K-Pop Fans Indulge in Fandom and Celebrate Their Favorite Idols at KCON Festival in Los AngelesNew Foto - K-Pop Fans Indulge in Fandom and Celebrate Their Favorite Idols at KCON Festival in Los Angeles

K-pop fans of all ages are flocking to the Los Angeles Convention Center this weekend for KCON, the annual three-day festival celebrating Korean music and culture. The festival consists of all-day activities, including a vendor market of various Korean beauty and food brands, multiple stages showcasing rookie acts and meet and greet sessions. Fans then migrate over to the Crypto.com arena each evening for the M Countdown, the main concert event in which multiple K-pop artists and groups perform. More from Variety CJ ENM Launches First Light StoryHouse to Develop Asian Stories With Miky Lee, Janet Yang and Dominic Ng Academy Museum Sets K-Culture Night Event Marking CJ ENM's 30th Anniversary and KCON CJ ENM's 'Law and the City' Scores Strong Global Streaming Performance - Global Bulletin KCON, which is run by Korean media giant CJ ENM, is held in several countries, with the Los Angeles edition serving as the flagship event. The convention, presented by CJ's Korean beauty products brand Olive Young, continues through Sunday. On Friday, fans sported white, pink and green Olive Young totes from a large pop-up space promoting the beauty retailer's upcoming U.S. storefront and some of the top brands it carries. They stopped by different booths throughout the convention hall to pick up free samples of products ranging from skincare to the popular spicy Buldak sauce, as well as coupons for a free cake slice from the bakery chain Tous Les Jours and tastings from the food brand Bibigo. Often, the samples had to be acquired through an initial step, like downloading a brand's app or spinning a raffle wheel or playing games. The performers found themselves up against game rules as well. At the X Stage, artists like So Soo Bin sang and played challenges to help win prizes for audience members. At the Dance Stage sponsored by Jollibee, the group Newbeat competed against a Jollibee mascot to correctly match their dance moves to fast music cues. For attendees like Prescilla Cobieye, the numerous things to do made for a distinct experience. "It's pretty different from your typical kind of concert," Cobieye, 18, said. "You could see different booths with a bunch of different sponsorships and stuff like that, and you could even see the idols walk in…you can't get that at a regular Kpop concert." Cobieye is a fan of NCT127 and Zerobaseone, specifically, and attended a meet and greet for the latter band. The meet and greets allow fans to see their favorite artists more up close on a smaller stage within the convention center. "It was something, it was really packed," Cobieye said. Many families also navigated KCON together like Karsen Lechner, who attended the convention with her daughter in celebration of her sweet 16. "She's pretty much been at the barricade in Artist Stage for most of the day today," Lechner said. The artists Cravity, Lee Young Ji and izna performed on that stage Friday.KCON includes a mix of established and newer acts throughout the weekend. One buzzy subject that was much-discussed among KCON attendees: "KPop Demon Hunters," the animated movie that bowed on Netflix in June featuring numerous K-pop stars in the voice cast. The success of the film, produced by Sony Music Animation, on Netflix's global platform is seen as a sign of K-pop's enduring strength and a validation of the fandom that engrosses millions of fans who reside far outside the boundaries of South Korea. Park Chan Uk, who is VP of live entertainment for CJ ENM, said KCON strives to curate different genres and artist types. Fans will see new idol groups but also solo artists for example. "K Con's main purpose, primary purpose, is to introduce and provide a platform for a global success for K-artists, especially the rookie artists. And I think that aim and that target will continue no matter what," he toldVarietythrough a translator. Of course, the M Countdown is a crucial draw for fans. Melanie Phoutthavong, a 19-year-old fan, traveled from Seattle to attend KCON with her friend. Attending that concert alone makes the whole experience worth it for Phoutthavong: "I know we saw a lot of groups in here, but that concert, it's like the big event. So I'd be happy just to be in there." Friday night's concert included the acts like NCT127, Zerobaseone, P1Harmony, Baby DONT Cry, Lee Young Ji, NOWZ, IS:SUE and IVE. There was also recognition of Korean film and TV, through the special appearances of actors Lee Byung-hun ("Squid Game," "KPop Demon Hunters" and Park Chan Wook's upcoming "No Other Choice") and Yim Siwan ("Squid Game"). "K-pop, K-movies, K-dramas, K-beauty, K-food. We're always falling deeper in love with K-culture and at the center of it, all this, is KCON," Lee said in his remarks, which opened the concert. "For 13 years, since 2012, KCON has connected artists and fans across the globe." Yim, who began as a K-pop singer before transitioning to acting, acknowledged his K-pop roots when he appeared later on during the show. "Maybe that's why the stage still gives me butterflies," he said. He shouted out the night's many performances, including the group izna's rendition of the song "Golden" from the Netflix film "KPop Demon Hunters" which occurred soon after Yim's speech. NCT127, whose performances were incorporated throughout the concert, closed it with the song "Fact Check." They were joined by fans who had competed earlier to be able to dance alongside the group. For K-pop fans, the genre remains a way to be open about one's favorite artists. "I would say it's very comforting being in a community where you can just express your love for music and just your interests in general. And there's no shame here," Phoutthavong said. EUGENE, OR – No hurdles? No problem for Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. McLaughlin-Levrone ditched the hurdles to run the open 400 this season – and so, far so good. McLaughlin-Levrone ran around the track with a comfortable lead down the home stretch and crossed the finish line with a season-best of 48.90 to win the gold medal at the U.S. track and field championships. "I wanted to challenge myself," McLaughlin-Levrone said following the win. "I felt like this is the year I wanted to step out of the box and really push myself in a different way." Isabella Whittaker placed second (49.59) and Aaliyah Butler got third (49.91) to capture the two other qualifying sports for next month's world championships in Tokyo, Japan. Sanya Richards owns the record (48.70) which has stood since 2006. It would be quite the feat for already the top women's track and field athlete in the country. Her resume includes four Olympic gold medals and she's the current world-record holder in the 400-meter hurdles. McLaughlin-Levrone's impressive performance -- without being pushed much by the other competitors -- shows she's inching closer at owning another record in an event that she still calls "foreign" to her. "Everyone talks about the American record of course, that's gonna come when it's supposed to come," McLaughlin-Levrone said. "I think I learned a lot about myself. I think I learned a lot about the 400. But ultimately, every day it's stepping on the track and being the best I can be, figuring out a race that is very foreign to me and taking on new challenges and being comfortable with the 400." McLaughlin-Levrone's performance currently ranks her third in the world in the 400. BOSTON (AP) — Romy Gonzalez homered over the Green Monster on the first pitch faced by a Boston batter, Trevor Story added a two-run shot, and the Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 7-3 on Saturday. Abraham Toro added a two-run drive — one of three homers the Red Sox hit over Fenway Park's fabled left-field wall — and Story added an RBI double as Boston won its third straight. Houston's Christian Walker homered for the second straight day, a two-run shot off Walker Buehler in the first inning. The benches and bullpens cleared when Astros reliever Héctor Neris yelled at the Red Sox dugout and third-base coach Kyle Hudson at the end of the seventh. But order was quickly restored. After beating theAL West leaders on Roman Anthony's walk-off single in the series opener on Friday night, the Red Sox erased a quick 2-0 deficit when Story hit his drive in a three-run third against Colton Gordon (4-4) that pushed Boston ahead 4-2. Story's shot hit the top of a billboard over the Monster seats and bounced out of Fenway after Rob Refsnyder's RBI single. Justin Wilson (3-1) came on in the fifth inning with runners on second and third with Boston leading 6-3 and struck out the only two batters he faced. Aroldis Chapman got the final two outs for his 20th save. Gordon gave up six runs in four-plus innings. Key moment The Astros loaded the bases in the eighth against Jordan Hicks, but Carlos Correa struck out looking on a 99 mph fastball. Key stat Boston's bullpen went 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Up next Astros LHP Framber Valdez (11-4, 2.62 ERA) is set to face Red Sox RHP Lucas Giolito (7-2, 3.80) on Sunday in the series finale. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Comedian Matt Rife buys home of couple who inspired "The Conjuring", becomes 'guardian' of haunted Annabelle doll

Matt Rife is pivoting to the paranormal, at least when it comes to his new pad. The stand-up comedian has bought the former house of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the ghost hunters who inspired the couple played byPatrick WilsonandVera FarmigainThe Conjuringfranchise. "I have officially purchased Ed and Lorraine Warren's home and Occult Museum," Rifewrote on Instagramon Friday, noting that he has become "the legal guardian, for at least the next five years, of the entire haunted collection, including THE ANNABELLE DOLL." In a separatevideo on TikTok, Rife explained the significance of his decision. "This might be the most important and prominent piece of paranormal history in the world," he said. "I know a lot of you guys don't know what any of this means whatsoever, but if you follow ghost stuff, this is as big as it gets." Michael Tackett/ Warner Bros The comedian also clarified that while he does own the physical house, he does not own its various curios. "We are the legal guardians and caretakers of all 750 haunted artifacts and items in the Warren Museum, including the Annabelle doll," he said. "We do not legally own the items, but we are the legal guardians and caretakers of the items for at least the next five years." Rife obtained Annabelle shortly after Dan Rivera, an investigator for the New England Society for Psychic Research, died suddenlywhile showcasing the infamous Raggedy Ann doll in July. The NESPR, which the Warrens founded, claimsthat the doll was at one point attached to "an inhuman demonic spirit." Matt Rife/ Instagram Annabelle inspired the opening scene ofThe Conjuringin 2013, and eventually launched a trilogy of spinoff films: 2014'sAnnabelle, 2017'sAnnabelle: Creation, and 2019'sAnnabelle Comes Home, the last of which took place exclusively in the Warrens' oddity-filled family residence. Rife said his affection for theConjuringmovies inspired his massive purchase. "If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with the paranormal and all things haunted," he wrote on Instagram. "You also may know theConjuringfilms are my favorite scary movies of all time. So I'm incredibly honored to have taken over one of the most prominent properties in paranormal history." Russell McPhedran/Fairfax Media via Getty The comedian went on to claim that the Warrens "arguably put demonology and paranormal into the mainstream" and noted that they "are the very heart of some of the most famous haunted stories of all time," includingThe ConjuringandThe Amityville Horror. Rife also explained that he and his friend Elton Castee, who is taking on the venture with him, intend to ensure that the Warrens' property will still host visitors. "We plan to open the house for overnight stays and museum tours, so you yourself can experience and learn all the haunted history surrounding this amazing place," he wrote. The fictional version of the Warrens will return to the big screen inThe Conjuring: Last Rites, which Farmiga recentlytoldEntertainment Weeklywill be her final outing in the series. Celtics minority owner to buy WNBA's Connecticut Sun, with potential move to BostonNew Foto - Celtics minority owner to buy WNBA's Connecticut Sun, with potential move to Boston

Boston Celticsminority owner Steve Pagliuca has reached a deal to buy the WNBA'sConnecticut Sunand move the team to Boston, reports the Boston Globe. Pagliuca and his group will pay $325 million for the team, a record-setting purchase for a WNBA franchise, with plans to relocate the team from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. According to the report, Pagliuca will also contribute $100 million for a new practice facility. The team plans to play its home games at TD Garden, home to theCelticsand the NHL'sBoston Bruins, and hopes to as soon as the 2027 season. Any sale of a WNBA franchise needs to be approved by the league and the governors of each team. The league has been expanding in the past few years, with theGolden State Valykriesbeginning play this year. The Toronto Tempo will begin play in the 2026 season, with expansion to 18 teams by 2030, with franchises coming to Portland, Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia. There have been reports that the WNBA wants to wait until 2033 to potentially seek Boston as an expansion city for a new team. "Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams. As part of our most recent expansion process, in which three new franchises were awarded to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia on June 30, 2025, nine additional cities also applied for WNBA teams and remain under active consideration," the WNBA said in a statement. "No groups from Boston applied for a team at that time and those other cities remain under consideration based on the extensive work they did as part of the expansion process and currently have priority over Boston. Celtics' prospective owner Bill Chisholm has also reached out to the league office and asked that Boston receive strong consideration for a WNBA franchise at the appropriate time." The Sun has been in Connecticut since 2003, relocating from Orlando as the franchise began as the Miracle in 1999. "I know the quickest way to get a team to Boston is for the Sun to move to Boston," Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey told the Boston Globe. "And I don't want to wait [until 2033]. I don't want Boston or New England to have to wait that long. We've got an incredibly enthusiastic, energized base here that wants to see a 'W' team in Boston and to me this seems to be in everybody's best interests." Mohegan Sun Arena, located inside the Mohegan Sun casino resort, seats 10,000 for basketball. In the past two seasons, the Sun played a regular-season game apiece at Boston's TD Garden, both to sell-out crowds. The Garden has a capacity of 19,000 for basketball. Connecticut most recently went to the WNBA Finals in 2019 and 2022 and has been to the playoffs in each of the past eight seasons, the league's longest active postseason appearance streak. This season, the Sun have the WNBA's worst record at 5-21. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Celtics minority owner reaches deal to buy Connecticut Sun

Jamie McCarthy/Getty Lindsay Lohanis reflecting on the psychological toll of young stardom. TheFreakier Fridaystar contemplated the media frenzy that followed her at the peak of her fame in the 2000s in a new interview published Saturday. "I don't ever want my family to experience being chased by the paparazzi the way I was," Lohan toldthe UK outletThe Times. "They were terrifying moments I had in my life — I have PTSD to the extreme from those things. The most invasive situations. Really scary. And I pray stuff like that never comes back. It's not safe. It's not fair." The actress added that she thinks the paparazzi's boundary-crossing obsession with celebrities has faded over the past two decades. "I feel that it doesn't happen as badly now as it did," Lohan said. "It was way worse when I was younger." Glen Wilson/Disney Lohan is grateful for the advent of social media, which she toldThe Timeshas allowed celebrities to take more control of their narratives. "Now, because of social media, people can tell their own story in the way that you want it to be told," she said. "It has reclaimed the ownership of your life." She continued, "We didn't have that and so, no, I don't think anybody chose that life, but what I have learnt over time is how to separate my private life and public life, and that was difficult for me because nobody ever teaches you how to do that." TheHerbie Fully Loadedstar admitted that she's almost oblivious to constant attention from passersby. "A lot of the time someone who is with me will notice someone filming. I think I've lived with it for so long it doesn't matter," she said. "But then, now, somebody will have a phone up all the time." She added, "That's scary. That feels very uncomfortable. I'd rather someone just ask if they can take a photo or else you get cautious of every move you make." Alexi Lubomirski Lohan also revealed what advice she would give to her younger self. "I would say, 'Slow down,'" she said. "Everybody back then was, 'Go! Go! Go!' I wish somebody could have been behind me saying, 'You're all right. You can slow down, kid.'" The actress, who is now the mother of a 2-year-old son, toldEntertainment Weeklyin its recentFreakier Fridaycover story that family remains her top priority when she chooses projects. "Everything I do is [about] what's going to work for my family," Lohan explained. "If something works around that, it's meant to happen. If it doesn't work around that, it's a no-go." Alexi Lubomirski Lohan's focus on family made playing young star Julia Butters' fictional mother inFreakier Fridayall the more meaningful. "I've never played a mom before on screen, so it's special to me,"she told EW. "I played one inLabor Painsfor a second at the very end, but you didn't see it." Want more movie news? Lohan also explained that when it came time to film the sequel, her maternal experience helped provide perspective she lacked while shooting 2003'sFreaky Fridayas a teenager. "The closeness that you have with your child, and that bond — how irreplaceable that is, and wanting to do the right thing for your child — is always the most important thing in the world, and nothing can stand in the way of that," the actress said. "I also didn't have the calmness that a mother needs to have when a child is losing it." Freakier Fridayhits theaters Aug. 8. Read the original article onEntertainment Weekly
