We've now seen every team play this preseason. Or, at least there were players in all 32 team uniforms on an NFL field. As we know, some teams won't play starters in the preseason. In the first week of the preseason, half of the teams did not play their starting quarterback or many starters overall. Some starters played very little, like Patrick Mahomes who threw just one pass. At least it was for a touchdown. [Subscribe to Yahoo Fantasy Plus and get premium draft tools and player projections] So we don't have interesting developments on every team. But there were some important news items from the first week of the preseason: Sanders hasn't played a real NFL game and he might be the most divisive player in the league already. He moves the needle both ways, but those tuning in to see him fail in his preseason debut didn't have much to work with. There wasn't much negative about it. Sanders was pretty good in his surprise start, and it was even more impressive consideringit was a difficult situation. Sanders, who started due to injuries to Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel and also Joe Flacco being held out, did everything expected of him. He was safe early with short throws but got warmer as the game went on. He was comfortable and confident, and both touchdown passes were excellent in different ways. All in all, it was a successful debut. But with Sanders being the most discussed rookie fifth-round pick ever, the reactions weren't going to be measured. Sanders still is very unlikely to be QB1 before the season starts, and a half of football doesn't prove much for the long term either. But it was a promising beginning and it was a good step in a competition that does matter, and that's with Gabriel for the top rookie on the depth chart entering the season. The issue with Richardson in the NFL has rarely been physical. He is still incredibly inexperienced, and that was amplified in his first preseason action this year because his mistake ended up getting him injured. Richardson got blasted on an outside rush by Ravens linebacker David Ojabo, and plenty offormer quarterbacksandfilm analystsquickly determined that it was an error by Richardson. He had to identify that the Ravens would have a free rusher to his right and hit the outlet, which was the running back. He also had a wide open receiver on a curl route to the right side. But he looked left, never saw Ojabo coming and took a sack that also dislocated his right pinkie finger. The injury doesn't sound like it will be a long-term issue, but Colts head coach Shane Steichen will take note that Richardson couldn't identify where to go with the ball on that play before it turned into a negative. It's just one play, but it will have to be in the back of the staff's mind when it decides if Richardson or Daniel Jones wins the job. TheEagles gained 432 yards on the Bengalswithout playing any starters, and Philadelphia backup quarterback Tanner McKee looked like an All-Pro. A lot of the snaps were taken by the Bengals' backups, but the starters did play some. And they did not play well. Cincinnati's issue isn't a mystery: Its offense is great and its defense isn't. The Eagles' backups scored a touchdown on the Bengals' starters, then they got a field goal against a defensive lineup that included many starters. The preseason doesn't matter too much, but the Bengals' defense starting the preseason slowly (without last season's NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson, who is holding in) isn't the best news. Brian Daboll seemed to like what Dart did in his first preseason snaps. Dart completed 12 of 19 passes for 154 yards anda very nice touchdown throw. "Efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket," Daboll said after the game "Some stuff we can work on, but he's doing good. "Look, there's things he can be better at, but we missed some opportunities on third down, some drops that would have even been better for him and for us. But he's a confident young player. He's improved since he's been here. Still have a long way to go, but I enjoy working with him. I like his demeanor on the sideline. He sees the game well." Often coaches want to tone down praise for first-round quarterbacks, especially those who might begin the season on the bench. No reason to fuel a controversy that will be there regardless. Daboll saying many good things about Dart is interesting. Dart did play well and if that continues this month, it will be harder to keep him out of the starting lineup early in the season. There's still time for Dart to at least make a strong argument to get the start in Week 1, too. JAXSON DART FIRST TD PASS IN THE NFL.Lil'Jordan Humphrey on the other end!Watch on@NFLNetworkStream on@NFLPluspic.twitter.com/afUQ8Ijt59 — NFL (@NFL)August 9, 2025 It's just one play, and a preseason play at that, but a story can be told from rookie Tetairoa McMillan's 30-yard grab from Bryce Young in the Carolina Panthers' opener. McMillan wasn't open, it's just that Young knew McMillan would be open for him and trusted him enough to drop a deep pass in the bucket. And McMillan, the eighth pick of the draft, made a great adjustment with the ball in the air and a very nice over-the-shoulder catch. Bryce Young goes up top to Tetairoa McMillan for the big gain!CLEvsCAR on@NFLNetworkStream on@NFLPluspic.twitter.com/R6FwKTnAjm — NFL (@NFL)August 8, 2025 Overreacting to one play is a bad idea. But that is a good preview for how that connection will click right away. Tyjae Spears and Rachaad White aren't starters, but they are expected to be high-usage backups this season. And both are already dealing with injuries. Spears, Tony Pollard's backup with the Tennessee Titans, left on a cart after having his ankle rolled up on a tackle. It was a high ankle sprain and Spears' preseason is likely done, via Turron Davenport of ESPN. Even if Spears comes back for Week 1, high ankle sprains can often limit a player for weeks after returning. White is behind Bucky Irving in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' running back depth chart, but he was going to play a lot. A groin injury could change that. While Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said White isday to day, we'll see when he returns. What this mostly means is Pollard and Irving might have to carry more of the load in September. The good news is Murray completed seven of his eight passes. The bad news was the other pass. Murray threw a poor interception that was easily picked off by Chiefs safety Jaden Hicks.Murray explainedthat he "just didn't get enough on it," and while it's not the end of the world to make a mistake in the preseason, it's not the way the Arizona Cardinals want this season to get going. Jaden Hicks with the@Chiefspick!Stream on@NFLPluspic.twitter.com/1KJRExiDak — NFL (@NFL)August 10, 2025 Murray's potential to be a top-tier quarterbackis being hyped again this offseason. And mostly he played well in his preseason action last week. But he can't be making mistakes like that interception anymore. Buffalo Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins is one of the best in the league. The Bills pay him more than $20 million per season. And Carter, the New York Giants' top-drafted rookie, looked really good in a few snaps against him. Carter, the third pick of the draft, had three pressures on three pass-rushing downs, according to Pro Football Focus. And the way he moved was eye-popping. Steelers' Cam Heyward is open to sitting out regular-season games in search of a raiseNew Foto - Steelers' Cam Heyward is open to sitting out regular-season games in search of a raise

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — Cam Heyward wants a raise. And the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle is open to sitting out regular-season games to get one. Heyward told reporters Monday that he approached the club about a reworked deal in February after being selected to the All-Pro team for the fourth time in his 14-year career. There has been no movement on that front nearly three weeks into training camp. "Honestly looking to be valued," Heyward said. "I know what I bring to this team and what I'm capable of on and off the field, so it's hard for me after the year I've had to really justify playing at the number I'm playing at." Now 36, Heyward is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and had been "holding in" during camp, participating in some individual workouts but skipping some fully-padded 11-on-11 snaps. He stood on the sideline in street clothes on Monday as the Steelers began the final workouts of their annual three-week visit to Saint Vincent College. Heyward said the team asked him to take a pay cut last summer. They ironed out a reworked deal instead that runs through 2026. He responded by bouncing back from an injury-marred 2023 to finish with eight sacks, 71 tackles and 11 passes defensed as the Steelers went 10-7 and reached the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. "When I look at the market and I look at what I've done, it's hard to really wrap my head around playing a number where I'm not even half of what the rest of the market is," Heyward said. "I can't say I'm not disappointed with where we're at. I think it's pretty simple of how it could be handled. ... I just wish I could just be out there not having to worry about this." Neither Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin nor defensive coordinator Teryl Austin are bothered by Heyward's position or his lack of participation at this time of year. "Cam's been doing this a long time," Tomlin said. "I don't work Cam a lot in these scenarios (during camp)." The Steelers do have a little bit of wiggle room under the salary cap, but have also doled out hefty contracts to star outside linebacker TJ Watt, wide receiver DK Metcalf and recently acquired defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Heyward, the 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year, has long stated he wants to be a "one helmet guy," meaning he would prefer to spend his entire career in Pittsburgh. While that's hardly in danger at this point, his aggressive stance has thrown a wrinkle into a relatively quiet camp. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/NFL

Texas is No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 for first time, edging Penn St, Ohio St; 10 SEC teams rankedNew Foto - Texas is No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 for first time, edging Penn St, Ohio St; 10 SEC teams ranked

For the first time, Texas will open a college football season ranked No. 1 inThe Associated Press Top 25. The Longhorns hardly have a mandate in the poll released Monday:They edged out Penn Stateby just five points in the closest preseason vote since 1998. Texas received 25 first-place votes and 1,552 points to give the Southeastern Conference the preseason No. 1 team for a record fifth straight year. The Nittany Lions got 23 first-place votes and 1,547 points for their highest preseason ranking since they were No. 1 to open the 1997 season. The Longhorns face a major test right away. Their Aug. 30 opener at defending champion and third-ranked Ohio State is a rematch of last season's College Football Playoff semifinal, a 28-14 Buckeyes win in the Cotton Bowl. The Buckeyes received 11 first-place votes fromthe panel of 65 media memberswho cover college football. No. 4 Clemson got four first-place votes and No. 5 Georgia got one. Notre Dame, Oregon (which got the final first-place vote), Alabama, LSU and Miami round out the top 10. The SEC leads all conferences with 10 teams in the preseason Top 25, most ever by a conference and one more than a year ago. The SEC has four teams in the top 10 for the second straight year. The Big Ten, which has won the last two national championships, has two of the top three teams in the poll for the third straight year and six in the Top 25 for the third year in a row. Four Big 12 teams are ranked, with defending conference champion Arizona State the highest at No. 11. The Atlantic Coast Conference has three, led by Clemson. Top-ranked Texas "Arch Mania" is at a fever pitch in Texas with Arch Manning now the undisputed starting quarterback. The Longhorns have been on an upward trajectory since they were 5-7 in 2021, Steve Sarkisian's first season. They have won 25 of their last 30 games and reached two straight CFP semifinals. Last year, they were ranked No. 1 four of five weeks from mid-September to mid-October, and they reached the SEC championship game in their first season in the conference. "But this is a new year, new faces, new team, and obviously expectations are high for our program," Sarkisian said at SEC media days. "I'm not naive to that. I don't put my head in the sand, and expectations are very high. But I also say we're the University of Texas, and the standard is the standard here, and that's competing for championships year in and year out." Twelve Texas players were taken in the NFL draft, including three-first-round picks, but elite recruiting and additions from the transfer portal should alleviate concerns about losses on the offensive line and at receiver. The defense brings back plenty of talent. Still, Texas received just 38.5% of the first-place votes (25 of 65), the smallest share for a No. 1 team in the preseason poll since Georgia got 33.9% (22 of 65) in 2008. The Longhorns have ended a season No. 1 in the AP poll three times (1963, 1969, 2005) but until now had never started a season higher than No. 2 (1962, 1965, 1970, 2005, 2009). Big Ten lurking The second-ranked Nittany Lions are not only six points from being No. 1, they are 75 points ahead of the Buckeyes in what might be considered a slight to the national champs. Penn State will have Drew Allar back under center for what many consider a light schedule ahead of a late September visit from Oregon before a Nov. 1 showdown at Ohio State. The Buckeyes, in the preseason top five for the ninth straight year and 12th of the last 13, will have a new look with only five starters back on offense and three on defense. "This team has its own identity," coach Ryan Day said. "It wants to have its own identity, but it also wants to be the first Ohio State team to win back-to-back national championships." The opener against Texas will give the Buckeyes a good measure of themselves. Julian Sayin or Lincoln Kienholz will be the third new starting quarterback in three years. Whoever gets the job will throw to one of the nation's top players in Jeremiah Smith. Day will also have another chance to figure out archrival and preseason No. 14 Michigan, which has beaten the Buckeyes four straight years. Poll nuggets — Texas will try to become the 12th team to start and finish No. 1 since the AP preseason poll debuted in 1950. The last team to do it was Alabama in 2017. — Notre Dame is in the preseason top 10 for the third time in four years. The Fighting Irish will have a new quarterback, CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey. The two played a combined eight snaps last season as Notre Dame went all the way to the CFP title game won by Ohio State. — With Boise State at No. 25, all 12 teams in the 2024 College Football Playoff are ranked in the preseason. The Mountain West's Broncos are the first team from a Group of Five conference to crack the preseason Top 25 since Tulane was No. 24 in 2023. — No. 16 SMU, which returns quarterback Kevin Jennings from its CFP team, is in the preseason Top 25 for the first time in 40 years. The 1985 team was No. 3 and finished 6-5 and unranked. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. Blue Jays reportedly promote No. 1 prospect Trey Yesavage to Triple-A, possibly eyeing major-league call-upNew Foto - Blue Jays reportedly promote No. 1 prospect Trey Yesavage to Triple-A, possibly eyeing major-league call-up

Major League Baseball's trade deadline passed 10 days ago, but theToronto Blue Jayscould still make an impact addition to their pitching staff, thanks to their minor-league system. The Blue Jays are promoting pitcher Trey Yesavage to Triple-A, which puts him in line for a call-up when the minor-league season ends or perhaps sooner, depending on his performance. Yesavage, 22, is ranked as Toronto's No. 1 minor-league prospectby MLB.comand No. 2by The Athletic. He was the team's 2024 first-round pick (No. 20 overall) out of East Carolina. Progressing from low Single-A through Double-A so far this season, the right-hander has a 3.01 ERA in 18 starts with 134 strikeouts over 80 2/3 innings (an average of 15 Ks per 9). [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Yesavage's workload could be a concern as he pitches through his first professional season. The most innings he's thrown were the 93 1/3 innings he pitched last year for East Carolina. However, the Blue Jays apparently had an innings limit in mind when keeping him out of game action for approximately three weeks around the All-Star break, according to The Athletic. Trey Yesavage continues to rack up the strikeouts!The@BlueJays' top-ranked pitching prospect fans nine hitters over five strong frames for the Double-A@FisherCats, boosting his K/9 to 15.0 -- the best mark in the Minors (min. 80 IP):pic.twitter.com/YRB812IG0L — MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline)August 9, 2025 Also, though Yesavage has started 18 games this season, he wouldn't necessarily fill that role with the Blue Jays. Toronto manager John Schneider could use him as an opener, pitching one or two innings to start a game or pitch him in relief. The team possibly tipped that off as a consideration when Yesavage came out of the bullpen to pitch five innings last week. The Blue Jays may not need Yesavage as a starting pitcher either, with a rotation stocked with Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Eric Lauer and Max Scherzer. Toronto also acquired 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians at the trade deadline, and he could be available late in the season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Additionally, Alek Manoah is working his way back from reconstructive surgery as another possible reinforcement. With a 4.28 ERA, Toronto's pitching staff ranks 23rd in MLB. The starters are 22nd with a 4.43 ERA and the bullpen's 4.06 ERA ranks 18th. So there is room for improvement. The Blue Jays' offense is largely responsible for their success, with 583 runs scored so far this season, giving them a +44 run differential (with 539 runs allowed). The Blue Jays go into Monday's MLB slate at 69-50, leading theBoston Red Soxbyfour games in the AL Eastand holding a 6.5-game lead over the third-placeNew York Yankees.
