Jennifer Garner Sends Love to 'Alias' Costar Who Turned 54 on Wednesdayoriginally appeared onParade. There's an old saying that if a friendship lasts for seven years, it will last a lifetime. ForJennifer Garner, there's a good chance that saying is true— just ask her friend of 24 years,Merrin Dungey. On Wednesday, Dungey, Garner's former 'Alias' costar, turned 54 and Garner took to Instagram to celebrate. She shared a carousel of photos of the pair through the years, and gave a subtle nod to the show that brought them together by referring to she and Dungey as their beloved characters' names in the sweet, yet poignant caption. "Sydney & Francie forever. Happy birthday,@realmerrindungey. I love you. ♥️☕️ ♥️" View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jennifer Garner (@jennifer.garner) 'Alias,' created by J.J. Abrams, premiered in 2001, launching Garner, who led the series as CIA agent Sydney Bristow, into superstardom. Dungey played Francie Calfo, Sydney's best friend and roommate, and anyone who watched the series remembers all too well how their storyline ended. Spoiler alert: a knock-down-dag-out fight for the ages. While their friendship captivated audiences, who cherished their on-screen chemistry, the pair's friendship also blossomed off-screen, as evidenced through Garner's slideshow of photos. In 2023, the duo reunited publicly on the SAG-AFTRA picket line during a strike that began when contract negotiations between the actors' union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers broke down. The strike revolved around concerns surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in television and cinema as well as residuals from streaming and job security. Garner shared a smiley photo of the picketing pair to Instagram. Last year, Garner appeared on an episode of the 'The Ringer's'Dear Felicitypodcast and she was asked if she'd ever consider participating in an 'Alias' reboot. "Are you kidding? Of course I would," she replied. "I'd do anything J.J. would direct." Dungey isn't the only 'Alias' cast member Garner has remained close with over the years. In the same interview, she revealed that she's stayed friends with several members of the original cast, including Bradley Cooper, Victor Garber, and Ron Rifkin. She told the co-hosts ofThe Viewin 2023. "Bradley, Victor, and Ron were just together—they were seeingMaestro, which is such an amazing movie. I see Victor and Ron all the time. WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Rookie Leroy Carter was still coming to terms with his inclusion in the All Blacks squad to play in Argentina in the opening rounds of the Rugby Championship when he made the shocking discovery. "The dog ate my passport." The utility back with the Hamilton-based Chiefs was one of four uncapped players included in Scott Robertson's Championship squad. The phone call from Robertson informing him of his selection had come as a massive surprise. Carterwas rushing to get things together for the squad's assembly and departure when he realized the family dog had intercepted his passport. "I got my passport out to take a photo to send to the (team) manager and I just left it on my bedside table," Carter said. "My partner went to the gym and left my dog home alone and it's gone down the hallway, jumped on the bed and just chewed up the passport and my teeth aligners. "It was a bit of a shambles yesterday. I was trying to get an emergency one but I think it's all (sorted) now. I thought it would happen to me, something like that, so no point getting stressed about it." The All Blacks squad leaves Friday to play Argentina in Cordoba on Aug. 17 and Buenos Aires a week later in the first two rounds of the Rugby Championship which also includes Australia and South Africa. ___ AP rugby:https://apnews.com/hub/rugby

Ohio State's QB competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz remains too close to callNew Foto - Ohio State's QB competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz remains too close to call

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — After the first quarter of Ohio State's preseason practices, the competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz for the starting quarterback spot remains too close to call. "The competition continues," coach Ryan Day said. "They both have had good moments and moments where they're growing. I will say I've been pleased with the progress. It's going to go right down to the wire. "The positives of having a competition is that you know every day you got to bring it. The guys are always on edge, they're uncomfortable, they're working at it. I think that's healthy for the entire building." A quarterback competition the season after winning the College Football Playoff championship is routine at Ohio State. The circumstances, though, are different. In 2015, Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett both had experience as they battled. Jones led the Buckeyes to the title when he started the Big Ten championship and both CFP games after Barrett broke his ankle against Michigan. Sayin and Kienholz have a combined 34 pass attempts and 90 college snaps. They are competing to replace Will Howard, who transferred from Kansas State and threw for a Big Ten-high 4,010 yards and 35 touchdowns in leading the Buckeyes to theirsixth national title. Quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler is looking for consistency, especially as the Buckeyes start getting more into situational scenarios during practices the next two weeks. "We have to be great on third down and in the red zone. That's where quarterbacks make their money," Fessler said. "We're in a spot where we're getting more and more of those situations every day. So it's an opportunity for those guys to go out and compete." Sayin has shown better arm strength, though Keinholz has more athleticism after playing three sports in high school. Sayin originally committed to Alabama as the top-rated quarterback in the Class of 2024 and was taking classes when Nick Saban retired. Sayin then entered the transfer portal last spring and came to Ohio State. He played in four games, including the CFP first-round contest against Tennessee, and was 5 for 12 for 84 yards and one touchdown while taking 27 snaps. The sophomore is the slight favorite to emerge as the starter for the Aug. 30 opener against Texas, but he hasn't paid any attention to the outside hype. "I feel like I'm developing in my footwork accuracy and mechanics. It's just all about building confidence. You make a great play, you start to build that confidence," Sayin said. The last snaps Kienholz took in a game were in the 2023 Cotton Bowl against Missouri after starter Devin Brown was injured in the first half. Keinholz struggled, as he completed only six of 17 passes for 86 yards. However, the junior had a great offseason and was one of eight Ohio State players named an Iron Buckeye, which goes to players who excel during offseason workouts. "As a freshman going in there, I didn't really know a whole lot. I didn't really know how protections worked and I mean, now that's something that I feel like I'm pretty good at, and I go out and and execute that well," Keinholz said. "I've been in the offense for three years now, so it's something that I think just more time, more reps and film study, it's helped me get better." Freshman Tavien St. Clair is also getting snaps, but is still getting up to speed with the offense. He did come in as an early enrollee and participated in spring practices. Besides quarterback, Day and the coaching staff are looking for some of the positions to get an established starting group toward the end of the week. Day used a phrase from safeties coach Matt Guerrieri in comparing this week to the third round of a golf tournament, which is typically called moving day. "This is moving week. We want to have our identity and it doesn't need to be in stone, but the players can tell us what we're doing and what our identity is coming out of this week," Day said. ___ AP college football:https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-pollandhttps://apnews.com/hub/college-football

'Wednesday' Season 2 Is Secretly a Gift to Weird AdultsNew Foto - 'Wednesday' Season 2 Is Secretly a Gift to Weird Adults

Steve Buscemi in Wednesday Season 2 Credit - Helen Sloan—Netflix When it comes to youth culture, nothing is more mainstream right now than outcasts. This is not an anecdotal observation—it's a fact, borne out by the immense popularity of the teen-focusedAddams FamilyspinoffWednesday, whose first seasontops Netflix's listof its most-watched English-language shows of all time, with more than 250 million views. (The next two titles,AdolescenceandStranger Things 4, lag by over 100 million views apiece.) Melding horror and mystery with YA drama, it has made a global star of its 22-year-old lead, Jenna Ortega, whose cannily placeddance sceneimmediatelybroke TikTok. Wednesday Addams cracked thetop 10 kids' Halloween costumesthe year after it debuted, second only toBarbieamong name-brand female characters. All of which might suggest to adults thatWednesdayis strictly for Gen Z. Itsfirst seasoncertainly supported that impression. The setting—Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for paranormally gifted misfits—recalledHarry Potter's Hogwarts. The plot put a dark but too rarely novel spin on standard coming-of-age tropes, as Ortega's icy, psychic Wednesday navigated roommate troubles and a supernatural love triangle (see also:Buffy,Twilight,The Vampire Diaries). While those elements remain in Season 2,Wednesday, having saturated the Gen Z market, now feels like it's working harder to entertain older viewers—particularly those of us who fondly remember '90s pop culture. Well, it worked on this elder millennial. Parents, don't tell your tweens, but the new episodes ofWednesdayare secretly a gift to weird adults. After a speed run through Wednesday's summer vacation, which she naturally spent taking out a creepy serial killer played by Y2K spooky-kid icon Haley Joel Osment, Season 2 (whose first four episodes are now streaming, with the last four to follow on Sept. 3) opens with her return to Nevermore. Having vanquished the murderous alliance of her love interest Tyler (Hunter Doohan) and teacher Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci), who had been conspiring against the school's outcast denizens, she's hailed as a hero. Which only makes her grumpier than usual. Adding to Wednesday's foul mood is her family's increased presence on campus. Her little brother, Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), has matriculated as an awkward underclassman. And Addams matriarch Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) has been recruited to raise funds for the academy—meaning, of course, that Morticia's adoring husband, Gomez (Luis Guzmán), won't be far away. Eventually there's a spectacular grandmother in the mix. More on her later. Although Wednesday's perky werewolf roomie Enid (Emma Myers) inherits the love-triangle plot, while Pugsley andhisroommate Eugene (Moosa Mostafa) get wrapped up in a deeply silly storyline involving a pet zombie, the family stuff is a nice respite from a Nevermore social scene that was always the show's least inspired element. It also gives the wonderful Ortega, whose deadpan yet somehow tender performance carried the first season, a chance to play off of many talented older actors. This isn't an entirely new thing forWednesday, whose executive producer and directorTim Burtonhelped discover so many offbeat Gen X-ers. Season 1 also featured Zeta-Jones, Guzmán, and Ricci (a previous generation's Wednesday Addams in two cult-classic '90s movies), as well as Fred Armisen in the role of Uncle Fester andGwendoline Christieas Nevermore's principal. But this time, the adult Addamses are more integral to the story. Now that it is, by many measures, the biggest show on TV,Wednesdaycreators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have the clout (also thebudget) to really go wild with their casting choices. So Christie's disgraced administrator is replaced bySteve Buscemi's Principal Barry Dort, an outcast-pride advocate who craves Wednesday's approval. Buscemi is, of course, famous for playing weirdos and alternative types; in one of his most beloved roles, he starred opposite Ricci as a lonely record collector in the 2001 film adaptation of Daniel Clowes' sardonic coming-of-age comicGhost World. The fantastically versatile Billie Piper, who has charmed geeks inDoctor Whoand goths inPenny Dreadful, makes an intriguing foil for cello phenom Wednesday as the school's new head of music. Her relatively minor role in the early episodes of the season seems likely to anticipate an increased presence in its second half. Gough and Millar have moved to liberate the show from teen-drama clichés by expanding its world beyond the dating woes and questionable authority figures of Nevermore. Tyler's imprisonment at the nearby Willow Hill Psychiatric Facility—whose grimy environs recall Batman's Arkham Asylum,One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and so many other fictional houses of psychological horrors—is the site of a promising new (but easily spoiled) subplot. There, Wednesday meets the unorthodox doctor overseeing his treatment, Rachael Fairburn, played byWestworldstandoutThandiwe Newton. Appearing as Dr. Fairburn's officious assistant, Judi, is none other than Heather Matarazzo, who entered the oddball hall of fame in 1995 with her portrayal ofWelcome to the Dollhouse'smiddle-school reject Dawn Wiener. It's all pretty delightful for those of us who are old enough to appreciate not just the referential casting, but also the just-campy-enough performances that Buscemi, Matarazzo, and the rest deliver. In that respect (and with apologies toLady Gaga, who's slated to appear in the back half of the season), no guest star is more apt than Joanna Lumley. Best known for her long-running role as the debauched, aging fashion victim Patsy Stone in the era-defining '90s British sitcomAbsolutely Fabulous, Lumley turns the diva dial to 11 as Morticia's mortuary-mogul mother, Hester Frump. (Fun fact: Her Burton connection dates back to his 1996 adaptation of Roald Dahl's ooky children's bookJames and the Giant Peach.) Not that the performance is pure fluff. One of the season's more resonant themes is mother-daughter strife; Grandmama's estrangement from her daughter and affinity for Wednesday adds another layer of intergenerational mess. Also? For Patsy fans, it's also nice to see Lumley back in a beehive. Speaking of camp, the most enjoyable of the four episodes that dropped this week is one bigAddams Family ValuesEaster egg. Riffing on Wednesday and Pugsley's gloriously destructive journey to sleepaway camp in that 1993 movie, "Call of the Woe" sees Principal Dort shepherd his students to an overnight wilderness retreat he dubs Camp Outcast. (Gomez and Morticia are also present, as chaperones. You have never seen a tent like the one they construct.) The Nevermore kids soon encounter their ideal nemeses in a troop of normie paramilitary Boy Scout types who've reserved the camp for the same days. The only possible resolution to the double booking—because the two groups have no intention of sharing space—will be obvious to anyone who's ever seen a summer-camp movie from the late 20th century: a color war. I have no doubt that plenty of Gen ZWednesdayviewers have already devouredAddams Family Valuesand its predecessor and will get the callback. I'm sure they'll also eat up all the new characters and settings, whether they recognize them or not. At the same time, I don't think the new season quite resolves Gough and Millar's confusion about what they want their series, which has its fingers in crime and horror and teen soap and family drama and dark comedy, to be; with such an overcrowded surface, it's hard to achieve much depth. In its second season, however, what was once a show that relied almost exclusively on Ortega now has many more things going for it—one of the most welcome of which is genuine cross-generational appeal. "For those who don't know, I am a sworn law enforcement officer, as well as being a filmmaker, and I felt it was important to join with our first responders to help secure the safety of all Americans, not just talk about it," Cain, 59, said. "So, I joined up." USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Cain and ICE for comment. "So, if you want to help save America, ICE is arresting the worst of the worst and removing them from America's streets. I like that. I voted for that," Cain said. "They need your help. We need your help, to protect our homeland and our families." Cain's comments come amid increased scrutiny of ICE in recent months. In June, several demonstrationserupted in Los Angelesin response to a series of immigration raids carried out by the federal agency. The raids, whichsparked nationwide protests, took place as part of a directive fromPresident Donald Trumpto find immigrants living in the United States without legal status. Several celebrities, includingJimmy Kimmel,Kim Kardashian,Cardi BandMark Ruffalo, havespoken out against the ICE raidsand the Trump administration's involvement. Cain portrayed DC Comics legend Clark Kent and his superhero alias, Superman, on "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" from 1993-1997. NFL preseason: 5 things to watch in Week 1, including Shedeur Sanders' start and the J.J. McCarthy era beginningNew Foto - NFL preseason: 5 things to watch in Week 1, including Shedeur Sanders' start and the J.J. McCarthy era beginning

The NFL preseason is about to kick off leaguewide, and while some teams and players have more at stake than others, there's no shortage of interesting storylines. Here are five things to watch in preseason Week 1. Would ya look at that. The stars have aligned for the perfect game to get people interested in the NFL preseason, withBrowns fifth-round rookie quarterback Shedeur Sandersgetting the nod to start their opener against the Panthers.Sanders has been a lightning rod for a few years dating back to his play at Colorado, and now he's going to get the first crack at playing quarterback for the rudderless Browns this season. This decision islargely because of injuries to Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett, but it still will give him a chance to start to separate himself heading into the middle of training camp. Sanders hasn't practiced much with the starters this preseason, which is to be expected as a fifth-round pick, and now can make his mark. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] It's important for everyone to remain level-headed about this. Neither a good nor bad performance means much here. Pickett torched the preseason prior to his last season starting in Pittsburgh. However, it's a start and it's something for Sanders fans to latch onto because he probably won't be playing much during the regular season. The biggest piece of intrigue here is if he can play well enough to surpass the third round-rookie Gabriel on the depth chart. Texans at Vikings, 4 p.m. ET Saturday Mulligan. After being a top-10 pick for the Vikings in 2024, J.J. McCarthy tore his meniscus, resulting in him missing his entire rookie season while Sam Darnold helped take the Vikings to the playoffs. Now, it's the McCarthy show and he's got achanceto have a breakout season in his first year with the reins in his hands. To help his cause, the Vikings completely revamped their interior offensive line and gave themselves, on paper, one of the best offensive lines in the entire league. Justin Jefferson andJordan Addison (minus the first three games)are still here and Kevin O'Connell will put McCarthy in good spots. It's an interesting place for McCarthy to be in his first year as a starter. McCarthy probably should have the expectations of a rookie. On the other hand, everyone knows if he's good enough, the Vikings may be able to go on a run deep into the playoffs. No pressure. He might have the biggest spotlight of any young quarterback in the league with what this team feels like it can accomplish. Raiders at Seahawks, 7 p.m. ET Thursday After nine seasons away from the NFL, including a stop as head coach at UCLA and calling plays for Ohio State, Chip Kelly is back at the professional level. Kelly's last stint in the NFL came as the head coach of the 49ers in 2016, which coincided with an unimaginative offense and one of the worst defenses in the league. While college football is certainly a different game than the NFL, Kelly seems to be rejuvenated and had UCLA moving in the right-ish direction before taking over the Buckeyes' offense and winning a national championship. Now, Kelly is in Las Vegas running the Raiders' offense for the newly hired Pete Carroll. The Raiders needed an upgrade at offensive play-caller with how poorly they performed last season and it'll be interesting to see what Kelly plans to do with his new offense. Geno Smith, Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty are a nice little trio to get things moving, but they'll need Kelly to be the offensive genius he's billed to be in order to keep pace with the other teams in the division. Kelly has been a centerpiece figure of the past two decades of college and pro football, now he's back and has to get this Raiders offense moving in a hurry. Modern NFL fans have their version of a renaissance man who hasn't been seen in a very, very long time.Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter appearsto be headed toward doing the unthinkable: be a near full-time player on both sides of the ball. Right now, Hunter has been running with the starters on offense while rotating in on defense, but his skill level at cornerback is all the talk in Jacksonville. He might be too good at that position to not start. The Jaguars will get a first glimpse at the feasibility of Hunter's two-way goals in their preseason opener. It's unknown how many snaps Hunter will play this weekend, but this is the most fascinating rookie of this era of football. There's a long way to go in terms of figuring out if an NFL player can play significant snaps on offense and defense, but the fact that he's talented enough to try makes him an all-time prospect. Even in the preseason, this is going to be worth carving out time for, just from a spectacle standpoint. It seems like the Colts are on their last legs with this whole Anthony Richardson thing and now he finds himself in aquarterback battle for his job … against Daniel Jones. Truthfully, it's a little unclear what exactly Jones is supposed to provide that Richardson doesn't already, so if he can handle business in camp and during the preseason he should at least get one more shot to be the Week 1 starter for the Colts. The book on Richardson is the same as it's always been. He has all the physical talent in the world, sees the field well enough, but his accuracy has been all over the place. If he can find a way to increase his completion percentage and scale back some of the deep passing attempts, there's room for him to continue as the Colts' starting quarterback — but the clock's been ticking and every single rep, preseason included, will help determine his future.

'What a city': Son Heung-min lands at Los Angeles FC with plans for trophies, love for Korean fansNew Foto - 'What a city': Son Heung-min lands at Los Angeles FC with plans for trophies, love for Korean fans

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Son Heung-min made his first visit to Los Angeles seven years ago during Tottenham's summer tour. He met with Los Angeles FC's Korean supporters club and even donned a sombrero from grateful Mexican fans thanking the South Korean forward for scoring a famous goal in the 2018 World Cup. Son planned another visit to Los Angeles and Las Vegas years ago, but he had to cancel the expensive trip after breaking his arm in a game. "I thought I might never come back to Los Angeles, but now I'm here," Son said with a laugh. Son knows he'll have plenty of time to enjoy the town this time around as he begins the next chapter of his groundbreaking career with LAFC. "I'm here to win, and I will perform," Son said Wednesday. "I will definitely show you something exciting ... are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show some exciting football, and we definitely will have success." LAFC formally introduced its new centerpiece at a packed news conference at BMO Stadium, where his likeness already looms over the main entrance gates and on video billboards for miles around the arena. The 33-year-old superstar is back on the Pacific Rim after a professional career spent in Europe, includingthe past decade at Spurs. "What can I say? Dream come true. LA, what a city," said Son, who will wear No. 7 in black and gold. Son signed with LAFC as a designated player through the 2027 season, and he has two contract options that could keep him with the Major League Soccer club through June 2029. LAFC paid a transfer fee north of $20 million, likely an MLS record, for the league's biggest signing sinceLionel Messi. "I'm here to make this league even bigger, and I will do anything to make this club in a better position," Son said. Son is widely considered the greatest Asian player in soccer history. He had suitors from around the globe after he decided to leave Spurs with a year left on his contract, and he said the decision to join LAFC initially wasn't obvious. He came around to the idea of moving to MLS after conversations with LAFC general manager John Thorrington, who sold Son on the 8-year-old club's ambition to be an international brand and the most successful club in North America. He also embraced the opportunity to play in the city with the world's largest ethnic Korean population outside Korea and a robust base of soccer fans from all backgrounds who appreciate his accomplishments. "If I'm honest, it was not my first choice," Son said. "But (from the) first call when I talked to John after the season finished, he just changed my mind. He changed my heart. He changed my brain. He showed me the destination where I should be. Right now, I'm here. I'm more than happy." Son laughingly said he was also pitched aggressively by Hugo Lloris, his longtime teammate at Tottenham who is now LAFC's starting goalkeeper. Lloris strongly praised his family's LA experience — with one caveat. "Hugo only said the traffic is bad," Son said with a grin. "But I know London, the traffic is also quite bad. The traffic I can deal with, no problem. I just have to leave 10 minutes earlier. I'm experienced, you know?" Son joins a lengthy list of soccer stars from European leagues who moved to Hollywood for their second act. Gareth Bale, Giorgio Chiellini and Olivier Giroud have all suited up for LAFC, while the crosstown rival LA Galaxy have welcomed even more European superstars, including David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robbie Keane and Marco Reus. Son did not appear to be in significant decline during the past season as Tottenham's captain, and he said he is in good game shape after participating in Spurs' summer tour of Asia. He did not set a date for his LAFC debut, but it is likely to be this month on the road, since LAFC doesn't have another home match until Aug. 31. "I just felt like I need a new chapter, I need a new challenge, and I choose LAFC," Son said. "I think we can say I'm old, but I still have a good physicality, good legs, and still have a good quality. I'm here to perform, but also I want to give some advice to the young players for improvement. That's why we are here." Son's introductory news conference was attended by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, South Korea's consul general, dozens of Korean journalists and dozens of drum-beating, singing fans from the LAFC supporters' group famous for its relentless, raucous noise during matches. "On behalf of millions of Angelenos and soccer fans around the world — Sonny, welcome to Los Angeles," Bass said. "This is a moment that will be remembered in the city for generations to come." Son already got a taste of LAFC fans' passion Tuesday when he attended the club's Leagues Cup victory over Tigres, saying he was overwhelmed by the energy in BMO Stadium even for a non-MLS match played largely by LAFC's second stringers. "Yesterday I was in the game watching you guys supporting like crazy," Son said. "It was insane. I just wanted to run onto the pitch and show you guys my performance." ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/soccer

Despite years of sparing updates, a representative for Polygram Entertainment confirmed this week that Sony's Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne biopic is still moving forward, and that "they're currently in negotiations with a director, which could be confirmed very soon." In 2021, Sony announced that it would be making a film based on the heavy metal legend's relationship with his wife and manager. The studio was developing it with Polygram Entertainment and Osbourne Media, the film and television arm of Universal Music Group and the Osbourne family's media label, respectively. Sharon, as well as her and Ozzy's children, Jack and Aimee Osbourne, were attached to produce alongside Polygram's Michele Anthony and David Blackman and Sony's Andrea Giannetti. Polygram's recent statement confirms that Hall is still involved alongside the original producing team. Who the team is considering for director or when the selection will be announced remains under wraps. Given Ozzy's iconic persona—both on-stage as the leader of Black Sabbath and an illustrious solo career and on-screen as the central figure in MTV's reality series "The Osbournes" alongside his family—it's no surprise that he has long been an attractive subject for a scripted feature film. Back in 1998, screenwriter Ryan Jaffe ("This Is Happening," "The Rocker") sought to produce a film based on Ozzy and Sharon's relationship. "I was an assistant at Industry Entertainment, before the Osbournes even had a reality show," Jaffe tellsVariety. "There was a 'Behind The Music' about Sharon and Ozzy, and I just thought it was the most amazing love story that I had ever seen. I tried to develop it as a producer. I got the blessing of my boss to pursue it and had several meetings with Sharon and Ozzy." The project, however, never came to fruition. "It was a great experience," Jaffe reflects. "Unfortunately, they weren't able to make a deal with New Line, which was the studio at the time, and it just kind of went away." Years later, Jaffe wrote a screenplay for his Sharon and Ozzy story on spec. "I just loved that story and was never able to let it go," he shares. "I thought it was a very unique way to tell a story that was an interesting take on a biopic: not so straightforward. It was really their story together, how they kind of saved each other's lives in a lot of ways." Titled "Sharon," his script was featured on the 2018 Blacklist and was read by several producers and managers. While some might have expressed interest, the rock-n-roll romance story was written without Sharon or Ozzy's input or blessing. While both are public figures, telling their story justly would likely need their participation. Likewise, an Osbourne biopic would be nothing without Ozzy's music, and securing the licensing rights would add a hefty expense to the project. Varietyreported in 2021 that Sony's film will indeed include music from Black Sabbath as well as Ozzy's solo career. The Osbourne family and Polygram Entertainment, which previously produced scripted and unscripted projects like "The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?," "Beastie Boys Story," "The Go-Gos" and "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist," presumably facilitated the film's use of Ozzy's music. Ozzy Osbourne passed away on July 22 at the age of 76. The singer-songwriter was immensely popular over his fifty-five-year career, and his work has experienced a resurgence since his passing. His music is being listened to precipitously, "The Osbournes" clips are flooding social media and tributes to the artist are ubiquitous. Given that this coincides with Hollywood's penchant for musical biopics like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Elvis," "A Complete Unknown," and the upcoming Beatles tetralogy as a marketable subgenre, moving forward with an Ozzy film seems natural.
