Joe, 35, claimed that some journalists would threaten to write that the brothers, who exploded in popularity as members of the Jonas Brothers, were "in a cult" if they didn't discuss their stance on the topics. The claim prompted a shocked Badgley, 38, to point out the optics of "asking a 10-year-old about their sex life." Frazer Harrison/Getty While he noted that he was not 10 at the time, Nick, 32, said that the industry has come "far" in "just the conversation and dialogue." "I think it's really a good thing," he said, explaining, "Where it would be like so outside of the realm of possibilities or something someone would do to ask at that time a 14-year-old about their sex life." Joe then chimed in, claiming that the questions were allegedly coming up in "every interview," and Nick pointed out that it was a larger problem. "It wasn't just us. It was a whole class of young people coming up," he added. As for their purity rings, Joe noted that it was "something in the community of [their] church where that was what everybody else in our were doing around 10, 11 years old." He said that they all decided that they wanted to "wait for the right person." Noting that they were around the age of 15 or 16 at the time, he said that they often did not want to discuss the topic, but that the pressure was allegedly there. Five former members of the 2018 Canadian world junior hockey team were found not guilty of sexual assault on Thursday, July 24, after a trial in London, Ontario, with a judge saying she didn't find the complainant's evidence "credible or reliable." "I cannot rely upon the evidence of (the accuser) and then considering the evidence in this trial as a whole, I conclude that the Crown cannot meet its onus on any of the counts before me," Justice Maria Carroccia said,per the Athletic. Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon DubĂ©, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton werecharged with sexual assault. McLeod faced a second charge of being a party to the offense, and he was also found not guilty of that charge. All had pleaded not guilty. Hart was the only defendant who testified. Carroccia rendered the ruling on Thursday, spelling out her reasoning.Juries had been dismissedon two occasions, once after an early mistrial was declared in the eight-week trial, and it was decided that the judge would rule on the case. The players were in London in June 2018 for a Hockey Canada gala honoring the gold medal-winning world junior championship team. The tournament is for under-20 players. Police say the alleged assaults took place in a hotel room after the defendants had met the woman, then 20, at a downtown bar. According to Canadian network TSN, the woman testified that she had consensual sex with McLeod and after she went to the bathroom, she saw him texting. He left the room and soon returned with two others, she said. Others also later came into the room. "I shut down and let my body do what it needed to do to keep me safe," she told the court, per the network. "It felt like the safe thing to do was give them what they were wanting." But the judge said, "In this case, I have found actual consent not vitiated by fear," The Athletic reported. Carroccia addressed consent videos that McLeod recorded with the woman. The judge said the woman "did not display any signs of intoxication" in the videos and had "no difficulty speaking,"per CBC. Carroccia said she believed the woman exaggerated her level of intoxication. CBC also said the judge noted the woman talked in court about telling "her truth," not "the truth." Prosecutors have 30 days to file an appeal based on legal flaws in the judge's ruling. "We will carefully review Justice Carroccia's decision and as this case is still within the appeal period, we have no further comment to make about the decision at this time," prosecutor Meaghan Cunningham told reporters. The London police department's initial investigation closed in February 2019 without any charges. It was reopened in July 2022, two months after TSN reported that May that Hockey Canada paid an undisclosed settlement to a woman who alleged in a $3.55 million lawsuit that she was sexually assaulted by eight players in a hotel room. The players were charged in February 2024. Detective Sgt. Katherine Dann of the police department's Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section said at the time that additional witnesses were spoken to and additional evidence was collected, starting in 2022. "I can confirm that some of this evidence was not available when the investigation concluded in 2019," she said in a news conference. "This is one investigation, not two. The evidence that was collected in 2018 and 2019 was used in combination with newly gathered evidence to form reasonable and probable grounds to charge these five individuals with sexual assault." The NHL conducted its own investigation but said it would not reveal its findings until after the legal case was completed. Commissioner Gary Bettman hadcalled the allegations "abhorrent." All but Formenton were with NHL teams at the time they were charged and took leaves of absences. Their teamscut them loosein June 2024 by not giving them qualifying offers, making them free agents. McLeod, now 27, played for theNew Jersey Devils, Hart, 26, for thePhiladelphia Flyers, DubĂ©, 27, for theCalgary Flamesand Foote, 26, played for three NHL teams, mostly recently the Devils. Chuck Mangione, the Grammy-winning flugelhorn and trumpet player and prolific jazz musician known for songs including "Feels So Good" and "Children of Sanchez," has died. Mangione died in his sleep Tuesday in his home in Rochester, N.Y., his manager Peter S. Matorin confirmed to The Times on Thursday. He was 84. The New York native, over the course of his career which began in the 1960s, earned a reputation as a stylish, lyrically smart trumpeter and played alongside jazz giants Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Sam Jones, Ron Carter and Kai Winding. He also collected 14 Grammy nominations, notably winning two prizes: one for his smooth "Bellavia" in 1977 and another a year later for the titular anthem he composed for the 1978 drama "The Children of Sanchez." His emphasis on melodic music — frowned upon by some hard-line jazz fans — was best heard in his chart-topping hit "Feels So Good," the title track of his 1977 album. The single became synonymous with Mangione and helped propel him into the mainstream. Notably, Mangione and his megahit were a running gag on the popular animated series "King of the Hill," in which he lent his voice to several episodes. "Feels So Good" was also referenced in "Friends," "The Big Bang Theory" and Marvel's "Doctor Strange" film in 2016. Though parts of the jazz community dismissed Mangione's work as lightweight and too pop, the composer saw divisive reaction to his music as a rite of passage. "I've read all the reviews, from the ones that say you're the greatest thing since sliced bread to the others who say they left at intermission," he toldThe Times in 1988. "This kind of thing happened to Cannonball Adderley, who incidentally produced my first album in 1960; it happened to Herbie Hancock and a lot of other people." "I don't respond to pressure from record companies or critics; my reviewers are the audiences, and besides, my only severe critic is me," he added at the time. It was Gillespie, Mangionerecalled in 1994, who recommended that the "Give It All You Got" musician join the Jazz Messengers. While touring with Blakey, Mangione recorded his first set of albums including 1966's "Buttercorn Lady." In the late '60s, Mangione formed his own quartet, featuring his childhood friend Gerry Niewood. Fostering his new, softer sound, Mangione released the album "Land of Make Believe" in 1973. The album and title track, featuring the vocals of Esther Satterfield, both earned Grammy nominations. Mangione, who moved from A&M Records to CBS Records in 1982, had a steady output of music through 1988. He also received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, earned recognition from the Smithsonian National Museum and was inducted in 2012 to his hometown's Music Hall of Fame. "Chuck's love affair with music has been characterized by his boundless energy, unabashed enthusiasm, and pure joy that radiated from the stage," his family said in a statement shared with The Times on Thursday.
