Best and worst of college football Week 1: Florida State QB trash talk, overhyped teamsNew Foto - Best and worst of college football Week 1: Florida State QB trash talk, overhyped teams

Everyone knows talking trash can get you in some hot water. Not only does it cause a stir, but failing to back it up could lead to plenty of criticism. But turning that trash talk from a prediction to a spoiler? That's some legendary stuff. It only took one game for Thomas Castellanos to cement himself inFlorida Statelore. He couldn't be stopped byAlabamain the31-17 upsetthe Seminoles quarterback said would happen two months ago. There was a collective groan when Castellanos declared Alabama didn't "have Nick Saban to save them" and "I just don't see them stopping me."It was bulletin board material for the Crimson Tide. Even more,Castellanos doubled-down on his words. You wouldn't blame anyone for expecting a blowout Alabama win and Castellanos to become the meme of the season. Instead, Castellanos proved Alabama needed Saban to stop him from running for a game-high 78 yards and a touchdown along with 152 yards in the air on just 14 attempts, leading a physical domination over a supposed College Football Playoff contender. It took guts for Castellanos to back up his trash talk, and he leads the best and worst things we saw in Week 1 of the 2025 season. College football fans rejoiced their beloved game was back, but they also poured love to theretirement of Lee Corsoafter 38 memorable years on "College GameDay." There's no debating his contributions to the sport, and while he has given us several iconic moments, it was clear Corso was reaching the end of his remarkable career. But he left proving he still got it. In his signature segment, Corso correctly picked Ohio State for his final headgear selection, his national championship pick LSU to beat Clemson and even better, was the only person to say his alma mater Florida State would upset Alabama. In the three marquee games, Corso goes 3-0. It's not often greats end their careers with such a high note, but in his final act, Corso reminded everyone he knows ball. It's practically a guarantee a team with preseason hype will get smacked by reality in Week 1. It's just a matter of who. In 2025, that belongs to Arch Manning and Alabama. The Heisman Trophy favorite, Manning struggled against Ohio State with just 38 passing yards through three quarters. He finished with 170 yards in the air but itwasn't a performance that looked like the next great college quarterback. Meanwhile, Alabama was believed to be ready to return to the title picture after an up-and-down first year with Kalen DeBoer. Instead, theCrimson Tide didn't look anything closeto a contender, beaten by Florida State team coming off a two-win season. Now, people in Tuscaloosa are already wondering if Saban's successor was a mistake. Reality hits you fast. Tulane wanted to recognize the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina by wearing blank green helmets and white jerseys in its home opener, what the team wore in its first game after the devastating hurricane. However, they weren't able to becauseNorthwestern declined the decisionas the road team. What was supposed to be a nice tribute to their city was denied. TheGreen Waveresponded by dismantling the Wildcats, 23-3, and coach Jon Sumrall made sure everyone knew it fueled the dominant win. "When you disrespect the city of New Orleans, that's what's going to happen to you. You're going to run into a team like this that had a chip on their shoulder," he said. "We might've used that for a little motivation to represent the city." "Don't disrespect the City of New Orleans, ever." Neutral site games to start the season are pretty good ideas. They provide excitement for teams and fans to travel to fun cities and stadiums while increasing national exposure. Unless it's pretty much a road game. Cincinnatiand Syracuse signed themselves up for complete hostility; the Bearcats had to deal with Nebraska fanstaking over Arrowhead Stadium− even though it was a "home" game − and the Orange were taken over by Tennessee orange in Atlanta. Essentially playing true road games, Cincinnati and Syracuse came up short and will probably rethink their future non-conference scheduling strategy. Even the greats have to shake off the offseason rust. The Oregon Duck is one of the best mascots in sports, but his 2025 debut was rocky. Its head fell off as it made its way onto the field, resulting in a full sprint back to the locker room to protect the identity. A really tough moment from the person in the costume. It could've been a bad omen, but luckily, the football team wasn't affected with a 59-13 win over Montana State. OOP 😬@TheOregonDuckjust lost his head during the run out 👀pic.twitter.com/eFsGFHw0sA — FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX)August 30, 2025 The nation's longest losing streak is no more as Kent State snapped its run of 21 consecutive defeats with a win against Merrimack. It's easy to forget how miserable the Golden Flashes have been. The last time they won a game was Sept. 16, 2023. That's 714 days of waiting. Since Kent State's last victory, Oregon has won a nation-high 23 games. The cobwebs of the victory bell finally got to be shaken off. Enjoy it Kent State. Sure it was a win over an Championship Subdivision team, but not every FBS team can say they won their game against one. Case in point. Army and Middle Tennessee State, congratulations on paying for a loss. TheBlack Knightswere the first FBS team in 2025 to lose to an FCS team in Tarleton State. A missed field goal stopped them from winning in regulation, and another failed kick doomed them in overtime for a 30-27 loss. Army paid the Texans $250,000 for the game, and it doesn't look like a great use of government funds. Middle Tennessee suffered a worse fate. Austin Peay jumped out to a 21-0 lead over theBlue Raidersand won 34-14 for its first win over an FBS team since 1987. It hasn't been revealed how much Middle Tennessee paid, but getting completing outplayed already cost too much. At leastKansas Stateavoided being on this list, barely getting past North Dakota in a game it paid $475,000 for. During the lead up to Super Bowl 57,Patrick Mahomesreflected on the historic momentthat was about to occur. Two Black quarterbacks were set to start a Super Bowl for the first time ever. "It is history. It's come a long way," Mahomes said in 2023 in advance of the game. "To be the first for something is pretty cool." Philadelphia Eaglesquarterback Jalen Hurts echoed the same sentiments. "It's history," Hurts said. Flip the calendar to the present. As the NFL gets ready to kick off a new year, a record 16 Black quarterbacks are slated to start Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season, breaking a record of 15 Black quarterbacks who startedWeek 1 of the previous season. Bryce Young, Caleb Williams, Cam Ward, C.J. Stroud, Dak Prescott, Geno Smith, Hurts, Jayden Daniels, Jordan Love, Justin Fields, Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson, Michael Penix Jr., Mahomes, Russell Wilson and Spencer Rattler. Half the NFL's starting quarterbacks in Week 1 are Black for the first time in league history. "I said about a year and a half ago half the league gonna be Black quarterbacks before long. I said probably within the next five years, and it happened before five years," Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, said to USA TODAY Sports. "If you write the top quarterback in the league, I think majority of them would be black." Marlin Briscoe was the first Black quarterback to start in modern pro football history in 1968. Williams became the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl in 1988. Warren Moon was enshrined as the first Black quarterback to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Mahomes and Hurts became the first pair of Black quarterbacks to start in the same Super Bowl in 2023. And in 2025, a record 16 Black quarterbacks are prepared to start Week 1. Micah Parsons trade signals dreaded rebuild for Dallas Cowboys "Just like last year and even the years prior, it just makes you proud to see the number just continue to keep rising. Because I know what that position used to be thought of for African Americans to be able to play, and I was part of that. It's great that the league and ownership and society and everybody is bought in and sees that these guys can play at a very, very high level, and they continue to keep giving them more opportunities," Moon told USA TODAY Sports. "The more opportunities they give them, they're turning them into a starting quarterback position. I love it." Follow USA TODAY Sports' Tyler Dragon on X@TheTylerDragon. Queen Camilla showed her mettle as a teenager when she beat back a groper with her shoeNew Foto - Queen Camilla showed her mettle as a teenager when she beat back a groper with her shoe

LONDON (AP) — Britain's Queen Camilla fought off an indecent attack when she was a teenager by taking off her shoe and bashing the assailant in the groin, according to a new book on the royal family. Camilla was on a train to London's Paddington Station in the mid-1960s when the man next to her reached out and attempted to touch her, according to an excerpt from "Power and the Palace" by Valentine Low, a former royal correspondent for the Times of London. She told former Prime Minister Boris Johnson about the attack when he was mayor of London. "Camilla said, 'I did what my mother told me, I took my shoe off and whacked him in the nuts with the heel,''' Low told the BBC. "When she got to Paddington, this in a way is the crucial bit of the story, she found a man in uniform and told him what had happened and the man was arrested. … She did the responsible thing.'' The story drew widespread coverage in the British media on Monday, with headlines ranging from the Daily Telegraph's basic "Queen fought off sex attacker" to the Sun's tabloid-style "Camilla whacked groper in goolies." Whatever the approach, the tale is sure to add to Camilla's reputation as a no-nonsense woman who has brought a bit of grit to the royal family. The story was related to Low by one of Johnson's former aides, who believed the incident was the reason for Camilla's outspoken support for charities that work with victims of domestic violence. She has been reluctant to speak about it because her experience, while upsetting, was less serious than the attacks suffered by other women and girls, Low said. "She didn't want to draw attention to her at the expense of their experiences," he said. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the report. "Power and the Palace" will be published later this month. But the book, which details the relationship between the monarchy and Britain's political leaders, has already attracted attention with excerpts published in the Times of London that suggest the late Queen Elizabeth II opposed the U.K.'s decision to leave the European Union.

Gauff, a 21-year-old from Florida, is the Grand Slam tournament's No. 3 seed.Osaka, a 27-year-old who was born in Japan and moved to the U.S. with her family at age 3, is the No. 23 seed. They have won a combined three titles at Flushing Meadows. Monday's winner will make it to this year's quarterfinals. Here is what you need to know about the most-anticipated match of the U.S. Open so far: When and where do Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka play each other Monday? The match will be held in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The exact time it will start is uncertain; that will depend on how long the contest before theirs takes to finish. Gauff vs. Osaka is the second match in the tournament's biggest arena on Monday, after Andrey Rublev of Russia plays against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in the fourth round of the men's bracket, starting at 11:30 a.m. EDT. So Gauff and Osaka could begin as early as 1:30 p.m. or perhaps closer to 2 or 3 p.m. — or maybe even later than that. There is just no way to know for sure. How can I watch Osaka vs. Gauff on TV? ESPN is showing the U.S. Open in the United States. Other countries' broadcasters arelisted here. How often have Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka met head-to-head? This will be the sixth matchup between Gauff and Osaka as pros — and the second at Flushing Meadows. Back in 2019, also in Ashe,Osaka defeated a 15-year-old Gauff in straight sets, then consoled the teary American afterward and invited her to speak to the spectators. Gauff has won three of the four matches they have played against each other since then, so she leads the head-to-head series 3-2. How many Grand Slam titles have Osaka and Gauff won? Osaka owns four Grand Slam singles championships, including atthe U.S. Open in 2018 and 2020. The other two came at the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021. 'You get to fly': Why Dutch athletes pole vault over canalsNew Foto - 'You get to fly': Why Dutch athletes pole vault over canals

KOCKENGEN, Netherlands (AP) — A split second of flight, then a landing on the sand — or a splashdown in a canal. That's the thrill of the Dutch sport of "fierljeppen" — far leaping — which sees athletes hoist themselves up and over canals on slender carbon poles in the Netherlands countryside. "The moment you are at the top of the pole and you get to jump (off) of the pole, in that small moment you get to fly and that's just really nice to experience," 25-year-old athlete Bas van Leeuwen said as jumpers gathered for a competition in a village near Utrecht this week. 'Not really that dangerous' Athletes run to a carbon pole positioned with one end in the canal and tilted toward the bank. They run along a jetty to the pole, grab on and try to shin up the pole as fast as possible before leaping to a sandy area on the other bank. Unlike in Olympic pole vaulting, the aim is distance, not height. Lose momentum, or slip too far to one side, and athletes can end up soaked in the canal. Even a successful landing on the sand means a heavy, even painful, impact. "The sport is not really that dangerous. I think more people get injured during soccer," says van Leeuwen, who's recovered from an ankle ligament injury sustained while leaping over a canal. "The most common (injury) is the ankles or the knees because when you land, that is a fragile part of the body. Sometimes it snaps." Following the farmers Using a pole to cross the Netherlands' many canals was once a handy way for farmers to get about in remote areas. It took on its modern competitive form in the 1950s and '60s, says Wim Roskam, a historian of "fierljeppen". Technology has made bigger and bigger leaps possible, and the record now stands at 22.21 meters (just over 24 yards), Roskam said. "The pole, first it was wood. Very heavy, can break," he said. "Then aluminum, less heavy but still a bit heavy, and now it's carbon." Crowds aren't big, but the leapers and their fans are dedicated to a sport which has a loyal following in Dutch villages but is nearly unknown in nearby cities, Roskam said. The community is key. "We are kind of a family. We know each other, we trust each other," Roskam said. "I can leave my phone here and it's all right, no problem. We help each other and when there (are) some sad things, we are there for each other too." ___ AP Sports Writer James Ellingworth in Zandvoort, Netherlands, contributed to this report. ___ AP sports:https://apnews.com/sports

Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs on Venice Festival Doc 'Marc by Sofia': 'I Felt Very Comfortable Exposing Everything to Sofia'New Foto - Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs on Venice Festival Doc 'Marc by Sofia': 'I Felt Very Comfortable Exposing Everything to Sofia'

Two longtime friends will make for among Venice's most-discussed red-carpet pairings. Sofia Coppola is the director of "Marc by Sofia," a new A24 documentary premiering at Venice Sept. 2. Coppola was approached by producers R.J. Cutler and Jane Cha Cutler to make the film, which is a kaleidoscopic exploration of Jacobs, tracing both his production of a single collection and his influences over time. More from Variety Kim Novak on Her Venice Film Festival Doc 'Kim Novak's Vertigo': ' It Was a Chance to Wrap Up My Life' Onslaught of Italian Movies Set to Hit Fall Festival Circuit, Signaling 'Great Resurgence' of Cinema Italiano Tony Leung Already Wants to Reunite With His 'Silent Friend' Helmer But Marvel Sequel Still Up in the Air: 'I Go With the Flow' (EXCLUSIVE) Coppola and Jacobs spoke to Variety the day before one important milestone. "I'm excited for my dress fitting tomorrow, with Marc," Coppola said. "That's always exciting and scary." Jacobs was anxious about how the film will go over, but told Variety, "I know I'm in good hands with Sofia." Marc, you've lived in the public eye, but was there a new vulnerability in allowing Sofia to tell your story? Marc Jacobs: I always feel pretty vulnerable when I show work or when I share work, but I felt very comfortable exposing everything to Sofia. It felt very natural, once I was over the initial anxiety of actually participating. Knowing Marc as well as you do, what about him jumped out — not merely as a friend, but someone you could actually make a film about? Sofia Coppola: I wasn't thinking of doing a documentary, but I always love talking to Marc. He's interesting and inspiring. And so when the Cutlers approached me — they had talked to Marc about this documentary, and would I do it? — I thought "I can't do that. Because that's my friend, I'd have to do a good job." But I kept thinking about how much fun it would be to follow this collection, popping in throughout the process, and then also wanting to share all his references and inspirations with the younger generation. There's a real mood-board quality to how the film draws together clips of all of Marc's inspirations. Coppola: I wanted it to feel like an impressionistic portrait of him, and to be able to go on these tangents about his inspirations. To try to meander, and discover as we go. It was new for me, and really fun to work this way — we got to almost collage. Working together, did both of you realize that making a film and staging a fashion show have surprising similarities? Coppola: I always felt a connection, because all creative people have some similar language, even though we work differently. Jacobs: I think back to when I first met Sofia, it was very clear that we shared certain loves — artists, musicians, moments in fashion and photography. One of the reasons why we bonded was that we did have these loves in common. I remember seeing a Fiorucci poster in her house — we've always shared that. We've always shared Sonic Youth. This felt like a continuation: Rediscovering these things that have always been catalysts for me, for her, or for both of us. Coppola: Whenever I see a leopard-print coat in his collection, I think of Mrs. Robinson [from "The Graduate"]. We both think of Mrs. Robinson. It's great to have that shorthand: I was trying to make the film feel personal, but I always want to include the audience. I never want you to not feel like part of it. Sofia, you're well-known for films probing the inner lives of young women. Did chronicling Marc's life feel unusual for this reason? Coppola: I didn't think about that. It's always scary to make something — you're figuring it out as you go. I just wanted to show a sincere depiction of Marc — I wanted it to feel personal, never intrusive or prying, but to share things that I know about Marc. San Diego FC spoils Son Heung-min's LAFC home debut with a 2-1 victoryNew Foto - San Diego FC spoils Son Heung-min's LAFC home debut with a 2-1 victory

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hirving Lozano and Anders Dreyer scored, and San Diego FC spoiled the home debut of Los Angeles FC forward Son Heung-min with a 2-1 victory Sunday night. After Dreyer got the tiebreaking goal in the 66th minute, Western Conference-leading San Diego held on against a barrage of LAFC chances to extend its unbeaten streak to six matches in MLS play. Denis Bouanga scored in the first half for LAFC, but the French star and Son both failed to convert golden scoring chances in the final minutes of expansion San Diego's first trip 120 miles north to BMO Stadium. CJ Dos Santos made three saves for the visitors, including a diving stop on Son in second-half injury time. Son was given a hero's welcome in his first match in Los Angeles, taking the field nearly four weeks afterLAFC announced the landmark signingof the South Korean star following his decade at Tottenham. Son played his first three matches on the road for LAFC, scoring a goal and immediately energizing the offense while his new club went unbeaten. The sellout crowd serenaded Son from the moment he stepped on the field for warmups in Los Angeles, which has the world's largest Korean population outside Korea. With thousands of fans wearing his jerseys for club and country, Son repeatedly waved to those cheering him on, and he exhorted the crowd into a frenzy right before kickoff. Bouanga put LAFC ahead in the 15th minute with a beautiful chip volley into San Diego's net off an excellent pass from teenager David Martínez. Bouanga's goal was his 15th of the season, all in his last 19 matches. But Lozano answered in the 33rd minute with a strike from the middle of the box for his ninth MLS goal. The Mexican national team star celebrated by taunting the famously raucous North End supporters' section. Dreyer put San Diego ahead with a individual effort by the Danish star, slipping behind LAFC's back line to collect Jeppe Tverskov's pass and juking two defenders before firing a left-footed shot for his 14th goal. LAFC controlled play for long stretches, but couldn't even it. Son hit a screamer toward the far top corner in the 45th minute, but Dos Santos made a superb leaping save. Hugo Lloris' long pass put Son in a one-on-one break in the 74th minute, but he couldn't get a shot off. Son then hit the post in the 78th minute with a shot from the top of the box. Bouanga got alone on the keeper in the 82nd minute, but waited too long to take a shot. Son's hard shot in the 92nd minute was saved by a diving Dos Santos. ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/soccer

Jessica Pegula, Barbora Krejcikova advance to U.S. Open quarterfinalsNew Foto - Jessica Pegula, Barbora Krejcikova advance to U.S. Open quarterfinals

Fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula is making another deep run at the U.S. Open and she claimed her spot in the quarterfinals Sunday with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over fellow American Ann Li in New York. Pegula converted 6 of 9 break points and needed just 54 minutes to subdue Li, who committed 19 unforced errors while playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium for the first time. Pegula next will face two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. Krejcikova staved off eight match points while rallying to a 1-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3 victory over upstart Taylor Townsend. Krejcikova held a 43-37 edge in winners while needing three hours and four minutes to finish off Townsend, who was vying to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event for the first time. Townsend dominated the first set and had a chance to close the deal in straight sets. She was leading 6-3 in a second-set tiebreaker before letting three straight match points get away. The two women traded big hits and missed shots throughout the 25-minute tiebreaker before Krejcikova finished off the 98-minute set with a slam. Seven of Townsend's squandered match points came in the second-set tiebreaker. Krejcikova broke Townsend's service to make it 4-2 and 5-3 in the third set before finishing off a scintillating victory that disappointed the pro-American crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium. "I'm totally enjoying this crowd. Even though it's not for me, it's fine," Krejcikova said in her on-court interview. "I love the atmosphere. I love when they're cheering. They're making the match huge. It's for the Americans. It's not for me. "I wish we had a tournament in Czech Republic and there were a lot of fans rooting for me. Maybe in a different life. Not now. I'm just enjoying. I'm having fun on court. I'm so happy I can be here. It's a huge privilege that I can play in front of such a nice crowd on Armstrong." Krejcikova's impressive showing snuffed out the dreams of the 29-year-old Townsend, a No. 1 doubles player who is enjoying the top singles run of her career. "It just stings because I literally gave everything," Townsend said. "She came up with some really, really great tennis in moments where she was down, and I thought I had it." Townsend lost in the first round of the other three majors this year before winning her first three matches at the Billie Jean King Center. She swept No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia on Friday, two days after beating No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in straight sets and being on the receiving end of some disparaging comments about her lack of sportsmanship. Pegula, a 2024 finalist, is more used to being on the big stage in New York. "I've obviously kind of earned that right over the years," the 31-year-old Pegula said of playing in Ashe. "When I was younger, I never hit on Ashe, I never played on Ashe. I was always on another court, Court 17 or maybe Grandstand if I was lucky. That's definitely changed. "Specifically here being an American, I have played a lot there now. Maybe against someone that hasn't gotten a lot of reps on that court, I think it is a little bit like a home-court advantage." This marks the third time Pegula has advanced to at least the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. She lost to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in last season's title match and also reached the quarters in 2022. Pegula has won just one of three matchups against Krejcikova. Pegula's victory came in the 2023 Australian Open round of 16. On Sunday, Pegula outclassed the 25-year-old Li and was highly effective at the net by winning 12 of 15 points. "It's a part of my game I can use as a weapon," Pegula said. "We've definitely worked on that a lot. They're really happy when I can finish a point with an overhead or a volley at the net." Pegula won the first three games of the match while sailing through the first set. It was more of the same in the second as she won four of the first five games before finishing off the match. Later Sunday, top seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus cruised past Spain's Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-4, posting more winners (26-9) and never having to save a break point. She advanced to the quarterfinals without dropping a set and will remain the top-ranked player after the tournament. The Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova knocked off ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Russia 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in one hour, 51 minutes. Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon winner, had the edge in aces (13-5) and won 5 of 7 break-point opportunities, to 3 of 6 for Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion who had more winners (40-29) and unforced errors (38-15). --Field Level Media
