EDIRNE, Turkey (AP) — On a grass field slick with olive oil and steeped in tradition, hundreds of boys as young as 11 joined the ranks of Turkey's most time-honored sporting event: the annual Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Championship. Held every summer in the northwestern city of Edirne, the event is said to date back to the 14th century as a way of keeping the Ottoman Empire's fighting men fit and ready for battle. The sport, which is on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list, sees wrestlers cover themselves in olive oil and try to press their opponent's back to the ground to win the bout. Alongside the men contesting, youngsters also don the iconic "kispet" leather trousers to embark on a slippery test of strength, skill and stamina under the scorching sun. The boys are ranked in divisions based on age, height and build, with the youngest generally placed in the "minik," or tiny, category. Under strict safety regulations, their matches are shorter and closely supervised. Most young wrestlers train year-round at local clubs, often in towns where oil wrestling is passed down through generations. While the youngest competitors aren't wrestling for titles like "baspehlivan," the grand champion of the men's matches, their participation is no less significant as it is key to the continuity of a sport that holds deep cultural importance across Turkey. This year's contest – the 664th in its history – saw 36-year-old Orhan Okulu win his third men's title. "My goal was the golden belt in Kirkpinar and thanks to my God, I succeeded," Okulu said of the coveted prize.

The never-before-seen footage showing Burrow, 28, scrolling through his cell phone with his head in his hands after the Cincinnati Bengals' 27-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys is part of the latest season ofNetflix'sQuarterbackseries. The new seven-episode series began streaming Tuesday, July 8 and focuses on Burrow's 2024 NFL season, as well as those of Detroit Lions quarterbackJared Goffand Atlanta Falcons quarterbackKirk Cousins. Burrow's home was broken into on Dec. 9, 2024 while he was out of town for his team's game against Dallas.Four thieveswere later arrested for breaking into the NFL star's home and stealing more than $300,000 worth of jewelry, clothes, luggage and more. Police arrested them after finding selfies of the men posing with the stolen items after the men were pulled over in a routine traffic stop, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of Ohio. ModelOlivia Ponton, whom a sourcepreviously told PEOPLEhas been "hooking up" with Burrow since last fall, was at his home at the time and had her mom call 911 after the thieves shattered a bedroom window to gain access to the house. The Bengals quarterback's reaction is partly shown in the newly released footage shown at the beginning of episode 6 of Netflix's newQuarterbackseason, in an episode titled "Headspace." Burrow still has parts of his uniform and pads on as he checks his phone in the scene, later opening up about the incident and his reaction to it in an interview with Netflix producers. "Of f------ course this happened to me right now," Burrow says he was thinking at the time, noting how he and the Bengals had an up-and-down season and appeared to be turning a corner with its seven-point win over Dallas that night. Matthew Pearce/Icon Sportswire via Getty Later in the week, Burrow told reporters he felt "violated" by the home burglary. Speaking with Netflix, Burrow said he still felt that way while airing frustrations with the celebrity aspect that comes with being an NFL quarterback. "I just get uncomfortable when my life is very public and you know that comes with the job, but there's certain parts of your life that are yours, and your house is one of those," Burrow says. "When that gets violated and people find out where you live and all these different things, not everybody's failures at their job are in front of the whole world. It's a very vulnerable position to be in. I put myself in that position because I love it. I don't like the other part of it." The break in came amid a string of robberies seemingly targeting professional athletes, and two months after the Kansas City-area homes of Chiefs starsTravis KelceandPatrick Mahomeswereburglarized within 48 hours of each other. New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the YearNew Foto - New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks liked Mike Brown's experience with championship teams, after he worked for four of them. That sounds good to a franchise that's been stuck on two titles for more than 50 years but believes its time to win another is now. The Knicks hired Brown on Monday, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau. The Knicksoffered the job to Brownlast week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Theydecided to fire Thibodeaudespite that playoff success and eventually picked Brown, who wasn't out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season. "Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization," Knicks president Leon Rose said in a statement. "His experience leading the bench during the NBA Finals, winning four titles as an assistant coach, and his ability to grow and develop players will all help us as we aim to bring a championship to New York for our fans." Brown led the Kings to a 48-34 record and the postseason in 2022-23 — their first appearance since 2006 — and was voted the Coach of the Year. He also won the award in Cleveland, where he led the Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals. He was on San Antonio's bench when the Spurs won the 2003 NBA title and was with the Golden State Warriors for their 2017, '18 and '22 championships, including going 12-0 as the acting head coach during the 2017 postseason when Steve Kerr was sidelined with a back injury. Brown is 454-304 in 11 seasons, winning at least 45 games in seven of them. He will take over a Knicks team with championship potential. The Knicks won at least 50 games in each of the last two seasons and knocked off 2024 champion Boston before falling to Indiana in six games in the East finals. With the Pacers playing without star point guardTyrese Haliburtonnext season after he tore his right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the NBA Finals and the Celtics in transition with Jayson Tatum hurt and Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday traded, the Knicks will be one of the East favorites. Their starting lineup is set with All-NBA selections Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, and they strengthened the bench Monday by signing former Utah guard Jordan Clarkson, one of the league's highest-scoring reserves, and Guerschon Yabusele, who played last season with Philadelphia. Thibodeau's reluctance to use some of his bench players may have been a reason the Knicks decided to fire him after he led them to the postseason in four of his five seasons. They reached at least the second round in the last three seasons after not winning a single playoff series since 2013. But they haven't won a championship since 1973. Their first title was in 1970, about two months after the 55-year-old Brown was born. ___ AP NBA:https://apnews.com/nba
