ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) —Chiefsquarterback Patrick Mahomes is glad that coach Andy Reid is sending him onto the field with the rest of their starters when Kansas City visits the Arizona Cardinals for their preseason opener Saturday night. "I don't necessarily look forward to getting hit," Mahomes added with a smile Thursday. Getting hit is exactly why some teams have eschewed playing starters at all in the preseason. When coaches finally decided it wasn't worth the risk to their most valuable players, they began sitting them for one or two games, and last year, teams such as the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles sat them for the entirety of their exhibition slate. That has never been Reid's preference, though. Nor has it been that of Mahomes, who believes it does him some good to get hit — once, at least — so that he can get into the right mindset for the rest of the preseason and ultimately the regular season. "There's always a little shock," Mahomes said. Now, don't get any misconceptions. The Chiefs might only have those starters on the field for a single series in Arizona, especially if it goes well. But the plan, at least after their final practice before their opener, was that each quarterback will get a full quarter — Mahomes the first, Gardner Minshew the second, Bailey Zappe the third and Chris Oladokun the fourth. The rest of the offense would presumably follow suit. There are certainly things that the three-time defending AFC champions want to see out of their preseason opener. Tops on the list is their new-look offense line, where first-round pick Josh Simmons has already turned some heads as the new left tackle and Kingsley Suamataia has the inside track on replacing two-time All-Pro Joe Thuney at left guard. The Chiefs have invested heavily in their offensive line, both in draft capital and financial resources, over the past couple years, and the need to upgrade the left side in particular became evident in their Super Bowl loss in February. There is also some competition for the final spots at wide receiver, and some different names could get some extended looks with the first-team offense. That's because Rashee Rice is sidelined with a groin injury and Marquise Brown with an ailing ankle. "I think (my advice) is go out there and do what they're doing this camp," Mahomes said. "It's going to be a bigger stage going up against another team, but I think Coach Reid prepares us better than anybody else in the league to go out there and play your best football. We practice hard and we practice fast so when it gets to the game, it's not that huge step up." It's still a substantial one, especially given Arizona is taking the same approach as Kansas City this year. Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon, who held out quarterback Kyler Murray and others his first two years and barely played any starters in the preseason last year, said this week, "I told them (Monday) night that they are going to play." "It's the best thing for our team this year, honestly," Gannon explained. "We are at a good point with our health, we're at a good point with our development, and I think this year with our team it's the best thing to do for our guys." NOTES: Hall of Fame WR Terrell Owens watched the Chiefs practice at Missouri Western on Thursday. He played two seasons for Reid in Philadelphia. "Just watching people grow, I'm in a great position to see that," Reid said. ... Former Raiders coach Antonio Pierce also has been in camp, helping longtime friend and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. "Maybe we'll ask him about some Las Vegas Raiders stuff," Spagnuolo said with a smile. ... CB Kristian Fulton (knee) came off the PUP list and took part in individual drills Thursday. LB Drue Tranquill (back) also returned to practice. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Brian Daboll remains coy about who exactly will be in uniform for the New York Giants in their preseason opener this weekend at Buffalo, other than to confirm the obvious that rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart will play. Dart said Thursday that members of his family will be in Orchard Park, New York, on Saturday for his NFL exhibition debut. Neither he nor Daboll would reveal the plan for how much playing time thefirst-round pick out of Mississippiis expected to get. "I'm just stoked for the opportunity," Dart said. "This is just the start of a dream of mine, so excited to take that next step, be out there, compete at the highest level." Daboll said before practice that decisions would be made afterward and evaded numerous questions about whether the starters would see the field against the Bills, adding, "The guys that can play will play." He ruled out rookie running back Cam Skattebo, who has beensidelined from team drillsin training camp this week after an injury setback. Top receiver Malik Nabers seems unlikely to play as the coaching and medical staffs manage his toe injury. "That's up to the coaching staff and what they want to do, what guys they want to put out there," Nabers said Wednesday. "But I will continue to stay ready, so whatever they do I'm going to just be ready. When my name is called to go out there, I'm going out there." Russell Wilson, who has beenrepeatedly called the No. 1 quarterback, and the rest of the starters figure to get some snaps this month, even if it's not right away. Players on offense in recent days expressed a desire to play alongside Wilson some before the regular season starts Sept. 7 at Washington. Offensive lineman Greg Van Roten said there's definitely a benefit to being together and knowing how a quarterback will operate from an important position once things are real. "He's never played with us in a real game: He's never played behind our line, played with our backs, played with our receivers," veteran receiver Darius Slayton said Tuesday. "I don't think that you can minimize what those reps mean with all the new people. He's been playing football for a long time, but things change when you go different places and you have different pieces." In the spotlight for the Giants along with Dart areNo. 3 pick Abdul Carterand a couple of positions where the starting job is up for grabs. The main competitions are at right guard between Van Roten and converted tackle Evan Neal and at cornerback between Deonte Banks and Cor'Dale Flott. Carter is joining apass rush that could be elite. But unlike Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Dexter Lawrence, the Penn State product has not yet played a game as a professional to show what he can do. "Definitely a good opportunity for me to get my routine down coming into a football game," Carter said. "My last game was, shoot, six months ago or something like that? So, it's cool to come out here, get a routine down and play football again." ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Why Matthew McConaughey missed out on the lead role in 'Titanic'New Foto - Why Matthew McConaughey missed out on the lead role in 'Titanic'

Matthew McConaugheywas almost the king of the world. An upcoming book by late "Titanic" producer Jon Landau has reportedly revealed why the "True Detective" star, 55, lost the lead role inJames Cameron's1997 blockbuster toLeonardo DiCaprio. In his newsletter "What I'm Hearing,"Puck's Matthew Belloni publishedan excerpt from Landau's book "The Bigger Picture," which reveals details about McConaughey's screen test for the role of Jack in "Titanic." "We brought him in to do a scene with Kate (Winslet)," the book says, according to Puck. "You want to check for chemistry, not just how people look on film but how they interact." "Kate was taken with Matthew, his presence and charm. Matthew did the scene with the drawl. 'That's great,' said Jim (Cameron). 'Now let's try it a different way.' Matthew said, 'No. That was pretty good. Thanks.' Let's just say, that was it for McConaughey." USA TODAY has reached out to Disney, owner of the book's imprint, Hyperion Avenue. McConaughey has previously discussed being up for the role of Jack in "Titanic" in numerous interviews. During a 2019appearance on "Watch What Happens Live," he claimed his audition "went really well," so much so that he thought he landed the part. "(It went) well enough where when I left, I was being glad-handed and slapped on the back like, 'This is what we're looking for. You got it,'" he said. "Well enough where you get outside, you call your agent, and you go, 'Oh, I nailed it. This is happening.'" McConaughey has also denied a rumor that he did get the role, but turned it down. Speaking onRob Lowe's "Literally!" podcast, he clarified, "I did not get offered that role. For a while there, I was thinking, 'I've got to find that agent. They're in trouble!' Well, I didn't ever get the offer." Though DiCaprio wound up playing Jack, he almost lost out on the part, too. In a 2022video interview with GQ, Cameron revealed DiCaprio nearly wasn't cast because he didn't want to do a screen test with Winslet. "He said, 'Oh, I don't read,'" Cameron recalled. "I shook his hand and I said, 'Well, thanks for coming by.' He said, 'Wait, wait, wait, you mean if I don't read, I don't get the part, just like that?' And I said, 'Oh, yeah, come on. ... You're going to read or you're not going to get the part." According to Cameron, DiCaprio reluctantly agreed to do the reading with Winslet but had a "negative" attitude about it – "right up until I said action, and then he turned into Jack." John Nacion/Variety via Getty; Araya Doheny/Variety via Getty Justin Baldoni's lawyers responded to Blake Lively's allegation that they were behind details of her deposition being "leaked" to media "She does not cite any evidence. This is not surprising as there is none," his lawyers wrote in a filing Lively was questioned by Baldoni's lawyers during her July 31 deposition Justin Baldoni'slegal team is pushing back onBlake Lively'sclaim that theyleaked details from her deposition to the press. In an Aug. 6 court filing responding to Lively's previousmotion to strike, Baldoni's attorneys addressed the accusation, writing that the actress "alleges that 'it also appears that the Wayfarer Defendants immediately leaked details from the deposition to the tabloid media.' She does not cite any evidence. This is not surprising as there is none." Baldoni's attorneys argued that potential leaks could have come from Lively's own side, not theirs, after her July 31 deposition. They also questioned why Lively, 37, assumed their team was responsible, pointing out there were several other possible sources. "Ms. Lively also fails to explain why any such 'leak' could not have originated from Ms. Lively, her husband [Ryan Reynolds], her multiple attorneys, legal or administrative staff from the law firm representing her (whose office she demanded host the deposition), or the catering staff employed thereby who served lunch," they wrote in the filing. Nathan Congleton/NBC via Getty Baldoni's lawyers went on to reject the idea that the presence of attendees at the deposition was in any way sensitive or notable: "Putting aside the identity of the culprit, the identities of those in attendance for her deposition are not newsworthy because all parties are entitled to attend all depositions." In an Aug. 7 statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for Lively says, "We are very pleased with the outcome of her deposition and now look forward to deposing Justin Baldoni and each of the co-defendants in short order." "Deposition testimony is confidential for good reason — it's evidence in a legal proceeding and is subject to objections and evidentiary rules," adds the spokesperson. "Juries aren't just handed deposition transcripts to read at home, and instead they listen to testimony that is presented at trial under a judge's supervision." https://people-app.onelink.me/HNIa/kz7l4cufid The dispute is part of an ongoing legal battle stemming from the filmIt Ends With Us, in which Lively co-starred with Baldoni, 41, who also served as the director. In her Aug. 4 motion, Lively pointed to tabloid stories fromTMZ and theDaily Mailthat included unnamed sources, arguing the coverage supported her claim that Baldoni's team was trying to "create a media circus around Ms. Lively's deposition" and promote the idea that it was a dramatic "face-to-face showdown" between the two stars. In addition to the leak allegation, Lively's attorneys also asked the court to strike a292-page rough draft of her deposition transcriptfrom the sealed court record. They claimed Baldoni's team included the full document, even though only two pages were cited, "with no plausible legal reason to do so." Her legal team alleged the goal was to push the transcript "into the public domain as fodder for [their] media campaign." Baldoni's attorneys countered that the transcript had been properly filed under seal, pointed out it contained Lively's "own words," and questioned why she would want to conceal her own testimony "in an action in which she is the plaintiff." A trial is scheduled for March 2026, where both Lively and Baldoni are expected to testify. Read the original article onPeople

Steelers will sit QB Aaron Rodgers, other starters in preseason opener against JacksonvilleNew Foto - Steelers will sit QB Aaron Rodgers, other starters in preseason opener against Jacksonville

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) —Aaron Rodgers'debut in Pittsburgh will have to wait. Steelershead coachMike Tomlinsaid the team's new quarterback and most of its other high-profile starters won't play when the club opens the preseason inJacksonvilleon Saturday. T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Jonnu Smith, DK Metcalf and Jalen Ramsey are also among the group that will watch from the sideline. "They need less runway to take off, to be honest with you, because of their experience and where they're at in their careers," Tomlin said Thursday. Rodgers, who signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in early June, said Wednesday he was open to making a rare exhibition game appearance. Tomlin doesn't think it's required, though he didn't rule out Rodgers making a cameo on the field later in the preseason. The first-team offense struggled in the early days of training camp at Saint Vincent College. Tomlin said there's been a notable "upswing," a major factor in why he's in no hurry to rush the NFL's oldest player into game action. "I just make judgments based on what I'm looking at," Tomlin said. "I just feel comfortable with what I've seen during this portion of the process that makes me (OK with Rodgers sitting out)." Rookie quarterback Will Howard is unavailable after injuring his right (throwing) hand on Tuesday. Tomlin described Howard as "week to week," and said there's a chance Howard will be available at some point later this month. The Steelers signed well-traveled backup quarterback Logan Woodside to pick up some of the reps with Howard out. Woodside has a long relationship with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. The two were together in Tennessee in 2019 and 2020 when Smith was the Titans' offensive coordinator. Woodside also spent time in Atlanta during Smith's three-year tenure as Falcons' head coach. There's a chance Woodside could be available to play against the Jaguars, though the bulk of the snaps will likely be split between veteran Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Elvis Presley's Most Complicated Relationship Gets Spotlighted in New Bookoriginally appeared onParade. Elvis Presley's rise to superstardom was anything but a solo act. His talent and drive were matched by a powerful partnership with one of the most influential figures in his inner circle. But behind the spotlight, their relationship would become one of the most controversial alliances in music history. The King of Rock and Roll and his manager,Colonel Tom Parker, were an undeniable force. Together, they conquered the entertainment world with determination, talent, and a mutual respect for each other's strengths. The Colonel and the King: Tom Parker, Elvis Presley, and the Partnership That Rocked the WorldbyPeter Guralnickdelves into their complicated relationship. Each depended on the other for a myriad of professional and personal reasons, but their union faced many challenges. This new book is based on an archive of letters penned by Parker, which Guralnick first discovered in 1989.Commercial Appealspoke to the book's author, delving deeply into what did and didn't work in Presley and Parker's partnership. Parade Daily🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 "He believed in Elvis," the author said. "He believed that he was the greatest." Guralnick continued, "His faith in Elvis had to do with a future which couldn't be foretold. He and Elvis had a vision of something that had not yet been achieved. Yet, he believed that together they would achieve it." Together, Presley and Parker created a music dynasty, making Presley an undeniable force in rock and roll for over two decades. However, in the years after the singer's death, Parker's role in his career took on a more villainous slant. In the Baz Luhrmann filmElvis, Parker is a particularly polarizing character. He was depicted as a controlling and manipulative force who held significant power over both Presley's career and personal life. The book attempts to debunk that longstanding myth. The author reveals that through Parker's letters, a different picture was painted of his involvement in the singer's downfall. "As Elvis began to have his personal difficulties, and his behavior became more and more publicly erratic, and certainly after he died, there was a need for some kind of blame," Guralnick revealed. "And the easiest thing was to lash out at the manager, who had always promoted the myth of himself as a kind of outlandish Svengali." He continued, "There's no question that he created that myth. And he enjoyed the benefits of that for many, many years. But eventually that same reputation would come to work against him." After Presley's death in August 1977, Parker continued to manage his likeness. But after Vernon Presley died in 1979, his situation changed dramatically. In 1982, the Presley estate took legal action against Parker, accusing him of fraud and mismanagement. An out-of-court settlement came the following year, and Parker officially ended his legal connection to the estate. Colonel Tom Parker died in January, 1997. Ex-Miami Heat security guard charged in massive theft of memorabiliaNew Foto - Ex-Miami Heat security guard charged in massive theft of memorabilia

A formerMiami Heatsecurity guard was charged this week with transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce, accused of stealing jerseys and other memorabilia and selling the items to online brokers. Federal authorities in Florida saidthat 62-year-old Marcos Thomas Perez, a retired police officer who spent 25 years with the Miami Police Department, who also worked for NBA security, stole items from the Kaseya Center, the Heat's home arena, by accessing a secured equipment room to take over 400 game-worn jerseys and other items, including a game-worn LeBron James Miami Heat NBA Finals jersey from 2013 that netted him approximately $100,000. Perez worked for the Heat from 2016 to 2021. The equipment room had game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia that the Heat intended to display in a future team museum. That Game 7 jersey sold at a Sotheby's auction in January 2023 for $3.7 million. Over a three-year period, Perez allegedly sold over 100 items, sometimes shipping them across state lines, for about $2 million. Authorities said those items sold were well below the market value. Authorities executed a search warrant in April on Perez's residence, where they found nearly 300 additional stolen game-worn jerseys and memorabilia. The Heat said those items were indeed stolen from their facility. Report: Celtics' $6.1B sale expected to close within two weeksNew Foto - Report: Celtics' $6.1B sale expected to close within two weeks

The $6.1 billion sale of the Boston Celtics to William Chisholm and partners is expected to close within the next two weeks, Sportico reported Thursday. The deal is still pending the approval from the NBA's board of governors, made up of the 30 team owners. Their vote can be conducted remotely. A group led by Chisholm announced plans to purchase the Celtics from the Grousbeck family in March. At the time, the $6.1 billion price tag was the highest ever paid for a North American sports franchise. In June, Mark Walter reached an agreement to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers at a $10 billion valuation. Chisholm, the co-founder and managing partner of the California-based private equity firm STG Partners, is a Massachusetts native and longtime Celtics fan. He is expected to take over as the team's governor from Wyc Grousbeck after the 2027-28 season. Grousbeck and the ownership group Boston Basketball Partners LLC purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002. BDT & MSD Partners and JPMorgan Chase, who are coordinating the Celtics' sale process, and the NBA declined to comment to Sportico about the timing of the closing. --Field Level Media
