The Philadelphia Phillies placed three-time All-Star pitcher Zack Wheeler on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a blood clot located near his right shoulder. The news came from Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski less than 24 hours after Wheeler allowed two runs on four hits over five innings in Friday's 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals. "There's not a whole lot we can say on it at this time," Dombrowski said after Saturday's game. "But I commend (the medical staff) for finding this because it could've been a much more trying situation than what it is." The Athletic reported later Saturday that Wheeler, 35, will undergo additional medical tests to find out more about the ailment and whether he could return this season. Wheeler has been an All-Star in back-to-back campaigns. In six seasons with the Phillies, the right-hander has posted a 69-37 record with a 2.91 ERA and 1,094 strikeouts to 220 walks in 979 innings. This season, he has made 24 starts and is 10-5 with a 2.71 ERA and major-league leading 195 strikeouts. Before arriving in Philadelphia, Wheeler spent five seasons with the New York Mets. Veteran Aaron Nola was activated from the 60-day IL on Sunday morning. He will take over the vacant spot in the five-man rotation. Nola, a former All-Star, posted a 3.57 ERA in 33 starts last season, but he got off to a rough start in 2025 with a 6.16 ERA across nine starts. He has battled ankle and rib injuries. --Field Level Media
