We have our first significant deal a week beforeMajor League Baseball's July 31trade deadline, with theArizona Diamondbackssending first basemanJosh Naylorto theSeattle Mariners, the teams announced Thursday night. The Diamondbacks are receiving rookie leftyBrandyn Garciaand pitching prospect Ashton Izzi in the deal. Naylor is slashing .292/.360/.447 this season, with 11 home runs, 59 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. The Diamondbacks had acquired Naylor in an offseason trade with the Guardians, with the slugger coming off a 31-homer, 108-RBI campaign in Cleveland. Naylor, 28, is a free agent at the end of the season, making him a rental for Seattle. Here's a breakdown of the deal: The Mariners were in desperate need of a corner bat and Naylor should immediately become the starting first baseman, pushing Luke Raley back to the outfield. Seattle's first basemen have combined to hit just .233 this season and Naylor slots nicely into the lineup, giving some legitimate protection to Julio Rodriguez,Cal Raleighand Randy Arozarena. Organizers say that cattle near the Col des Saisies have experienced an outbreak of contagious nodular dermatitis, resulting in the culling of livestock and restricting access to the area. "In light of the distress experienced by the affected farmers and in order to preserve the smooth running of the race, it has been decided, in agreement with the relevant authorities, to modify the route," organizers ASOsaid in a statement. As a result, Friday's Stage 19 has been shorted from 129.9km (80.7 miles) to 95km (59 miles). The ceremonial start of the stage will start as usual near the town of Albertville before riders journey to a different start point to rejoin the route at the 52.4km (32.5 miles) mark on the original schedule before Beaufort. As a result, the competitors will avoid the affected area and the climb in Col des Saisies. The race will start an hour later, instead beginning at 2:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. ET). The stage will finish as planned in La Plagne and is the second to last day of competition before the historic race finishes in Paris on Sunday. Stage 19 had been seen as one of the toughest stages on the tour, with competitors having to climb a grueling 4,550 meters (about 14,930 feet) on the original course through the Alps. Florida basketball player Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-9 center who played for the Under-19 Canadian national team this summer, recently worked out for the Gators' football team. Rioux donned an orange helmet and took snaps on special teams, with Florida assistant coaches hoping his massive wingspan might be a difference maker when it comes to blocking field goals and extra points. "I like the idea," Gators basketball coach Todd Golden said during a booster event Thursday evening. "I give them credit for trying it." There was one issue: The 305-pound Rioux has an 11-inch vertical, so even with his extra-long reach, he was unable to block any kicks during the workout. "They were a little disappointed," Golden said. No worries. Rioux can simply stick to his full-time gig with the hoops team. After redshirting as a true freshman last season, he's expected to get on the court in limited capacity this fall. He's unlikely to play much considering the defending national champions return their entire frontcourt, but he should at least get on the court in garbage time. Golden already has considered using him to guard inbound passes, something Rioux did to perfection just before halftime against the United States in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland earlier this month. Rioux forced an errant pass that led to a turnover and a 3-pointer just before halftime. Rioux's unusual heightlanded him in the Guinness World Recordsa few years ago and he has become a walking viral video at Florida.
