Seattle Mariners outfielder Víctor Robles completely erupted during a rehab assignment on Sunday night. Robles, who is currently playing with the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate out of Tacoma, was hit by a pitch in the third inning of their matchup with the Las Vegas Aviators, the Triple-A affiliate of the Athletics. Aviators starter Joe Estes' first pitch to Robles went high and inside, and hit Robles square near his head. Robles, after briefly collecting himself, then launched the bat hard at Estes. Robles was immediately thrown out of the game while the catcher stood there, stunned. Robles then charged at Estes and had to be held back as things escalated quickly on the field. He was later carted off the field. It's unclear if anything else happened on Sunday night to prompt that reaction, though he's sure to face some sort of punishment from the league in the near future. Robles signed with the Mariners midway through last season after he spent his first eight years in the league with the Washington Nationals. He held a .273 ERA with 12 hits in 10 games before he went down with the shoulder injury. It's unclear how long Robles was going to be down in the minors before the incident, but Sunday's outburst certainly doesn't help things for him. The Mariners, meanwhile, hold a 68-57 record and sit in second in the AL West.

"Family Matters"' star Bryton James reveals plan for animated reboot with original cast is still 'floating around'

Craig Sjodin/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty In an age of reboots, prequels, sequels, and spinoffs,Bryton Jameshas a novel plan for bringingFamily Mattersback: switching up the medium. The actor, who spent eight seasons playing adolescent Richie Crawford on the beloved sitcom, tellsEntertainment Weeklyexclusively that he's "had an idea to take the show and turn it into an animated series," which would involve "taking the old episodes and modernizing them and kind of starting from scratch for the new generation." James — whorecently crossed overfromThe Young and the Restlessto the soap's new sister seriesBeyond the Gates— says that he "got pretty far along" with his animatedFamily Mattersidea, including getting "a production company in line to finance" and bringing "everybody on board," even breakout starJaleel White. But, he adds, "it's sitting inWarner Bros.' hands right now… That plan is still kind of floating around out there, and I'm still trying to pursue it." A source familiar with Warner Bros. Animation tells EW that they are aware of James' interest in doing a reboot but the project has not moved beyond that. ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Representatives for Warner Bros. TV didn't immediately respond toEntertainment Weekly's request for comment. Family Mattersaired for nine seasons, from 1989 to 1998. The comically heartfelt look at the lives of the Winslows, a middle-class Black family living in Chicago, helped launch the careers ofReginald VelJohnson, who played Winslow patriarch Carl; White, who played pesky neighbor Steve Urkel; and James, who played Carl's nephew. Sign up forEntertainment Weekly's free daily newsletterto get breaking TV news, exclusive first looks, recaps, reviews, interviews with your favorite stars, and more. Several members of the coreFamily Matterscast have died in the years since, including Michelle Thomas (Myra Monkhouse), who died from a rare cancer just months after the series finale aired, and Rosetta LeNoire (Estelle Winslow), who died of complications from diabetes in 2002. But James says it wasn't hard to get the rest of the cast on board with his reboot idea, especially since a 2018 reunion helped "put me back in touch with a lot of the cast that I'd kind of fallen off from." He adds, "I still very much keep in touch with Telma Hopkins, who played my mom... [Darius McCrary], who played Eddie Winslow, I just saw [Kellie Shanygne Williams, who played Laura], a lot of them are living — I think [Jo Marie Payton] and Kellie are living on the East Coast, so they came out for Telma's birthday a few years back and I got to see them again. Jaleel, I've kept in touch with him off and on, a great mentor at this point in my life." As for why James thought to go the animated route rather than a traditional sequel series like theSex and the Cityfollow-upAnd Just Like Thator theBig Bang Theoryprequel riffYoung Sheldon, the actor explains, "I just remember these episodes, some of the storylines they'd come up with for Urkel, you know, I remember when he created a tornado in the kitchen one time. So they kind of bordered on fantasy, and you could really take the show into animation and have us voice our characters again." Needing only to capture the original cast's voices, not assemble them for traditional production, also means "we wouldn't have to all be in the same city to come together again to be on camera." James adds with a laugh, "Jaleel wouldn't have to put the outfit on either, and we could still deliver what the show did for the audience and for families especially, and revamp it for the new generation." In White's 2024 memoir,Growing Up Urkel, said that he'dalready said no to a rebootpitched to him byFamily Mattersproducer Bob Boyett. The series would've seen his Urkel and longtime crush Laura finally get married and have a kid, Steve Urkel Jr., who would've been the focus. "I turned it down for several reasons," White wrote. "The script would have been the same, and the show's dynamics no longer work in the world that we live in." He instead pitched something semiautobiographical: "We cast a good actor and a smart kid to play Jaleel, a twelve-year-old from Pasadena who lands the part of Steve Urkel. We depict all the challenges that came with growing up in the nineties and being the kid who played that character. The show could explore the dynamic between me and my parents, struggling to adapt to fame while trying to live regular lives." That series never came to pass. As for James, he believes there are "fans ofFamily Matters[who] would be interested" in his version, which he hopes would allow the show to be "brought back to life in a new, fresh way." Quentin Tarantino Says 'Inglourious Basterds' Is 'My Masterpiece,' 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Is 'My Favorite' and 'Kill Bill' Is the Movie 'I Was Born to Make'New Foto - Quentin Tarantino Says 'Inglourious Basterds' Is 'My Masterpiece,' 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Is 'My Favorite' and 'Kill Bill' Is the Movie 'I Was Born to Make'

Even Quentin Tarantino has a favorite Tarantino movie. During an expansive interview on "The Church of Tarantino" podcast, the two-time Oscar winner revealed which of his films is his favorite and which he thinks is his best. More from Variety Quentin Tarantino Says Directing 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Sequel 'Unenthused Me,' Needs to Be in 'Uncharted Territory' For Final Movie: 'I've Got to Not Know What I'm Doing Again' Quentin Tarantino Scrapped 'The Movie Critic' Because It 'Was Too Much Like' 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' and 'Who Wants to See a Movie About a F-ing Movie Critic?' Simon Pegg Says Quentin Tarantino's Unmade 'Star Trek' Movie Was 'Bats-- Crazy': 'It Was Everything You Would Expect' "'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' is my favorite, 'Inglourious Basterds' is my best," Tarantino said. "But I think 'Kill Bill' is the ultimate Quentin movie, like nobody else could've made it. Every aspect about it is so particularly ripped, like with tentacles and bloody tissue, from my imagination and my id and my loves and my passion and my obsession. So I think 'Kill Bill' is the movie I was born to make, I think 'Inglourious Basterds' is my masterpiece, but 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' is my favorite." The "Pulp Fiction" director then picked his favorite and best from his screenplays. "I think 'Inglourious Basterds' is my best script, and I think 'Hateful Eight' and 'Once Upon a Time In Hollywood' are right behind," he explained. "But, there's an aspect of 'Hateful Eight' that I actually think is probably my best directing of my material, i.e., the material is written and it's solid. So it's not like I have to create it, like 'Kill Bill,' it's solid, it's right there and I actually think it's my best servicing [of] my material as a director." Despite Tarantino's affinity for "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," David Fincher will direct the highly anticipated sequel, "The Adventures of Cliff Booth," for Netflix. Elsewhere in the interview, Tarantino said he passed on directing the project because the idea of his 10th and final film being a sequel"unenthused" him. "I love this script, but I'm still walking down the same ground I've already walked," Tarantino said. "It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I've got to not know what I'm doing again. I've got to be in uncharted territory." Tarantino also discussed his long-rumored 10th and final film, "The Movie Critic." He said the project was ultimately scrapped because it wastoo similar to his previous work. "I wasn't really excited about dramatizing what I wrote when I was in pre-production, partly because I'm using the skillset that I learned from 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' [of] 'How are we going to turn Los Angeles into the Hollywood of 1969 without using CGI?'" he explained. "It was something we had to pull off. We had to achieve it. It wasn't for sure that we could do it. … 'The Movie Critic,' there was nothing to figure out. I already kind of knew, more or less, how to turn L.A. into an older time. It was too much like the last one." Listen to Tarantino's entire interviewhere. MLB's hottest team has no big stars and a third of the Los Angeles Dodgers' budget. What is their secret?New Foto - MLB's hottest team has no big stars and a third of the Los Angeles Dodgers' budget. What is their secret?

Among the usual top baseball teams this season, there is another, more unexpected name. TheMilwaukee Brewershave some exciting young players but no real stars and their payroll is the tenth lowest of the 30Major League Baseballteams, about one third of what the Los Angeles Dodgers pay. Yet they are the hottest team inMLBright now, frequently at the top of the power rankings and riding a franchise record streak of 14 consecutive wins, sealed by a 6-5 victory against the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings on Saturday. Not since the Seattle Mariners in 2022 has any MLB team enjoyed such a long winning run. And somewhat befitting this team, eight of those are comeback wins, a rarity among teams who have recorded 14 wins in a row. They are now at 78-44 with a nine-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central and are eight games better than the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies, the National League's next best teams. Such success isn't entirely new to the Brewers – they have made the postseason in six of the past seven seasons – but their recent record-breaking exploits and rise to become the hottest team in baseball have focused the national spotlight on the ragtag team from Milwaukee. So, if they don't have big stars or a big checkbook, how exactly are they putting such a run together? Such a streak represents a remarkable turnaround from the start of the season when the Brewers were swept by the New York Yankees and projected to be an under .500 team. Still, while much of its pitching staff has returned from injury since March and April, the Brewers have not been able to rely on one big hitter. Even after they lost Jackson Chourio, one of their best young sluggers this season, to injury when they played the Washington Nationals earlier this month, all nine starting players got a hit, the league-leading eighth time that's happened this season. "Everyone is contributing every single night," rookie Isaac Collins said. "It's a new guy every night … one through nine we're just getting the job done, getting through one pitch at a time. And whoever is called upon is delivering for us." While the headlines are often dominated by big sluggers, the Brewers excel in other areas. They run hard; defend hard; prevent runs; and are the second best team in MLB at stealing bases. Manager Pat Murphy simply attributes his team's success to a group of "average Joes playing hard." "I don't think that's a secret formula. It certainly isn't me. It's just that this is the group we're with. We're not gonna spend a lot of money, we didn't sign anybody in the offseason. We didn't spend money. We dropped money. "That's just who we are. Let's be authentic about it. We're not gonna go sign the free agents. If we play this way, maybe we got a shot, maybe we don't." While Murphy may seek to downplay his role, it is his personality and approach to recruiting which seeps through the Brewers' organization. A former college baseball head coach at Arizona State, Murphy always sought to recruit "orange Life Savers," as he once described it in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, referencing the popular candy. "What's the first thing you do when you get a pack of Life Savers?" Murphy said. "You open it up and you take the red ones. Everyone likes the red ones. Nobody wants the orange. I always had a theory that I liked the orange Life Savers." Unlike many other smaller-market teams, the Brewers aren't built on drafting and developing players – they only have seven homegrown players on their current 26-man roster. Instead, 13 players from their roster have been acquired in trades, the third highest tally in the league behind only the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners, following Murphy's "orange Life Savers" theory. They've made a habit of spotting potential unrealized elsewhere, whether that is in someone like Andrew Vaughn – the No. 3 pick in the 2019 Draft who had failed to make much of an impression at the Chicago White Sox – pitcher Quinn Priester who had a 6.46 ERA at points early in his career or even Isaac Collins, who was a ninth-round pick for the Colorado Rockies in 2019 before playing in the minor leagues for the Brewers. All of them have become integral for the Brewers. Collins' on-base percentage is the 11th highest in the league and he might well be named NL Rookie of the Year, at the age of 28. Priester has a 3.48 ERA now while Vaughn has become an important part of the Brewers' lineup. Many of the players the Brewers have acquired through trades are still young, still hungry to prove themselves. They have the joint fifth-youngest batting order in the MLB this season, after offloading veterans like Devin Williams and Willy Adames during the offseason. Chourio, their 21-year-old budding superstar, became the youngest player ever to have a 20-20 season last year. He has continued that form this season, batting .276 with 17 home runs and a 20-game hitting streak between July 2-27. Meanwhile, rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, who wields a fastball which reaches speeds as high as 103 mph (166 kph) has announced himself as an impressive talent too. Though he struggled on his return from injury on Friday, he had a 2.70 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 14 walks in his seven starts before getting injured. With the likes of Misiorowksi and Chourio proving themselves and Murphy at the helm, the Brewers are looking capable of making a deep run into the postseason. Darren Aronofsky Tried to Stoke Rivalry Between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis On 'Black Swan' Set: 'Was All in Good Fun'New Foto - Darren Aronofsky Tried to Stoke Rivalry Between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis On 'Black Swan' Set: 'Was All in Good Fun'

"Black Swan" returns to theaters on Aug. 21 and 24, playing in Imax for the first time to celebrate fifteen years since the psychological thriller first hit cinemas. Director Darren Aronofsky recently reunited with stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis to reflect on the film's milestone anniversary forVogue, and their discussion revealed that the director had tried and failed to stoke rivalry between the two stars to reflect their on-screen feud. "My take is that I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue," admitted Aronofsky, "Mila and Natalie both realized very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood. They're both very clever and were instantly privy to whatever trick I was playing." More from Variety 'Black Swan' Getting 15th Anniversary Imax Re-Release 2025 Made in NY Awards to Honor Darren Aronofsky, Michelle Buteau, Tracy Morgan and Thomas J. O'Donnell (EXCLUSIVE) 'Fountain of Youth' Review: John Krasinski and Natalie Portman Bicker Their Way to Immortality Aronofsky's method was meant to help the actors get into character, as both play ballerinas in the film, competing for top billing in a prestigious production of "Swan Lake." The on-screen contention between the two devolves into a fever dream of violence, deception and abuse— both mental and physical. Behind the scenes, however, Portman and Kunis were too professional and supportive of one another to give in to Aronofsky's tactics. "I remember being separated from Mila and that we weren't in the same space a lot when we weren't shooting," Portman recalled, but when the director would try bating her with comments about Kunis' talent and commitment, she responded, "She's so fucking talented and I love her so much and I'm happy she's doing a great job!" Kunis faced similar situations. She said, "Darren would tell me, 'Nat is working really, really hard. She's not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off.' Then I would text Nat and she'd be like, '…No, I'm not?' I think that's how we figured out what Darren was up to, but it was all in good fun." Nevertheless, both actors reflected fondly on their experience working with Aronofsky. "'Black Swan' was the first time I felt like I had a mind meld with a director, where each of us always knew exactly what to say. Every time we talked it felt like he gave me a little key that unlocked a scene for me," said Portman. Kunis added that when journalists would ask her about Aronofsky's intensity on set, she'd respond, "'He's actually a really kind, lovely guy who took us to see 'Twilight' one time because we had the day off.' And journalists were always so disappointed that he wasn't some tortured soul who treated us like garbage." Their collaboration paid off, as "Black Swan" earned $329.4 million at the worldwide box office. Portman took home her first Academy Award for her performance and the film garnered four additional nominations— including best picture and best director for Aronofsky. Portman summed it up well when reflecting on her first time watching the film, calling it "shocking and exhilarating in a really wonderful way." Audiences will be able to relive that shock and wonder in Imax next weekend, and Aronofsky's next film, "Caught Stealing," will hit theaters Aug. 29. Gal Gadot clarifies that "Snow White "didn't flop solely due to criticism from 'those who are against Israel'

Courtesy of Disney Gal Gadotis backtracking her recent comments that pressure to speak out against Israel — the actress' home country — played a major role inSnow White's failure at the box office. "I was honored to join an extraordinary interview with inspiring interviewers, whose questions go straight to the heart. Sometimes we respond to questions from an emotional place," Gadot shared in a text post to her Instagram Stories on Sunday. The actress was referring to aJerusalem Postinterview, in which she claimed that "pressure on celebrities to speak out against Israel" following the Palestinian militant group Hamas' killing of approximately 1,200 Israelis on Oct. 7, 2023, "greatly affected" the film's financial performance. "When the film came out, I felt that those who are against Israel criticized me in a very personal, almost visceral way," she wrote on Instagram. "They saw me first and foremost as an Israeli, not as an actress. That's the perspective I spoke from when I answered the question." Gal Gadot/Instagram Gadot continued, "Of course, the film didn't fail solely because of external pressures. There are many factors that determine why a film succeeds or fails, and success is never guaranteed." Entertainment Weeklyhas reached out to a representative for Gadot for comment. From backlash to an actress of Colombian descent playing the titular Disney princess toPeter Dinklageand others'criticismof the film's portrayal of dwarfs, the film had its fair share of "external pressures" to contend with.
