NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty; NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty There was no better way forDavid Lettermanto tell the NBC execs they weren't the boss of him: by deploying therealBoss! On June 25, 1993, Letterman left NBC with a spring in his step, moving from 30 Rockefeller Center to the Ed Sullivan Theater and a new gig at CBS. He also made sure his last show at the old shop was an absolute barn burner — featuring some greatest hits clips (including the time he tried, and failed,to bring a fruit basket to his new corporate chieftains), a particularly hilarious visit fromTom Hanks, andBruce Springsteentearing it up with one of his best TV appearances and a fiery version of his hit "Glory Days." Letterman's departure fromLate Night With David Letterman, withJay Lenotaking over theTonight Showgig fromJohnny Carsonthat the Indiana-bred funnyman thought was rightfully his, was a major showbiz story, leading to a well-publicized bidding war for Letterman's talents and lawyers declaring that some of his gags were the "intellectual property" of NBC. (Indeed, the legal term "intellectual property" was not part of the popular vernacular the way it is now, and we have the Letterman-NBC feud to blame.) This whole song-and-dance was even made into an HBO film calledThe Late Shiftdirected by Betty Thomas. NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty In introducing Springsteen, Letterman said that in the 11 and a half years the show had been on, the New Jersey rocker was the only guest he wanted to have on but never did. With a "better late than never," he welcomed the Boss. Wearing a flannel shirt and jeans, he joined the World's Most Dangerous Band,Paul Shaffer's group that would soon change its name to the CBS Orchestra. Joining Springsteen were, on drums, Anton Fig; on guitar, Sig McGinnis; on keys, Shaffer; sitting in on sax and tambourine for the night,David Sanborn; and for reasons that remain elusive to our cursory internet research, Francisco Centeno on bass, andnotWill Lee. (Weirdly enough, other than Shaffer, Lee was the musician with the longest tenure in the band — but he wasn't there that night!) They played the appropriate tune for a send off — "Glory Days" — and if you've never seen the clip, luckilyit lives forever on YouTubethanks to some people who have uploaded it, in soft violation of NBC's intellectual property rights. Sign up forEntertainment Weekly's free daily newsletterto get breaking TV news, exclusive first looks, recaps, reviews, interviews with your favorite stars, and more. "Glory Days," a track on Springsteen's 1984 albumBorn in the U.S.A., was already a well-loved classic in 1993. When released as a single in 1985, it reached No. 5 onBillboard's Hot 100 chart, thanks in no small part to the energetic video, which was directed by the acclaimed filmmakerJohn Sayles. The bar sequences in the video were shot at the Hoboken, N.J., club Maxwell's, a legendary establishment that opened in 1978 and lasted until 2018. (It was the home base for two very important indie rock groups, The Feelies andYo La Tengo.) But as cool as that video was, it wasn't as cool as Springsteen jumping up on top of Shaffer's keyboard rig — leading Letterman to later joke, "If I had known that, I'd've gotten on the piano years ago!" NBC "Glory Days" is a 4-minute and 14-second song on the album, but theLate Nightperformance was about six minutes. This reporter remembers the episode going a little over its time, a final "so long!" from the show to NBC. The Boss would make three more appearances on a Letterman stage. In April 1995, he and the E Street Band stopped by theLate Show With David Lettermanand played "Murder, Incorporated" and "Secret Garden," and then again in December of that year, he came with just his acoustic guitar to sing "Youngstown." In 2002, Springsteen and the E Street Band performed "The Rising" and "Lonesome Day" — and for the first time he sat on Letterman's couch to trade some zings. Click below to hear a fine retort when Letterman asks Springsteen if he ever sings along to his own songs in the car. Read the original article onEntertainment Weekly

Which Duke players had the best NBA careers? Ranking Cooper Flagg's competitionNew Foto - Which Duke players had the best NBA careers? Ranking Cooper Flagg's competition

It's going to be a big night forDuke basketballatthe 2025 NBA Draft. Cooper Flagg is expected to become the sixth No. 1 pick in school history and third since 2019. Teammates Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach, meanwhile, are also projected to be top-10 selectionsin the draft beginning Wednesday, June 25 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. MultipleDukeplayers will be selected in the first round for the seventh time in eight years, and for the third time since 2018 the Blue Devils could have three players chosen in the top 10. There are 102 NBA players all-time who went to Duke, according to Pro Basketball Reference, including 23 active players this past season. But even though the Blue Devils have a storied college basketball history, and enjoyed unprecedented success (and five national championships) under former coach Mike Krzyzewski, ex-players' success in the pros has often been unpredictable. Flagg's status as the top prospect in this year's draft class comes with the promise that he can soon join the conversation about the best Duke product to play in the NBA. Where he ranks will depend on whether he can fulfill expectations that envision Flagg as one of the prominent players in the league right away. Only a select few Duke players have been able to do so as planned upon reaching the pros. With that in mind,USA TODAY Sportstook a stab at subjectively ranking the best Duke players to play in the NBA based on their accomplishments, statistics and longevity: 2025 NBA DRAFT:Golden era of second-generation players is here. But why? Note: Accomplishments include NBA championships, NBA All-Star Game appearances, All-NBA status and NBA awards. NBA draft: No. 1 overall pick in 1999 NBA seasons: 17 (1999-2016) Accomplishments: 2-time All-Star, 1-time All-NBA, NBA Rookie of the Year Background: Brand has more minutes, blocks and rebounds in the NBA than any Duke player. NBA draft: Second round, No. 35 overall pick in 2002 NBA seasons: 13 (2002-2015) Accomplishments: 2-time All-Star, 1-time All-NBA Background: Boozer averaged more rebounds per game in the NBA (9.5) than all but one Duke product all-time and averaged a double-double in five different seasons. Nicole Curtis Shares Why You Won't See Her Sons on the New Season of "Rehab Addict" (Exclusive)

HGTV Nicole Curtis' two sons, Ethan and Harper, won't appear on the new season of HGTV'sRehab Addict Curtis tells PEOPLE she wants to give her children "privacy" Ethan appeared on the show when he was younger, but Curtis jokes his friends "still make fun of him" Nicole Curtishas shared her motherhood journey withRehab Addictfans — but hertwo sonswon't be showing up on the series' latest season. "I learned my lesson," the HGTV star, 48, tells PEOPLE of involving her kids in her HGTV show. "I think there's one gift we can give our children, and I give them privacy. They're out in public with me a lot, and I shield them." Curtis welcomed Ethan in 1997 with her ex Steven Cimini, and Harper in 2015 with ex Shane Maguire. Ethan appeared on the show when he was younger, but Curtis says he isn't seeking more screen time on the home renovation series. "My son, when we first started the TV show years ago, we didn't have all the social media presence," she recalls. "He was in sixth grade, he thought it was cool, and his buddies thought it was cool to be on TV. And they still make fun of him because they're like, 'Oh my gosh, we can see you as a young boy, you had braces' and all this. But I won't do that again. My boys are my most precious, precious things in the entire world to me." Nicole Curtis/Instagram She adds that Ethan, now 27, is married "to a lovely woman." "You'll see I refer to them a lot," she admits. "I talk about my children a lot. I'm that mom. I mention my children every breath I have." "You'll see little hints of them," she adds of the ninth season, which premiered Tuesday, June 24. "But that's something cool for me to have, and I think it's a gift to my children that if they want to be on TV, they could be on TV, but not on this one." Nicole Curtis/Instagram Nicole Curtis/Instagram In the new episodes, which are airing after a three-year hiatus from TV for Curtis, she restores both a poorly flipped 1890s Wyoming home and a troubled Detroit property that had been invaded by squatters. Her extended break from filmingcame after a major personal "setback,"the exact nature of which she's keeping private for now. "I had a setback in my life that just rocked me to the core, and it was one of those moments where I thought, how do I get through this one?" Curtis tells PEOPLE. "I prayed on it and it was just devastating for me. I had to make a decision right there and then like, 'Okay, we're going to let this affect us for a very long time, or we're going to pick it up and go.'" Buying the Wyoming house on a whim was part of what pulled her out of that dark moment, she says. Curtis calls this latest installment of the show "an evolved version," "I'm no longer this little poor mommy in Minneapolis driving around with this pickup truck with two dogs and a kid," she says. "But I'm still me, I'm still Nicole Curtis from Detroit, and I want you to save that building and we're going to do it." Read the original article onPeople

Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. ejected for second time this season after arguing strike callNew Foto - Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. ejected for second time this season after arguing strike call

CINCINNATI (AP) — Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was ejected for the second time this season for arguing a called strike. Chisholm was ejected before the bottom of the ninth inning of Tuesday night's5-4, 11-inning loss to the Cincinnati Redsby plate umpire Mark Wegner after a pitch from Lyon Richardson that Chisholm thought was low in the zone on a 2-0 count was called a strike in the top half. Chisholm struck out and continued arguing after leaving the batter's box. Yankees captain Aaron Judge walked out together as Chisholm went to third base for the bottom of the ninth. Chisholm was still talking — he said it was to himself. Wegner held a hand up, as if to say enough, then ejected Chisholm. "I looked at him and I said, 'Why are you looking at me?' And that's when I got tossed," Chisholm said. "I didn't get tossed for saying nothing crazy. I didn't get tossed saying, 'Oh, that was a bad pitch,' I got tossed for saying, 'Why are you looking at me?' I don't think that's a good reason to toss anybody." Chisholm was ejected from the a6-3 victory over Tampa Bayon April 17 for arguing a called third strike by John Bacon. The following day,Chisholm was suspended for one game and fined by Major League Baseball, which cited his conduct and violation of MLB's social media policy when he posted in-game criticism online. Thesuspension was later dropped. Chisholm said he needed to do a better job of controlling his emotions. "That's why I'm upset because I wasn't talking to you (the umpire). I didn't even have nothing to say to you because I know if I had something to say you I was going to get tossed," he said. Manager Aaron Boone came out to try and held Chisholm back from Wegner. "Obviously Jazz didn't like the 2-0 call, some words at home played within the at-bat, and then Jazz went out and says he wasn't saying anything to Mark Wegner. And Mark was looking down at him and ends up running them. Not a great situation," Boone said. The ejection meant Oswald Peraza moved to third base and DJ LeMahieu came in to play second base. The Yankees have dropped the first two games of the series against the Reds and lost for the ninth time in 12 games. New York (45-34) has seen its lead in the AL East over Tampa Bay cut to one game. Nine-time All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving will decline his $43 million player option and instead plans to sign a three-year, $119 million contract to remain with the Dallas Mavericks, ESPN reported on Tuesday night. Irving, who will have a player option for the 2027-28 season, per the report, is recovering from a torn ACL which ended his season in March. He spoke with ESPN on Tuesday night and said that there is a long-term commitment from himself and the Dallas organization and he wants to build a legacy with the Mavericks, believing the franchise can win a league championship. Irving, 33, could return from the left knee injury as soon as January, per the report. He averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 36.1 minutes in 50 games (all starts) last season. He averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 40.0 minutes in starting all 22 playoff games as the Mavs advanced to 2024 NBA Finals, where they lost to Boston Celtics in five games. For his career, Irving is averaging 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 34.5 minutes in 779 games (all starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2011-17), Celtics (2017-19), Brooklyn Nets (2019-23) and Mavericks. (2023-present). He won an NBA title with the Cavaliers in 2016. The Cavaliers selected Irving with the No. 1 pick of the 2011 NBA Draft after his freshman season at Duke. He was the NBA Rookie of the Year with Cleveland. Dallas has the No. 1 pick of the 2025 draft, which starts on Wednesday night, and is expected to pick All-America Cooper Flagg, a freshman out of Duke. The Mavericks, who could build around Irving, Flagg and 10-time All-Star big man Anthony Davis, 32, will need a point guard while Irving is sidelined. ESPN reported that Irving's three-year deal could allow Dallas the financial flexibility to open up a $5.7 million taxpayer midlevel exception. --Field Level Media

The R&B icons, who topped the charts with their 1998 duet "The Boy Is Mine,"stopped byCBS Morningson Tuesday ahead of their first joint tour to reflect on their decades-long feud and burying the hatchet through open communication. "They've been trying to get us to do a tour since '98," Brandy toldGayle Kingand company of her first-ever co-headlining tour with Monica, named after their hit duet and set to kick off in the fall. "It just finally felt like the right time." It also felt like the right time because the duo "created the communication and the relationship to do it," Monica added. "It's a musical marriage. When you start to go on a tour, especially of this caliber, we have to talk about everything." She then referenced theirrecord-breaking Verzuz battle in 2020, calling it the first time she and Brandy had seen each other in years amid the beef, when the topic turned to the feud. King asked. "It started as nothing and it really did turn into something," Monica clarified, alluding to external forces that led to the conflict. "The reason I was so insistent that we communicate directly is that you take all of the peanut gallery out of the conversation." Monica added, "If there's something to discuss, we discuss it among each other… and that just eliminates any confusion. There was a lot of confusion and conflict and there was a lot of people around" during those early days. Brandy quipped, "The song didn't help either. We were fighting over a boy." Monica also made note of how asinine it was for the industry to pit two teenagers against each other. "I was 18, she was 17 when we did the record," she said. "People forget that you're having this conversation about children, basically. You're inciting a riot amongst children! We were teenagers… We didn't really know each other." The feud between the young stars began following the release of "The Boy Is Mine," which also fed into the narrative of a rivalry considering the subject matter of fighting over a boy. The rumors reached a fever pitch after record producerDallas Austin claimed that he saw Monica punch Brandyin the face backstage at an awards show prior to a performance of their hit song. Brandy's brother, fellow artistRay J, has also said that the feud was "100% real,"citing a competitiveness from being pitted against each other. Regardless, they would collaborate again on the 2012 song "It All Belongs to Me," and their infamous Verzuz battle proved to be cordial, with the two addressing past tensions but largely praising each other, though there was some perceived awkwardness. The duo, who most recently reunited again forAriana Grande's 2024 remix of "The Boy Is Mine," confirmed on CBS that the drama is far behind them. "Now we can't stop talking," Brandy said of their friendship and forthcoming tour, which they hailed as a "celebration of music" as well as "celebration of womanhood." Alongside special guestsKelly Rowland, Muni Long, andAmerican IdolwinnerJamal Roberts, Brandy and Monica's 24-city arena tour kicks off Oct. 16 in Cincinnati and concludes Dec. 7 in Houston.
