The New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox rivalry had an unexpected visitor Friday, as a rogue squirrel made its way onto the field at Yankee Stadium. The critter appeared in the top of the fourth inning, emerging near third base and quickly sprinting across the field. The squirrel then made its way to the pitcher's mound, where it investigated the hole in the dirt made by the foot of Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried. Does this count as a mound visit? 🤔https://t.co/nqQNrsRscCpic.twitter.com/Wn73qqNUo5 — MLB (@MLB)August 23, 2025 The squirrel's presence briefly stopped play, much to the crowd's delight and the slight annoyance of Fried, who shooed the animal toward the other end of the field. After a quick pause, the squirrel kept moving toward first base before getting spooked and going around the back of the base. It finally exited the field and into the wall after traveling down the right-field line for a while. Yankees first baseman Ben Rice wasn't a fan of the experience. Squirrel reax from Ben Rice: "I didn't want to touch that thing. The guys are giving me crap for it. 'Why are you scared of a squirrel?' I don't know where that thing's been. It made a little noise at me." — Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch)August 23, 2025 At the time that the squirrel stopped play, the Yankees and Red Sox were scoreless. Unfortunately, the squirrel itself couldn't change the score. The Red Sox went on to score a run in a seventh-inning rally for a 1-0 win, with Brayan Bello, Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman combining for a shutout. Boston claimed the squirrel on social media after the game. W.pic.twitter.com/rd7u6u3zjv — Red Sox (@RedSox)August 23, 2025 Squirrels themselves are not an uncommon appearance in MLB. In May, a scene-stealing squirrel interrupted a game at the Detroit Tigers'Comerica Park. There's also the infamous "Rally Squirrel" to which the St. Louis Cardinals partially credited their 2011 World Series Championship — enough, at least, that they got the creatureput on the team's championship rings.
