LONDON (AP) — A tribute to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva was disrupted on Sunday when some fans at the Community Shield match failed to observe a moment's silence. Before the game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium both teams and their staff stood silently to commemorate the brothers, whodied in a car accident in Spainin July. A minority of Palace fans broke the silence, eliciting a strong response at the other end of the field as well as from other Eagles supporters who tried to silence those not respecting the tribute. Referee Chris Kavanagh then blew his whistle to signal the end of the tribute. Liverpool manager Arne Slot later played down the incident. "I don't think this was planned, or that this was the idea of the fan that made some noise. Maybe he wasn't aware of the fact that it was the minute of silence," he said. "And I think then the fans of Palace were trying to calm that person or those persons down ... They tried to calm him down, but that was a bit noisy as well. And then our fans reacted, 'Hey, what's happening here?'" Palace won the match --beating Liverpool 3-2 on penaltiesafter the game ended 2-2. This was Liverpool's first major game since the death of Jota, who was 28. The brothers died when the Lamborghini they were in veered off a road and burst into flames near the northwestern city of Zamora. The Premier League champion has made a number of tributes to Jota following his death, including retiring his No. 20 jersey. Liverpool supporters began to applaud Jota when Sunday's game reached the 20-minute mark and that applause quickly erupted into cheers as new signing Jeremie Frimpong scored to put the Merseyside club 2-1 ahead. The Community Shield is seen at the traditional curtain-raiser for the top-flight season in England and is played between the defending league champion and the winner of the FA Cup. ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

"Glee" stars share how it feels to rewatch episodes after cast deaths: 'Obviously it's hard'

FOX Image Collection via Getty GleestarsKevin McHaleandJenna Ushkowitzrecently opened up about how it felt to rewatch the entire series on their podcastAnd That's What You REALLY Missed. Appearing on a "pod swap" with the hosts ofHow Rude, Tanneritos!,the actors shared how difficult it was to see their old costars Naya Rivera and Cory Monteith onscreen after their deaths. McHale recalled his first attempt at aGleerecap show with Ushkowitz, which they shut down in 2020 afterRivera's death. That podcast, calledShowmance, had been the first time that McHale and Ushkowitz had revisited the series since wrapping. Even before Rivera's death, McHale said it was "hard" to watch Monteith, who died during the fifth season of the show. "I couldn't really listen to the songs he was singing on and it was just hard," he said. "But watching it really helped me get through it." Revisiting the episodes helped the podcasters work through their grief. Ushkowitz said it created a new opportunity for healing, especially since the cast had to perform their despair "live" after Monteith's death. FOX Image Collection via Getty Gleepaid tribute to Monteith in the season 5 episode titled "The Quarterback." The New Directions sing various songs to honor the memory of Monteith's character Finn Hudson, who the creators killed off. "We had to mourn all that in the show, like, while we were filming it, and move on without him," Ushkowitz said. As time has passed and the duo createdAnd That's What You REALLY Missed,McHale said they entered the rewatch process with the goal of celebrating theirGleefamily. "It really is a gift that we get to watch this, and we got so many moments of how great they are as people shine through in their performances as characters," he said. "Obviously it's hard. Some episodes are easier than others, but it has been another really nice surprise of doing all this." Gie Knaeps/Getty Before he died in 1997 at the age of 30, Jeff Buckley released the hit 1994 album,Grace Friends and his former partner tell PEOPLE the singer felt immense pressure after his debut and struggled with fame "It was just heartbreaking because it was overwhelming for him," his former girlfriend, Rebecca Moore, says of the demands placed upon him Jeff Buckleybegan his musical career carrying a burden: the legacy of a father he never knew. "He didn't want to be known as Tim Buckley's son," says director Amy Berg, whose new documentary on the "Hallelujah" singer,It's Never Over, Jeff Buckleyis out now. Tim Buckley, an experimental folk singer with a cult following, left before his son was born and died in 1975 when Jeff was 8. "That ghost haunted him," Berg says. Magnolia Pictures When Buckley signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Columbia Records, the expectations were even greater. "It was a ton of pressure," his former girlfriend, Rebecca Moore, says. "For every artist, a big record contract's going to be pressure. But this for him had the added weight of legacy of his dad, and he was under pressure to do something unique." At Columbia, "there were a lot of eyes on him," adds Buckley's former tour manager Gene Bowen, who says that label execs looked at him as an artist in the vein ofBob DylanandBruce Springsteen. His 1994 debut,Grace, was a critical success, lauded by the likes ofDavid BowieandLed Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, who declared it one of his favorite albums of the decade, Columbia Records Buckley was in the spotlight and on a relentless touring schedule for the years that followed. And then, expectation began to build for a second album. https://people-app.onelink.me/HNIa/kz7l4cuf "It was just heartbreaking because it was overwhelming for him," Moore says of the demands placed upon him. "He once said to me, 'Rebecca, I can't even shower in the morning.' I think all he could focus on was keeping himself upright and getting to the meetings and seeing through the obligations." Photo by Peter Moore, Courtesy of Rebecca Moore Working 16-hour days playing shows and doing press, "there was burnout," says Bowen. But "the label wanted pounds of flesh and they were like, 'We want to get this record done.' " Buckley's mom, Mary Guibert, recalls Jeff once telling her, "They want to make me a commodity. They want me to make anotherGrace." But, she adds, "He wanted to shock people. He wanted to create something that was edgy. He wanted to be aMorrissey. He didn't want to beMichael Bolton." By 1997, still struggling to produce a second album, Buckley moved to Memphis, Tenn., to write in solitude. "He wanted some stability," Berg says. "And that's what Memphis represented for him at the time. I think he just wanted some peace in his life." Buckley began to get traction on a new album that spring, and that May he invited his band down to record. "He was extremely excited to get this thing done, to be back with the bandmates," Bowen says. "Everything was laid out, I had all the gear down there and we had this cool old warehouse that we were going to use." But on the evening of May 29, on his way to meet his bandmates, he stopped at the bank of a tributary adjacent to the Mississippi and, singing along as Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" played on a nearby stereo, waded into the water. A wake from a passing riverboat pulled him under. His body was found six days later and an autopsy ruled his death an accident. Steve Eichner/Getty The recordings he left behind were released in 1998 as a second album,Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. But his mother says Buckley's legacy was far greater than his music. "In my eulogy, I gave what I called 'The Golden Promise', because the absence of this one individual is such a gaping hole in our collective souls that it would take each and every one of us make a promise to do something to make the world a better place because he's not here," Guibert says. David Tonge/Getty Bowen took that to heart, and with Guibert's support, he co-foundedRoad Recovery Foundation, which pairs music industry mentors with young people struggling with addiction and other issues to help them heal through art and performance. It was a cause, says Bowen, a former addict himself, that Jeff encouraged him to pursue. "He understood what it's like to be lost, to not fit into the equation, to be the outcast," says Bowen, who adds that the program has helped more than 50,000 young people in the 27 years it's been in operation. "And anyway he could elevate someone else, he wanted to help. Especially young people, he loved that." Read the original article onPeople

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies recalled 40-year-old reliever David Robertson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday, three weeks after hesigned a free-agent dealwith the National League East leaders. Robertson made six relief appearances with Lehigh Valley, and had a 10.13 ERA, though he had four scoreless outings. He struck out six, walked one and allowed 11 hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Phillies made the move before their series finale at Texas, where Robertson was 3-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 68 games last season. "To start out with I'd like to just kind of ease him in a little bit, a little lower-leverage, but we might be forced to run him out there in high-leverage, who knows," manager Rob Thomson said. Right-hander Alan Rangel was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the 26-man roster. Over his 16-year major league career, Robertson, has a 2.91 ERA in 861 games, all but one of those in relief. He has been to the playoffs nine times, including being part the New York Yankees' last World Series title in 2009. This is his third stint with the Phillies, first as a free agent before the 2019 season and then after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago Cubs in 2022. He played nine seasons with the Yankees over two different times in New York, which drafted him in the 17th round of the 2006 amateur draft. "He's a calming influence. He's been through it before, World Series, playoff runs," Thomson said. "I think he's a good guy for the younger guys to kind of lean on and learn from." ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Shilo Sanders says dad Deion turned down his NFL debut jersey: 'He didn't want it'New Foto - Shilo Sanders says dad Deion turned down his NFL debut jersey: 'He didn't want it'

Shilo Sanderswill have to work extra hard to get his father a more worthy birthday gift. The younger Sanders has received less publicity than his older brother Shedeur so far this offseason, but is making his way just fine through theNFLthus far. Sanders made his NFL debut on Saturday when theTampa Bay Buccaneers took on the Tennessee Titansin preseason action. The rookie DB notched a tackle in the 29-7Buccaneerswin – something that would surely make his Hall of Fame pops Deion Sanders proud. Proud enough to maybe gift his game-worn jersey, right? Not so fast, says Sanders. "He didn't want it (the game-worn debut jersey),"Sanders said with a laugh. "'Cause, you know he's a Hall of Famer. He expects like 30 times more. He didn't want my jersey. I'm gonna give it to my mom, though." What about as a birthday gift? (The elder Sanders' birthday falls on Aug. 9.) "Nah, he don't want it. I gotta get like three picks or something for him to want that," he added with a smile. Sanders was an undrafted free agent pickup of the Bucs this offseason. There are few better landing spots for the Colorado product than with Tampa Bay and head coach Todd Bowles, who has fostered a reputation for building up solid safety play. Well, as the saying goes: The standard is the standard, and there's no better standard than that of a Hall of Famer – even if you are his son. Box Office: 'Weapons' Impresses With $42.5 Million Debut, 'Freakier Friday' Starts Strong With $29 Million OpeningNew Foto - Box Office: 'Weapons' Impresses With $42.5 Million Debut, 'Freakier Friday' Starts Strong With $29 Million Opening

"Weapons," a twisty horror film about a group of missing children, and "Freakier Friday," a body swap comedy, delivered a potent one-two punch at the box office this weekend, lifting ticket sales as summer movie season draws to a close. The films captured the top two spots on the charts, with "Weapons" debuting to $42.5 million and "Freakier Friday" premiering to $29 million. Last weekend's champ, Disney and Marvel's "Fantastic Four: The First Steps," surrendered its box office crown, earning $15.5 million in its third weekend of release for a third place finish. After starting strong with a $117.6 million bow, "Fantastic Four" has plummeted in subsequent weekends, falling more than 67% in its sophomore frame and another 60% over the past weekend. The superhero film has grossed $230 million domestically and will likely earn less money that "Superman," the latest comic book adaptation from its rival DC Films. More from Variety 'Weapons' Star Alden Ehrenreich on Mustache Acting, Shadowing Cops and the Horror Hit's Message About Gun Violence Zach Cregger Says His 'Resident Evil' Movie Exists 'Outside' of the Original Characters Because Fans 'Already Have That' With the Games: 'I'm Not Going to Tell Leon's Story' Jamie Lee Curtis Calls Out Critic as 'A Tad Harsh' For Negative 'Freakier Friday' Review: 'Some People Love It' "Weapons" extends a hot streak for Warner Bros., which released the film through its New Line label. The studio started 2025 with bombs like "Mickey 17" and "The Alto Knights," but regained its stride with last spring's "Sinners" and "A Minecraft Movie" and this summer's "Superman." Made for $38 million, "Weapons" is writer-director Zach Cregger's follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Barbarian," which was released by 20th Century Studios in 2022 and earned a solid $45.4 million. Cregger's latest film stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan. Its success should catapult him to the top of the filmmaking ranks; Cregger has already been enlisted to reboot "Resident Evil." Disney released "Freakier Friday," a follow-up to the hit 2003 film "Freaky Friday," bringing back original stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter who trade places. With a production budget of $42 million, the family film is off to a strong start. Both "Weapons" and "Freakier Friday" benefitted from strong reviews and word-of-mouth, earning an "A-" and an "A" grade from CinemaScore, respectively. That could set them up nicely for repeat business over the coming weeks. In fourth place, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's "The Bad Guys 2″ picked up $10.4 million in its sophomore outing, a 53% from its opening. That will push the animated sequel's domestic total to $43.4 million. Its predecessor ended its run with $97 million in North America. And "The Naked Gun," the final release of Paramount's old regime after the studio's acquisition by Skydance closed earlier this week, rounded out the top five. The action satire, which stars Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, picked up $8.3 million in its second weekend, bringing its North American haul to $33 million. Among other new wide releases, Angel Studios, which specializes in faith-based programming, premiered the fantasy comedy "Sketch" to $2.5 million. TheNew York Yankeesfocused on adding depth to their lineup and bullpen at the MLB trade deadline, rather than make a splashy deal. But the deeper roster the team tried to build is being eroded by injuries. UtilitymanAmed Rosariowas placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained shoulder (the sternoclavicular, or SC, joint, to be exact), the team announced Sunday. He sustained the injury while running into the right-field wall duringFriday's 5-3 lossto theHouston Astros. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] A nine-year MLB veteran, Rosario was acquired from theWashington Nationalsfor speed and defense, along with a bench bat versus left-handed pitching (.312/.343/.495). He's appeared in four games with the Yankees, batting 4-of-7 with a double and one RBI while playing right field. CatcherJ.C. Escarrawas recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Rosario's spot on the active roster. In an earlier stint with the Yankees, he batted .205/.299/.337 with five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI in 97 plate appearances. Rosario joins another trade-deadline addition, outfielderAustin Slater, on the IL. Slater is expected to be out much longer with a strained left hamstring. Slater, acquired from the Chicago White Sox, will be sidelinedfour to six weeks, according to manager Aaron Boone. Last week, the Yankees also demoted pitcherJake Birdto Triple-A. Bird, one of three relieversthe Yankees acquired at the deadline, gave up a three-run, walk-off homer to Josh Jung inMonday's 8-5 lossto the Texas Rangers. Silver lining. Pooping himself is no longer his most embarrassing moment. — Jim Zilisch (@jzilisch1)August 10, 2025 Zilisch, 19, is one of NASCAR's top prospects and an exceptional road course racer. Saturday's win at the Glen was his sixth Xfinity Series victory of the season, and he's currently atop the points standings. However, he's likely to miss multiple races because of the injury. He drives for JR Motorsports, the team co-owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, in NASCAR's No. 2 series. It's not the first injury Zilisch has suffered this season, either. While racing for the win at Talladega in the spring, Zilisch's car went sliding and hit head-first into the inside wall on the backstretch. He suffered a lower back injury in the wreck and missed a race. Zilisch was also scheduled to start Sunday's Cup Series race for Trackhouse Racing. His No. 87 car has been withdrawn from the race as a result of his fall. Trackhouse is widely expected to promote Zilisch to the Cup Series full-time in 2026 as Daniel Suarez is leaving the team at the end of the season.
