Why Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson has All-Star pitchers fuming: 'It's not fair'New Foto - Why Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson has All-Star pitchers fuming: 'It's not fair'

ATLANTA — He's a 23-year-old kid. He still plays baseball video games before he goes to work, and Fortnite when he comes home. He loves pizza, burgers and a good milkshake. His name isJacob Wilson, rookie shortstop for the Athletics of Sacramento. He also just happens to be the best pure old-school hitter in baseball. Wilson, who was playing at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix two years ago, will have his coming-out party at the All-Star Game. CAL RALEIGH:Big Dumper's Home Run Derby win a family affair He's the first rookie shortstop to be voted by the fans to start an All-Star game, the youngest A's player to start an All-Star Game since Vida Blue in 1971, and joins his father, Jack, as the only father-son combination to be All Star shortstops. "What he's doing is unbelievable," saidKansas City RoyalsAll-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. "It's great seeing a young guy hitting for that high of average. I look forward to talking to him about what he's doing as a hitter." In this world of launch angle and exit velocity, filled with walks, strikeouts and homers, Wilson is the anomaly. Wilson is hitting .332 with just 26 extra-base hits and nine home runs. And are you ready for this? He has struck out just 28 times and walked 20 times in 340 at-bats. It's as if Tony Gwynn and Rod Carew, who combined to win 15 batting titles in their Hall of Fame careers, walked through the door. Gwynn, a career .338 hitter, never struck out more than 40 times in a season during his career, and never walked more than 59 times. Carew, a career .327 hitter, struck out 62 or fewer times in his last 14 seasons, and never walked 80 times in a year. So here comes Wilson, the young kid, with an old soul, reminding everyone what baseball used to look like when there were pure hitters in the game. "I cannot talk hitting with Jacob," A's All-Star DH Brent Rooker said, "because I don't understand what he's doing up there. And what he does well, it's not what I do well. So I can't relate to what he's doing at all. "He just goes up there, he sees the ball, he hits the ball on the barrel, and he gets hits. I absolutely cannot do that." So, just how do you get him out, anyway? "Believe me, we've tried everything," Seattle Mariners All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh said. "He just has really good zone control. He's not trying to do too much damage, but he can do damage. He's just a scrappy guy that is just trying to do whatever he can to get on base. "It's impressive what he's able to do, especially at that young age." Yankees All-Star pitcher Carlos Rodon saw him in the American League clubhouse Monday, stopped him, and moaned about the difficulty of pitching to him. "I said, 'Dude, I'm looking at scouting reports on you and it says to throw fastballs up and in because you're not supposed to have any hard contact.' I throw a four-seamer up and in, and you hit a double off me. Come on. "You don't know what to expect with a guy that has low-miss, and can put up quality contact out there," Rodon said. "It's not fair. What do I do with a guy like this? You're not going to strike him out. So, you're trying to get a pitch that limits launch or limits exit velocity, and hopefully he gets out. That's what makes it tough, especially when you have a guy on base, because he's more than likely to drive that run in because of the ability to put the bat on the ball. "It's very different what guys do now." Well, refreshing, even. "It's a blast to watch, it's awesome to watch," Rooker said. "Just the ability to swing at every pitch, hit every pitch, and get a hit on every pitch, is something that's unique in our game. And it makes him incredibly valuable. "That's why you saw him elected as a starter. It speaks to the amount of success he's had, the impact he's had in a short time, and the statement he's making." Wilson's batting average and hit total is second only to New York Yankees MVP Aaron Judge, and Wilson could become the first Athletic player to hit higher than .321 since former A's MVP Jason Giambi in 2001. It's enough to make the great hitters of the past taking notice, delighted that the art of pure hitting is making a return. "I've definitely got gotten a lot of comments from guys," Wilson said, "on just wanting to go up there and swing. I want to go up there and be aggressive. That's what I love doing. I want to hit. "I want to swing. I never want to walk. I just want to hit and get on base." Yep, the same mindset that Carew and Gwynn took throughout their careers, leading them right through the doors of Cooperstown. It's similar, as well, to San Diego Padres three-time batting champion Luis Arráez. He's a career .317 hitter who has never struck out more than 48 times or walked 50 times in a season during his seven-year career. "That guy hits everything," Wilson says of Arráez. "You throw the ball anywhere, and he'll swing and hit. It's pretty awesome just to watch, and from a hitter standpoint, you appreciate that. I love watching hitters go up there and just battle, whether its foul off a tough pitch, or just take their base hit the other way. He's a great example of pure hitting, and he does that every day." Certainly, he's a throwback with hitters today almost as thrilled drawing a walk than getting a hit. It will drive managers nuts watching their power hitter draw a walk with runners in scoring position instead of trying to drive in runs. "What good is a walk from my power hitter if he can't run?" one NL manager told USA TODAY Sports. "All he does is clog the basepaths. I don't understand it." Neither does Wilson. "There's a lot of guys that do that," Wilson said, "that's part of their game. For me, that's not the strength that I have. I get up there and get thrown a lot of strikes because I hit. So, when they throw strikes, I go up there and just try to hit them. Some guys just enjoy wanting to walk. Not me. I want to hit. "To me, batting average should be a stat that matters to every hitter.'' Who knows, maybe even one day, being a .300 hitter will be considered cool again. "I can only hope," Wilson said. LSU visits Clemson in college football season opener and will have no excuses this timeNew Foto - LSU visits Clemson in college football season opener and will have no excuses this time

ATLANTA - He has never done this before, never put so much emphasis on what amounts to less than 10 percent of a football season. One game. One lousy game is now everything atLSU. "Because now it's a goal," LSU coach Brian Kelly says. "A tangible, specific and difficult goal." And a flashpoint to what has become acritical seasonfor Kelly. When LSU travels toClemsonto begin the season, it's more than a mega matchup between two blue bloods with national title hopes. More than a crossroads for Kelly's buildout at LSU. It's a microcosm of the now great unknown of college football. The Brian Kelly of old would never put so much emphasis on one game, much less sell out for the first game of the season. But the here and now and transitory nature of college football is different, and it demands drastic measures after consecutive losses in season openers toFlorida State(twice) and Southern California. So Kelly had Clemson signage placed all over the football facility at LSU. Logos and paw prints all over the weight room and heavy bags, strategically placed to leave no doubt. He has preached all offseason that this is the most talented team he has had since arriving at LSU in 2022, seemingly willing his team to embrace the expectations. The message didn't change during the first day of SEC Media Days. He says this should be the best offense he has had at LSU (hello, Jayden Daniels), and now believes highly paid defensive coordinator Blake Baker has the personnel to build the unit into the nation's elite. BEST TO WORST:Ranking all 16 SEC college football stadiums MR. FIX IT:The billionaire Texas Tech booster with plan to save college sports There are no more excuses. In other words, the Clemson game is big. Really big — and Kelly doesn't care who knows it, or how LSU has prepared for it. It can be – and more than likely will be – a season-defining moment before the calendar flips to September. "We can't play like we have in the (previous) season openers," said LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. "Everyone knows it, and we've embraced it. There's a sense of urgency on this team." Something had to change, had to shake a program that over-delivered in Year 1 under Kelly (beat Alabama, won the SEC West Division), but has struggled to take the next step since. Part of the problem is a lack of elite players, part is the unique circumstances of the ever-changing environment in college football. And all of it is sandwiched around the dichotomy of building now vs. building for the future — in the middle of the storm of expectations. The three coaches at LSU prior to Kelly – Nick Saban, Les Miles, Ed Orgeron – all won the national title by their third season. Kelly's third season with nine wins was his worst in Baton Rouge. So why change everything you've known as real and tangible in more than three decades of coaching, and bank an entire offseason on one game? "Because this team is mature enough to handle it," Kelly said. Which is in direct contrast to Kelly's previous three seasons in Baton Rouge. When Kelly arrived at LSU, the plan was to build through high school recruiting, and supplement with the transfer portal. That ended quickly when he got a look at the roster, and realized the heavy lift ahead. It was more than talent, it was philosophy and preparation and intent — and all of it was woefully inconsistent. LSU had the best player in college football in 2023 (Jayden Daniels), and an historically poor defense. LSU had one of the top five quarterbacks in college football in 2024 (Nussmeier), and a team that failed to consistently zero in on big games. So Kelly loaded up on impact transfers from the portal, completely revamping the secondary on defense and adding elite pass rushers from FSU (Patrick Payton) and Florida (Jack Pyburn). More important, Kelly added impact players with intangibles off the field to help galvanize the locker room. "The guys we added could've stayed where they were and still been drafted by the NFL," Kelly said. "These guys came here to win a championship." That, everyone, is the statement of the season. Not a non-conference game that LSU could lose and still advance to the College Football Playoff. This is about championship or bust, and the Clemson game is the first step. "Every week is about going 1-0," said LSU wideout Chris Hilton Jr. "Stack those 1-0's together and see where it ends. The first one is Clemson." The flashpoint to a critical season. Each of the seven books in the series, "Sorcerer's Stone," "Chamber of Secrets," "Prisoner of Azkaban," "Goblet of Fire," "Order of the Phoenix," "Half-Blood Prince" and "Deathly Hallows," will each be adapted into one season of TV. In May, the trio of lead roles had finally been unveiled: Dominic McLaughlin will play the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. The three are largely newcomers with few prior acting credits. McLaughlin acted in "Grow," a comedy on Sky with Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, Stanton starred as Matilda in the musical of the same name in the West End, and Stout had no prior acting credits. HBO auditioned more than 32,000 children for the lead role of Harry Potter, famously originated by Daniel Radcliffe. Executive producer Mark Mylod said that the casting team had been reviewing between 500 and 1,000 audition tapes per day. "After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there," said showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod in a statement revealing the three actors. Other series regulars include "Conclave" star John Lithgow as Album Dumbledore, "I May Destroy You" breakout star Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, "Tumbleweeds" Oscar nominee Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall and "Shaun of the Dead" comedian Nick Frost as Hagrid. Meanwhile, Paul Whitehouse (Tom Stoppard's "Leopoldstadt," Rupert Goold's "Patriots") and Luke Thallon ("The Fast Show," "Harry & Paul") take on recurring roles as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch and Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Quirinus Quirrell, respectively. In June,Varietyreported exclusively that Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby would play Petunia and Vernon Dursley, respectively. Other castings revealed at the time include Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy and several other Hogwarts students. The "Harry Potter" series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. See who all of the confirmed "Harry Potter" cast members are below. Original Actor: Daniel Radcliffe Young actor Dominic McLaughlin will star as Harry Potter, aka the Boy Who Lived, the role that launched Daniel Radcliffe to global fame. McLaughlin previously acted in "Grow," an upcoming comedy on Sky starring Nick Frost — who, coincidentally, will play Hagrid in "Harry Potter" and Golda Rosheuvel. Original Actor: Rupert Grint Alastair Stout will play the red-headed wizard Ron Weasley and Harry's best friend at Hogwarts. "Harry Potter" will be a huge breakout for Stout, who doesn't have any prior acting credits. With his red hair, Stout looks nearly identical to a young Rupert Grint, who starred as Ron in the original movies. Original Actor: Emma Watson Arabella Stanton is the new Hermione Granger, one of the smartest students at Hogwarts and close friend of Harry and Ron. She previously starred as Matilda in "Matilda: The Musical" on the West End, which was also her debut. Original Actor:Richard Harris and Michael Gambon The Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Dumbledore is a powerful wizard, the most senior professor at Hogwarts and an early mentor figure for Harry. Prior to the events of "Sorcerer's Stone," Dumbledore (with the help of Minerva McGonagall) takes baby Harry to live with the Dursleys at Privet Drive. Original Actor:Alan Rickman The potions professor at Hogwarts, Severus Snape is the head of the Slytherin House and an early adversary of Harry and his friends. Original Actor:Robbie Coltrane The half-giant Hagrid is a Hogwarts gamekeeper. He is the first to inform young Harry that he's a wizard and remains a close friend to the boy, as well as to Ron and Hermione, throughout the trio's time at school. Original Actor:David Bradley Argus Filch is a caretaker at Hogwarts who couldn't care less about the students. A strict disciplinarian, Filch works with his cat, Mrs. Norris, to sniff out misbehaving kids. He is known as a "squib," which is someone who has no magic powers despite being descended from wizard genes. Original Actor:Ian Hart Quirinus Quirrell is an anxious Defense Against the Dark Arts professor when Harry begins attending Hogwarts. The professor previously taught Muggle Studies and also went on a search for Voldemort to learn more about the evil wizard. By the time Harry gets to know him, Quirrell turns out to be far more complicated than he seems on the surface. Original Actor: Tom Felton Harry's arch nemesis, Draco Malfoy is a student who belongs to the Slytherin house. He believes that all those who are born muggles should be denied being given an education at Hogwarts, and often bullies Harry, Ron and Hermione throughout their years at the school. Draco chooses to follow what the rest of his family believes, and nothing will stand in his way to terrorize Harry and his friends. Pratt will star in BBC's new adaptation of "Lord Of The Flies," where he will be playing the role of Jack, a young leader who is more interested in hunting and fighting. Original Actor: Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths Bel Powley will be playing the sister of Harry's mother, Petunia Dursley. After taking in Harry after the death of his parents, Petunia is harsh to Harry growing up, keeping him as far away as possible from her son, Dudley. Powley has recently starred in other TV series, including "Masters of the Air," "A Small Light" and "The Morning Show." She was also featured in films such as "The Diary of a Teenage Girl," "White Boy Rick" and "The King of Staten Island." Daniel Rigby plays Harry's uncle Vernon. Rigby's most recent projects include "I, Jack Wright," "Renegade Nell" and "Tom Jones." He is also slated to feature in Amazon's upcoming sci-fi series "Blade Runner 2099." Original Actor: Julie Walters The mother of Ron, Fred, George and Ginny, Molly Weasley is the English pure-blood witch who married Arthur Weasley. Patil is close friends with Lavender Brown throughout the series, and ultimately becomes a member of Dumbledore's Army, fighting side-by-side with Harry, Ron and Hermione. Original Actor:Devon Murray Another member of Gryffindor, Seamus Finnigan is one of Harry's fellow classmates at Hogwarts. It's revealed that he is also a half-blood wizard like Harry, and that his mother waited until after she was married to tell her husband. Later in the "Harry Potter" series, Finnigan joins Dumbledore's Army alongside the main trio. Original Actor:Robert Hardy The 32nd Minister of Magic for the British Ministry of Magic, Cornelius Fudge has a massive influence in the magic world. He believes in pure-blood supremacy, and chooses to avoid listening to Harry and Dumbledore when they reveal that Voldemort is still alive.
