Little League World Series scores: Results, schedule as first day of tournament gets underwayNew Foto - Little League World Series scores: Results, schedule as first day of tournament gets underway

The wait is finally over. The2025 Little League World Serieskicks off on Wednesday, with eight teams beginning their quest to win it all. The action starts at 1 p.m. ET, when Puerto Rico takes on Latin America to start the tournament. Mountain vs. Great Lakes, Panama vs. Australia and Metro vs. Southwest will also square off on the event's first day. A new winner will be crowned in 2025 after last year's champion, Lake Mary, was eliminated ahead of this year's tournament. Which teams will prevail and remain in the winner's bracket? Tune in Wednesday for the start of all the action. •Venezuela 5, Puerto Rico 0 • Mountain vs. Great Lakes at 3 p.m. ET (Result: TBD) • Panama vs. Australia at 5 p.m. ET (Result: TBD) • Metro vs. Southwest at 7 p.m. ET (Result: TBD) In case you needed a refresher, the 2025 Little League World Series will feature a total of 20 teams — 10 from the United States and 10 International clubs. Those teams will compete in a modified double-elimination tournament. Play begins Aug. 13, with the winners advancing and remaining in the winners portion of the bracket. Starting Aug. 16, the teams that lost their first games will face off to determine which teams remain in the event. Once a team loses twice, it is eliminated. But that changes once the championships begin. The U.S. championship game and international championship game will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, and will both be single-elimination games. That creates a scenario where a team could be eliminated from the event with just one loss. The same thing will hold true for the LLBWS championship game. It's a single-elimination contest. Games will last six innings. If a game is tied after six innings, both teams will play the seventh inning as normal, with no runners on base. But if the game extends past the seventh inning, a runner will open each inning on second base. Here's how the action shapes up for Thursday. • Europe-Africa vs. Japan at 1 p.m. ET • New England vs. Southwest at 3 p.m. ET • Asia-Pacific vs. Mexico at 5 p.m. ET • Midwest vs. Mid Atlantic at 7 p.m. ET

Scottie Scheffler to use a different caddie at BMW Championship as regular deals with family matterNew Foto - Scottie Scheffler to use a different caddie at BMW Championship as regular deals with family matter

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler is going with a PGA Tour caddie for the BMW Championship as his regular looper, Ted Scott, deals with a family emergency at home in Louisiana. Scott had to leave immediately after the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and Scheffler used longtime friend Brad Payne from the College Golf Fellowship. This week he has turned to Michael Cromie. He usually works for Chris Kirk, who missed qualifying for theBMW Championshipby one shot. "He works really hard and does a good job. We're both learning a new golf course this week, so it's been fun," Scheffler said. The family matter involving Scott was kept private, though Scheffler said he has spoken to him a couple of times and the family was in good spirits. "I think Ted's where he needs to be right now, and I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be," Scheffler said. Scheffler finished one shot out of a playoff last week at theTPC Southwind. He remains the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup at the BMW Championship and already is assured of a $5 million bonus for staying at the top going into the FedEx Cup finale next week at East Lake. Scheffler said Cromie was learning a lot of the minutiae that often goes unnoticed by spectators, such as when he likes to snack and how often to drink, and how he likes to get the yardage and other conditions communicated to him. There's also the matter of getting yardages from tee-to-green. "Brad did a great job stepping in, but Brad is a friend, he's not a professional caddie," Scheffler said. "I think when you have a professional on the bag, it's a bit different. It's not that I don't trust Brad to do the numbers. It was just something that I think both of us probably thought it was a good idea to be double-checking each other. "Going into this week, it will be kind of more of a normal routine for me in terms of preparation over the shot and stuff like that," he said. "It's nice for me to be able to walk up to the ball, see the shot that I can imagine hitting, and then when the numbers come, we start trying to really dial it in." ___ AP golf:https://apnews.com/hub/golf

Chuck Girard, who became one of the pioneers of Christian rock as Love Song's lead singer in the 1970s after having hits as a member of the Hondells in the '60s, died Monday at age 81. Girard had announced on social media earlier that he was battling stage 4 cancer. "It is with great sorrow, yet also great joy, to let you know that Chuck has moved to Heaven and will be eternally with Jesus," his wife, Karen, announced on social media. "He left this earth at rest and in total peace, surrounded by family. We praise the Lord for His great mercy and for His gift of Chuck's music, message, and heart." Love Song was short-lived, releasing a self-titled debut album in 1972 and then breaking up before a second LP, "Final Touch," hit stores two years later. (A reunion tour generated a live double-album, "Feel the Love," in 1977.) Yet their impact was widely felt in evangelical circles and beyond, as the Girard-fronted group became the first Christian rock band to receive national notoriety, at the same time as solo artists like Larry Norman were coming to greater attention as what was then called "Jesus music" emerged. That impact eclipsed the more chart-worthy success he had had a decade earlier, when he was a member of such groups as the Hondells and the Castells. The latter group cracked the top 20 with "Sacred" in 1961, and then the Hondells reached No. 9 with a Gary Usher-produced cover of the Beach Boys' "Little Honda" in 1964. The 1972 "Love Song" album was named by CCM Magazine as one of the 25 greatest Christian contemporary music albums of all time. A three-part documentary about the group, "A Band Called Love Song: The Music & Movement of the Jesus Revolution," is set to come out on Prime Video on Sept. 19. Following Love Song's initial breakup in the early 1970s, Girard embarked on a solo career, starting with a self-titled album in 1974 on which he was backed by members of Ambrosia. That solo debut included his most popular song, "Sometimes Alleluia," which became a staple of nondenominational church services that were seeking out fresher songs for worship in place of hymns. Although his profile was lower as succeeding generations of artists came along in what came to be known as CCM, Girard continued to enjoy respect as one of the pioneers of the genre, and — with several long pauses in his recording career — continued releasing albums up through 2024's "Moonrise Serenade." Christian music stars of the past and present reacted to Girard's death with expressions of sorrow and gratitude. "I am so grateful for the life Chuck lived and for the way he ran with endurance the race set before him," said Amy Grant, in a statement to CCM Magazine. "The hope-filled music he poured into the world, using his God-given gifts, has touched countless lives. I remember listening to 'Slow Down' as a young teenager and how that song helped direct the course of my life. Now he is seeing what we have yet to see and hearing what we have only dreamed about, joining that great cloud of witnesses. We will all be there in a blink of an eye." "There's no doubt that Chuck was not only a pioneer, he was a pastor," said John J. Thompson, founder of True Tunes and longtime CCM chronicler. "Love Song may not have been the first Jesus Music band, but they certainly took the genre to a whole new level of professionalism without losing an ounce of passion or heart. Most people think of him and his legacy through the lens of Love Song, but his solo work was so seminal too. 'Rock and Roll Preacher' and 'Slow Down' were equally influential — and critical— for completely different reasons." Girard released a memoir, "Rock and Roll Preacher," in 2020, named for a song on his first solo album. Initially raised in the Los Angeles area, Girard's family had moved to Santa Rosa when he began forming bands with fellow students in the area. He was still a senior in high school when the Castells' "Sacred" hit the top 20 in 1961. It was then that he met Gary Usher, the co-writer of Beach Boys songs like "In My Room," who invited Girard to become a part of his studio inner circle, recording with bands with ever-shifting monikers and lineups. "So I did that for about four years," Girard said. "I made records under all kinds of different names. We made hot rod albums, surf albums, monster albums." Nick Venel, an exec who had worked with the Beach Boys, asked Usher to come up with an album that would come out under the name of the Hondells. Usher was said to have handed Girard a copy of the brand new Beach Boys album "All Summer Long" and asked him to quickly learn the Brian Wilson/Mike Love-penned track "Little Honda," the Hondells' cover of which just as quickly took off. In the early '70s Girard was playing gigs in clubs with Tommy Coomes, Jay Truax and Fred Field. After experimentations with LSD and at least one drug bust in Las Vegas, the musicians were reading different spiritual texts when they were invited to what Girard called a Christian commune in Laguna Beach. An invitation to Calvary Chapel, before it became a megachurch, led to all four musicians becoming Christian coverts. Love Song became a house band of sorts at the Chuck Smith-led, counterculture-friendly church. Girard produced the first of a long series of compilation albums on Calvary Church's Maranatha label, "The Everlastin' Living Jesus Music Concert," although he said he was not credited as such on the album, "because I was told that would be giving the glory to man, not God," he said. (Producer credits were added on subsequent Maranatha releases.) There was little that counted as a Christian music industry in Love Song's day, with Word Records, which released Love Song's albums with the Good News imprint, being the only major label in the genre for a few years to come. "The things that are concerns today weren't even on our minds, he said in an interview. "Like nowadays everybody's looking at demographics and who your core audience is and radio-friendly records and all that. Our music was just music that came from our heart, our experiences with the Lord. We had some industry input. When we finally did get signed to a label and records started to come out there was input. But we really were blessed to be able to make the records that we wanted to without any considerations for industry kind of things." Love Song was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame at a 2012 ceremony, which included the later-joining members Bob Wall and Phil Keaggy (who toured with but did not record with the group). "I would like to thank the GMHOF sincerely for the honor; it is truly validating and appreciated," he wrote in a blog post at the time. But "what really matters is the heavenly Hall of Fame," he continued. "Whether or not such a thing would actually be a way that God would honor the greatest of His servants, if it did exist, we would probably be very surprised to see who might be on it and how they would be ranked. "#25, Billy Graham, #15, the apostle Paul, #3 Mildred Jones" Wait a minute, Mildred Jones? Who is she? God might say, 'Mildred, because you prayed without ceasing, fasted once a month, and continued to lift up Billy Graham in intercession, you are #3.' Silly? Probably. But you get my point. The real treasure is in Heaven. The real rewards will not be determined by outward achievement alone but by inner qualities, integrity, truthfulness, obedience. At the end of the day, what do we have that God did not give us?" He continued, "I pray that we will all be in Heaven's Hall of Fame someday and hear the most amazing words we will probably ever hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your lord." In June, Girard relayed to his followers that his cancer had metastasized to his lungs about a year ago, and that he had stopped chemo treatments. "Ultimately, it is in the hands of God," he said. "Karen and I, and the whole family, are walking in total peace with the comfort of the Holy Spirit, knowing that our lives are in His hands… I am deeply grateful for all of you. It's been an honor to share my music and ministry with you for the past 50 years. Your kind messages and support over the years have been a tremendous encouragement and inspiration." Girard is survived by his wife, Karen, four daughters, four granddaughters and two grandsons. Two of his daughters, Alisa Girard-Childers (formerly of the group ZOEgirl) and Kristin Girard-Thurston, formed the group Girard Girls in the late 2000s with two of his granddaughters, Lauren and Kailyn Thurston. Twins owners decide to keep team after exploring sale: 'The franchise has become part of our family story'New Foto - Twins owners decide to keep team after exploring sale: 'The franchise has become part of our family story'

The Pohlad family will not sell the Minnesota Twins after entertaining offers for the franchise. The Pohlads put out a statement Wednesday, confirming they will keep the club, which has "become part of our family story." In the statement, the Pohlads said theyexplored a number of sale optionsover the past several months. Ultimately, the family opted to add "two significant limited partnership groups" to the equation. The Pohlad family will remain the "principal owner" of the club despite those additions. The statement ends: "We see and hear the passion from our partners, the community and Twins fans. That passion inspires us. This ownership group is committed to building a winning team and culture for this region, one that Twins fans are proud to cheer for." The news comes just weeks after the Twins engaged in a fire sale which saw multiple relievers and shortstop Carlos Correa shipped out at the trade deadline. The Correa move, in particular, came off as a salary dump, as the team accepted a weaker return in exchange for the Houston Astros taking on more of Correa's remaining contract. Those moves caused some to wonder whether the Pohlad family was attempting to shed salary to clear future payroll in anticipation of a sale. Wednesday's statement ends any speculation along that line of thinking. The Twins have experienced a fair amount of success since they were purchased by Carl Pohlad for $44 million in 1984. The club won two World Series championships early during Pohlad's ownership and experienced a strong run between 2001 and 2010, in which they finished first or second in the American League Central eight times. Despite making the playoffs six times during that stretch, the team failed to advance past the ALCS. More recently, the Twins made the playoffs four times since 2017, but haven't advanced past the ALDS. Despite the team's success, the Twins have rarely run high payrolls. The last time the team opened a season in thetop-10 in payrolloccurred back in 2011, per Cot's Contracts. Since 2013, the team has never ranked higher than 16th in payroll. That hasn't necessarily been an issue during the regular season, where the Twins have experienced success in a fairly weak AL Central. But come the playoffs, where they often face higher-payroll clubs, the Twins have withered. The team famously broke an18-game playoff losing streakwith a win over the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023. During that stretch, the Twins have gone 0-13 against the New York Yankees in the postseason. While Minnesota managed to end its playoff losing streak against the Blue Jays in 2023, it still lost the series 3-1. It's unclear whether the team's two new partnerships will enable the club to spend more money in the future. Higher payrolls don't always guarantee success in baseball, but the Twins likely would have performed better in recent postseasons had they signed better, more expensive players in free agency. While the Twins have struggled since the start of 2024, those issues haven't affected the team's value. When the Pohlads initially announced theirintention to sell the teamlast October, the Twins were valued atroughly $1.5 billion.

TheMiami Dolphinshave been waiting to get their pass rush to full health for some time. The team received yet another scare on that front on Wednesday. Edge rusher Chop Robinson was carted off with theDetroit Lionswith an undisclosed injury. Robinson said on his Instagram story afterward, "I'm good yall (sic) nothing serious." According tothe Palm Beach Post, which is part of the USA TODAY Network, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and fellow edge rusher Jaelan Phillips attended to Robinson before the cart arrived. Robinson was hurt on a play in which he forced a fumble by Lions running back David Montgomery. Last season saw Bradley Chubb miss the entire campaign due while recovering from a knee injury suffered in December 2023, while Phillips was sidelined after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Week 4. The latter also suffered a torn Achilles in November 2023. Robinson started just one game as a rookie after being selected with the No. 21 overall pick in last year's NFL draft, but he came on strong to close out his debut season. The Penn State product recorded six sacks in the Dolphins' final 10 games and finished fifth in voting for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Chubb, among others, envisioned big things for Year 2. "He's lights-out, man," Chubb said in July, according tothe Post. "His motor, the way he bends the edge, the way he could play the run – I know a lot of people in here say he couldn't play the run, (but he's) nothing short of phenomenal, man, and I'm excited to see him keep growing."
