DETROIT (AP) —Pete Alonsohomered twice, Juan Soto went deep again and rookie Nolan McLean pitched six solid innings as theNew York Metsbeat theDetroit Tigers12-5 on Tuesday night. McLean (4-0) recovered from a rocky start to set down his final 14 batters. He gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven, becoming the first Mets pitcher to earn a win in each of his first four major league appearances. Luis Torrens launched a three-run homer for the Mets, who won the series opener 10-8 on Monday. They moved five games ahead of Cincinnati for the final National League wild card. The AL Central-leading Tigers have lost seven of nine. Alonso's first homer was a 435-foot drive in the first inning that landed between the first and second row of shrubs behind the center-field wall. Soto and Alonso hit back-to-back solo shots in a six-run seventh that gave the Mets a 12-2 cushion. Soto has 37 home runs in his first season with New York — five in the past five games. Alonso's second homer was his 33rd of the year. Jeff McNeil drove in three runs and finished with three of New York's 17 hits. Brandon Nimmo and Brett Baty also had three hits for the Mets. Detroit turned a pair of two-out walks into two runs in the first, scoring on singles off McLean before the 24-year-old righty shut them down. Tigers starter Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-2) gave up six runs on five hits and two walks over four innings, pitching for the first time since Aug. 13 in a season stunted by injuries. Detroit right-hander Chris Paddack, demoted to the bullpen, allowed six runs and eight hits over 1 1/3 innings. Key moment Torrens homered in a five-run fourth, giving the Mets a 6-2 lead. Key stat Soto homered again, one day after becoming the first player in the modern era to hit a go-ahead grand slam and a go-ahead triple that scored more than one run in the same game. Up next Mets RHP Clay Holmes (11-6, 3.60 ERA) and Tigers RHP Casey Mize (12-5, 3.95) are scheduled to start Wednesday. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart is listed as the backup quarterback behind New York Giants starter Russell Wilson on the team's unofficial Week 1 depth chart. Dart, selected 25th overall out of Ole Miss, is listed ahead of 10-year veteran Jameis Winston after a promising preseason and training camp. New York opens the regular season on Sunday on the road against the Washington Commanders. The Giants had the day off Tuesday. Head coach Brian Daboll and Wilson are scheduled to meet with the media on Wednesday. Dart, 22, was 32-of-47 passing for 372 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the preseason and rushed for a TD against the New York Jets, igniting optimism around a position that became a trainwreck in 2024. Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen moved on from Daniel Jones in November after he requested his release in response to being benched. Daboll and the Giants ran into more trouble when Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock and Tim Boyle failed to produce. New York lost 11 of its final 12 games in 2024, when it finished 3-14. Daboll has committed to 36-year-old Wilson, a free-agent signee on his third team in three seasons, as the Giants' starter. Wilson and Winston, 31, were signed for different roles, with Daboll and Schoen made clear early in the offseason. --Field Level Media

Mathew Tsang/Getty Shania Twain revealed that her fans have given her a "newfound appreciation" for her song "You're Still the One" She and her ex-husband, music producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, wrote the Grammy-winning song together A seventh album from Twain is currently in the works, which will feature "storytelling" Shania Twainstill thinks this song is the one, despite how it came to be. Speaking withETalk in a TikTok videooriginally shared on YouTube on Aug. 11, the country star, 60, reflected on the 1997 song "You're Still the One," which she wrote with her ex-husband, music producerRobert "Mutt" Lange. "Well, I'm not just saying this because it seems obvious, but 'You're Still the One' really is one of my favorites to do live," Twain began. "I've gone through quite a few stages with that song of, not really even wanting to sing it live for a while, just thinking, 'Well, okay, I'm divorced now, does it really mean what it used to mean when I wrote it?' " Never miss a story — sign up forPEOPLE's free daily newsletterto stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. However, Twain now has a "newfound appreciation" for the song again. "I have for a while." "It's mostly fans, fans love it, they want to hear it. It means so much to them in so many ways. They're either getting married to it, or have been married to it, or had an anniversary, or a friendship, or whatever it is. "It's more the meaning that it is, or that it represents, to everybody else that makes it so meaningful to me again," added Twain. The Queen of Country Pop also mentioned that she is "in the middle of making" a seventh album. "It's going to be different than maybe what anyone is expecting. There's a lot of storytelling in this album," she teased. Terry Wyatt/Getty "You're Still the One" was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1999 and took home two: Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. It was also nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. It spent 42 weeks on theBillboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 1 on May 2, 1998, for two weeks. Twain and Lange, 76,were married from 1993 until 2008. They share24-year-old son Eja. She is currently married toFrĂ©dĂ©ric ThiĂ©baud, with whom she tied the knot on New Year's Day in 2011. Twain spoke to PEOPLE in Februaryabout being "put in a box" by the music industry, by fans and executives. "If I feel like I'm being put in a box, I start to panic," Twain said at the time. "I run in any direction I can because I don't want to be contained. I have to be able to find my own way." "Sometimes I'm not even sure where I'm going myself. How can somebody else tell me that, right? So I need the freedom to explore and to land wherever that exploration takes me," added Twain. Mathew Tsang/Getty Twain also said that it's "really great to see" artists go beyond their typical genre of music. "I'm always championing anybody that does things that are unexpected by the industry, or unexpected by the audience." "They may not have seen it coming, but the artist does have a sense of where they want to go exploring, and I really think it's wonderful that they do, that they explore it, and they take it to whatever limit interests them." CEO apologizes for taking signed hat from boy at US Open: 'In the heat of the moment'New Foto - CEO apologizes for taking signed hat from boy at US Open: 'In the heat of the moment'

The CEO of a Polish paving company issued an apology after taking a signed hat that tennis player Kamil Majchrzak intended to give to a young boy at theUS Open. Piotr Szczerek, the CEO of Drogbruk, a Poland-based paving company, said in a Sept. 1social media statementthat he takes "full responsibility for my extremely poor judgment and hurtful actions." In a video that sparked widespread backlash on social media, Szczerek is seen swiping the signed hat as Majchrzak hands it to a boy in the crowd. The incident took place as Majchrzak celebrated his second-round win against Karen Khachanov at the tournament on Aug. 28. "I would like to unequivocally apologize to the young boy, his family, all the fans, and the player himself," Szczerek said, adding that he sent the hat back to the boy. "I hope, at least to a small extent, I was able to repair the harm I caused," he said. In his statement, Szczerek said he thought the signed hat was intended for his sons, who had previously asked for autographs. "It was never my intent to steal away a prized memento from the young fan," he said. "I became caught up in the heat of the moment and the joy of the victory." Szczerek added, "Regardless of what I believed was happening, the actions I took hurt the young boy and disappointed the fans." The statement also dispelled misinformation circulating online that Szczerek hired a law firm as a result of the incident. "For years, my wife and I have been involved in supporting children and young athletes, but this incident has shown me that a moment of inattention can undo years of work and support. It is a painful but necessary lesson in humility," Szczerek said. Drogbruk, Szczerek's company, also shared thestatementon social media. "The Grand Dame" is free. "Real Housewives of Potomac" star Karen Huger was released from prison Tuesday morning, according to the Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. The 62-year-old served a one-year sentence at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Maryland for driving under the influence and other charges. She wassentenced to two yearsin prison, with one suspended. Huger served her full time in the facility, according to a spokesperson for the department of correction and rehabilitation. Maryland has adiminution credit systemin which some inmates can earn a reduction in their sentence. Inmates who are not eligible for this system include those convicted of serious sexual offenses. Huger, a fan-favorite original "RHOP" cast member coined "the Grand Dame,"was convicted latelast year by aMontgomery County juryof DUI and other charges connected to a March 19, 2024, solo crash near Oaklyn Drive in Potomac. No one was injured in the crash. Prosecutors had requested six months in prison and defense lawyers wanted no time in favor of rehabilitation. Huger was branded a repeat offender by prosecutors, who pointed out three previous alcohol-related traffic cases between 2006 and 2011. None of those previous cases had led to prison time. Huger was sentenced to prison time, $2,900 in fines and five years of probation. She admitted fault in court, saying she was grateful no one was injured by her actions. Now that she's been released, Huger won't be allowed to drive for a year, and, if she violates probation, she could be sent back to prison to serve the year of suspended time. An attorney for Huger did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Fans and reality stars alike reacted to the news of Huger's release online. "She should've not been in jail, anyway," one commenter wrote on a post announcing her release. "Welcome home, Queen." Former "Real Housewives of Atlanta" peach-holder Marlo Hampton posted an Instagram story in support of Huger's homecoming. "Welcome home sis," Hampton captioned a video of Huger in full glam. Some were not as happy to see her free. "Not enough time for that drunk!" one commenter wrote. Others online speculated on if she would return to "RHOP." The show's 10th season will premiere on Oct. 5. "I want her back on the show ASAP, living her best life," one commenter wrote. Another commenter believes the Grand Dame will make an appearance on the season 10 reunion. Bravo did not respond to a request for comment.

Micah Parsons reportedly made last-ditch effort to sign extension with Cowboys 2 days before Packers tradeNew Foto - Micah Parsons reportedly made last-ditch effort to sign extension with Cowboys 2 days before Packers trade

Despite all the vitriol between Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys, the star pass rusher made one last-ditch effort to try and get a deal done. Two days before he was traded to the Green Bay Packers, Parsons had his agentreach out to the Cowboysto try and bury the hatchet, according to ESPN. Parsons' agent David Mulugheta reportedly sent an email to Jerry and Stephen Jones, telling the pair Mulugheta would come to Dallas or hop on a video call to hammer out a deal. Jerry Jones reportedly shut that down, saying Parsons would need toplay on his fifth-year optionif he stayed with the Cowboys in 2025, per ESPN. Jerry Jones responded to the message, saying the Cowboys were prepping a trade and if Parsons wanted to play in Dallas in 2025, he would have to do so on his fifth-year option. Parsons would become a free agent in 2026, but the team could also use the franchise tag to prevent his departure at that point. The team could use the franchise tag on Parsons twice if he played out his fifth-year option, somethingJones indicated multiple timeshe would do with Parsons. The threat created a scenario where Parsons would have played on three consecutive one-year deals with the Cowboys unless he agreed to a deal Jones believed the pair negotiated during aMarch meeting in which Mulugheta was not present. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Shortly after that, Mulugheta was allowed to engage in contract talks with the Packers. The team reportedly made a formal offer for Parsons the following day, and the deal eventually was completed. Mulugheta then worked out arecord-breaking extensionfor Parsons with the Packers. Those negotiations were "transparent and fast," a source told ESPN. Mulugheta didn't go into that much detail about the situation during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take" on Tuesday, though he confirmed Parsons wanted to make it work with the Cowboys. He'll get a chance to show the Cowboys they made the wrong decision in Week 4, when the team travels to Dallas to take on the Cowboys. Tuesday's report suggests it didn't have to end that way. Even with both sides fighting publicly, Parsons and Mulugheta tried to give it one more go with the Cowboys. If Parsons continues to play at a similar level with his new team, Cowboys fans will be left wondering what could have happened had cooler heads prevailed at the 11th hour.

Dan Lanning fires back at Mike Gundy's critique of Oregon's roster spendNew Foto - Dan Lanning fires back at Mike Gundy's critique of Oregon's roster spend

Oregon coach Dan Lanning shot back at Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's insinuation the Ducks are buying their way into contention with an excessive roster budget. "Like I said, I've got a ton of respect for coach Gundy," Lanning said as the Ducks prepare for their nonconference meeting with Oklahoma State. "Ultimately, how blessed are we being at a place that's invested in winning? If you want to be a top-10 team in college football, you better be invested in winning and we spend to win. Some people save to have an excuse for why they don't." Gundy lit the fuse with comments on his radio show suggesting the Cowboys' budget for football was pennies on the dollar compared to what Oregon spent last year alone. "We spent around $7 million over the last three years, and I think Oregon spent close to $40 (million) last year alone," Gundy said. "That was just one year. Now, I might be off a few million. What I'm saying is they're spending a lot of money. There's some schools that are doing that." Oklahoma State kicked off the season with a win over Tennessee-Martin last week and Oregon defeated Montana State. Also on his show, Gundy opined college football non-conference schedules should evolve to match the times, pairing opponents based strictly on their annual football budget. "Oregon is paying a lot, a lot of money for their team. So from a non-conference standpoint, there are coaches saying they should play teams that are spending the same amount of money," he said. Lanning was an outside linebackers coach at Georgia in 2018 when these two programs signed to play a home-and-home series. But he doesn't necessarily buy that Oklahoma State wants to check receipts to confirm a level playing field. "I can't speak on their situation, I have no idea what they got in their pockets over there," Lanning said. "I'm sure UT Martin maybe didn't have as much as them last week and they played, so we'll let it play out." --Field Level Media
