Zachary Hitchcock Collection A bombshell new book,JFK: Public, Private, Secretby J. Randy Taraborrelli, comes out July 15 and PEOPLE has an exclusive first excerpt It reveals that JFK had an affair with a flight attendant named Joan Lundberg, resulting in her pregnancy Below, read what happened — and how Jackie reacted to her husband's affairs Joan Lundberg was "one of a kind," says her son Zachary Hitchcock. "She was unconventional and independent — a voluptuous beauty with a great smile." According to a bombshell new biography,JFK: Public, Private, Secretby J. Randy Taraborrelli, the young flight attendant met JFK in 1956 when he was a senator from Massachusetts — and married. It's a little-known chapter in the life of the 35th president and might have remained that way were it not for Lundberg's family, who shared her unpublished memoir and personal diaries with Taraborrelli. For more on JFK and Joan, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday, or subscribehere. The author tells her story in detail for the first time in his new book, a follow-up to his 2023 biography,Jackie: Public, Private Secret.Says Taraborrelli, "With this book, I wanted not to defend JFK but I wanted to explain him." "Joan was a big revelation for me," the author adds. "She acted as his therapist in many ways. Because she was outside of his Washington circle, he opened up to her — and began to reckon with his flaws." By weaving Lundberg's story and portions of her manuscript into his new book, he says, "You're left with a portrait of a very interesting woman." Learn more below, in an excerpt fromJFK: Public, Private, Secretshared exclusively with PEOPLE. St. Martin's Press On August 19, 1956, the senator from Massachusetts met Joan Lundberg, 23, standing in front of the jukebox at The Sip and Surf, a dive bar in Santa Monica, Calif. "What are you gonna play?" he asked her. "I was thinking Elvis Presley, but what would you like to hear?" she asked. He said he wanted to hear something "so I can concentrate on you." Corny, but not bad. Joan, a single mom of two, was then living with a man named Norm Bishop and working as a flight attendant for Frontier Airlines (and as a cocktail waitress on the side). When Jack asked where she lived, she told him it was in a "trailer court close by," not hesitating. "What the hell's a trailer court?" he asked. She laughed and answered, "You don't want to know." After about 15 minutes Jack, then 39, said goodbye and returned to his friends. Half an hour later, bar owner Pat Dorian called her to the phone. She picked it up. "How ah ya?" came back the voice with its broad Bostonian accent. It was Jack. He was leaving town tomorrow for Italy but would return in two weeks. On Aug. 24 Jack found out Jackie, then 27, had given birth to their stillborn daughter Arabella. Four days later he returned to Hammersmith Farm, her family's estate in Newport, R.I., where she was recuperating — and fed up. Robert Knudsen. White House Photographs. John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Boston She'd always felt something was missing in his nature, and now she knew what it was: empathy. When Jackie wept at the breakfast table and said, "How could I have been so stupid?" her mother, Janet, reached out and took her hand. "You're not stupid," she told her. "You just put your trust in the wrong person." In early September, Jack returned to L.A. and invited Joan to a dinner party at the home of his sister Pat and her husband, actor Peter Lawford. Joan later remembered feeling insecure and out of her element, though she certainly looked stylish in an outfit from Jax in Beverly Hills, a boutique favored by Marilyn Monroe. She would later write: "He lit up the room. People came over just to be near him, his energy magnetic. I thought, well of course, that's the politician in him. But I soon realized that, no, that's just who he is." At about midnight, Jack drove Joan up Pacific Coast Highway to a nondescript 1930s motor court called the Sunset Motel. They checked in as "Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson." The sex that night was "wild," claimed Joan. The next morning over breakfast, he unburdened himself. His fears, his insecurities. It was as if she was so removed from his circle, he could share anything. According to what Joan later recalled, Jack admitted that he and Jackie were the product of "an arranged marriage" and, as such marriages go, he said it was "fine. Not great, but okay." Jack said his family had turned against him for not being there for Jackie after Arabella's stillbirth. He admitted that "We Kennedys aren't the best at expressing emotion." Joan told him, "I'll bet that's the great excuse of your life." Joan asked him if he'd grown to love his wife. He hesitated. "I don't know that I love anything," was his answer. That can't be true, she said. After a moment, he added, "I love politics. I don't know how to love anything else." Jack Kennedy had no sooner walked into the foyer of Hammersmith Farm upon his return to Newport when Jackie hit him with a question: "Who's Trailer Park Joan?" As he collected his thoughts, she clarified things: "The divorcée! Your sister told me all about her!" He explained that Joan was someone he'd met in Los Angeles. Joan is vague in her unpublished memoir about how much Jack told Jackie, only that he told her pretty much everything. Within weeks his father, Joe Kennedy, got a call from a top New York attorney who'd been retained to represent Jackie in a divorce. Joe met Jackie for lunch in New York to talk about it. Joe told Jackie that if she agreed to stay in the marriage he could give her the freedom to do whatever she liked. He would offer her $100,000 upon the birth of her and Jack's first child. Jackie accepted the offer but had to find a way to cope with her husband's infidelity. The PEOPLE Appis now available in the Apple App Store! Many years later, Jackie told architect John Carl Warnecke, "He didn't have to lie to me about this Joan woman. I was already lying to myself." Warnecke recalled, "She told me things changed for her when Jack became involved with Joan but that it wasn't a subject she wanted to get into. It was very painful, that much I knew." By 1957 JFK was being talked about as a presidential contender. In private he continued his affair with Joan, flying her to meet him on different airlines and covering her expenses. "She told me, 'I never worry about trouble when I'm with Jack because I pass for his sister, Pat, all the time,' " said Joan's sister, Linda Lydon. Joan later recalled that she and Jack got along well, "aside from normal lovers' tiffs between two high-spirited people." They often discussed his political career, with him starting off sentences with, "When I'm president . . ." One night in May [1957] Jack and Joan were sharing a cigarette in bed when he suddenly asked her, "Tell me the truth, Joan. Do you think Jackie is screwing other guys?" He explained that Jackie was "so great," he couldn't imagine her not having someone else in her life. At the beginning of the year, he said, they'd started having sex now and again, but "there's too much left unspoken between us." Recently after having sex, she'd asked him, "What you do with me in bed, is that what she likes?" obviously meaning Joan. He could see the "damage in her eyes," he said, "and it killed me." Zachary Hitchcock Collection After Jackie gave birth to Caroline on Nov. 27, Joan noticed a change. She later wrote: "I think I was now very much in love, and I was so mad at myself because I knew better. I knew better!" While Jack and Joan would again share their bed in Minneapolis on April 25 and 26, 1958, things were definitely different. On June 25, according to her calendar, Joan called Jack. She was pregnant. Joan would recall that her news about the baby was "like a knife to Jack's heart." While it was a shock, Joan wrote that they shouldn't have been so surprised: "I didn't like wearing a diaphragm, and Jack wouldn't wear a rubber," she wrote. Jack couldn't help but wonder if Joan had purposely planned the pregnancy given that she'd seen his devotion to Jackie after Caroline's birth. He also wondered if he was really the father, and Joan assured him he was. When he asked her how she felt about the pregnancy, she said she loved the two children she was raising on her own and knew she'd also love any child she and Jack brought into the world. He didn't know how to respond. "I have no words," he said. "Find some," she told him. He took both her hands in his own. "I'm so very sorry, Joan," he told her. "I am, too," she said. Later that summer they had a tense phone call. Sounding edgy and not like himself, he told her he'd decided she couldn't have the baby. Joan tried to argue, but she didn't know how. Jack said that he'd mail her $400. He told her, "You'll know what to do, Joan. Please," he said, his tone desperate. "Being a politician is who I am," he told her. "Politics is all I know. If you take that away . . ." His voice trailed off. Before she could respond, he disconnected the line. A week later she got an envelope with no return address. It was empty. She told him the money had been stolen. He became positively unhinged. Joan later wrote: "My God! You had never heard anybody use expletives so much in the whole history of Washington." Jack was very clear; he didn't want Joan to have the baby. He wired more money that same day, and she took care of things a day after that. She was angry and disappointed, but also realistic. "From what she later told me, Mom realized the party was over," said Zachary Hitchcock in 2024. "She couldn't be on the sidelines. The presidency, Jackie, the abortion, there was no way mother could be marginalized in that way. She had way too much pride." It ended not in person but on the phone. When Jack called Joan to check on her, she told him, "I'm going to need to put some distance between us." He understood. "I owe you so much," he told her. "One thing I want to say to you, Kennedy," she told him. "You love Caroline, and I know that, but I'm somebody's daughter, too. Remember that the next time you treat a woman the way you've treated me." On Nov. 8, 1960, he became the 35th president. His relationship with Joan never came to light. But Jackie did install a spy, a woman she recommended for a job in the office of JFK's personal secretary Evelyn Lincoln, to keep her posted of suspicious calls. From all available evidence, Jackie never found out about the abortion, either. Many years later, she told a family member, "I was doing my best with the cards I'd been dealt. I loved Jack. I know he loved me. I had to ignore the rest of it. My marriage was like a deep black hole and I knew if I looked down, I'd fall in." Kennedy had a telling conversation with his friend Florida senator George Smathers in early 1962. "Do you worry Jackie will find out about the other women?" George asked. Jack became instantly frustrated. "There are no other women. I've never told any other woman I love her. There is only Jackie. Besides," he said, "we could all be blown up in an atomic war tomorrow. That's what worries me. Not this bullshit." After their son Patrick died on Aug. 9, 1963, two days after being born prematurely, Jackie decided to travel with her husband to Dallas that November. A couple of months earlier, at the celebration of their tenth wedding anniversary, Jackie and Jack gave each other gifts. She presented him with a new St. Christopher's medal because he'd placed his own in Patrick's coffin. In turn, he gave her a gold-and-emerald ring, which represented the fighting spirit of the Irish he'd seen in their son's fight for survival. He slipped it onto Jackie's finger next to her wedding band and asked her to marry him. There'd never been a real proposal, except for a few words in an airport when she returned from her trip to England in 1953. Jack was a different man. They planned a private ceremony to renew their vows for September 1964 at Hammersmith, marking their 11th wedding anniversary. Jackie planned to wear a pale blue or yellow dress. But it never came to pass. Joan [who had married Freemont Hitchcock in 1963] was devastated by the assassination. She wrote: When the truth struck home, I closed my bedroom curtains and shades, and I cried, screamed, and cursed alone for hours. Excerpted fromJFK: Public, Private, Secret, copyright © 2025 by J. Can Ohio State go back to back? The Buckeyes begin the season as the co-favorites to win the national title with Texas. Both Ohio State and the Longhorns are at +500 to win it all ahead of their Week 1 matchup in Columbus. So far, Georgia is the only team to win back-to-back titles in the College Football Playoff era. The Bulldogs took down Alabama at the end of the 2021 season to win the national title and then demolished TCU at the end of the 2022 season to win it all. Those two titles for the Bulldogs came in the four-team version of the CFP. Ohio State's title a season ago came in the first 12-team playoff as the Buckeyes had to win four games. Ohio State blew out Tennessee at home and Oregon in the Rose Bowl, then held off Texas in the Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame in the national championship game. Both the Buckeyes and Longhorns enter the season with new starting quarterbacks. We shouldn't have to introduce you to Texas' starter, asArch Manning is the summer Heisman favoriteahead of his first season as a full-time starter. In Columbus, former Alabama signee Julian Sayin is in line to take over for Will Howard. Sayin was the No. 2 pro style QB in the class of 2024 when he signed with the Crimson Tide and enrolled early. But he entered the transfer portal a month after he signed with Alabama following Nick Saban's retirement and ultimately went to Ohio State. Sayin is +1800 to win the Heisman and his teammate Jeremiah Smith is another one of the top favorites at +1000. Smith was simply dynamic as a true freshman in 2024 and was one of the best wide receivers in college football. They both will be getting plays from a new offensive coordinator in 2025 as well. With Chip Kelly now the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders, Brian Hartline will be Ohio State's new play caller. Kelly called plays in his only season in Columbus after Ryan Day relinquished play-calling duties. Former Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia is also Ohio State's new defensive coordinator after Jim Knowles went to Penn State. Knowles, a Pennsylvania native, is now the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football. Overall, the top five favorites to win the title all come from either the SEC or Big Ten. Georgia is the No. 3 favorite at +650 ahead of Penn State at +750 and Oregon at +800. Gunner Stockton is set to be Georgia's QB after taking over for Carson Beck in the SEC title game. The Nittany Lions return QB Drew Allar and a host of other key contributors as they look to make another postseason run. Penn State dominated SMU in the first round and beat Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl before losing to Notre Dame in the semifinals. Oregon won the Big Ten title in 2024 thanks to a regular season win over Ohio State and a Big Ten title game win over Penn State. The Ducks will have former UCLA QB Dante Moore as their starter with Dillon Gabriel off to the NFL. The potential loss of WR Evan Stewart for the entire season because of a knee injury could loom large. The first team outside the two powerhouse conferences on the board is Clemson at +1300. The Tigers could be the best value pick among all the favorites. QB Cade Klubnik broke out in 2024 and both the offense and defense return a ton of talent. Notre Dame is at +1400 to win it all and ahead of both Alabama and LSU. The Tide and Tigers both missed out on the playoff field in 2024 and have the best odds of any team that failed to make the postseason a year ago. Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sánchez are having a luxury wedding. The internet is enraged.New Foto - Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sánchez are having a luxury wedding. The internet is enraged.

Jeff BezosandLauren Sánchezare gearing up for what will likely prove one of the mostluxurious weddingsof all time − and the internet already hates everything about it. The couple, who went public with their relationship in 2019 and got engaged in 2023, will tie the knot inVenice, Italy, the citypreviously confirmed.ReutersandThe New York Timesreport the three-day wedding will likely occur between June 26 and 28. As the reported wedding day draws closer, the backlash online has only grown. "This is what oligarchy looks like," oneX userwrote. "I wonder how many kids could have been fed for the price of Jeff Bezos wedding?" wroteanother. The nuptials have drawn in-person protests, too: Activists from Greenpeace Italy and the UK group "Everyone hates Elon (Musk)" unfolded a giant banner in central St Mark's Square on June 23 with a picture of Bezos laughing and a sign that reads: "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax." The strong reactions to luxury weddings, like Bezos and Sánchez's, point to deeperfrustrationspeople have with their own economic situations, mental health experts explain. What health & wellness means for you:Sign up for USA TODAY's Keeping It Together newsletter "A lot of people are feeling like they're stuck and they are living week-to-week, and people are feeling like they're not sure how they can make a difference," psychotherapistStephanie Sarkispreviously told USA TODAY. "Those feelings can be directed toward a person, especially when people don't feel like they have a voice or their voice has been blocked." Though they've been tight-lipped about their nuptials, the billionaire Amazon founder, 61, and former television journalist, 55, are expected to spare no expense for their wedding. Regional governor Luca Zaia estimates the festivities to cost $23-$34 million. After the ceremony − for which the exact location is currently unknown − the newlyweds and their guests will head to a hall of the Arsenale, a renovated maritime area on the outer edge of Venice. The vast 14th-century complex in the eastern Castello district, known for hosting theVenice Biennale art fair, is surrounded by water and impossible to reach by land when connecting bridges are raised. "The organization (Bezos and guests) have categorically not booked large amounts of gondolas or excessive numbers of water taxis," the city of Venice said in aMarch statement. "It is their utmost priority to make sure the city functions as normal, for all, with no abnormal disruption to anyone." Everything we know so far:Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding Still, that hasn't deterred the couple's detractors, some of whom have taken to X to share how their lives are going by comparison. Asone userput it: "Some 100 private jets will fly to Venice for Jeff Bezos' wedding, and I recycle yogurt cup lids." Locals have also threatened peaceful blockades against the event the day of, saying Venice needs public services and housing, not VIPs and tourism. Erik Anderson, a licensed marriage and family therapist said there's multiple reasons why people have such a negative view of luxury weddings, the primary being that they serve as blunt reminders of how different life is for the mega-wealthy. Many young people today, he added, are grappling with economic uncertainty and the feeling they were born in a situation in which the odds were stacked against them. "One thing that's a major driver of people's resentment is the feeling that people are not going to be better off than their parents," Anderson previously told USA TODAY. "We kind of get into the psychology of comparison and how people measure themselves against other people in their community, including saying, 'Am I going to be better off than my parents or worse off than my parents?' " Luxury weddings strike a particular nerve, Anderson added, when they involve the rich renting out exclusive access to things. You also saw this last year with the lavish wedding of Bilt Rewards CEO Ankur Jain and former WWE wrestler Erika Hammond, who got married in a four-day spectacle in Egypt that included a private tour of the pyramids and a special event at the Grand Egyptian Museum, whichisn't yet fully open to the public. "I think it really created a symbolic representation of, 'We are taking and then no one else can have it, and it also makes us feel special for no one else to be able to have it,' " Anderson said of Jain and Hammond's wedding extravaganza at the pyramids. When this anger combines with the anonymity afforded by the internet, backlash is almost inevitable, Sarkis previously told USA TODAY. Most people in America face financial burdens which contribute to mental health problems, Anderson previously told USA TODAY. "Poverty itself can be a stressor," he said. "We essentially see that wellbeing correlates with income. So, basically, the larger the middle class, the more people there are who have a high level of wellbeing, and the smaller the middle class, the lower the wellbeing in the average population." More:Lance Bass, Robin Thicke, more went to this massive billionaire wedding. The internet was enraged. Sarkis said it's important to take stock of your feelings when you get angry over a luxury wedding and see what's really behind them. You might find you're mad at something much bigger than Bezos, Sánchez or any particular individual. "We can have a variety of feelings that come through that we don't necessarily take accountability for," she said. "And we really need to look at what is it that we're angry about, and is there anything we can do to change it?" MLB trade deadline 2025: Who's buying and selling? Top targets as rumors swirlNew Foto - MLB trade deadline 2025: Who's buying and selling? Top targets as rumors swirl

It's like watching a murder mystery and learning who the killer is with an hour left. Or sitting down for a gourmet dinner and being served the filet before your drink order. It's like riding in a stretch limousine in Beverly Hills with champagne and caviar and being dropped off for the evening at the Holiday Inn Express. It is this year'sMajor League Baseballtrading deadline. Thebiggest and most fascinating tradewas consummated 10 days ago when theBoston Red Soxsent Rafael Devers to theSan Francisco Giants, triggering a cascade of stories dissectingwho should be blamed for the fallout. There are five weeks remaining before this year's July 31 deadline, and there will not be a single trade that remotely comes close to baseball's version of the Luka Dončić deal. MLB POWER RANKINGS:Braves in for a big week Nobody will be traded with $100 million left on his contract, let alone the $254.5 million remaining in Devers' deal, or nearly the star power. Juan Soto won't be traded for the third time in three years. The Los Angeles Dodgers aren't giving Mookie Betts back to the Red Sox. Future Hall of Famers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are staying put this time. Once Vladimir Guerrero signed his14-year, $500 million contract extensionin April, it ended any intrigue that he could be the biggest trade chip. Instead, we could be in for a sleeper of a deadline, largely because there are only six teams – the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals, Athletics andPittsburgh Pirates– who will definitely be sellers with five weeks to go. And they have no star players who would send the baseball world into a frenzy. Please, forget about the fantasy of the Pirates even consideringtrading ace Paul Skenes, so don't even bother calling. Now, if you want starters Mitch Keller or Andrew Heaney, or closer David Bednar, or infielders Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ke'Bryan Hayes, or outfielders Bryan Reynolds and Tommy Pham, the Pirates will have an operator standing by to take your calls. 'MISUNDERSTOOD':Manny Machado makes no apologies on his path to Hall of Fame TheChicago Cubs, who have dominated the NL Central but have seen their lead getting a little too close for comfort, are one of the teams who would love to get their hands on Keller and Bednar. Every contender but seemingly the Seattle Mariners are seeking a starter, reliever or both. While there's so little certainty, phone calls have already begun taking place, which will become much more frequent after the July 13-14 Draft in Atlanta. Here's a look at the murky 2025 deadline: –Arizona Diamondbacks: They will be the epicenter of the deadline if they sell. They are only 2 ½ games out of a wild-card berth, but they have been decimated with injuries. All-Star outfielderCorbin Carrolland catcher Gabriel Moreno went on the injured list this week, while co-closers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez and starters Corbin Burnes and Jordan Montgomery all have gone recent Tommy John surgeries. The cruel reality is that they may have no choice but to sell, and if they sell, Arizona could be the epicenter of the trade deadline. Starters Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly would be two of the premier pitchers on the market, third baseman Eugenio Suárez and first baseman Josh Naylor would be two of the top available position players, and closer Shelby Miller should draw widespread interest. –Baltimore Orioles: They are finally showing signs of life, going 16-10 since dropping to a season-worst 18 games under .500 on May 24. If they don't continue this pace, they could be forced to be sell. And if they do, they'll have plenty of folks interested in starters Zach Eflin, Tomoyuki Sugano, Trevor Rogers and Charlie Morton as well as center fielder Cedric Mullins, 1B/OF Ryan O'Hearn, and relievers Felix Bautista and Seranthony Dominguez. – Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox may have made a solid trade for the future by sending Rafael Devers to the Giants, but they all butwaved the white flagon 2025. Even though they can augment the future by selling at the deadline, can they afford to completely alienate their fanbase? If they don't mind a modern-day Boston Tea Party with everyone ripping up their tickets, the Red Sox could set the trade deadline ablaze by dealing Alex Bregman before he opts out or trading outfielder Jarren Duran. Boston could part with closer Aroldis Chapman and starter Walker Buehler, who joined in the winter on a one-year deal. – St. Louis Cardinals: The Cardinals are a real life version of "Major League'' where the team is winning despite of the front office's attempts for them to fail. The Cardinals didn't do anything in the offseason, tried to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado, asked ace Sonny Gray to waive his no-clause trade, and planned on waiting until the All-Star break to trade closer Ryan Helsley and starter Erick Fedde. Well, here we are, and the Cardinals aren't going away, sitting just 3 ½ games out of first place in the NL Central and tied for a wild-card berth. If the Cardinals stay close, can they really deal Helsley and Arenado? Helsley would be one of the top relievers on the market, and Gray would be among the top starters if he waived his no-trade clause. – Los Angeles Angels: They can't possibly stay in the race, can they? Do they really believe they have a chance to be in the playoffs and will stand pat at the trade deadline? Well, you have to look only back to two years ago when they were in a similar position, sitting 5 ½ games back in the AL West, three games back in the wild-card race, and holding the most valuable trade chip in Shohei Ohtani. What happened? They kept Ohtani, picked up Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, and finished with a 73-89 record, and two months later lost Ohtani to the Dodgers in free agency. This time around, they've got future Hall of Fame closer Kenley Jansen, outfielder Taylor Ward, starter Tyler Anderson and reliever Reid Detmers, all who would draw strong interest if the Angels decided to surrender. – Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins: This was the finest pitcher in baseball in 2022, unanimously winning the Cy Young award. Now, after recovering from Tommy John surgery, he is slowly regaining his form. He is 2-1 with a 2.74 ERA in four starts this month, and the beauty of Alcantara is that he's still under contract through the 2027 season. The price tag will be high, and if no one is willing to meet it, the Marlins will simply hold onto him until this winter. – Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks:Gallen likely will depart in free agency after this season, which is why the Diamondbacks signed Corbin Burnes to a six-year, $210 million deal, knowing they would needed to replace him. While Gallen has struggled this year with a 5-8 record and 5.60 ERA, he's a big-game pitcher who thrives against top teams. Gallen, who's from the Philadelphia area, is is 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA this season, striking out 27 batters in 19 ⅔ innings in three starts against the Mets and Yankees this season. – Eugenio Suárez, Diamondbacks: You want a power hitting third baseman? You want solid defense? You want one of the most beloved and friendliest guys in the game? Suárez is your man. He has 46 homers and 132 RBIs since July 7, 2024. Only Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani have more homers. No one has more RBIs. – Ryan Helsley, St. Louis Cardinals: The Cardinals resisted all offers for him last winter, believing his trade value should only increase. Well, he's not pitching as well as a year ago when he saved 49 games with a 1.101 WHIP – going 3-0 with 14 saves and a 3.67 ERA and 1.444 WHIP – but considering that every contender is seeking late-inning relievers, the Cardinals were wise to hang onto him. He may not get traded if the Cardinals keep winning. – Kyle Finnegan, Washington Nationals: The Nationals parted company with Finnegan last winter when they non-tendered him, not believing he could produce an encore of his All-Star season. He later returned on a one-year, $6 million contract, and here he is again, with 18 saves and and a 2.93 ERA. His WHIP has dropped from 1.335 to 1.229 this year. He'll be a nice fit for a number of teams looking for back-end bullpen help. – Luis Robert, Chicago White Sox: The likelihood of Robert being traded barring an injury? Just about 100%. The White Sox don't want him. They don't need him. And they know they should have traded him during the winter. All they can hope for now is that he starts performing much better after hitting .184 with seven homers, 31 RBI and a .573 OPS this season. He has played better of late with a .703 OPS the last two weeks, leads the league with 22 stolen bases and plays a terrific center field. It's not as if anyone is going to pick up the $20 million options on him this year or next, but the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are keeping close tabs on him. – Philadelphia Phillies: If you know anything about Phillies president Dave Dombrowski, it's that passive isn't in his vocabulary. He realizes this team is getting older, Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Ranger Suarez are pending free agents, and the time is now to win. Anything less than a World Series appearance would be a colossal disappointment. They took a $10 million gamble on Max Kepler that has backfired, and are seeking another left fielder or center fielder plus bullpen reinforcements. – Chicago Cubs: The Cubs didn't trade third baseman Isaac Paredes and prized young outfielder Cam Smith for one guaranteed year of All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker to sit back at the deadline now. The Cubs have led this division since April 4, and if they somehow aren't playing in October there will be some premium jobs available in the front office. Jed Hoyer, president of baseball operations, whose contract expires after the season, knows what's at stake. They are scouring the market for a starter, keeping a close eye on Alcantara (2 ½ years remaining on his 5-year, $56 million contract), Keller (3 ½ years remaining on his 5-year, $70 million deal) and Luis Severino of the Athletics (2 ½ years remaining on his 3-year, $67 million contract). It's highly unlikely, however the A's would consider trading Severino and risk the fallout, even with his dramatic home/road splits (0-7, 6.79 at home; 2-0, 0.93 on the road). Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon could also be intriguing. – Detroit Tigers:The Tigers tipped their hand when they offered Alex Bregman a 6-year, $171.5 million free-agent contract last winter. If the Red Sox shop him, they're all in again, still in need of a third baseman. The Tigers realize this is their chance to return to the World Series for the first time since 2012, and win it for the first time since 1984. They've got ace Tarik Skubal under control through only 2026 and need to take full advantage of having the finest pitcher in the game. Detroit love to add a strikeout pitcher in the bullpen. –New York Yankees: The American League is wide open, and the Yankees are poised to take full advantage of the opportunity. They badly need a third baseman or a second baseman, and realize there's 0% chance that the Red Sox answering their prayers by trading them Alex Bregman. They are keeping a close eye on Suarez and Kiner-Falefa, which would allow them to move Jazz Chisholm back to second base. They have Devin Williams and Luke Weaver at the back end of the bullpen, but would like to have one more arm. Their ultimate prize could be Alcantara, giving them a powerful rotation, particularly when Gerrit Cole returns next year. –Los Angeles Dodgers: You don't havetheir payrolland worry about cutting costs now. The Dodgers may have a stacked team, four future Hall of Famers in their lineup, and Shohei Ohtani, but they also have a few holes. They are seeking another outfielder with Michael Conforto's struggles. They want another starter, and yes, Alcantara is the man they want. The Dodgers are always looking for bullpen help and would like another late-inning reliever like Rays closer Pete Fairbanks. The Dodgers continue to be on the prowl, and Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations, will do everything humanly possible to make sure this team is given every opportunity to become the first NL team to repeat as World Series champions since the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds. Pirates' Paul Skenes, Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski set for 'epic' duelNew Foto - Pirates' Paul Skenes, Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski set for 'epic' duel

Thanks to what is being billed as an "epic" pitching matchup, one of the hottest tickets of the 2025 season will be Wednesday afternoon's rubber game between the host Milwaukee Brewers and the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates. The contest will feature a showdown between two of baseball's hardest throwers in 23-year-old right-handers Paul Skenes (4-6, 1.85 ERA) of the Pirates and rookie Jacob Misiorowski (2-0, 1.64) of the Brewers. The 6-foot-6 Skenes, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft after helping pitch LSU to the national championship and the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, will oppose the 6-7, 197-pound Misiorowski, making just his third big league start after beginning his career with an 11-inning hitless streak that, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, is the longest hitless streak to begin a career in the modern era (since 1900). Expect the radar gun to explode with 100 mph readings. Skenes is averaging 98.1 mph with his four-seam fastball, while Misiorowski comes in at an average 99.7 mph. Per mlb.com, Misiorowski had 29 pitches register 100 mph or more in his last start at Minnesota on Friday night. "When we announced the matchup, we sold about 10,000 tickets in 27 hours," Rick Schlesinger, president of business operations for the Brewers, told FanDuel Network on Tuesday night. "So (Wednesday's) game is essentially sold out. It's standing room only, but it's a matchup for the ages. Two really impressive young pitchers at the top of their game. It should be epic." Skenes is 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two career starts against the Brewers with 19 strikeouts in 13 innings. He's pitched one other time at American Family Field. That was last July 11 when he departed after throwing 99 pitches over seven no-hit innings and striking out 11. Misiorowski, who threw five no-hit innings against St. Louis in his Major League debut on June 12, followed that up eight days later with six perfect innings against the host Minnesota Twins before walking Byron Buxton to start the bottom of the seventh. He then yielded a towering home run down the right field line to Matt Wallner that barely cleared the 23-foot wall. The duo met for the first time in the outfield before Monday night's 5-4 Pirates victory and posed for pictures. "I think it's going to be really entertaining to watch," Misiorowski told mlb.com. "Two guys that are at the top of their game right now. So, I think it's cool. It's going to be fun." Skenes enters the contest leading all MLB qualifiers with a 1.85 ERA and leads the National League with a 0.88 WHIP. "Everything just flows off his back. He never lets anything affect him too much," Pirates manager Don Kelly said. "To be 23 years old and to have the power stuff we all see, but it's that pitch-ability that has really made him special, in my opinion." Milwaukee is coming off a 9-3 victory on Tuesday night, it's fifth win in six games. Joey Ortiz hit two home runs, the first multi-homer game of his career, and drove in four runs. Caleb Durbin also homered and drove in three. Ortiz, who was batting just .183 on June 9, is up to .217 while hitting .424 during his current eight-game hitting streak. "Confidence is No. 1," Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said of the turnaround. "He's starting to get confident and starting to believe when he goes up there that, 'I can do some things.' He's been on a torrid pace here." --Field Level Media

The King of Pop's Final Words and Last Days Revealed in New MemoirNew Foto - The King of Pop's Final Words and Last Days Revealed in New Memoir

The King of Pop's Final Words and Last Days Revealed in New Memoiroriginally appeared onParade. The King of Pop passed away 16 years ago, and now one of his close friends is opening up about the star's final days. Before his tragic death,Michael Jacksonwas preparing for his highly anticipated This Is It concert residency, which was set to run from July 2009 to March 2010. But the 50-year-old singer never got to see it through — he died just one month before the first show. Now, Jackson's longtime friend and personal attorney,John Mason, is sharing what he witnessed in those final weeks. In his new memoir,Crazy Lucky: Remarkable Stories from Inside the World of Celebrity Icons, Mason offers an inside look at Jackson's condition leading up to his death. "In 2009, I was living in Reno when I got a call from someone who told me that Michael was in 'really bad shape,' Mason wrote, according toRadar Online. "He was trying to tour again, but he had collapsed onstage during rehearsals. Yet, he was back at it the next day. Michael was Michael." As concerns about Jackson's health mounted, he was also battling severe insomnia. Concert promoter AEG reportedly brought inDr. Conrad Murrayto help manage his condition. Murray allegedly began administering nightly doses of propofol — a anesthetic typically used in surgery — to help the singer sleep. According to Mason, Jackson's last words were, "I can't function if I don't sleep. They'll have to cancel it. And I don't want them to cancel it." Dr. Murray was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter. His Texas medical license was revoked, and his licenses in California and Nevada were suspended. Though sentenced to four years, he was released on parole after serving two. Mason also claims Jackson was under immense financial pressure, nearing bankruptcy and at risk of losing his beloved Neverland Ranch. He says the medications were meant to help Jackson rest so he could keep performing — but the combination proved fatal. The Grammy-winner died on June 25, 2009, from cardiac arrest caused by a lethal mix of sedatives and propofol. Mason's account adds to the ongoing speculation surrounding Jackson's final days — though his recollections remain alleged.
