Game 2 of the New York Liberty vs. Atlanta Dream series ended in controversy. The Liberty fell to the Dream, 101-98, in overtime. New York had a chance to tie things up late, but failed to call a timeout to advance the ball, ultimately coming up short.
ESPN announcer Ryan Ruocco was shocked by how the Liberty handled the end-of-game sequence.
But following the game, Liberty star Breanna Stewart says that she was told by the referees that they didn't have any timeouts remaining.
"This is not blaming the refs, but when I ask both refs if we have a reset timeout at the end, and they tell us 'no,' and then we leave the game with a reset timeout, it's pretty frustrating. Yeah, I kind of got a good look at the end, but would just love to have some clarity on that situation."
"[Breanna] Stewart was standing behind referee Fahey when he confirmed with his partner between Reese's penalty FTs that the Liberty did indeed have a reset TO remaining… There was no direct communication with the officials or the team."
Hill believes that someone must be lying.
"I just asked a question. And now according to the pool report, the refs are saying they didn't communicate with anyone from the Liberty directly. So somebody lying," she said in response to questioning WNBA fans.
Game 3 will tip off at 7:30 p.m. E.T. on Friday night. The Liberty need to win on Friday evening to extend their season. New York will have to win three straight games to top the Dream and advance to the WNBA Finals.
Angel Reese, meanwhile, is just one win away from a Finals berth.
