the press conference, and he grinned. "Yes, this is a big fight.'' Maybe even bigger than initally realized gauged by the energy of the crowd that Chimaev fed with the grin and tough talk. "Just going to go and (mess) him up, bro,'' he said of Du Plessis. "That's it, man.'' Chimaev also said, "I come to take over, man. Take his head.'' Take his head? The crowd roared. Of course the real show will take place in the octagon at the United Center when the 31-year-old fighters clash in a fight scheduled for five rounds. "You have two of the best in the world right now in their prime for the title,'' White said. "This is one of the best fights we've had in a long time. I don't know how it plays out.'' The sound of the crowd will let everyone know. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Khamzat Chimaev vs Dricus Du Plessis UFC 319 press conference electric

Texas Dems to Return as California Prepares Counter-RedistrictingNew Foto - Texas Dems to Return as California Prepares Counter-Redistricting

California Gov.Gavin Newsom speaks about the "Election Rigging Response Act" at a press conference at the Democracy Center at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles on Aug. 14, 2025. Credit - Mario Tama—Getty Images "Today is Liberation Day in the State of California," Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday, as he formally launched an ambitious campaign that would redraw maps in the Democratic state to counterRepublican gerrymandering efforts in Texas. At the campaign launch in Little Tokyo, Newsomfollowed through on his warningto President Donald Trump, spearheading a plan to hold special elections in the Golden State in November. The vote, if the legislature approves, would allow the state to seek California approval to redraw its congressional district maps if another state pushes through with redistricting. Newsom said California's redistricting plan was a direct response to Trump's plans to "rig the system" and secure future Republican election victories. "It's not good enough to just hold hands, have a candlelight vigil, and talk about the way the world should be," he said. "We have got to recognize the cards that have been dealt, and we have got to meet fire with fire." The plan escalates a multi-state political standoff, as Republicans hope to keep their slim majority in Congress after 2026 midterms and Democrats hope to break Trump's control of the federal government. As Border Patrol officialsswarmed outside Newsom's eventThursday, in an apparent show of force against his efforts to lead an anti-Trump resistance movement, Newsom said he will "not be intimidated." Several attendees carried "Defend Democracy" placards, while Newsom and multiple speakers spoke at a podium that read "Election Rigging Response Act." A newwebsitefor a campaign with the same name shows financial backing from the House Democrats' principal super PAC and Democratic megadonor Bill Bloomfield. The campaign's launch comes as Texas' Democratic lawmakers, who havefled their statein protest of a redistricting push led by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, have indicated that theyplan to head homeupon the advice of their lawyers. Their return, which could come as early as Monday, may pave the way for the Republican redistricting plan to push through in Texas, though the Democrats also cited California's initiative, which they said would "neutralize" Texas', as a reason to go back. Trump earliersaidthat Republicans "are entitled to five more seats" in Congress. The California Governor also urged other blue states to "stand up" against Republican congressional redistricting plans. "We can't stand back and watch this democracy disappear, district by district all across this country," he said. Newsom—who is seen as a potentialcontender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination—then appeared to direct his message to the rest of the U.S.: "I hope we are waking up to this reality. Wake up America. Wake up to what Donald Trump is doing. Wake up to his assault. Wake up to the assault on institutions and knowledge and history. Wake up to his war on science, public health. His war against the American people." On Monday, California's legislature—which is exactly three-quarters Democratic—plans to introduce several bills ahead of the November election. Underproposed legislation, the state would retain its Citizens Redistricting Commission—an independent commission currently composed of five Democrats, five Republicans, and four independents, which has drawn congressional district maps since 2010. But this commission's maps would be temporarily replaced—until 2030—by maps that the state's Democratic supermajority legislature draws if Republican-led states like Texas go ahead with their own partisan redistricting plans. The legislative package will also contain a bill calling for a special election on Nov. 4, 2025, for Californians to approve or reject this plan as well as a bill to reimburse counties for administering the special election. The Democrats' new maps have yet to be released, and Newsom said they will come out "in the next few days." But California is aiming to flip fiveGOP seatsin direct response to five seats Texas Republicans wish to secure in their redistricting. Politicoobtaineda chart outlining which Republican districts are targeted in the plan. Though not final, the list reveals that the state's 1st, 3rd, and 41st districts may be completely flipped from safe Republican seats to safe Democratic seats, while six other seats, including one held by a Republican, will tilt further in the Democratic direction. While Newsom said he was confident in California's legislative leaders to pass the package, it won't necessarily be easy. California's Secretary of Stateimposedan Aug. 22 deadline for lawmakers to vote on the bill and declare that a special election will take place. This means the bills will have to sprint through California's legislature, getting the approval of lawmakers in both chambers, right after they've returned following a summer recess. Redistricting the blue state would also be an expensive undertaking. In aletterresponding to questions from Republican Rep. Ken Calvert, whose district is at risk of being flipped, the Riverside County registrar of voters said that it could cost the county up to $16 million to hold the special election. CBSreportedthat the special election could cost up to $4 million in San Joaquin County and up to $6.8 million in Sacramento County. And those millions could be spent on an initiative that so far seems unpopular among the state's residents: a recent poll by Politico and the Citrin Center for Public Opinion Researchshowedthat California voters prefer the current independent commission over Newsom's plan to have the legislature redraw the maps. Also complicating Newsom's efforts is a well-funded opposition. The independent commission was considered a bipartisan triumph when it was first created in 2008, under then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican who has since opposed Trump. The reform aimed at removing political bias from the democratic process was bankrolled by Charles Munger Jr., a Palo Alto physicist and son of the late billionaireCharlie Munger, Warren Buffett's longtime business partner. Today, Munger looks set to challenge Newsom's effort : in a post on an X account created just last month, hesaid: "Any attempt to undermine the nonpartisan California Redistricting Commission will be strongly opposed in the courts and at the ballot box." Amy Thoma Tan, a spokesperson for Munger, said in a statement that he "will vigorously defend the reforms he helped pass." Tan added that Munger's previous successes show that they "have the resources necessary" to counter Newsom's gerrymandering efforts. According toPolitico, Munger has already recruited consultants to kickstart his opposition campaign. Schwarzenegger could also be a powerful spokesperson against the movement. "He calls gerrymandering evil, and he means that," Schwarzenegger spokesperson Daniel Ketchell toldPolitico. "He's opposed to what Texas is doing, and he's opposed to the idea that California would race to the bottom to do the same thing." The Texas House Democratic Caucus had said that they would return home after California lawmakers introduced their redistricting proposal, and after the legislative session that Texas Gov. Abbott called ends Friday. State Rep. Gene Wu, the House Democratic leader, said that "as Democrats across the nation join our fight to cause these maps to fail their political purpose, we're prepared to bring this battle back to Texas under the right conditions and to take this fight to the courts." The Texas Democratic lawmakers fled in a bid to prevent their state's legislature from achieving the required quorum to advance the Republicans' redistricting plans. Abbottthreatened them with arrest and removal from officeand has said that he will call for another special session with the exact same agenda to make sure that the Texas redistricting plan moves forward. "There will be no reprieve for the derelict Democrats who fled the state and abandoned their duty to the people who elected them," Abbottsaid. "I will continue to call special session after special session until we get this Texas first agenda passed." Contact usatletters@time.com.

Raiders' Ashton Jeanty shows big-play ability in joint practice with the 49ersNew Foto - Raiders' Ashton Jeanty shows big-play ability in joint practice with the 49ers

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The 49ers bottled up Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty for the most part Thursday, similar to what Seattle did ina preseason game a week earlierin holding him to minus-1 yard on three carries. But Jeanty still provided a reminder in the joint practice of why he wasdrafted sixth overall this yearby Las Vegas. He found an opening to the left side of the offensive line, hit the hole hard and was off and running for a 72-yard touchdown. "He learns and he grows with every single experience," Raiders quarterback Geno Smith said. "That's something that's going to make him a great player because he's getting better (each) day. He definitely took another step today." The teams practiced in front of more than 2,000 fans at the Raiders' facility, and they will meet in a preseason game Saturday at Allegiant Stadium. The domed stadium will provide a much different atmosphere than the outside fields in which the temperatures pushed 100 degrees. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said he is planning to play at least some starters on Saturday, including possibly quarterback Brock Purdy for the first time this preseason. But the banged-up 49ers are missing several potential starters to injuries that kept them out of the practice Thursday and also will for the upcoming game. Defensive end Nick Bosa (neck) was among those not practicing, a list that included safety Jason Pinnock (heel), cornerback Tre Brown (heel), guard Ben Bartch (elbow), cornerback Upton Stout (calf), wide receiver Jordan Watkins (ankle) and defensive end Robert Beal (abductor). Then on Thursday, defensive tackle C.J. West hyperextended his knee and is expected to miss at least one week. "I think there are three healthy starters on defense right now, so I have to decide on those three guys," Shanahan said about the game Saturday "But it does put a lot more pressure on the threes. The twos become the ones, the threes become the twos, and we don't really have threes right now. I look at it all and how much time you're getting in the next few weeks, and I'd like to get a lot of work for as many guys as I can on Saturday." The Raiders are much healthier, but rookie wide receiver Dont'e Thornton — who has been practicing with the starters — banged his head and left practice. Raiders coach Pete Carroll said he didn't think the injury was serious. Keeping it mostly calm The intensity between the former Bay Area rivals increased as the temperatures rose, but the four skirmishes were minor. "We were out here missing 20 guys," Shanahan said. "We have some positions that don't really have enough to go. If you get punched and you throw a punch back, I told the guys, it shows how mentally weak you are because all you're going to do is leave five guys left to do the whole practice." Carroll said it was important for the focus to be on the tasks at hand. "We come here to play good football and get better, and I think both sides did a great job of showing that," Carroll said. Pumping up a teammate Raiders wide receiver Tre Tucker dropped a pass at one point in the practice, and Smith immediately went over and gave him a pep talk. Tucker responded by making two outstanding touchdown catches, one falling on his back in the end zone and the other over 49ers standout cornerback Deommodore Lenoir. "We strive for perfection, but we're all human," Smith said. "The main thing whenever a guy makes a mistake or anything happens out there that we don't want to happen, it's about showing that we have each other's back. That's what we're here for, and they do it for me as well." Seattle in Las Vegas The 49ers and Seahawks are NFC West rivals, so it should be a little surprise that the Raiders' defense looked a little familiar to San Francisco players. Carroll is in his first season in Las Vegas after 14 years in Seattle where he made the Legion of Boom defense among the NFL's fiercest. "You could see them doing that now, which is pretty cool," Purdy said. "I think they're going to continue to get better with it when you've got (Raiders defensive end) Maxx Crosby and those guys rushing the pocket.
