USMNT could change its World Cup narrative in Gold Cup final vs. MexicoNew Foto - USMNT could change its World Cup narrative in Gold Cup final vs. Mexico

You ask formerU.S. men's national soccer teamstandouts Marcelo Balboa and Stu Holden about the Concacaf Gold Cup final, and the competitive spirit just oozes from their soul. Especially since USMNT will face its biggest rival, Mexico, in the Sunday, July 6 match at NRG Stadium in Houston. "Listen, you never want to lose to Mexico," Balboa, 57, told USA TODAY Sports, before he joins the Gold Cup's Spanish-language broadcast on Univision, TUDN and ViX. "I'm retired. I haven't played against Mexico a long time. Even when I play in the old legends games, I don't want to lose to Mexico." Holden – who will be on the Gold Cup call alongside play-by-play announcer John Strong on FOX – still remembers how humiliated he felt after playing in USMNT's 5-0 loss to Mexico in the 2009 Gold Cup final. "Man, I would give anything to step on that field on Sunday," Holden said. "And I'm going to step on the field – I just won't be allowed to kick a ball." Coach Mauricio Pochettino, breakout star Diego Luna and the USMNT have a golden opportunity to rewrite the team's narrative ahead of next summer's FIFA World Cup. They could end a tumultuous summer on a high note by lifting a trophy, setting the stage for a World Cup where they could at least be competitive against some of the best national teams in the world. A loss, however? Well, here's where it's important to maintain some perspective. USMNT has been a club on the fly before the World Cup – hiring Pochettino last September, and trying to field a capable roster that won't embarrass itself when the U.S. co-hosts the tournament next summer with Canada and Mexico. By no means are they ready for the World Cup just yet. But they'll have to be when next summer rolls around. Star Christian Pulisic is one of several players not with USMNT during the Gold Cup this summer – his decision to rest upsetting several former players turned analysts, especially after the U.S. lost friendlies to Turkey (2-1 on June 7) and Switzerland (4-0 on June 10) before the tournament. During the Gold Cup, the U.S.beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-0on June 7,beat Saudi Arabia 1-0on June 19,beat Haiti 2-1on June 22,advanced past Costa Rica 2-2 (4-3 on penalty kicks)on June 29 andtopped Guatemala 2-1on July 2 to reach the final. Pochettino has 10 wins in 15 matches since taking the job, a run that included a four-game losing streak going into the Gold Cup. Would another loss to Mexico – in the Gold Cup final – be a failure for Pochettino and USMNT? "No, not at all. The fact that this team got there, I think it's very valuable for Pochettino and his coaching staff," Balboa said, adding it's a prime opportunity for the players pushing for a roster spot to play for USMNT in the World Cup. "Listen, nobody wants to lose. Is it a failure? I wouldn't think it's a failure at all. I think it's just one of those games that it could go either way. One mistake could cost you the game. But at the end of the day, you can't say one game that you lose to Mexico in the final, the tournament was a failure." Holden said he's cautious to put a label like "failure" if this group of USMNT players fall to Mexico because "it would be me getting a little bit lost in the moment." This Gold Cup experience is about Pochettino finding his way as the USMNT coach. It's about players like Luna, who scored both goals against Guatemala, making a name for themselves. It's about others like forwards Brian White and Patrick Agyemang, midfielders Max Arfsten, Jack McGlynn and Sebastian Berhalter, defenders Chris Richards and Alex Freeman, and goalkeeper Matt Freese solidifying their chances to make the World Cup roster. Holden believes a Gold Cup win could solidify USMNT's belief in itself, and send a message to its pool of players that the club is heading in a clear direction under Pochettino's leadership. "That means: You fight like hell on Sunday, and you beat your fiercest rival, and you cap off a great month, and we have a great storyline to tell for the next year," Holden said. Who has won most men's Wimbledon titles? Novak Djokovic chasing history in 2025New Foto - Who has won most men's Wimbledon titles? Novak Djokovic chasing history in 2025

Novak Djokovic has won a record-24 men's singles titles at Grand Slam events during his career. He has enjoyed a great deal of success at Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious of the sport's majors. Wimbledon has been played since 1877, when Spencer Gore defeated William Marshall in straight sets to take home the title. The best players in the world have routinely competed at the All England Club, and many have been able to win the tournament on multiple occasions. Djokovic is one of 31 men to win at least twice at Wimbledon. However, he doesn't own the record for the most titles at the grass-court major. That belongs to one of his counterparts, against whom he went toe-to-toe often during the earlier stages of his career. Who has the most men's Wimbledon titles? Here's what to know about the event's winningest participant and its history. Roger Federer has the most men's Wimbledon wins in the history of the event. He won the title eight times during his storied career, with his first victory coming in 2003 and last in 2017. That included a run of five consecutive titles at the major from 2003-07. That said, Djokovic is breathing down Federer's neck, having won the major seven times. The Serbian star has made the final each of the last six tournaments, winning four consecutive titles from 2018-22 (the event wasn't held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). He lost the last two to Carlos Alcaraz. NOVAK DJOKOVIC:Full history at Wimbledon, list of results by year A total of 16 men have won Wimbledon at least three times. They are as follows: Roger Federer: 8 Novak Djokovic: 7 Pete Sampras: 7 William Renshaw: 7 Bjorn Borg: 5 Laurence Doherty: 5 Reginald Doherty: 4 Rod Laver: 4 Anthony Wilding: 4 Wilfried Baddeley: 3 Arthur Gore: 3 John McEnroe: 3 John Newcombe: 3 Fred Perry: 3 Bill Tiden: 3 Carlos Alcaraz can join that list if he earns a third consecutive victory at the championship in 2025. How the Friends Cast Still Makes Millions from THAT ShowNew Foto - How the Friends Cast Still Makes Millions from THAT Show

They hung out at Central Perk, worried about rent, and somehow never replaced that orange couch. But behind the scenes, the six stars of Friends turned ten seasons of sitcom life into a financial jackpot that just keeps paying out. Yes, even now! Here's how their paychecks kept growing long after the last coffee refill. Credit: IMDb Every actor got $22,500 per episode during season one, which was not bad for newcomers, but far from rich. That amount reached $540,000 each with 24 episodes. What's surprising is that Warner Bros. actually lost money early on, so they gambled on syndication. The first year set the stage for an unprecedented financial trajectory. Credit: IMDb By the second season, the cast was no longer paid equally. Schwimmer and Aniston reportedly earned more as the spotlight shifted to Ross and Rachel. These salary gaps motivated the cast to approach future contract negotiations as a united front, using collective bargaining power. Credit: IMDb Instead of accepting individual deals for season three, the cast negotiated as a united front and secured $75,000 per episode across the board. Warner Bros. had to change its contract strategy. For the first time, TV stars acted as their own union. Credit: IMDb Their pay rose to $85,000 per episode in season four and $100,000 by season five. Those were still rare numbers for TV at the time. The show's popularity helped redefine what networks were willing to spend for consistent ratings and a cast audiences actually missed between seasons. Credit: IMDb Breaking the $3 million mark for a single season was a turning point. At $125,000 per episode, Friends had moved from hit show to cultural mainstay. The cast was now earning salaries on par with movie stars, and the show's hold on pop culture—and their weekly paychecks—showed no signs of fading. Credit: IMDb During seasons seven and eight, each actor earned $750,000 per episode, which was $36 million per person for one season. Warner Bros. knew audiences wouldn't risk a cast shake-up over a pay dispute. These record-setting contracts underscored the market value of familiarity, comfort, and a format viewers refused to outgrow. Credit: IMDb In 2002, the cast signed for $1 million per episode across the final two seasons. At $41 million per season per actor, it broke records. Kudrow, Cox, and Aniston briefly held the title of highest-paid actresses in television history. Credit: IMDb The 2021 reunion wasn't just a nostalgic cash-in. HBO reportedly offered each actor $1 million, but they passed. Eventually, they said yes, for between $2.5 and $5 million each. That one-hour special that took us on an emotional time-travel journey became the paycheck of their full early seasons. Credit: IMDb Even now, each of the six earns about $20 million per year from syndication alone. Warner Bros. brings in about $1 billion annually from reruns, and the cast splits 2 percent. This time, they make money without having to memorize lines or adjust to new scripts. Just steady passive income from decades-old jokes. Those checks haven't stopped in over 20 years. Credit: iStockphoto When Netflix lost the rights to "Friends" in 2020, fans freaked. The streamer had shelled out $100 million just to keep the show for one final year. HBO Max paid even more to secure it next. The series was a top performer on both platforms. Credit: IMDb Post-Friends, Aniston parlayed her success into even bigger paydays. She currently earns $1 million per episode for The Morning Show. She kept herself visible, built a brand, and made sure her payday matched her relevance long after Central Perk closed. Credit: IMDb Kudrow later explained that their joint contract demands were about partnership, and not just money. The characters and actors were inseparable, so fair compensation was a form of creative equity. The precedent helped normalize equal ensemble pay in Hollywood. Credit: IMDb And while that first season didn't turn a profit, syndication flipped the math. With over 100 episodes, "Friends" became globally syndicated. Warner Bros. earned $4.8 billion through syndication deals. The cast got richer, but the studio won the long game, too. Credit: IMDb Each cast member earned around $136 million in pre-tax money from the show. Together, they have more than $816 million. Few actors ever earn that across an entire lifetime of work. The Friends cast pulled it off with just 236 episodes and the right timing in 10 years. Credit: IMDb In interviews, LeBlanc and Kudrow pushed back against the idea that salary defines an actor's worth. For them, negotiations were about timing and leverage, not ego. With no guarantees in their profession, they simply secured what they could, when they could.

BURNLEY, England (AP) — England right back Kyle Walker ended his eight-year stint at Manchester City by moving to Burnley on Saturday in a deal reportedly worth 5 million pounds ($6.8 million). The 35-year-old Walker joins an American-owned team that has just been promoted to the Premier League and is coached by Scott Parker, his former Tottenham and England teammate. Walker has been a great at City, winning six league titles and the Champions League since his 2017 move from Spurs, but lost his place in the team last season and went on loan to AC Milan. He kept his place in the England squad, though, playing in the team's last game — a 3-1 loss to Senegal last month — to move onto 96 caps. "When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at," said Walker, who has signed a two-year deal. "He's done an amazing job here, guiding the club back to the Premier League with a 100-point haul, and now we're looking forward, together, at being back in the greatest league in the world. "Burnley had a tremendous campaign last season, built on an incredible defensive record, and I can't wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad." ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland (AP) — Germany was awaiting news Saturday on the severity of captain Giulia Gwinn's latest knee injury at the Women's European Championship. The 26-year-old Gwinninjured her kneewhile a making a likely goal-saving tacking on Poland captain Ewa Pajor duringGermany's 2-0 winon Friday. She had to be supported off the field in tears after getting hugs from teammates. Gwinn, who previously had two cruciate ligament injuries, was to have an MRI in Zurich on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury. Gwinn missed the 2023 World Cup while she recovered from the second cruciate injury. "We all know Giulia's history. We're all, all of us, keeping our fingers crossed that it's nothing so serious," Germany vice-captain Janina Minge said. "We have to stand together as a team, to stand with her and hope for the best." Jule Brand, who scored one goal and set up the other on Friday, said Gwinn's injury was a "shock for us all. When Giuli is down then it's never good because she always gets straight back up again." Gwinn tore the ACL in her right knee in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2020, then suffered the same injury again in her left knee while training with Germany in October 2022. ACL injuries can vary in severity but can mean as much as a year off if surgery is required. Already this year, Germany goalkeeper Sophia Winkler and midfielder Marie Müller suffered cruciate ligament injuries. Germany star Lena Oberdorf, Gwinn's teammate at Bayern Munich, didn't make the squad because she's still working her way back from her knee injury sustained nearly a year ago in a win over Austria. While trends in popular music will always come and go, true talent always stands the test of time. That's why recently resurfaced footage of The Eagles rehearsing their pitch-perfect harmonies backstage — decades before the advent of autotune — is absolutely blowing fans away. In a video shared to Instagram this week by the account Rock Music, The Eagles — including the lateRandy MeisnerandGlenn Frey,Don Henley,Joe WalshandDon Felder— warmed up by singing "Seven Bridges Road" before their concert at Maryland's Capital Centre on their 1977 Hotel California tour. "Way before any tech could clean things up, they were nailing it just by listening to each other and locking in. It's raw, it's honest, and it's exactly why the Eagles are legends," the caption read. "REAL MUSIC FROM REAL MUSICIANS," declared a second commenter, with another chiming in to say, "Auto Tune sucks and everyone knows it. This sounds incredible the Eagles stand the test of time." "Absolute perfection," raved someone else, adding, "And I've seen them live many times —absolute perfection, every time. It simply doesn't get better than this." "Pure bliss," gushed yet another fan. In a 2018 interview with Classic Rock 256 (viaLouder), Henley looked back at his success with The Eagles, noting, "some of it you can't explain." "You can call it fate, you can call it dumb luck," he reflected. "But you can also give yourself credit for putting yourself in a certain place at a certain time. I sought out the Troubadour because I knew it was the place where things were happening that I wanted to be part of. We're pretty good musicians, but there's more to it than that. There's the work ethic, the perseverance, just hanging in there, going out on stage when you're sick and you don't feel like it."
